One correction: I misspoke on the oil consumption thread poll. It’s the opposite of what I stated: 45% have reported that they DO NOT have the issue while 21% of people say that they do. My bad on the mixup! Thanks for watching Update: when the 2021 ecu does become tunable I will make an update video as well so you all know. If you can swap the 2021 head to the 2020 block, why not swapping the 2020 pistons to the 2021 block?? What if the 2020 ECU could also be swapped to the 2021??
Well, I think for starters all of these parts you are talking about are going to cost a lot right now because these cars are very new. But furthermore, the amount of work any of that would take I don’t think is really worth it. When you can just buy the one that has zero issues from the Jump and is tunable. Not to mention, the 2021s wound have voided warranties left and right if you began pulling engines apart. I don’t think the head swap is worth it in general but who knows
@@ThicWhips For sure bro. But since you mentioned the head swapping, I went I little bit farther with the part swapping 😂 In all honestly, getting new pistons and rings will probably be cheaper than getting a whole engine head, imo. And, do you think Toyota will release a Supra with the S58 engine??
I have a 2017 m240i 6 port exhaust manifold 1st gen b58 with 32k miles mhd stage 2. I put in 7 liter of 0w30 oil in, drove and race for 1 whole year 4k miles later, change the oil and still 7 liter of relatively clean oil came out. Not even 1 pint of oil was consumed, amazing!!! I think just the new 2021 supra having that issue, probably due to their new piston rings design or just a bad batch of rings and pistons.
As 2020 owners, we are a little biased. but when I was choosing between leftover 2020's vs new 2021, it was a no brainer for me based on all the reasons you mentioned. I actually don't even care to tune, i like the car as is stock. but that could be a selling point for resale. there's no guarantee that 2021s will ever be unlockable. And like you said, a modified 2021 isn't going to be WAY faster anyway. Better to just go with a sure thing. To boot, I got my 2020 with zero miles for 52k after TTL, when Toyota was still giving cash rebate
Thanks for engine screen shot. We cannot get the 2021 GR Supra in the U.K sadly at the moment, so will get a 2020 also those oil burning issues on 2021 concern me, but seems erratic between one 2021 car and another it does mention oil burning in the Owners manual though someone has shown. BMW usually oil burn generally though right as you said.
for your info on the poll, you mixed it up. The amount of people that reported that they dont have an oil consumption issue is DOUBLE (not half as stated) as people who did report to have issues. 51 had no issues, 24 did. This means the majority of people dont have the issue.
The 2021 supra has same B58 variant as the M340 and U.S spec Z4. I'm driving a 2021 M340 and it too needed 1 quart of oil added at 6500 miles. BMW's attitude is that it's normal. The oil was changed at around 9700 miles and now car has close to 15k miles..so far so good, still full.
@@ThicWhips Thanks buddy. Btw I love the content, but do you know if there is a someone like you but that works on the 2017 Lexus IS350 platform on RU-vid?
Theres a big differences on hp for 2020 and 2021 theres no such exu that cant be cracked you just need to wait plus those bought 2020 and just did 91 tune is still slower than 2021 stock
Jon your content and delivery has gotten so good man. Harder to appreciate when you see it happen slowly over time but it's crazy when compared to your videos from two plus years ago
Thanks for this! I actually bought the '21 3.0 Premium, but without the intention of tuning. I've already got my scars of perpetually broken racecars. :P But I think you keep a really balanced opinion and deliver a lot of good info in here!
I have the 2021 A91 Refraction Blue Edition. 23,000 miles on it. No oil consumption issues. Eventuri intake and Engine cover, FTP Charge Pipe, CG Downpipe and plenty of carbon fiber inside and out. Only thing left until tune is the catback. That will be soon. Spoke with someone inside Titan Motorsports and it would appear that they are getting very very close to cracking the 2021 ECU and told me to expect a big announcement soon. My ECU build date is 6/1/2020. I provided my CAL ID and from what I have been told by Speed Industry it can not be unlocked yet. Thanks for the ECU cf cover info.....been looking for that. One issue that I have identified is the abnormal inside wear of my front tires.....I know ....I know...and yes I have already taken it in to the best wheel and tire place in Columbus, Ohio. Great people do a great job and really know their stuff. After evaluation the wheels tires and alignment. They found no issues except marked inside wear of those front. They said no way to make any adjustments at this time until Toyota comes up with a solution. Took this to Toyota and of course they just threw up their hands......no surprise there. Really love this car but don't really want to replace tires so frequently because of this. So here's my take on this.....Yes the 2021 will get unlocked and be turnable...probably sooner than many think and yes the tuned 2021 will ultimately make more power than the 2020.....I am guessing at least 50 more whp......so can you wait? Well I can. I am a physician who watched all of his friends buy homes, cars, travel etc. while I was starving and up to $100,000 in debt....back then we called it deferred gratification.....it worked fine for me then considering where I am at these days and will work just as well with the 2021 Supra. I really do appreciate your balanced approach to things and look forward to sharing with you. Anyone else with the tire wear issues?
