Andra Day's & Jodie Foster's wins have to be the most unexpected wins in modern Globes history right, in terms of the acting categories? At least statistically speaking on Goldderby. Only 40 out of 4574 people had Andra Day winning, that's 0.9%! And for Jodie Foster it's 47 out of 4512 people, only 1.0%. Someone winning with 10% of the people predicting it is already a huge upset, 1% is unheard of as far as I know. What a crazy year
Andra Day is super deserving though. My top 4 actress currently are Kirby, Day, McDormand & Davis. Since Kirby's beautifully restraint and naunced performance has no chance winning the Oscar then I hope Andra Day wins. She breathes the character inside and out. An utterly stunning turn for a film debut!
Now that Andra Day has won the Golden Globe but won't be in contention for SAG or BAFTA, I can see a world where Frances McDormand wins Critic's Choice, Viola Davis wins SAG, Carey Mulligan wins BAFTA, and then it's a toss-up for the Oscars! Btw, 1:58 😹
@@encheknizam I just remembered that Glenn lost to Jodie back in 1990 when Glenn was nominated for Dangerous Liaisons. God Glenn is such a legend how did she loose for that role?
Im not gonna lie supporting actress rlly confused me bc of course everyone thought that it was between Seyfried, Close and Coleman but even then i would have thought Zengel more likely to win over Foster wow Even Jodie didnt expect it lol
There is a world where none of the GG actresses winners (Pike, Foster, Day) gets an Oscar NOMINATION. I mean, Day is probably safe by now, but this could potentially still happen lol
I’m not ready to call picture a lock. The front runner just doesn’t win at the Oscars. It hasn’t happened since 12 years a slave. Watch the PGA do something weird and go Trial or PYW and then one of those becomes very live to win BP. We have a long way to go my friend
Birdman won almost nothing but won Best Picture. Shape of Water won almost nothing but won best picture. Spotlight won almost nothing but won Best Picture. Trial still has a great chance at winning. If Trial wins SAG ensemble and PGA then it will probably win best picture. Nomadland is gonna win at the critics choice and Bafta.
The difference is Olivia was actually the front runner the entire time she actually won more awards than Glenn close but glen won the the most at the industry awards bc everyone was wrapped up in the “she’s long overdue it’s her time” buzz
Those are the two I would most like to see win. Mcdormand not impossible but unfortunately Riz would need a hail mary from his own endzone. I love how subtle he was. So many actors would have overplayed that role. I think hes being overlooked but cant argue against the other frontrunners
@@TheTomale I’m biased. I write music with Andra, I’ve known her for 10 years now. She’s my biggest supporter in my own life. I can wholeheartedly say, as a film buff, she gave thee best performance of the year. No knocking anyone else, and I’m not saying her film is perfect. She just worked the hardest. She lived as Billie Holiday from the end of 2017 through the end of 2020. Dialect coaching w Thom Jones and acting classes with Tasha Smith most days of the week on top of writing her new album every day in the studio. She lost 40 lbs for the role, she picked up smoking, she’d never had a cigarette in her life, she started drinking, she has none of these vices. She’s been celibate for 10 years but you couldn’t tell by the sex scenes lol I did not recognize my sister up on my screen until she broke character under Lee’s direction in the end credits while singing ‘All of Me’ she let one one little whimper as she sang, Lee wanted her to let Billie go and let Andra in but she plain didn’t want to and she’s still going through the motions of shaking the character. I truly think she acquired Billie Holidays essence on loan to do this performance. There isn’t a false note on her part, and she truly gave the performance of the year if people can see past a film that’s not perfect but it isn’t the dumpster fire that film Elitists and critics say it is. Even those people say she SLAYED! Not to mention Peter Travers, Richard Roeper, Michael Musto gave the film high marks. I see it as a hang up with people’s dislike of Lee Daniels more than the merits of the film itself. Thrown in with a little subtle prejudice. Judy is not that much better a film if at all than Us v Billie, and Renee was not better than Andra but critics gave that and Renee the benefit of the doubt. Andra should win. She put the work, the talent is on full display. Man up Oscars. Oscars so white needs to add some flavor to the recipe.
