As you may remember, I owned a 2019 Can Am Ryker 900 ACE for about a year before deciding to move up to the Spyder. The new models were a little beyond my budget, but I did find a very nice 2018 Can Am RT Limited and with the trade in value the dealer gave me on my Ryker, it was a doable upgrade. Your comparisons between ride comfort between the models is spot on. I especially like the power steering on the RT. After coming off a long ride on the Ryker I usually felt like I had been rode hard and put away wet. No at all with the RT. While I have fond memories of my adventures on the Ryker, I don't regret moving on to the RT.
Oh ya for sure I enjoyed my time with the Ryker but I need more comfort and amenities that a Spyder can offer. Don't blame you at all, I would've upgraded eventually if I didn't have a Harley touring bike on my bucket list.
Great video. I just test rode an RT and F3 after owning a Ryker for 2 years. Other than shifting, the thing I kept forgetting was to actually turn the key. As you well know, with the Ryker, you pop it on and off you go!
Lol yup I hear you on the key. I went from a traditional key bike to Ryker for a year and because the ryker key was out of sight, I would forget to take the key out some times.
Will probably be buying a Sea to Sky in a couple of days. Loved the video. I have been torn about leaving my 19 Roadking for the Spyder, but this makes it sound pretty appealing. Plus my wife can drive while I sleep on the back.
I love my Road King, but one thing I miss about my spyder rss was on longer trips when I got tired I could push on a little further without fear of going down due to a bad decision while I was fatigued. Godspeed
Just Bought a 2021 Can Am Spider RT Limited and Loving it, I has a 2014 Goldwing and getting up in age 67 now and I dont have to worry about putting my feet down in a Ohio Chuck hole and dropping the bike. Waiting on a delivery on a Kompact Kamp Mini Mate Popup camper like I had with the Goldwing years ago. I want to get out and enjoy. Covid19 is just getting on my nerves. Time to enjoy life again! Vic
Just bought a 2021 f-3S in November of last year. Very impressed so far, although I have only put about less than 100 miles on it so far. It got pretty cold here in November. Then the snow started. Wasn’t too bad this year but it was way too cold to ride. I don’t have a windshield yet but I will get one before Summer/Spring season starts. I have been ridding 2 wheel bikes my whole life and have always had a shield.looking at some other stuff as well. I have always done oil changes break jobs and the like on all our cars/bikes etc. I’m not a mechanic by trade but have been a shade tree mechanic all my life. I may let them do breaks and alinement but I’ll probably do my own simple stuff like oil changes. Thanks for the ride. 😉
Nice F3s is pretty cool. The riding position is just like the ryker I had just bigger with a lot more options. I am not even that handy to do my own oil change. But that is awesome, congrats on your new ride.
Good review. We had a 2013 RT then a 2017 RT and they are very comfortable for 2 up which my wife and I do all the time on club rides. Yes you do have to blip the throttle to smooth out the jerkiness in the shifting, Takes about 500 miles to get used to the highway handling most people new to three wheels say. Steering was maybe a little too light and experience riders always told newbies not to grip the handlebars too tight. It’s stable though at 80 mph. Tons of storage. You might like the F3 better as I heard it’s sportier.
My Indian Roadmaster has all of those amenities to include the ability to raise and lower the windshield. But I still love the Can Am Spyders and Rykers. My wife’s 2019 RT Limited rides awesome on the highway and on twisties in the Georgia mountains.
I had a 16 Road King and was in a motorcycle accident, I lost ALOT of strength and balance isn't the best so I test drove the 2021 RT limited and immediately fell in love and I'm back in the wind which I missed SO much. I put a "pedal commander" and have it on "sport 1" and WOW, did that ever wake up the throttle response, sport+ 4 is absolutely insane 🤣 0-60 4.5 seconds and you can do a big fat burnout. It took a couple weeks to adjust but I'm glad I did. Wind is wind
Niceee.. congrats on the purchase and I don't care what kind of motorcycle you're on. The feeling of wind hitting you is the same. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
Nice video. I have a 2011 Can-Am Spyder RT I bought 2 years ago with 1000 miles. I drive it on I-95 at 80-90 mph almost daily. The ride is smooth and responsiveness is very good. I've had to replace the battery (under warranty) and I bought new tires $500. Maintenance is costly but an oil change is easy just remove the front left panel. I keep mine plugged up in the garage to ensure the battery is fully charged. I also added a light kit and a Bluetooth adapter to connect my Android, IPhone or mp3 player. Looking to add front & rear cameras to eliminate the video following my eyes.
I have an RTL and riding highway is not bad with a shield or run the electric windshield up if you want less wind in the face. Very SMOOTH. Hello from Cumming GA
When it comes to costs for service, it really depends on which Can-Am dealer you take your Spyder into. I've heard the horror stories of a routine oil change and maintenance up to $600 as you pointed out but my local dealer the price is around $225. The BRP OEM oil change kit is a little over $100 itself so I find the total cost for parts/service under $250 reasonable. Unfortunately for some folks, they only have one Can-Am dealership nearby so it's difficult to shop around.
