Hey everyone! I appreciate all of you for checking out my video. I made a Part 2 "follow-up" video to answer some questions and go more in-depth with the pros + cons of each individual engine. Check it out if you'd like- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IdvFLejWfY4.html
I’m def a fan of exhaust sound ... my Sunday driver is a ‘14 GT500. But I’m glad I chose the 3.5 for my ‘19 F150 ... absolutely flawless performance and fun to drive.
Lucky! I love those 13-14 GT500’s. Since you have a V8 in the stable already, you can just drive the Mustang when you want V8 rumble! Nothing wrong with that
V8 'rumble' is nice if you're cruising to the drive-in. Get on the highway for a 300 or 1200 mile drive and 'peace and quiet' beats 'V8 rumble' hands down. My 3.5 Eco has been on a bunch of 300 mile trips - dozens last summer - and it's a dream on the highway. Smooth, quiet, and good mpg's. (Though nothing gets good mpg's when pulling a trailer.)
What's the most impressive to me is that there is not as much of a step down at all between the 2.7 and the 3.5/5.0. The 2.7 is basically the base engine but isn't that much slower than the 2 premium engines. My 2.7 cc 2wd went a 14.2 in the 100% stock thats wild for the entry level engine.
The 2.7 is a fantastic engine! Sometimes I have to look at the window sticker in new f150’s because I can’t tell the difference from the 3.5 until I really get on it
I just bought a 22 f150 Platinum Black appearance, with 3.73 gears and 5.0. 4x4 Fully loaded. It came with a leveling kit, and 34 inch tall Heavy Nitto Ridge grapplers. I got 14.4 seconds 1/4 mile based on Dragy. This thing is quick. With lighter/ slightly smaller tires I should be able to get 14.1-14.2
I still love my 18 2.7/10 speed 2wd regular cab short bed F150. I did have to put better wheels/tires on it though. The stock 17" tires are a joke considering this truck's capabilities. I feel like I drive a 90's Lightning but with way better than the old slow V6 fuel economy. Best of both worlds. Mine is Leadfoot grey with the sport body color bumpers. Looks really nice. had several people ask me(after I added the OEM+ look 20" wheel/tire upgrade) if it was a special performance version.
@@mscottlawrence2037faster than the 3.5 and the 5.0 stock for stock. And im at 100k miles no repairs no nothing. Last owner had it sitting for 1 year straight. Oil was black and it had goo in it. Did a engine flush and she runs like a champ.
Me too. The sound of the 5.0 V8 is much more enjoyable than the EcoBoost. In my opinion, the way a truck should sound. But the EcoBoosts are awesome as well. I Whipple supercharged my 2015 5.0 and I love it. Ford are the best truck's period. In my opinion.
@@kevinpence8590 I'm a Chevy man. But ford does the best trucks, hands down. The V8 should be bored and stroked to 5.3 Liters. The tq would happen lower in the RPM range for it's peak. The EcoBoost has internal issues that slow it down after about 40k miles. The coyote V8 is an Excellent V8. The V8 is most excellent. An incredible motor.
The newest gen of the 3.5 Ecoboost doesn't have the issues of the previous generations,in my opinion. A good friend has a 2021 3.5 f150 and after factory warranty was up he upgraded the turbo downpipes, cold air intake and a tune and now it puts out 500hp. But before the upgrade it was at 68,000 miles and still spanking stock 5.0's
@@shawnwade302 I can make 500 hp with the Bullit intake manifold and shorty headers w max flow cats. I can toss a paxton SC on it with air to air intercooler and stoke the 307 ci to 321 ci. Toss a larger TB w 1" spacer for ram effect and a dino tune to make an EZ 700 hp and 655 lb ft. It costs cash. But I can do it. The 5.0 has less that can go wrong with it, and is extremely durable.
@@shawnwade302 there is only one current 3.5 EcoBoost T6. And it's only been lightly revised. Mainly with more boost, better valves and assembly. And newer, forged rods and crank.
Change your oil every 5000, maybe 6000 miles with Mobi1 synthetic and that thing will last forever. I know people say you should use a synthetic blend, but until mine starts acting up, burning oil, knocking, idling rough, I'm sticking with Mobil1. Eight years old and not a single problem. Still sips gas and pulls like a bull.
@@CajunRulez I don't get the 'synthetic blend' purpose. It's like saying 'there's only a little bit of pee in the punch bowl.' Full synthetic, and definitely do NOT use the Fram 'orange canister of death' oil filters.