Also, even though they‘re really co-leads, the fact that LaKeith Stanfield has a few minutes more screentime than Kaluuya lessens a bit of the category fraud.
@@arontamas5639 I would have never called that movie a dark comedy... Surprisingly enough upon googling the term "dark comedy" I care a lot is the first movie that pops up... It bugs me a bit because I really felt like that movie was such a downer and I felt so bad during the first half of the movie.... Kajillionaire is a dark comedy, I Care a Lot is a movie about shitty people that isn't funny in the least!
It’s moments like 5:45 - 6:04 is why I love this channel. I literally had the same reaction when Day won and to see that moment crystallized in this video is amazing and hilarious 😂
Unpopular opinion: I was actually very happy Andra Day won. Billie Holiday wasn't a good movie but Day kept me invested throughout. McDormand was my number one choice but still a deserving win
Unpopular just amongst film Twitter. Every negative review for Billie still highlighted how stellar Andra Day was. Audience reception for the film and Andra Day is great on Twitter and RT. The film’s quality fluctuates (mainly editing) but the lynching scene into Andra performing ‘Strange Fruit’ GRIPPING.
@@jesusdelgadillo8428 I imagine film twitter would have been upset by anyone beating Carrey Mulligan and promising young woman. I try to stay away from film twitter, a lot of my opinions are opposite of what they all want
Too bad McDormand’s recent Best Actress win puts many off from voting for her. On top of that, she’s a producer on _Nomadland,_ so she’d get her 3rd career Oscar anyway if it wins Best Picture.
@@Wired4Life2 Yeah I figure Mulligan will still win the oscar. I'm one of the few people who didn't like promising young woman but I can admit that she was great and I'd be ok if she won, she's overdue
Jodie Fosters win can be justified as the globes not liking Hilbilly Eligy enough, Not respecting Seyfried, and thinking that Colman has already won enough. Foster is universally respected and hasn’t won in decades. But Andra Day, I don’t know how that happened.
Andra could upset if she keeps this campaign up. But no sag..or bafta... so i think viola or frances will win sag. And bafta...watch it be a random British woman
After the two actress categories I said to myself during the actress drama categories, “Andra Day will probably win at this point”. I was kidding... KIDDING.
It’s basically like you’re discrediting Andra’s performance. I get it, she was a surprise, but why can’t we celebrate her win? Especially as the first black woman to win in 35 years, but I digress.
@@UltimateBrody Oh no, I liked her a lot in the movie, I was just super surprised seeing as she was the fifth on my predictions. I just said that because now I’m super confused for the Oscars.
WTF, Jodie Foster for best supporting actress? Andra day for best actress drama? Why? I’m not saying they weren’t good, they were but the other nominees deserved more
Andra Day is the first black woman to win lead actress in 35 years since Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple. She deserved her win 100% she’s going to upset at the Oscars too.
@@jesusdelgadillo8428 since when is this a race ceremony ? they are awarding acting not race. she was good but they barely put her on 5th spot so that's saying something. even if u think her acting was better why u gotta bring her race up..
@@jesusdelgadillo8428 I get you want to see Andra win but she simply isn't the best though. The fifth slot was basically a blank space that couldve been filled by anyone. Frances or Carey maybe even Viola will take the win
Let’s be honest: did anyone actually predict Day and Foster to win? I was in shock with both decisions. Also, Bakalova is probably not getting nominated at the Oscars after this
What I don’t get is , if they were trying to avoid controversy about the non black member situation .Why didn’t they just give to Viola who’s also black , instead of Andra day .Her performance in ma Rainey was great 💯
I mean look at what kind of year 2020 was. Of course Award season was going to follow suit with being as unpredictable as possible because it wanted to keep us on our toes too!! 😜
Its gonna be an interesting year... I mean i love the fact that every award show has different winner and its unpredictable just to spice things up ... But now we know that its gonna be carey mulligan vs frances mcdormand
This was the worst Golden Globes I’ve ever seen. I usually enjoy these award shows but Zoom does not make for good television. It’s disappointing because these entertainers make millions through creativity yet they can’t make Zoom somewhat fun?
