In today's video I ride another new Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin from Freeman Motorcycles, this time the DCT model. This video is purely looking at the Africa Twin from the standpoint of "is DCT any good?". If you've watched the channel a while you'll know I'm not a huge fan of it, does this new revision to Honda's DCT system win me over? Would I recommend an Africa Twin with DCT? Answers to all these questions are in the video. I could type them but yano....that'd ruin the point of making a video :D
If you enjoyed the video please hit the like button, it pleases the gods of RU-vid and then let my videos do well :D Also if you're new here please consider hitting that subscribe button for more bike related content :)
Thanks for watching!

At minimum the DCT system is a bloody impressive piece of engineering....I'm an engineer so I appreciate it :D After watching this video would you consider even test riding a DCT, leave your opinions at the door and try one? I would have been fine never riding a DCT bike again, but I'm glad I did in the end :) Give Freeman Motorcycles a shout if you want to buy this one or the manual one :) Both great bikes!

I was given an Africa Twin 2020 with DCT as a courtesy bike as mine was totaled It took me 5 minutes to get used to the DCT And i like riding gently in low rpm so the bike was in 5th gear at 30 miles/hour And use engine brake all the time But engine braking at low speed is problematic On this bike using the front brake give me a lot more engine braking and intermittent as well at below 15 miles/hour for my braking pattern in the 10 days i had the bike i did not get used to this

You need a half dozen rides to truly understand all the benifits of DCT. When you are coming up to a corner, even in auto you can shift down a gear with manual hand shifter, or up coming out if you like. There are three sport modes that are easily gained, to give you the "spirited" ride you are wanting. My bud was a Baja racer, another a motocross racer and myself Enduro. We all bought DCT and love it. We ride Mountain gravel and two track with 50-50 tires. You get both auto rides and manual with flick of a toggle switch. In traffic, no clutching. On long tours just relax in "Tour mode" chug along and Check out the Rocky Mountains. 10000 km and absolutely love it. I've got 480 km out of a tank with fuel remaining. Try the ES version. If you like DCT, you'll love electronic suspension even more! I absolutely love my 2020 ATASes. Thanks for the review, you just need more seat time off road with this bike in gravel, or dirt mode. You'll really like it. Cheers, 🇨🇦

That's fair, I'd say you need a fair distance to fully gauge any tech. Sadly first impressions videos is all I'll ever likely get to make! Yeah I understand that, but I don't like the hand shifters much to be honest, if I was going to have to change it myself I'd rather a foot shifter. Yeah the modes are very handy, all modern bikes and their modes are very good, I usually end up just leaving it in the least intrusive mode :) 480km is insane! How many litres! :O I have ridden the previous model ES, I much prefer the lighter model, the ES is great but too heavy for my liking. I usually go for smaller more nimble bikes. I love the bike, but I'd have the manual over the DCT still :) I'd absolutely love to take one off road though, either gearbox! :) Thanks!

Had my DCT for two weeks haven’t driven a bike for 40 years it was on the dealer floor never drove it. I am 75 so the automatic was super helpful to get back into biking I can shift but really enjoy just driving and not worrying about what gear to be an absolutely love it after two weeks. It has adopted my driving slowly on back roads doesn’t go into six gear right away.peace

I've just bought a 2021 AT dct base model. I rode a few ADV bikes, but instantly fell for the dct! Personally I like to blip on a down shift! It was a very difficult decision to make, but the dct won! It's so easy and effortless! I've never done any green laning b4. Some prefer manual, some prefer dct, it's all about your own preference and what the bike is used for!

I was looking for a bike that would do everything as in commuting,touring and some off road. In 2018 I had put my money down for a Tiger 800, I was dead against the DCT but after a impromptu test ride I just fell in love with it. Mine is the 2018 DCT and some 35k kms later absolutely in love with it. The latest gear box that you have tested is even better since it has a 6 axis imu it enables the DCT to know when you are leaning into a corner so it holds gears. I use the Urban mode for everyday commute considering the traffic and roads in my nick of the woods (india). Off road depending on the terrain I engage the G mode and run the gravel mode, have not faced any issues. More technical trails will require precise input since there is no way to kill the power to the rear, the rear brake is what's used. That will come in time super easy to ride about, and considering its a 1000 cc it generates next to nothing in terms of heat. Absolutely love this bike won't be swapping it out for another 5 to 10 years easy :)
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
I'm still not in love with it and wouldn't personally buy a DCT bike, yet, but it's a bloody brilliant tech now :) The fact it is linked to the 6 axis IMU is why I tried it tbh, the 2014 version I had tried gave me a scare and I didn't trust them at all. Glad you found a bike you properly love anyway, best of luck with it :)

@TheGorillaBiker Honda actually does offer a foot lever shifter for the DCT (08U70-MKS-E50) but it's a bit expensive and seems like a pain to install. It really just duplicates the paddle shifter function down at your foot, but if that's easier for you, it makes total sense.

I'm waiting on a manual Africa Twin Adventure Sports now (actually waiting on spring for less snow and ice so I can pick it up). Went with manual because it's what I'm familiar with for off-road riding, and I don't want to mix it up with riding some manual bikes and a DCT off-road; I'm not smart enough to manage that. But for me, if I did have a DCT, the manual mode would be for controlling gears off-road, where a change at the wrong time will cause you to lose your power and momentum up a difficult climb.

Ah nice! Congrats on the bike :) I just think that DCT isn't as fun overall and at an extra 1000 or so to buy I really can't see any reason I'd ever go for one. Unless I badly injured my left side or something. Yeah that's a good point, that I can see it'd be useful for.