All trucks are expensive so people saying price are not being fair. I was the guy that laughed at v6 full size trucks and would never have one and also a gm guy then I drove a 3.5 EB and now have an 18 platinum. I looked at gmc denalis and they were higher than the fords... the 3.5 is a monster and hasn't been dethroned just yet. Also I average 20 mpg normal driving but can tow 14,000 lbs. It drives like a deisel when towing. The low end grunt is insane. Good stuff bro
Test drove the 5.0 and 2.7. For me the throttle response felt better in the 2.7, it's also faster off the line for sure. 5.o sounds amazing but you don't really feel that power until your up to like 4 5k rpms. And I'm not sure about cylinder deactivation yet. Think I'm gonna go with the 2.7 even tho I was all about the v8 before I drove the 2.7
3.5 dominates the 5.0 in every aspect other than the sound but the sound dont win races or make your di*k any bigger and a borla on a v8 come on guys were not in highschool anymore if you ask me if you need that much sound to be noticed your compensating for something 🤔. 3.5 is much smoother all around I love how it gets so much hp and torque at such a lower rpm than the 5.0 you barely need to hit the gas were the 5.0 you need to push it and it feels laggy until high rpm I've owned them all and I love the power of the 3.5 no comparison. 🤷♂️
@@JVette01 the preference is sound only though and I can't understand how someone would rather a less powerful truck because of the sound. Forced induction v6s are taking over this new Era are more efficient more power better towing better everything other than sound .🤷♂️
@@JVette01 actually the 5.0 has oil consumption issues to date and the 3.5 new gens have been proven to be a bit more reliable now. Im friends with some of the most top notch ford techs here in Canada so let's just say I probably research too much but it never hurts to be educated look it up for yourself . 🤷♂️ n/a is quickly becoming a thing of the past even the 2022 toyota tundra is getting rid of the useless v8 and going to turbo charged v6 F/I also the fuel mileage plays a big factor those 5.0s can drink it but again your only gain is the sound and that dont make anything grow down there let's be honest.
@@SKJ--mz5ij 200k on turbo v6 in a half ton truck with no problems? I highly doubt that.... flat land commuting maybe but towing loads up steep grades quite often would probably burn out the v6 within 50000 miles if that
@@stevemino142 Not really the V6 they're all CGI blocks which are ridiculously strong. Only issue is the turbo seals wear out quick, My 2.7 at 80K turbo seals are going out which is attributed to my tune more of. The stock turbos can only handle 19 psi max, they're at 15 bone stock at least for the 2.7. May put 3.0L Ecoboost turbos on as the turbos are slightly bigger then the 3.5 and 2.7 and are safe to run on pump.
@@paulhunter9613 never owned a ford and never will but I do know a small displacement turbo gasoline motor in a full size truck is just asking for problems... overheating premature head gasket failure bad fuel mileage NA gasoline V8 is where its at if you want a capable truck that will outlast the factory warranty
All 3 are great engine choices there’s no right or wrong . Just get whatever one checks more boxes off for your needs , or what you like better . I have a 2011 5.0 with 100k miles on it , zero major issues with it . I’ve replaced the 3rd tail light , positive battery terminal connection . Other than that just basic maintenance. I’m currently looking around at the 2021 f150’s , leaning towards getting a 2.7 ecoboost , I’m not towing anything heavy . One thing I find very odd across all the engine choices now are the plastic oil pans , and oddly positioned oil drain plug .
You made me an instant fan for simply not Stomping on the pedal of these brand new trucks. I appreciate the respect you are giving them. These trucks will go to owners soon and you didn’t abuse them. Love the respect you show. Instant Fan and subscriber. Thank you
I already knew which one you would pick before i finished the video lol. You simply can't beat a V8. Even though the ecoboost might be more efficient, can do more with less yada yada, if you're going to commute with a car, you might as well have it sound good. Plus soon we won't have V8's anymore. Whatever car you own right now with a V8, chances are the next generation is gone. Forever. So might as well find the newest V8 car/truck you can find, and keep it for a long time. because they'll be gone soon. I never been a pickup guy. But my commuter is an ecoboost explorer. How i wish ford had an option for the 5.0 in it cause i would've gotten that. When this lease is over, since you can't lease a mustang GT, i think i'm going for the F150 supercrew with the 5.0.
I currently have a 2016 5.0, and previously had a 2.7, and have been looking at the 2021's mostly with the 3.5, as I might be getting a travel trailer for the summer, the 3.5 is a overall better engine for towing especially if I go up into the mountains, like he said in the videos they are all great engines.
I have had both the 2.7 and 3.5 as loaners and man for daily use I really enjoyed the 2.7 it was shocking with how good it took off and handled itself very refined engine
@@23tails15 No , the 2.7 as of 2020 models was faster 0-60 , and the 3.5 would pull on top end of course. The 21 models 3.5 are slightly tuned better , and i would be the 3.5 pulls 0-60 as well. I don't know why people get caught up in performance numbers on trucks like a sports car lol. Yes the 2.7 is a very capable motor , with considerably more low end torque then the 5.0.