People are acting like Carey Mulligan’s chances are done when they’re not. She’s nominated for the SAG when Andra isn’t and she’s on the short list for the BAFTA and Andra isn’t. It’s still totally wide open.
It’s the entitlement of Carey Mulligan being the only person who deserves to win for me. It’s crazy that we can’t celebrate an incredible performance from Andra Day without complaining about Carey losing. Black women have been losing for 35 years in that category, even with arguably superior performances to their white counterparts. But the world is on fire now because a melinated goddess won. Whatever.
I'm SO confused with the actress race now, I feel like anything can happen, I just hope the Oscars don't snub Kirby, i feel like She's not getting the love she deserves
I think the bafta will go to Colman and SAG will go to Close, Yuh-Jung might get the critics choice. and if Foster gets an Oscar nomination this would be the most exciting Oscar race in years.
I know it's not super logical but my gut is screaming a late sound of metal run if it gets best picture nommed especially if it grabs screenplay, I feel like it's the type of movie that benefits from a runoff ballot since nomadland doesn't have as rave of reviews that Parasite and even Roma did who still lost. It def could be some bias but I feel like there's a chance that it could be a thing.
My best guess for Andra Day is that the Globes love musicals, and playing the character she did helped get the votes. I don’t think she’ll win anywhere else, but this greatly helps her to get in at least.
Have you seen the movie? Andra was the ONLY incredible thing about it. She carried it on her back, which made her stand out more. Did you see the lynching scene going into Strange Fruit? We’re numb to things like that now? It’s like people don’t want to give Andra her credit for giving one hell of a debut performance because somehow Carey Mulligan is entitled to win everything and nobody else should dare compete. So over it.
I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve it, it was just unexpected since nobody was predicting her for the win. It’s tough to win when your flawed movie holds you back. The award bodies have been leaning in other directions for Actress wins, and it’s just crazy that the Globes would do something incredibly against the grain like this. I’ve been predicting her for the Oscar nomination before the win last night, but the Globes win was just unexpected
Hasn't the winner of supporting actress at the Globes always been at least nominated at the Oscars for an extremely long time? Is Foster just in, at least from a statistical standpoint?
I see some other people with the same sentiment as me, which is I’m kind of glad that the two actress categories blew up like this lol. I feel like it makes the race much more interesting when it isn’t a sweep.
The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro if they had watched in 2011: “Oh my God Fincher won!!” “Fincher won!!” “Yes that’s it! He’s going to the Oscar!!” “IT’S GOING TO WIN EVERYWHERE!!!” Way too reactionary
I’m calling it Jodie won globe Amanda wins at Bafta Olivia sag Zendaya critics choice Close Oscar Lead actress Andra globe Sag Vanessa Critic choice viola Bafta Carrey Oscar Frances Indie spirit Sydney flannigan
both carey mulligan and amanda seyfried getting robbed doesn't sit well with me, I guess we'll just have to wait for the other ceremonies to see what happens. This might be a 1917/once upon a time thing like when the golden globes gave them everything and parasite won big at the oscars.
Rosamund Pike was excellent in I Care A Lot. She made the movie incredibly unsettling to watch, and nailed it everytime she was onscreen. Her performance is bringing awareness to what’s happening in society and loopholes in US judicial system similar to Britney Spears being stripped off her rights. It’s happening to young and old. Hope she gets the Oscar Nod. 👏🏼 My dream actress nominee would be Frances , Carey Mulligan, Vanessa Kirby, Voila Davis and Rosamund Pike. Tho, Andra Day looks great in promos, haven’t seen the movie yet she actually might get the nod.
Do you think because the movie I care a lot and United States vs Billie Holiday came out in the past 2-3 weeks on Netflix and Hulu that is one of the reasons why both actresses won their respected categories?
I was thrilled by the surprise wins, especially days. I love the competition and we have the most competitive race since 2002 with Kidman, Zwellweger, Hayak, Moore, and Lane. I predict Davis, Day, Mulligan, McDormand, and Kirby. Maybe Zendya can replace Kirby. Pike has no nominees at the Guilds.