@@topzki47 It is exceptionally reliable. I have no oil consumption issues at all and I have 37,000 miles on it at this time. Soon will get garaged for weekend only driving. I did break it in properly and I strongly suspect the oil consumption issues are related to those who just can't wait...and don't correctly break it in....take the plunge you will not regret it. Good luck
How did you go about your break in period? Did you follow manufacture recommended? I’ve read that you don’t want to baby it but you you also don’t want to beat on it. ex. WOT from 2k-4.5k. Keeping it in that recommend rev range but also making sure you’re getting into boost.
mind if I ask how old you are? Been thinking about the Supra or M2 (I like both cars...have yet to test drive either one...no surpas or M2s in my area). I am 45 and am digging the size of the Supra, but worry I may look too old for the car if that makes sense? Do you think it is a younger person's car? Similar to the CLA45 AMG (younger buyer) as opposed to the C63 AMG (older buyer)?
I think Bmw has a bad rep more so than anything. I just hit 130k in my N55 powered 335i and have had 0 issues. If you take care of it, it will last. If you neglect it, then like anything it will break. Run a Honda without changing your oil and see what happens....
To be honest man, I think BMW can just be hit or miss sometimes. They get a bad rap, but there are also plenty of them that have lasted long. For every horror story you hear with BMW, there are also BMWs that manage to live long lives. My mother has a 2015 X4 28i with plenty of miles on it and the car has been just fine without any issues. Yeah BMWs can have their issues, but sometimes you get lucky and find one that is hassle free.
I remember when the R35 GT-Rs ecu was “uncrackable” when they first came out, and they cracked it pretty quickly. The 21 Supra’s ecu will be cracked in time. Personally I don’t think that should be a deterrent for somebody. I feel like the upgrades the 21 has would be worth it
I wish you made this video 6 months ago, back in December I got my 2021 Supra. I thought the 21 was going to be better because of all the updates plus I couldn't find a good deal on a 2020
The 2020 makes sense from the standpoint that less power equals longer engine life. That is for someone that can be happy with the stock engine power of the 2020. I would rather upgrade the suspension and brakes for a starting point anyway. I enjoy a challenging road more than a 1/4 mile race, anyway ...
I have the 2020 Z4 M40i and it does.I have 14k in it and before the oil change I had to take it to the dealership for a free quart.I had a 06 M3 before and it took a quart always around 4K miles into the oil change.I am used to BMW engines.
As an A91 owner in Cali. I’m glad my ECU is lock. I won’t have the urge to try to mod. Plus , Cali smog and BARS no joke out here. It’s not even worth the headaches. Lmao.
I just bought a 2021 3.0 Premium brand new for 51.8 before taxes. Not in a rush to tune at all, but definitely hope its tune-able within the next year or two :)
I think this will give you time to really enjoy the car and it's current limits. Doing a few bolt-ons here and there if wanted, will give you a better step approach. Having this time will also help eck out any issues that can be covered under warranty!
After watching ur video last month i went with supra instead of c8 and I'm really happy, men act like kids when they see it. People just scream of that's supra and shit when they see it
Glad I got my 2020. Still stock and just hit 8k miles, love the car. If 2021's dont get their shit together with Fast 9 coming out the 2020's value might shoot up
Why do they lock certain 2021 Supras ECUs but not all? That is strange. I wonder if they are concerned about the 2021 reliability and thus made the decision to lock the ECU after getting some data back from test mules early in production of the 2021.
Thnx for vid. But just curious on a few things of the 2020 vs 2021. How different is the 6 port vs the 2 port? What does that mean for potential power/tq building goals if say the 2021 ecu was cracked and tuneable. Will the 2021 have the higher ceiling on the stock motor? Same question goes for other things you briefly mentioned, like the 2021 has different compression and pistons? If so, how will that also play a role in someone trying to get the most out of their stock motor 2020 vs 2021?