Well it may be totally different these days. But I had a 5.0. it was a dog. No low rpm power at all. Had to have premium fuel! Drank oil from day one! Worst engine I've ever owned!! I'm getting the 3.5. reviews seem to be very good
I have a 2020 5.0 STX 4 wheel drive and I love it!!! Plenty of power and decent gas mileage. I’ve had a 2017 3.5 XL FX4 that was a great truck also but I like my 5.0 better!
Good video. I just got the 2.7 and it is a great motor. I had a 2019 Mustang GT and a 2019 Ranger, so I’m really familiar with Ford vehicles. I’m very happy with my STX 4x2 with the 2.7.
When I bought my F150, the dealership tried like hell to get me to go with the 3.7 L V-6 and I literally had to yell at them that I wanted the V-8 and I didn't need a 4-door, I wanted a regular cab .... so order it for me from the factory. I don't think it took more than a month later I had EXACTLY what I wanted and had asked for and much to my surprise even more. I didn't know the truck came with the famous Coyote V-8 that was in the Mustang Gt the year before, and that little truck FLIES. I am sooooo glad I got the V-8 and I would never buy another F150 without one.
Considering the 2.7 turbo six just to save some cash. I don't tow at all. The truck is just for typical home use - hauling furniture, going to the building supply or garden center. I'm sure it would be perfect for me.
Increased compression ratio + spray-on bore liner + excessive oil consumption + knocking + wet oil pump belt + cylinder deactivation = why I will forever stay away from Coyotes. Thanks ford for screwing up another engine.
@@RossLougheed I have a 2012 Ford F150 Fx4 Super Crew Cab with the 5.0L and 132,000 miles on it and I have had zero issues. (Knock on wood). Average MPG is 22.4 consistently. And I have only had 1 spark plug that "looked" fouled upon inspection during 100,000 mile tune up. It still functioned. The 5.0L has always treated me good. I had a 1999 Ford F150 with the 5.0L and it too was flawless. My old neighbor bought it from me in 2009 when I bought a Dodge Ram 1500 (Will never do that again). He is still.driving that 99 F150 as a work truck. I drove that train wreck of a dodge for 3 years had to fight the dealership with every issue. And I lost money on trade in when I bought my 2012 FX4. But........ Couldn't be happier with the FX4. The next truck I will buy new will more than likely be the Ford F150 STX or FX4 Powerboost (hybrid). I am gonna a Ford make a couple years of them and work out the kinks and or improve on the design. I can see buying one new in 3-4 years. My current F150 will be close to 300,000 miles by then. It will be time for a new truck anyways.
I need to say this one more time. As a car salesman. For a certain car company, I simply appreciate the respect shown to theses vehicles. I have personally “ Dismissed “ 3 people at our dealer because of the abuse they put on brand new vehicles that didn’t belong to us and were brand new trucks. One of them was So bad that I had no choice to make it a “ Company vehicle” because I could not sell that particular truck to a customer. I am in litigation with that person because of the extreme abuse. We are talking about a $57,000 truck.
V6 sound will never be the V8 sound no matter how much extra fake V8 sound they pump into the speakers. I drive them both for work, and prefer the 5.0 V8. Quickness is almost exactly the same, just depends on the day. Now the Limited or the Raptor 3.5L HO engines are like night & day. That engine I like the best. But those trucks are anywhere from $20k to $35k more.
@@paulhunter9613 Definitely faster on the weekends.. LOL Thats the only time when sound counts. If both trucks are running unleaded, the 3.5 is faster by a truck length 0-80. But fill the tank with E-85 in the 5.0 and it's the opposite, the 5.0 will pull the 3.5 by a truck length. But I am at sea level (New Orleans), surely at altitude the 3.5 eco boost will walk the 5.0.
I’m 61 and I tell everyone the 2.7 is the perfect old man’s engine, quiet smooth great torque and easy on gas, the lil engine never seems to be stressed and at McDonalds getting my coffee I can hear the turbos spoiling a lil bit, makes me feel just a tiny bit cool till I drive away and can no longer hear it. Pulls my 5,000 pound camper effortlessly 5 or 6 times a year and on my Super Cab got the 6.5 foot bed, so much more useable than the 5.5. Yes my 23 STX camera sucks and I thought Ford just cheaped out across the entire line, apparently not!😡 my three complaints, no lumbar adjustment, no fog light and now the horrible camera, other than those 3 things love it.
It’s so crazy folks talk about “down the road problems” with turbos. I’ve had three 3.5 EB f150s now and can’t imagine owning a non turbo engine. I don’t know who’s gonna keep the thing to 200,000 miles, but with all the past 5.0 issues in the f150’s, I wouldn’t want to keep it or a 3.5 over 60,000 miles. Longest so far was 28,600 miles lol I love my 21 f150 3.5 and my 22 Powerstroke, but I just don’t think I could go back to a non-turbo engine anymore.