True that. When you have dealer in your area the price will be dictated by that store. Problem is that we have 3 near me and they are all equally expensive. 550 to 600 for Premium service.
Excellent video. I've never driven a bike and considering getting one.. Just starting my research. I'm thinking this could be the way to go for this ole gal;)
I think the Cam Am Spyder is a great alternative to 2 wheel riding with a ton of advantages over a 2 wheeled ride. And coming from never having rode a bike before, you'll have no muscle memory issues to deal with.
I have the 2018 F3 Limited. There is an rpm sweet spot for upshifting. The hardest one for me to find is from 5th to 6th. The 1330 like high rpms after 2nd gear.
I have the 2021 RT Limited. I rode a VTX1300S through 2020. I miss that bike, but I am really enjoying the RT. FYI - the comfort seat is not that comfortable on long hauls. The heated seats are nice though in colder weather.
@@RideAboutNow the first time I stopped by I was shocked it was all older women working in the front sales area but as soon as they engaged me I realized they were well versed on the Can Am Spyder Motorcycles and they were riders as well. I learned a lot about the Spyder that day.
Well done! I appreciate you showing the different bags. Did you sit on the Sea To Sky? I'm curious if the seat is a lot more comfortable. I'm going to be buying one or a limited very soon. I think their weakness is their nav apps. I read that they are not effective. I agree that Apple car play or Android auto is needed. I'm adding a Garmin Zumo. I'm moving off of 2 wheels due to health reasons.
Thanks Jim. I never sat on the sea to sky bike but the Can Am person did mention the seat was more comfortable than the limited. Early congrats on getting the limited model. Looks awesome.
Thank you for posting. I am investigating purchasing one of these; I am an ex-Goldwing rider and itching to get back onto the highway. The information about the cost of service (oil change, etc.) was a bit shocking. Is that for real? Guess I better download an owner's manual and start studying. Beautiful in Georgia. Be safe and blessed.
I would own one if I could afford the sticker price. The service is kind of high and they call it premium service. I would definitely get a maintenance plan from Can Am if they offer it so I am covered there anywhere I go.
I convince my wife to start riding she had some experience on dirt bikes in the army but had not really ridden motorcycles much in her life I talked her into taking the three wheel course and offered to attend with her even though I have my motorcycle licenses. I told her if she got her license I would get all of her gear if she decided to ride. She loved the Riker that we trained on and was getting ready to buy one the first day when we took our lunch break I convinced her to be patient finish the course get her license and then let’s do some real research and determine working a ride and she wanted to do. The Ryker is awesome and fun as hell to drive but if you’re going to do long distance you need to look at Spyder it comes with more amenities and it’s and that seat is amazing especially for long rides. If you had a Goldwing the RT is going to fit your riding style the best. It rides well, got power, and all of the amenities you want for touring. If you want a more aggressive riding Spyder with considerable amenities get the F3 it’s got the best of both worlds. It’s aggressive like the Ryker and have the amenities of the more luxury liner the RT. I currently have a 2017 Indian Roadmaster and I love my bike but I also love my wife’s 2019 Spyder RT Limited it’s one of the best riding two up touring bikes on the market in my opinion.
I wanted the spyder, but couldnt afford the price. Im happy with my 2020 Ryker Rally. If i did upgrade, i would probably get the f3 model. Its a little more sporty looking and i really dont need all that storage
I have a ‘16 RT Limited, rides great on the big road. A recommendation though replace the upgraded sway bar. Service costs for the Spyder are expensive but for what the techs have to do I’m glad to pay the big bucks.
You're right about the service costs, especially compared to the Ryker. But when you consider how much tupperware they have to remove just to do anything, it's money well spent.
I have a 2020 RT. I also own a 2010 Harley RK. But at my age 59 I was starting to feel less confident riding with my wife on two wheels. It was a tough decision between the triglide and the RT. Specially for me that enjoys our Harley Davidson culture. But my wife as a passenger liked the RT. She didn’t like the Triglyde look of two wheels on the back. Also at times she felt heat been trapped around her legs area because of the rear fenders. So I was happy to spend $7k less than a Triglyde. I agreed with your review. The ride is very easy to ride, good music sounds and very comfortable. However is a bit boring for my riding style so I added foot pegs, Ella suspension, and a Comander. Now is a bit more fun. 😉
That is cool man I wanted tye new gen RT but too expensive. Also the service here is through the roof for Can Ams. I am really digging the free wheeler but I prefer the reverse trike myself. But man all those mods to your RT sound really good.
I'm a Harley girl but I'm considering the Spyder over the Tri-glide. The price of the Tri-glide then spending more money to get rid of the extreme heat problem is ridiculous to me. It's a hard decision giving up my beautiful Deluxe but at 57, I'd get more use from the Spyder.
@@pamenglert920 my advice keep that beautiful deluxe for now. Ride the Spyder and compare. If you really like it then slowly transition out of the Harley. At 57 you still young to ignore two wheels.
