Chris MacAskill, aka. Baldy, likes the sound of gas motors, he likes the look of them and he likes shifting. While Baldy was doing an interview with the Zero CEO Sam Paschel, Sam offered him a 2020 Zero DSR Black Forest Edition motorcycle for two months. The Zero DSR/BF Black Forest Electric Dual-Sport Motorcycle delivers near silent 146 Nm of torque and can handle dual sport terrain with its crash bars and Pirelli MT-60 tires. In this real world long term review follow Chris, his wife and his gas-riding friends as they experience an electric bike for the first time, learning all about electric charging and electric range, take the bike shopping, learn whether or not a baguette fits in the top luggage, go on longer and longer road trips, almost run out of battery and go riding on trails. This video answers real world questions about riding and owning an electric adventure bike.

Great Video Baldy. I once owned a 2017 Zero DSR for 3 months. I love riding it all over the place, even from Cincinnati to Barber Motorsports Speedway for the Vintage Weekend, I believe it was in September. My Zero was Toast, when a lady rear ended me on a highway exit ramp, as I was sitting at a Red light. I miss riding it Soo Much. I ride a BMW F700GS now & just completed my first MABDR trip, a few weeks ago with Piston Society.

Zero makes the most well put together electric motorcycles. I just wish they had DC fast charging option. If a bike gives you 100 miles range in about 45 minutes, range won't really be an issue in long rides.

These kind of bikes only get better each year, talking charging speeds and range. Handling, braking and build quality are already at levels we know from industry staples. Prices will likely take a while to get more affordable. Never hearda yous, but this test review was fun and lively, man. Great variety of activities in a concise video, great "cast", top quality!

Just came across your channel. Love seeing more "seasoned" riders like your selves (as opposed to some more aggressive riders reviews focused on all out performance) reviewing and enjoying bikes out on the road. Most certainly a great review, but you two are a also just blast to watch. Knowingly or not, you put smiles on a lot of faces. Keep making great content!

Thanks for the down to earth review. My work tested one (sans luggage) and it is a hoot. Roosts on demand. Lots of power. Quiet. Only complaint was the screen did not provide enough wind coverage for me (6’4”) nor the other test rider (6’0”). Anything over about 45mph blasted us. Other than that we liked it and hope the company buys one.

I had a DSR + Power Tank for a short time. I demo'ed the DSR without Charge or Power tank, then ordered one with the Power Tank. Upon getting the bike, I immediately regretted that. Don't get the Power Tank, it makes the bike so top heavy that it isn't as fun to ride, plus it doesn't go that much farther, maybe 30 miles and you lose quick charging. You might check out the FX or FXS models. I personally prefer those to the SR/DSR bikes. None of the Zero bikes can go very far, so might as well have one that is fun to ride a short distance. The FXS is a hoot to ride around town. Like a REALLY fast mountain bike.
@jogordon1530
@jogordon1530 2 года назад
Thanks for the info on that. That wouldn’t have crossed my mind in adding to the weight of the bike. I guess my next question would be, if you found it too top heavy, could you have it removed? I’m a bit unfamiliar as to how the bikes are put together from basic to extras.

Pretty sweet! About the only thing electric needs to solve is distance but I'm sure that's coming. There are also third parties looking at and developing better chargers. I was curios about the belt drive. As you know, there are more than a few bikes equipped with belts and they do quite well. The biggest deal seems to come toward the end of life. Unlike a chain, once it starts to lose the teeth, it begins to come apart quickly as the belt slips which causes the next tooth to slam into the drive pulley. Based on my experience, belts are recommended for replacement between 24-40 thousand miles but often last much longer, like 60k. The primary reason for waiting has more to do with cost than anything. Great review.

Old review but I just bought a 23' DSR 14.4 yesterday, are they supposed to be really noisy at at slow speed acceleration? Mine rolls quietly and only makes a howling sound under acceleration, I have checked alignment and tension, it's almost ear piercing riding at slow speeds with no helmet. Actually, I missed the part on the video where you were accelerating at slow speeds, I guess they are pretty loud in this area. Oh, I had an Alta Redshift, it was pretty awesome.

Ooooo, the TAT!! You know, I love this bike and can't think of one I'd rather ride on that trip, but...worrying about my next charge every 100 miles bugged me. And it's in the land of Teslas.

Haha. You'd have been doing laps around that school parking lot all night. That bike will go a dozen miles on backroads after 0%, and at least 5-10 miles past 0% and 0 miles range. First hitting 0% shows 5-8 miles range left, so you'd get those miles then maybe 5-10 more. I also wish the Zeros had more regen braking, but I think that's the most they can have without needing the brake light to flash on deceleration One of my favorite things about my Zero is being able to have conversations while riding side by side with other Zeros. You and your wife must've enjoyed many quiet conversations while ninja-slicing through the mountains

It's getting there but it's not there yet. There's a whole range / rate / charge speed / price balance to strike and it hasn't been struck yet. Cars are there now (and getting better every year). But the motorcycle manufacturers need to keep at it.

Good question. She's 5'6" and was on her toes, giving her less leverage because the bike is fairly tall. She wants a 350cc-class machine and this is more like 650ish.

Don’t you know, they don’t build motorcycles for us short people - only for the 6 footers !!! It drives me nuts because I’m in that boat around 5 foot 6 inches or more like 5 foot 5 inches since I’m over 50 and starting to shrink. Well looks like I’ll be looking at the basic DSR instead. Bummer..
@jogordon1530
@jogordon1530 2 года назад
Did you not pay for the fast charger on the bike or did your bike only have the basic charger on it? I’m looking into this bike as I would like to do some short trips once I retire. However, at 5 foot 5 inches and 171 pounds, I’m wondering if I can handle it. I’ve been driving motor bikes for 35 years - have had everything from an 1981 Honda 400 to a Honda Superhawk, BMW 1200 and BMW 750GS. The Kawasaki Versys was the highest sitting bike at 33 inches and tough to maneuver even in my garage. You at 6/4 make it sound like it’s a matchbox so it’s difficult to guess how some of us women would make out with this bike. If I’m gonna spend the money on electric, I want something that has luggage. The basic DSR looks as though there is no optional luggage or wind screens which bums me out. I may end up going back to gas if I can handle the weight of the bike. Thanks for the review - yeah, If I was over 6 foot, I would surely buy this mother.

Wonderful bike but it‘s not made for touring. I‘ve really tried to make a go of it with my Black Forest but after multiple trips where I couldn‘t find a functioning charger, endless hours of waiting to get enough juice to ride home, I‘m going back to ICE. I‘m trading my DSR for a Triumph Tiger 850. I‘ll miss the Zero, but if you want to tour you need something else. Great second bike or commuter bike, but tough to live with if you want to go far.

I really don't understand why a 2020 bike has incandescent light bulbs instead of LEDs. Especially an electric bike where every watt saved means more riding, less charging. I only guess it has to do with Zero being small company. Probably they have to scavenge leftover old stock parts from big manufacturers in order to keep the final product price kind of reasonable and still make a profit. What do you think ?