"i don't know who's gonna keep the thing to 200K miles" uhhh, people who don't have money to just keep replacing their vehicle all the time? (especially one as expensive as a truck) but i will say in my experience, most people will find as long as they properly maintain it (oil changes on time, full synthetic oil, air filters replaced when they get dirty, transmission fluid and/or filter changed by the maintenance schedule, etc, etc), be it a 5.0, 3.5, or 2.7, it'll last plenty of time, ford has come a LONG way since the days of the triton 3 valve motors (again, most, obviously every vehicle has a bad production batch every so often, especially when you sell as many vehicles as ford does)
Evan Mclemore Yeah but wouldn’t the folks without money be buying the thing with 100,000+ on it already? if they kept it to 200,000 then for the normal guy that’s like 8 more years. Even if it would blow up and be useless he got his money worth out of it.
I got a 2.7… I ride around town mostly, and don’t tow much, but need a truck still for work. Perfect fit for me. Great gas mileage. I also test drove them all.
I put a SCT chip in mine, average mpg is 22-25 depending on speed. In the city I average 20-21 2019 4x4 supercab. Hold it to the floor and I get 14-16 mpg lol
@@Outlaw-ok7tnmy average is 19.7 mpg for a 2019 XLT 302A Supercrew 4x4 FX4 Ecoboost 3.5 and 3:55 gears. I also live in the mountains so I'm sure that doesn't help. I normally run 87 but switch to 93 when pulling or long road trips. Are you getting that mpg with 87 or 93?
The real battle is between the 5.0 and 2.7. The 5.0 sounds fantastic, but the punch the 2.7 has is addictive. The 3.5 swells with power, but there isn't all that much interesting about it, other than just raw power. On the street, stoplight to stoplight and towing, the 2.7 kicks the 5.0's hiney. The 5.0 though.. it really sounds really, really good. Comparing throttle behavior is like comparing saw blades. The 5.0 is like a fine toothed blade, it makes a nice even cut. The 2.7 is like an 8 lb sledgehammer.
I've personally owned a new f150 from 16-21. All have been 5.0 besides 1 3.5L. I've driven the 2.7L as a loaner. The turbo ones are impressive with power, however the real world fuel economy has been consistently better in the 5.0. That is me driving about 100miles a day 70 is highway.
Everything I see says the Real World MPG on the 2.7 is actually 2MPG less than advertised and the 5.0 is 0.5 MPG better than promised. Which means I will only get the 5.0.
I don’t personally own a truck that has it. But several of the guys I work with have Silverado’s/Tahoe’s with the deactivation and it has caused them to have issues with oil consumption and issues with the lifters. Every single one has oil consumption problems one guy almost had the engine destroyed because so much oil had been lost. I think the cylinder deactivation is something the EPA is pushing vs what vehicle manufacturers want to use. It’s definitely a problematic system that really has zero benefits. I personally love Ford trucks but I couldn’t bring myself to buy one with cylinder deactivation. One more thing if you have an aftermarket exhaust it sounds great with in V8 mode then when it drops to 4 cylinder mode it sounds like a Honda Civic.
@@scrap_metal_magic you're correct about it having no benefit. 1-2mpg gain AT MOST and even then its usually in a controlled environment. Introduces, however, some of the worst problems in modern engines.
Same here. I live in Albuquerque at 5500'. I tow a travel trailer throughout the west with my 2019 F-150 3.5L with the Max Tow package. I have no problem whatsoever going uphill at high altitude.
@@unclebob7937 he is just a five oh guy, I think those guys have to sign something when buying the truck with a five oh that states they have to say something about the turbos failing..😝
Just about To roll over 300,000 miles on my 2013 XLT 5.0 F150 and it still runs like the day I got it new. You can’t beat that V-8 sound and with the Borla exhaust it sounds just like a Mustang!
My 2013 5.0 4x4 just rolled over 270,000 miles. Lots of heavy towing and it's still going. It is showing signs of wear. I have walked off the lot three times in the last years due to the stupid prices of new trucks. Just not going to do that to myself. I absolutely refuse to by a truck that shuts off at a red light or has cylinder deactivation.
Great choice!..I've got the older 2015 Scab XLT Sport w/2.7L & 302B pkg. It's the closest thing to my older 2006 Harley Edition that was a great truck. Shame that collaboration ended.
except that starting in 2021 it has cylinder deactivation technology. like the chevys have been having problems with for years. it's the Bain of their 5.3
You guys crack me up with going for sound. Who cares ! It’s about power and fuel efficiency. 3.5 for the win everyday ! Best combo of everything except the sound which is annoying if you just want power and to listen to podcasts or music.
