The GMC Canyon has received a small update for the 2021 model year, along with the new All Terrain 4 trim. We're driving this 2021 GMC Canyon AT4.
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/...
We've done a lot of pickup trucks on TestDrive over the course of our show, including all 4 of the major full-size American truck brands, but we've yet to feature any of the mid-size pickup trucks offered here in North America. The 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 is a new trim for this model year, and features a slight facelift to bring the look and design inline with other vehicles in GMCs lineup, including an updated front grille and lower fascia, vertical LED fog lamps, and an updated tailgate with the 'CANYON' badge along the centre rather than to one side.
Our AT4 package also comes with a number of off-road oriented features including 31" Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires on 17" rims, an Eaton G80 rear locking differential, a transfer case skid plate, an off-road tuned suspension with an advanced hill descent control mode, and a unique grille colour along with lower front red recovery hooks. This new AT4 trim competes directly with the Ford Ranger FX4, but we don't feel it takes it to the same level as the 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor.
Our full tour and review covers a number of topics buyers of a mid-size pickup truck would be interested in, including the MSRP and as-tested price for this GMC Canyon, the differences between this and an entry-level 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4, and what sort of Sierra 1500 you could buy for about the same price as this. We discuss the truck's payload and towing capabilities along with the GVWR of 6,000 lbs, and how this 3.6L direct injection V6 engine compares to the competition, and how the 2.8L Duramax diesel improves towing.
We then take the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 on a comprehensive real-world road test to talk about how this truck performs, handles, and drives on the road, and what stands out about it. We go over the interior design and layout, and how this truck compares to the previous generation Sierra 1500. We report our real-world fuel economy test results along with our opinion on living with this truck for a week.

I bought my son a 2017 GMC Canyon SLE. It was a great truck. We drove it all over. Drove really good. Hauled a small uhaul from Georgia to New Mexico to move my daughter to grad school. Loved that truck. The Sunday before Thanksgiving 2020, someone ran a red light and hit his truck. It was totaled. I found a great 2019 GMC Canyon SLE with 16000 miles on it. It is also a great truck. I like the Canyon so much that I worked hard to find something similar to what he had. I've driven full size trucks, Toyota Tacomas and 4 Runners. The Canyon drives so much better than all those trucks to me.

Great review! You're basically reviewing the truck I ordered, but without the bed liner and with the Bose system. Even if there was a full-sized pickup in my price range with the extras I want, I'm really happy to be getting this one instead. Not just from a size standpoint, but BECAUSE it's a bit behind on automation and other tech. Push start, electric emergency brake, pushbutton shifting, climate controls only on a screen, collision mitigation crap, blindspot sensors, LED headlights that blind everyone sitting lower than you are, auto start-stop: all stuff that I'm more than happy to do without. I'd probably have taken it without the camera if I had the choice, although I'll admit I'm interested in seeing how it is hooking up a trailer... Cannot wait until it shows up.

I am thinking of a 21 or 22 canyon when my colorado lease is up. I prefer the 6' bed. Anyway, it's my understanding that the canyon is smoother, quieter and has a better turning radius than the colorado. That, and better interior.