I have never modded a car before so the 2021/22 would be fine for me. I would like to make some cosmetic mods (wheels, tint, splitters, and such), and maybe some bolt items such as charge pipe, intake, and any other preventative items. I already know the car is pretty fast stock so not too worried about that. Side note, I discovered your change about 4 days ago and have enjoyed your M2 and Supra builds. I am actually trying to decide between the two myself. If you had to chose one, which did you enjoy driving and owning more?
A lot of people were happy to get the 2021 because it came with more power. Looking like the 2020 is the way to go regarding reliability and the ability to mod it.
I have a 2021 Supra got it tuned through Ecutek and have had no issues with the oil consumption. I had to get it bench unlocked and it’s a crazy whip 😉
@@peterr5243 Next year I'm going to be in the market again. Looking at a supra and GTR R35. If I do pick a supra would be 2020. I'll be putting down 10k-15k depends on the deal I get on the supra.
Typing this while listening to above video, so maybe you cover this, or have covered it in the past: Are you using the oem spec oil or did you go to something heavier?
Just like that one girl that got the low oil light warning and proceeded to drive it because she said she had to get to the gym. Guess what? She blew her engine up, blames it on toyota, deletes the video where she said and showed herself driving it low on oil, and complained how long it took for Toyota to put a new engine in it. Then her simps (because she’s apparently famous due to OnlySimps) started trashing both Toyota and BMW... mostly BMW. Then some people reminded her how it blew up in the first place and that it was a sign that she wasn’t meant to have a car if she can’t take care of it. It is what it is. For me it’s between a used A90 Supra or a used G20 M340i in that nice blue color as my next car once I’m done with college. Those extra seats and doors may come in handy later on. Both are amazing cars, but I’m gonna want to have just one car for a good 2 years before I get another one. The G20 M340i seems like the more practical one, that’s what’s appealing a bit more to me 😅
2021 Here. Proper break in with track use after 1200k. 7500k now, no problems so far. My buddy has a jb4 21 with 4k no issues with proper break in. We think the oil issues probably come from beating on the car too early, just our thoughts
I know this may not really matter, but YOU are the one who convinced me to look more into the MK5 Supra. After watching some of your videos, I was set on test driving one. The day of the test drive, one appeared in my garage. I have a 2021. I’ll tune it after the warranty is up (with the new crack) but until then I’m just here to enjoy her.
whatever you say , whether "high performance" or "german engines" ,filling up oil every 1000 miles is not normal at all. Saying that means all german engines(specifically bmw's) or high performance cars drains oil in same level as the supra. Thinking of Track only BMW S1000RR even does not drain oil that fast, I can easily say that 1000 miles oil drain is not normal. Does anyone actually know why it drains oil that fast? Is it because wrong grade of oil? I'd assume 5w30 or 5w40 can be suitable for 3L turbo engine. Or is it because something to do within the enigne? something to do with oil filter? Is there an issue with the coolant system? I'd love to know the reason why it drains oil as I am looking to get Supra.
I got lucky and happened to buy an earlier manufactured '21 (built 3/20) and it has no oil consumption issues so far (it is a 3.0 base...so not premium; pricing on the base model was very lucrative...well under 50k in the winter for a brand new base 3.0)... I've been dailying mine and its killin me... 6k miles and I got it in Feb.
@@justinwallace3848 soooooo I’m capping? Cmon bro no need to lie. Call Speed Industry to see if I’m lying. My tuners name is Jeff and my car is sick. So before you think someone is lying do some research. If the car was built before a certain date is it tunable, including 2021 cars…. No cap bruh
@@anthonyschluter8531 That is a bad decision on their part. If something occurs with the engine, the first thing you do is look at the oil or also smell the oil. Also you can see if there is a possibility it could be overfilled. The really bad scenario is a shop might say they changed the oil but, didn't. You can't check the dipstick to verify. Or perhaps they made an honest mistake and "thought" they changed the oil. Again this creates a big problem. Without a dipstick, none of that troubleshooting can occur. Some people claim BMW are just disposable limited use autos. I guess without a dipstick, they are probably correct. Just lease one for a year. You shouldn't need a dipstick for that.
Not saying this is in the same league but my friends 2017 NSX ecu still isn't unlocked. Now that could be because there aren't as many people working on unlocking it but I feel like if a car that's several years old now isn't unlocked and the C8 still isn't unlocked... we may be waiting a long while on the 21's to be unlocked
@@ThicWhips oh agreed lol but it’s just crazy that the 21 hasn’t been unlocked and the C8 hasn’t been unlocked. Also have you heard any news on a 22? I haven’t seen anything yet
i wish you would move to each topic quicker for me, you spend too much time pontificating. i own a 2021 you have valuable information ill subscribe to your channel ive owned 4 bmw m3 -m4 '9' all together. bmw cars burn oil, your completely right people exaggerate issues. 4000 miles added 2 quarts already if you drive like an idiot 'which i do' your going burn oil. great looking car, o usually keep a car for at cost a year, but i have no pan on ditching my suprai dont know how ti become the next doug demure, but you should have more followers, you know the information great job!