I never knocked the 3.5. It’s a fantastic engine. For me, I just like the way the 5.0 drives and feels. That’s the beauty of F150’s is the huge choice of engines! By the way, fuel economy is pretty much the same, sometimes even worse in the 3.5 over 5.0 in the real world.
I say the same thing ,I have a 2020 3.5L I don’t care how the 5.0 sounds , I work on big trucks all day when I get in mine ,I don’t want to hear the engine, I love how quiet and refined the 3.5 ecoboost is, I even turned off the fake V8 noise mine made, so aggravating! It got louder in sport mode lol, gone now thanks to forescan.
Right but 5.0 more reliable. Got ‘12 with 150k on it no problems. I’d be on my second set of cam phasers and turbos! 5.0 for me all day long. Oh and 20 mpg average also!
@@arendbehrens2761 There’s really no proof that the 5.0 is more reliable. Especially on the 2015+ models. Just do a quick RU-vid search and you’ll find tons of people with 5.0s breaking down and not so much with the 2.7. - With that said too, I really don’t care for the sound of the 5.0. Some people do, more power to them. But after rolling with an eco boost for a while, when I got in a 5.0 rental I found the engine was screaming trying to do things that my 2.7 did more quietly and efficiently. That actually made me feel like it’s weaker especially when driving through the grapevine (mountains) to LA.
I drive a 21 F-150 with a 2.7 eco and the backup camera doesn’t fog like the one you drive first did. I like the 2.7 and it gets good mileage too, I get 23-24 in mostly highway driving.
Love my 2016 3.5 Ecoboost F150 XLT quad cab 4x4. I’ve got 38,000 miles on it.It runs great and no rattles. Get the 302 a package in the XLT or get the Lariat for a better radio and goodies. I love the power! I pull a 32ft rv trailer . Thanks for the video
If you’re getting a daily driver, get the 2.7. The main reason I am saying this is because of the low end torque. Peak torque (400) comes at 2,750 RPM’s. This means that the truck rarely has to go 3,500 RPMS or higher, compared to the 5.0 which has to much higher lengths to get up to speed.
@@Freakyfetus The turbo 6's were made for fuel economy and towing capability, both of which they do better than the n/a V8. Yes, obviously a turbo v8 will pack more of a punch, but the v6 already packs enough of a punch for a truck while being much cheaper to purchase and cheaper to fuel up. Even the new Tundra is going to be twin turbo 6. That's the times, get used to it!
V8 sound is one thing but massive amounts of low down torque is the most fun you can have in any vehicle. Turbo engines can be easily and inexpensively tuned. The 2.7 is the snappiest of the three as peak torque comes in very low. It can be tuned to make 500+ HP and 500 + Ft Lbs of torque relatively inexpensively. In an aluminum bodied F150 that weighs 4500 lbs. That combination is quite fun and entertaining, ask me how I know. p.s. I also have a 1972 Pontiac which is most likely the loudest road going V8 in the county if sound is what you're into.
Why? My 2013 Ecoboost has never had a problem and I drive the living Hell out of it, including a lot of towing. No gas V8 I've ever owned(first truck was bought in 1993)has been this reliable. Turbos have been around for a very long time.
Thx for the video. I've owned 2 of each of these engines over the last 6 years and they are all good. They are also all quick. 0-60 the 2.7 is the quickest. The 5.0 pulled the hardest up top until these 2021s bumped the 3.5 too 400hp and 500tq. The 3.5 is a monster from 0-100. Reliability and longevity? They put the 3.5 in the Ford GT so that should say something
That means that it can be tuned to put out lots of power, it doesn’t say anything about reliability. I’m a believer in taking care of your vehicle and it will take care of you.
I have the 3.5 I do tow a boat and other trailers, it feels like there is nothing back there when towing. in sport mode its a freaking rocket ship. I door so many wanna be sports cars with it. Eco mode I get awesome gas milage.
Love mine. Just gapped a little ricer Acura a couple days ago. Even after the auto stop had to turn back on, he obviously was trying to race, but those two turbos weren’t having it. I’ve towed up to 11k with it and you can tell it’s back there, but there’s still plenty there. Love it.
the 3.5 gets better gas mileage and has more horsepower and torque, for anyone who tows a camper like me, the 3.5 is the better choice. I don't care about the sound, i prefer performance over how it sounds.
I work hr days and have been saving up a downpayment for a year and I'm still gonna have a big payment ..but I know when I get up at 2am and hop into my f150 IL feel like a million bucks.. pricey but it's worth every penny
Damn dude! I can't believe you only have 9K subscribers. I've personally watched this video maybe a half dozen times because it really gives a good comparison (better than most) of the three engine choices.
had them all and drove them all ..The 5.0 is awsome in my 18 Mustang gt 10 speed but the Ecoboost 3,5 in this truck is quieter smoother Much Faster and way more torque !!! pull a Hellcat on a trailer or a heavy camper and you will wish you got the turbos!!! tows like a diesel !!! 400hp 510tq@3600 .....