Midsize trucks are not that much smaller than their full sized "half ton" brethren. They are mainly narrower, which actually results in them being less work practical as the beds aren't wide enough for 4x8 building materials, resulting in the need for a rack or trailer. Midsize trucks are actually designed for the people who want an suv with a bed, someone like me who will use the bed for a toolbox, some home depot runs every now and then and for large grocery runs. Also the engines greatly differ from their half ton counterparts, with emphasis on fuel economy over anything else. GM uses their 3.6 v6, which was designed for crossovers and light performance (zr2 and camaro) with an extremely high rev range with high hp figures. This is far from ideal for a true truck engine as you want as much torque as low as possible, which is why low revving V8s are the go to in half tons. Also when it comes to capability, while the payloads may not be much different, a full size will tow much more than a midsize, and a Sierra will handle a family of 5 and a camper way better than a canyon will. And one specific note about the colorado/canyon is that these trucks are from 2012 in design and have no plans for a redesign, I thought the ram 500 was going to come in the midsize market and force redesigns from toyota, gm and Ford, but instead we got the pos that is the gladiator and has a worse interior than either of these, so onward to no foreseeable innovation in the midsize market. And for 2023 gm is switching over completely to the 2.7 turbo for the midsize trucks, finally putting the 2.8 duramax into retirement. The arguably best feature of this truck is just getting canned instead of updated (the diesel)
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 года назад
The diesel on this seems like it makes the most sense, I was surprised that GM Canada configured this one without it, but what can ya do. I spotted a few of these 2021s so far this week, people are definitely buying them but it could use a proper refresh. I was hoping to do a video comparing it with the Ranger but our dealer only had one, while pricing was similar it was still a 2020 with the Sport trim, not even the FX4.
@zachrandolph7845
@zachrandolph7845 3 года назад
@@PRNTestDrive why do you think the diesel is the best engine choice diesel other than getting more towing do you get more horsepower and torque?

I disagree with tbe first part....I have a 2006 ranger....obviously smaller than this this truck....im an electrician and the ranger offers more than enough bed space for my needs. I also just finished building a 10x20 shed in my backyard from the ground up I was able to fit all the material in my truck studs, plywood, roofing material, drywall, etc...so a midsize truck now a day has more than enough room to work out of

Parked next to my old '98 F150, the Canyon is almost the same size, just a bit narrower. The new 1/2 tons are massive! I'm a general contractor with a 2012 f150 and I'm considering a midsize for my next truck. The 1/2 tons are getting too big and I have a good size trailer that a midsize can tow without issue

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 года назад
No difference in terms of tech or overall specifications, mostly just the design/look and price, as GMC tends to be a bit more than the Chevy. Only major difference I can tell is the Colorado’s ZR2 off-road package is much more capable than this AT4.

I am not a real truck guy, but have a home and take stuff to dumpster and make trips to Home Depot where I buy landscaping stuff for home that otherwise get my 2011 Grand Cherokee interior dirty. So what I am saying is I need something like this. I checked every midsize truck and was disappointed by interiors as I am getting a midsizer for my wife. Tacoma is weird seating position if you are tall or short. GMs are plasticky interior and Ranger ride seemed really not good on highway. We ended up with a 2019 Ridgeline. My point, American truck makers need to give some of those luxury interior themes to their midsizers. There is a market for that but I guess they think it may steal sales from big boys. We are really happy with our all wheel drive Ridgeline and she likes the interior which is very nice and full of leather and premium plastics. I can never convince her to ride in something so plasticky as interior of this GMC. That shift lever reminds me of a 1990 Beretta 🤣
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 года назад
At least if the Denali trim offered a bit more premium materials that would be a good trade off. The 2021 Denali does have some wood trim inlays and a bit more leather but overall it's basically the same plastic slab as this.
@james2042
@james2042 3 года назад
Ram was supposed to drop a half ton that would have ram 1500 levels of interior quality, which would of forced major redesigns from gm and Ford, but instead they went and dropped the abomination that is the gladiator, allowing the 8 and 9 year old midsize trucks to soldier on (both midsize trucks were new in Australia almost a decade ago and brought here over time)

I purchased a new truck 3 weeks ago, when i was looking I was looking at the mid sized truck and i will say from he outside, the Canyon is the best looking truck, Sierra also; however, i passed on GMC and Chevrolet because i found the felt very plastic on the inside while also being very dated on the inside and having a physical key was a hard pass, even my motorcycle is keyless and i prefer just the FOB . I looked at both the Canyon and Sierra Denali and again, both dated interior along with so plastic feeling. I also looked at the RAM and while a nice truck, i ended up getting a new Ford F150 King Ranch. Fits in my garage and a beautiful interior and exterior.