Toyota reversed engineered that B58 engine for all 2020 models. They bumped the engines HP for the 2021 model and Toyota didn’t do a tear down for this years models 🥲. In my opinion the 2020 models are the most reliable BMW engine on the market
@@supranova730 I honestly won’t be surprised if they did it for safety reasons maybe. That car has a lot of potential once flashed and tuned properly it’s crazy.
That is the million dollar question. Why are some ECUs locked and some are not. There were even some 2020s with locked ECUs but they could be cracked. If the late 2020 models and all of the 2021 models had a locked ECU it would make sense. But randomly locking late 2020 models and late 2021 model ECUs make no sense.
Oil consumption and 4 tires in almost 2 years, those have been my issues. I absolutely love the car. I was actually the first supra gr owner in Washington state, and I loved the attention the car had, well still getting lol. Question anybody knows what type of coolant the car uses?
What happened after your brake recall? Did the dealer reset your ECU and did you lose your tune? I just had my 2020 recall done but I haven’t tuned it yet and the dealer told me the recall didn’t lock the ECU. I have a launch edition and is the same color ext/int as yours. I love the car and I haven’t even moded it yet. Yes some of those forum discussions get freakin crazy. I just have to laugh at the ridiculousness to keep myself sane!
"Internet can blow things up", that is good in sense of stocks and Cyrpto, lol Warning ⚠️ I know for a fact, you can not tune 2021 Audi RS5 "they fried the CPU", local Charlotte shop (I will not call them out).
Toyota tuned the Supra so they have access to the ECU. It is them locking it. I also wondered why some 2021 were locked. I heard some 2020 were locked but they could be cracked. Now, apparently, Toyota locked the 2021 with stronger encryption. I hypothesized that maybe Toyota got some test data back from some test mules early in the production of the 2021 and that made them think maybe the 2021 might have some reliability issues so it is best to lock the ECU. It is very interesting to why this actually happened.
Hello, now I am confused. You are talking about the date on the ecu to see if it’s tunable. Here in Europe we only get the 340hp version. Even now in 2021 and the next years. The 380 hp version will not come to Europe. So if I buy a 2021 340hp, is it possible it can’t be tuned? Or is it just the 380hp’s ecu that is blocked ?
2021 will soon be unlocked but honestly. In the near future maybe 22’s or 23’s. Bmw software will be impossible to unlock according to a lot of people. So tuning gonna be almost dead
Sounds like Toyota placed their codes on them 2021 ECUs and no one will be able to crack them.. either the 2020s ECU bout to be more costly or standalone like the A80s will be more common.
I have a 2020 launch- its not that you have 0 issues, its that you are not consuming like this 2021s. Check your charge pipe, you will have some oil in there from the blowby. Every supra has this issue and catch cans do not help. That being said, I never had to add oil so there is definitely something up with the 2021s
Would you go for the jarama race track edition running the lower power to avoid the oil issue n if u wanted to map it asap, or wait and get the 2023 auto? Looking at it 12 months on…
BMW "Bowel Movement oh Wheels",just wait German cars fall apart fast, you can't upgrade that WW2 Auto Tank. Toyota should have used a Lexus engine, not a German unreliable piece of crap.
Excellent job! The locked ECU’s are actually saving the warranties for those that would’ve tuned. I’m seeing consumption @3K, and knew about the issues beforehand, but the draw of that Refraction Blue was too strong to stay away. 😄
When my friend bought his supra, this came straight from the dealer. If the car is tuned and modified, they said the warranty still covers it. Which surprised me and I kept asking and the man behind the desk said they cover everything. Even if you change your wheels, so long as they're the same spec wheels as the stock ones, they will cover that along with.
Thank you for making this video. I've always wanted to know the difference. I never knew about the DME tune abilities. Are less company's making turbo upgrades for the 6 port heads?
Without the ability to tune no company’s have made different turbos for the a91 as they would need to flash the DME to setup the car right for the tune
There are aftermarket turbo options as well as hybrid turbo options already available for both 2020 and 2021 supras, as well as manifolds. Some of the 2021’s have pre 6/20 ecus meaning they are tunable.