I enjoyed your video! Let me preface the following by acknowledging that it all pertains to the 2018-2020 models, so I imagine that it doesn't apply as well to the current 2021 and 2022 trucks. But, with that said... In 2020, I decided it was time to buy my two farm managers new (or close to it) F-150's...and I wanted them to be nice and well optioned, knowing that they would take good care of them. However, I also kept my intentions secret for a year+ (and the pickups off-site) for me to play with, lol. I bought the guys: 2018 SuperCab XLT Sport FX4 4x4 w/3.5 EcoBoost (used with 10K miles) 2018 SuperCab XLT 4x4 w/5.0 (used with 10K miles). And simultaneously, I bought myself a new 2020 SuperCrew Lariat FX4 4x4 w/3.5 and Max Tow package. The two 2018's have the 7,050 lbs. GVW package with 18 inch wheels. The 2020 is 7,000 lbs. with 18 inchers. During that year, and after thousands of "my" miles accumulated on all three trucks, I confirmed my suspicions that I love the tow power/torque and gas mileage virtues of the 3.5 EcoBoost. Just a fantastic engine; it seems to have all of the virtues! As originally planned, in early 2021 I handed off the 2018 3.5 FX4 Sport to my first manager -- and he loves it! However, I also fell in love with the 5.0 SuperCab, trimmed in Blue Jeans and the chrome package. Loved the linear feel of the throttle and great economy too. And then there's that intoxicating sound! I decided to keep it for myself along with my Magnetic 2020 SuperCrew 3.5, lol. I call it my "Mustang". So, now I play with the best of both worlds...turbo six family car SuperCrew and the V8 sports car SuperCab, too. I think on a purely emotional basis, the 5.0 is my favorite. But I totally appreciate the overall technical package and capabilities of the 3.5 EcoBoost. In fact, f I could only keep one, I would likely keep the 3.5. I love its torque for pulling trailers in particular. But, for daily driving, both are just wonderful engines! So, after treating myself to the extravagance of two pickups, I was in the market again for a fourth for my second farm manager (now early 2021). I purchased another low-mileage, immaculate F-150...this one being a 2019 SuperCab STX with the 2.7 EcoBoost and 6,500 GVWR and 20 inch wheels. And well-optioned, for an STX. Now, I'm thinking I might have to keep this 2.7 for myself, too, lol. For just unloaded daily driving, (the vast majority of my own driving) I think this 2.7 is just about the perfect compromise. Feels much like the 3.5 around town, but with significantly better fuel economy. It seems to average in the low twenties, where the 5.0 and 3.5 hover around 19 or so. Plus, I feel that the 2.7 is perhaps the most "refined" of all three engines. It runs with smoothness of a sewing machine. Splitting hairs here, really, but the 3.5 seems just ever so slightly a little less "balanced" in terms of smoothness. With regard to the well-known issues surrounding the 5.0, I have been lucky to have very little oil consumption (I think the previous owner pulled a trailer and broke it in well in the process, as suggested by his stored trailer info in the driver information center), but I'm aware of a thrashy sounding idle outside of the vehicle. Fortunately, the valve train (?) noise is not apparent inside the cab. But I don't like knowing its there. A few other observations... The 10 speed transmission is a real hit-or-miss affair, with the problems not necessarily surfacing in a single test drive. Both of my 3.5's have excellent shifting characteristics. The 5.0 has some harsh shifting around 3rd and 4th gears, and upon entering reverse...I mean really objectionable. I haven't taken it back to the dealer, yet to address that though. The 2.7 had the worst transmission shifting of all. All seemed well on short in-town drives except for occasional low-speed harshness, but kick down for highway passing from 10th to 8th was brutal. Totally unacceptable. I took the truck in to my dealer (who I did not buy the truck from, incidentally) and they made good on it with an updated programming from Ford for no charge. Given the problems people are posting online with finding reliable remedies, I didn't expect much. But, it now shifts perfectly...I'm still "testing" it before I hand it off to my employee, lol, to make sure it lasts. The other thing that surprises me about the STX is just how livable it is. I think it is perhaps a little more smooth and just as quiet as my other trucks, which surprises me given the 20 inch wheel/Hankook tire combo, which I assumed would be inferior to the 17 inch/Michelins and Goodyears on the other three trucks. Also notable is that on all four of these trucks, I immediately disabled the "default to autostop" using Autostop Eliminator modules. And, I invested in RCI skid plate packages, for protective purposes as well as to eliminate the fabric sound deadener stuff which inevitably seems to fail and fall off.