What makes this so special (and why it wasn't predicted by anybody): This is the first time, that all three actress winners aren't even nominated for an Screen Actor Award! The only case, which was partly similar, was 2005 with Clive Owen and Natalie Portman both winning at the Globes for Closer but weren't nominated for Screen Actor. But even these two were predicted by some pundits, because the film itself was highly beloved by the HFPA.
Rosamund clearly won because I Care A Lot has been the big movie on stream and socia media the past week. I’m still calling Mulligan for the Oscar tho. Edit. I was wrong for best picture I thought for sure it was going to Mank
I’m thinking of ending things and Judas and the black messiah are the 2 best films I’ve seen this whole year and I really hope both of tide get more awards because each department except for the camera operator in I’m thinking of ending things because you see the camera in the reflection of a window which is really a shame but kinda works as a fourth wall break.
Andra Day is a once in a generation type of artist! Wait till you guys see her projects with Michael Mann, her stage work that’s incoming, her second album coming this June, she’s pulling a Marion Cotillard at the Oscars and winning Best Actress. She gave the best performance of the year regardless of the films fluctuating quality.
Thank you! I feel like the reaction to her win is very micro aggressive and borderline racist. Suggesting that the HFPA only gave it to her because of the controversy over a lack of black members also suggests that Andra didn’t give the performance of her life, living and breathing Billie Holiday for three years. Carey Mulligan is not entitled to win anything; neither were any of the other four. It’s been 35 years of all white women winning, and the first time a black woman wins... suddenly it’s because they feel sorry for her? Ok. Let’s just throw away every bit of literal blood, sweat and tears Andra gave. It makes me sick how they’re treating her.
@@UltimateBrody I just got called racist haha I’m Mexican Belizean, grandma is black. I’m sticking up for Andra Day. She is worthy of the Oscar. It’s best performance by an actress not best film or best editing. They will cry at the top of their lungs over her win that the film is soooooo poorly made when it’s not the discussion at hand. What a privilege for like a Sandra Bullock to not be publicly degraded or diminished because she Won.
I’m there with you, brother. I’ve seen your posts and I agree with every single one of them. They’re all just mad because Andra wasn’t in their conversations, but she was in OURS and obviously many members of the HFPA. The movie wasn’t great, but Andra gave the performance of her life, which carried the movie on her back. Every time she was on screen, it was like magic. She took the essence of Billie and transformed. I’m not letting these racist, micro aggressive people ruin a beautiful moment we’ve been waiting 35 years to see. And it’s not out of pity, it’s because she was FANTASTIC! No one is entitled to anything, but the white privilege shows when people claim that the award was stolen from Carey. I’m sure there will be 35 more years of Carey Mulligans sweeping awards. Get over it.
Really excited for the future of the acting categories this season, especially considering how Andra Day is a fifth-slot contender and how Jodie Foster doesn't stand a chance in possibly getting nominated in an already stacked category.
I really think Minari will be Nomadland's competition from here on out. The movie is gaining traction, and remember - last year The Globes didn't nominate "Parasite" for Best Drama and it still went on to win Best Picture. I'm predicting the same upset for Nomadland and Minari. I think Minari from here on out will be placed among the Best Picture nominees and will end up winning Best Picture at the Oscars.
Parasite won best foreign language film at the Globes, and it should be pointed lout that it wasn’t eligible for picture categories. Technically Minari is on a similar path.
It could very well be second place, but I still doubt it’s chance of winning. The more accessible film organizations like the Globes, who went for 1917 last year, are behind Nomadland this year. The more serious film critics, who went for Parasite last year, are also behind Nomadland. Minari would need at least one of these crowds to be a serious front-runner. Really, it looks like there’s absolutely no reason to doubt Nomadland.
Trial can pull a Birdman, where Boyhood won everywhere except Screen Actors and Producers Guild but Birdman won best picture. Shape of Water won Critics choice and Producers guild but lost everything else and won best picture. Spotlight also lost most places but won best picture.