Awesome vid. Thanks for posting. I've not ridden since 2009. I had a bought of anxiety I couldn't get over. Now, I'm 43, wanting to get back on a bike, but want total leisure. Boyfriend thinks 3 wheels would be a good option to get me back on the road and be confident enough to be on my own if I choose to go solo riding. The price tag hurts my soul though. Thoughts on older models?
Thank you for watching. Absolutely I think 3 wheels would be a great option to get back into riding. Prices are ridiculous but there are some very good condition used ones on offer. Just have to find them.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't go with anything older then say a 2014. Prior to that, Can Am offered the 998cc engine, which was high rev. The newer 1330 engines in the 2014 and up are a much better, lower maintenance engine. When I updated my ride, I went with the 2018 RT Limited with no regrets.
How was the noise level compared with the Ryker? Engine noise, road noise, wind noise? I find I need ear plugs on the Ryker due to high rpm of the cvt even with a big windshield - so I’m wondering if the RT is a quieter ride overall?
I wish I had known that trick with the throttle before doing my test ride in Gainesville. I liked the RT but found that the handlebars would hit my knees when making tight turns. I did notice the twitchy steering at 55 or so. The initial steering input would make it feel a little weird.
@@RideAboutNow I rode the RT without the rear case. If the same crew from Gainesville did the one you went to, I was offered the Limited but went without for some reason. I actually bought a Ryker Rally the next day. Lol
I really liked your video. I own a 2018 Harley-Davidson Trike and I'm thinking about changing to a machine like your test drive. I want to increase my comfort. I understand that with a Spyder RT Limited, I would be satisfied. Am I right?
I have harley as well and yes I think this will be better interest of handling for sure. Ease of use with the semi auto. But keep in mind the Harley exhaust sound will not be there obviously and there is no apple car play and Android auto. But having said that it has all the comfort amenities and gadgets you will need. I say go for a test ride and I'm sure you'll like it. It's very smooth and comfy.
Why the high maintenance. Cost? How often do you have to do maint? What all do they do during maint.? Seems to be on the very high side Let me know please, thank you
I think it is every 6k miles. The labor charges are ridiculous that make the maintenance high. They have 2 types. A regular oil change ($250-$300) and a 'premium oil change' ($600) Premium is where they give the bike a once over. I feel that they would do that anyways on a regular oil change.
@@RideAboutNow I checked with the local shop and the service rep Said around 300 and they check Over the whole bike including hooking up to the computer,so that Seemed pretty fair. Thanks for getting back to me
i bought a 2015 rt limited new in 2015 now has 25000 miles. service is big $$$$ lol had fuel injectors, fuel pump, plugs ,2 sensors, 2 new front tires 1 back tire ,front and rear brakes oil n filter change = $250.00
@@RideAboutNow ACTUALLY, this rt has been a pain in the ass, first 2 years it spent at the dealership. the oil was contaminated with fuel ,dealer said not so. so i sent a sample of oil to analyze which was 20%of fuel .only then did i get theyre attention. unbelievable ! its been doing ok lately . peace
I tried both ways and the jerkiness is still there albeit not as much, but this happens mostly when you pin the throttle open. According to the crew from Can Am there is no need to close the throttle when shifting. Thanks for watching.
Service can be expensive because of the labor cost. Oil change isn’t 600. Only about 200. However Easy to remove parts and Do the service yourself… RU-vid is your friend..LOL
That is what everyone gets you on are these labor charges per hour. But the $600 bucks I was referring to was what they call premium service I guess. Right you are just the oil changes are cheaper.
@@RideAboutNow im curious about the push button shifting since the ryker is just twist and go i cant ride a motorcycle due to arthritis in my hands it hurts to much to use the clutch
Muddy,There is virtually no effort in the shifting process on a RTL. What I'd be concerned with with your ailment is the reverse procedure. Left thumb on top button & simultaneously hitting the downshift paddle with your index or middle finger. THAT might pose a challenge.
They claim its premium service where they check the bike for any issues. LoL. So I asked them on just the oil change if the service tech sees something wrong will they not tell me about the issue? I just got a stare.
really it's time for it to be an 8 gear automatic, with the ability to shift manually. it needs way more lights and bigger lights. no reason not to add an airbag. it's a little cramped. the cost is crazy. i can see 18K - 23K loaded. they should do custom colors for another 1000.00. is it smoother than say a goldwing. service $600, man, that is high. that feels like gouging.
I think they should have a dct in there like the goldwing. I haven't ridden the gold wing but I imagine the GW is still smoother from what I have seen on videos.
@@FirstAlarm59 I had a couple of other bikes i was considering but they were too expensive. The goldwing tour 30k plus. And the spyder rt limited was around 29k. Made my 22k harley seem like a bargain lol. Even the regular goldwing was 24k plus and the dealers for both weren't giving a single dollar off the sticker here.
@@RideAboutNow I’ve ridden the DCT GW 3 times. I think it’s advantage is that It’s fully automatic. My ‘22 RTL is very smooth shifting. Just as smooth as the DCT.