Haha, you hiring? I have a 2015 2.7 and I love it except for the sorry excuse for an exhaust sound. Was kinda offended when the dealer brought it around to test drive. But that quickly went away when I stepped on the gas. I couldn't believe it. I've always had older trucks, mostly 5.7 Chevy's. Loved the square bodies but they weren't necessarily fast. Little 2.7 scoots. I drive in the mountains allot and the turbos love the cold thin air. Fly up the mountain at like 2000 rpms smooth as can be. I don't tow much but it's full of my tools and usually a bed full of lumber and concrete. I fell in love with it. Still don't know what all the buttons do and I just figured out how to remote start it. That's awesome. Only issue is in the ice and you give it more juice than you might have meant to the turbos can bust the tires loose haha. I do miss the V8 sound but whatever.
@@davegordon6943 LOL, my employees might suggest that prying my hands off their company trucks isn't easy. Actually, in 2022 I traded in the blue 5.0 F-150 on a new Expedition Timberline with the H.O. version of the 3.5. Also have a '21 Bronco with the 2.7. I really like the 2.7 and 3.5 Ecoboosts...enough so that I was able to trade in that sweet-sounding 5.0 on one. Funny that you mention the square body GM's. I grew up with those (including a '75 K20 Camper Special my dad purchased new). Now that old girl just sits idle on a corner of our farm acreage. I also still have a '79 Big 10 Trailering Special 454, which decades ago was a daily driver, but sadly, it too just sits now. Back in the day, I celebrated the "last" 454 half tons, thinking we would not see that kind of performance again in a truck when the '80's hit. Now, we have trucks with relatively tiny engines that outperform those big-block trucks in most ways.
I said to myself that I wanted a 5.0 in my first new truck and test drove one and I loved every bit of it. I got my new truck over a year ago 2019 regular cab short bed but with 2.7 Ecoboost and I have to admit while I love the rumble of the 5.0 the 2.7 always manages to put a smile on my face even after 30k miles
There's nothing like a V8 sound. But sadly, it's MPG and power is not the best, but there's people like me who would never tow. Plus I live in Socal, so I'll be driving at sea level all the time.
Having driven and towed a ton with all 3, overall choice of mine would be the 2.7. To me the tow ratings between the 2.7 and the 5.0 should be flipped. The 2.7 has a torque curve that kills the 5.0 and always seems to have the power on tap without having to mat it to the floor and rap the rpms out. It's also the best daily driving motor in my opinion it's fun and quick and also the fastest 0-60 of the 3 however down the line the other 2 are a tad faster. The 3.5 is a great truck as well just seen a lot of timing chain issues with them. The 5.0 is great when you want a good ole v8 sound but also has oil consumption issues. The 2.7 hasn't shown many issues as it was a purpose build engine not just a afterthought. Great review, just my opinion 👍🏻
My gen 3 in my 2018 was eating oil and i was doing oil consumption test once a week for it. The first tsb failed to fix it but the 2nd did 100%. The issue was they were using the wrong dipstick and we're actually over-filling the engine with oil forcing it through the pcv valve and i was burning it. They also remapped the throttle body so that it would stay open longer to prevent such a hard vacuum off full throttle. That issue was fixed and i still prefer my v-8 over an ecoboost. On the highway id be shocked if the 3.5 was faster since the 5.0 traps higher in the 1/4 but has a slower time. From a stop im sure both ecoboost would beat me but im not at all upset about the power. I dont have a mustang in the garage so this is as close to one as i get for a daily driver.
@Adam holland And that’s what most truck owners want, having torque down low in the power band to move things when towing. Not at 4000 rpm like the 5.0
I have a 2018 f-150 4x4 crew cab 2.7 ecoboost, xlt, with the heated front seats, center console. 3.73 rear end, 10-speed, 131,000 miles and no issues at all. Summer I average 22mpg. Winter I average 19 because of idling it 15 minutes before work and driving in 4x4 80% of the time. I always have the auto start stop off. I test drove a 3.5 ecoboost and I was very impressed with it, but it was the max tow package and had e rated tires on it and it was not as comfortable over the bumps has my p rated tires on my 2.7. I like a plush ride now lol. I have raced a 2021 5.3 Chevy and I smoked him, while in sport mode, totally different beast. I tried racing a 2021 ram 1500 6.4 super charged and they wouldn’t do it, all my ecoboost badging is removed lol, they would totally beat me but it was still funny knowing they didn’t know what I had and didn’t want any of it lol. I’m happy with my truck.
The V8 “ sounds good” because the sound is augmented “fake” coming thru the speaker system. That’s the only way to sell a V8 is because it sounds better. The 3.5 eco is stronger and made to pull. Things a real truck needs to do.
