Very good information for people. We service a fleet of Transit T350. They all have the 3.5 turbo. Some are now nearing 300,000 miles. Ford oil filter and a good full synthetic oil, every 3,000 miles. All of fluids every 50,000. Other then spark plugs and coils. The engine have been bullet proof. We do see EVAP systems, purge valve issues along with rear brake slider sticking the calipers.

Awesome explanations...I’ve been running the 3.5L Ecoboost since 2011. I have 240K on that one, still going strong. I loved it so much I bought a 2015 last year ( low miles). I change the oil every 3-4K, no exceptions. I’ve run the 5W-30 synthetic blend it called for since the beginning and I do the same for the 2015. I’m a firm believer in pm’s especially oil changes...probably the cheapest thing you can do for your motor. Ecoboost - lb for lb, best motor I’ve ever run. Towing / efficiency, can’t beat it

Very well spoken and easy to listen to. Everything you say makes sense. I particularly agree with the synthetic oil especially in a highly strung engine. Nothing wrong with changing it before the recommended intervals either. I personally would not have one as they are a lot of tech for a relatively minor gain. The big old low stressed engines will tolerate lax oil changes and non optimals more than one of these and a lot cheaper to fix IMHO. Also less prone to throwing a fault code because a spark plug is not within spec. Having said that, I run a CRDI turbo diesel engine in our Sportage. 115k and no problems yet. Always get it serviced on time or a bit before.

I was prepared for a major Ford bashing. Thank you for an honest video. Preventive maintenance is the key to any mechanical device. Do what the book says, and all will be good. Also glad you hit on economy. People don't realize that for any amount of work, it takes a certain amount of power. Weather V-8 or turbo V-6. Power takes fuel. But most trucks drive around empty. That is where economy is maximized. My 2018 F-150 has gotten 27 MPG on the highway, granted by setting cruise control at the speed limit for the 70 miles . In the same situation, a 5.0 wouldn't get that good of mileage.

Awesome video. I'm a first time at your channel and now a subscriber. I have a 2018 2.7L EcoBoost and absolutely love it. But of course those turbos are always in the back of my mind. So love the video when talking about how to care for and also how and when to maintenance the vehicle. I'll keep my oil changes at 5 to 6 thousand miles and be sure give my waste gates the exercise they need. Lol. Please do a 2nd gen 2.7L EcoBoost review or a comparison of the 1st and 2nd gen 2.7L EcoBoost and your thoughts on the GDI block and dual port and direct injection system. Keep up the good work!!

Dustin, Wow! You did an excellent job on detail and explained everything with perfect clarity! You are a rare breed, (especially for the grease monkey industry) thank you for all that you do! Keep up the good work! Sidenote: You have made my decision to go with an '18 or newer Explorer now that you added that note on the two-timing chain tensioner change that year, that's was awesome inside info. most would never know!

Fantastic video, great education - thank you. I run full-synthetic in my engine and swap oil/filter every 6,000 miles, I am currently at just a little over 90,000 miles and everything seems to be running good.

The trouble is in our job , customers have not been brought up with modern technology, they don't understand that you will wreck your engine if you don't service it , they always want to skimp on repairs , would rather have their hair done or new nails , then cry when it's gonna cost a packet to fix , we as motor vehicle repairers , have not yet joined the magic circle so have no magic wand to fix it , great video , fully agree , same shit over here in the UK , in Jaguar engines

It doesn’t help that the manufacturers have stretched the recommended maintenance intervals in the name of selling “lower cost of maintenance” to the buyer. Case in point...Nearly every automaker that uses the ZF 8HP transmission says it’s “fill for life” while ZF explicitly recommends changing the fluid at 8yr/100000km.

In the last 100 years or so, what car/engine hasn't begun to fail without proper maintenance? Sloppy maintenance (especially of the engine) is like giving bad luck a disproportionate chance to wreck things while giving the owner absolutely nothing to gain from not servicing the vehicle properly. Some engine type with certain usage patterns might last for some time despite lax maintenance but I don't even see the point of comparing the durability of different engines without the assumption that all engines are first and foremost properly maintained.

It's a good thing people don't do the recommended maintenance, I mean how much business would be lost if everyone maintained their vehicle to spec.

Great video! I am so tired of hearing about timing chain stretch on these engines, it is as you say, timing chain wear from lack of maint. You have a very good explanation of that issue.

Great informational video- correct it is imperative to change the oil and filter every 5-6K with only full synthetic. My 2012 F-150 ECO now has 253K and aside from a current MAF issue (needs to be properly spray cleaned) the truck runs great. Another tip my mechanic advised especially on the older 1st generation ECOs is when operating for extended trips is to allow the engine to idle 2-3 minutes allowing the fluids to circulate through the turbos before turning off. Anything to extend the life of the ECO is important. Don't forget the transmission flush which along with the radiator which I do at the dealer at least every 40K after I hit 100K. Small price of preventive maintenance to possibly avoiding large repair bills if you plan to drive over well over 100K.

Having had diesels in the past, if driving on the highway, especially towing hills, I'd let the truck run until exhaust temps lowered to 300 degrees, so says the pyrometer. Of course their is no pyrometer on these F150's (of which mine is a 3.5 as well, and running fine at 130k+ miles) and although I don't tow, if I've run it a little harder than normal, I'll wait 30 seconds before shutting down. I am one of the one's that drives for fuel mileage, so every now and again, have to remember to allow the turbo's to incorporate some power...but I don't often, as I want to remain above 18 mpg around town if at all possible, which it can do if I drive it sensibly. I just bought a case of Motorcraft semi-synthetic (as per the manual states for oil changes) but I do change right at 5,000 miles or prior to. I'll switch over to Penzoil Platinum full synthetic once my Motorcraft is gone.