A 3rd gen 5.0 is not a bad engine, by far and large. It’s now dual port injected which takes care of the carbon build up on the intake valves. The 5.0 V8 does not come with factory forced induction, and while turbos are cool, you’ve introduced a lot more that can, and will fail. The 3.5 is a good little engine, that Ford has intentionally severely under tuned, while supplying spark plugs that like to crack at the ceramic which unless you know what to look for will have you wondering where in the literal hell that misfire is coming from. The 3.5 is not “stronger”, a 5.0 with any form of forced induction will produce far more power than the 3.5 could ever hope to achieve which is putting them on a more level playing field. They are both made to pull, I truly can not understand your notion. Also, the 5.0 fords don’t have the sound played on the speakers, that’s only done in the 6 cylinder engine line up, because, surprise, the v8 sounds like a v8, which most people like the sound of a v8. A real truck? Really, at that point we really should be looking at trucks that don’t use Fords extremely weak 8.8 inch differential. Any “truck” engine offered today from the big 3, and Toyota, will sufficiently get the job done for a large percentage of users. Real truck? Get any of the 3 quarter to a ton trucks and have a diesel match off.
I stand corrected on the augmented V6 sound but my 2019 3.5 ecoboost is still stronger and quieter than the 5.0 when I pull my 7200 lb toy hauler at high elevation in the Rockies. TFL videos pretty much proved this. And yes it won’t pull like a 3/4 ton diesel. We were watching a video about F 150s, not F 250s.
@@easyrider4x I don't really care if the Ecoboost pulls better, it should with a pair of turbochargers, but I don't like its power delivery, that's why I went with the 5.0L, that and sound.
15,000 miles on my 22 F150 with the 2.7. So far it's the best truck I have ever owned. Never bought a truck that actually gets better mileage than the sticker. High 20s on back roads at 65 mph.
On paper the 3.5 and 5.0 are the quickest. But in every test dragrace the 2.7 wins hands down. Clever marketing to make people buy the more expensive engines! I love my 2.7 2018, along with beating the 3.5 and 5.0 and having the best mpgs on top of it. Not to mention my truck was 6k less!
@@mysterysolver514 wtf I’m talking about is, it would be so powerful and awesome therefore making it illegal. Just as ALL things that are fun and cool are
Today I am getting my first pickup truck. 15K off for the 2020 remaining models and got into a 2.7L ecoboost. Test drove the 2.7L and the 5.0 over the weekend and was shocked by the way 2.7L engine offered! Coming from a paid off 2016 Ford Fusion to this. I am blessed
@@MatthewSmith-uf6tr Marshal Mizo in Chattanooga, TN. This place is awesome brother. They always have crazy deals! I bought the “remaining 2020 models left” - which they marked down 15K from MSRP. I financed the truck at 32K. That’s with a 2K down payment! If you don’t live to far from there, I recommend taking a look!! I think some remaining models have 12K+ off on their new deals
Absolutely love my ‘21 Lariat Sport with the 2.7. Quick SOB with plenty towing power. Great looks and a fantastic interior. Have people commenting on it all the time.
2016 F-150 reg cab 2x2..basic truck..power window/ cruz package..chrome/alloy wheels//2.7 ecoboost.. very happy with it.. good on gas..lots of power..I like it :0)
I trade a 2018 5.0 for a 2021 3.5 Ecoboost and the 3.5 is by far a better engine. The spark nock on the 5.0 is what made me trade it in it sounded like it was a diesel engine.
Yup when there was no v8 i lived without a pick up for a couple years. When i got rid of my raptor no v8 raptor no raptor. Now i have a 5.0 love it. I love the tremor but no v8 no tremor. The new raptor r is more than likley going to be sick priced. So i will stick with my 5.0 for now but i really want a tremor. I have owned 4 ecoboost and i am just not a big fan but the most funny thing is there is no fuel savings. My v8 expedition got the same mpg as the 2.3 eco i had in a car. BS
Haha I agree with you.. that’s why the joke is “eco or boost, not both” because they get horrible mileage when you have a lead foot, but decent if you drive conservative
@@tuppersdad I have owned the 5.0 and 3 3.5 ecoboost. The ecoboost is faster and more fun to drive, especially with the new 10 speed, but gets about the same gas mileage as the 5.0, until you hook a trailer to the back. Then the ecoboost gets terrible gas mileage. If you put a blower on the 5.0 now you have a truck that’s truly fun to drive. If they are both stock though I very much prefer the eco-boost. Just because it’s so much faster. The 2.7 ecoboost is actually faster 0-60 than the 5.0. Some truck channel on RU-vid tested all 3 0-60 and quarter-mile. And the 5.0 came in last every time. I also own a 19 mustang GT with the 5.0 but it’s heavily modified. 930 rwhp and all I changed internally on the engine is the oil pump gears and crank shaft. No doubt the 5.0 is very very well built engine. Especially the gen 3.