Thank you for two good videos of AF manual and DCT. Using manual mode in cars with auto boxes can be meningful in some models. Take fx. Mercedes C63 6,2 V8. It is a true joy to be exactly in the right gear and feel the throttle respons that a naturally asperated engine gives you. Super fast when hitting exactly the right revs. Also the engine breaking is immense with the big displacement motor. Something you can't feel when in auto. Sorry for the long read and not even about bikes! Again thank you for your content. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

While I really appreciate the engineering a bike gives me a more visceral feeling than a car. Your out in the open and for me a huge part of that feeling is being responsible for what the bike is doing if that makes sense. So shifting gears is a huge part of that. I'm lucky enough to live near some great biking roads and to my mind the dct would take away some of the joy of biking. Great review of both bikes👍

@@TheGorillaBiker just your "I prefer manual" when manual is already there. Not aggressive at all, just be fair to the bike, it already offers what you asked for, like complaining about a car with paddle shifting at it's steering wheel because it doesn't have a gear stick Sir.

@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
I do prefer manual. In the classic sense, with a clutch and my foot. If you want to argue semantics you can but it was very clear what I meant in the video. At no point did I denigrate the technology for the sake of it. It's good tech, I just prefer changing gears with my foot and a clutch. Changing gears by pressing a button also isn't manual technically. It's semi auto. Also....saying you prefer a gear stick over paddle shift is a completly legitimate preference and statement to make. You came across very aggressive bud. Read your very first sentence. I have no issue debating opposing points of view with someone who approaches it in a reasonable manner. I'm no Sir.

Good on ya for trying the DCT. I've heard people talk down about DCT but that's just wrong thinking. It's another technology. Do automatic cars make it easier for most people to drive them? Yes, maybe too easy. Will solid DCT bring more people to motorcycling? I don't know but I hope so. I have spoken with people that don't want to bother to learn shifting on a motorcycle and that's okay. I prefer manual on my cars and motorcycles, but I only prefer that as long as I can keep doing it well. Some day I may not be so well suited to shifting as I ride or drive, and then I'll look to DCT or automatic cars. I think it's also important to look at it and understand it so you know how it works and you won't potentially get left in the dust. Of course when EVs come we won't have to worry about transmission shifting and we'll all be just twist and go so let's celebrate what we have now and enjoy it.

I hope DCT does bring motorcycling to more people and honestly after using this version I'm now happy that it won't put people in bad spots like the old version, will it make it easier for people to ride the bike? Yes. Is that a bad thing once it's doing it's job correctly and safely? No. That's it really, you have to be aware of advancements even if you don't want them, I'm still hoping synthetic fuel takes off tbh :P

I'm telling you, test ride a Dct if you can, I still wouldn't buy one over a manual bike, I like manual bikes it's part of the experience for me, but it's impressive technology :) Ah cars are ruined here for me tbh. Very expensive to even own nice fast ones so I'll just stick to my bikes :)

Like you I have always been a sceptic. If, heaven forbid, I was to buy a Wing then yes it makes perfect sense. But to pay more money for the machine to do something I enjoy doing myself, and have spent years perfecting, then no. I always buy Automatic cars. Cars are for me so sleep inducing anyway, even the fast ones, that changing gear is just so irrelevant. Good demonstration of of how it works, indeed how well it works. Funny to see you floundering about it lol. The problem is you like burning petrol and making noise lol. I always think you over drive your bikes on the road. That is why I was so happy to see you get on a track where your natural bent can find its full expression. So what is next ? Whatever it is I look forward to it.

I'm honestly glad I gave it another chance, if for some reason my left side stopped working so good there's a great, and still fun, option there. But it'd have to be for that reason or like you, a Goldwing. Makes perfect sense on a colossus like that. Cars have honestly been ruined for me here anyway, not only are they fairly boring at the best of times they're over regulated here now and everyone sees anyone who likes them a little louder or faster as an outright hooligan lunatic. So yes, automatic cars all the way for getting shopping or when it's spilling rain. Haha I do, and I definitely over drive them tbh I won't deny it! :) Track videos should start releasing on Sunday if I don't get mad busy for some reason :) I hope you like them! I have a few more bikes coming :D

At what point, because of all the tech, does it cease to be a motorcycle and become a two wheeled car?
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
I don't think it'll ever become a two wheeled car tbh. I personally like older, less techy bikes too but there's nothing wrong with the techy stuff too. Each to their own, plus it's like trying to push back the ocean with your hands, unfortunately manufacturer's aren't going to make nice simple bikes again any time soon!

@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 9 месяцев назад
i never rode the ATAS in DCT but I have in manual. The only difference you get on the ATAS is the bigger tank, more weight and a better on road screen from the jump. I also prefer the colours. It really depends on your use case, if it's primarily on road - ATAS, off road - base model imo.

@@TheGorillaBiker Yes it's better to try before saying that it's not for me. But believe me it's not one hour test ride that will show you all it's capabilities. I first tried the DCT on a Integra and on a NC750X. When i bought the ATAS with DCT i immediately knew i made the right decision. My advise to all is to test ride the DCT with careful. Your electing not to use the +- paddles shows you don't fully appreciate how the system has capabilities that will add to the positive experience. With the paddles you can make small adjustments that become second nature.If you feel the gear is held too long or you'd like the revs immediately up or down simply tap the paddle any time. The shift is fast and better than a manual adjustment in a standard manual. Your review is thus incomplete. Learn the overall capabilities implement all the available features and DCT is hugely superior to a conventional manual. DCT has added a new (better) experience and made motorcycling that much more enjoyable.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Год назад
I did try them. I think I said that in the review. I didn't like them, it felt clunky to me. As I said DCT is a good system but I'd rather a manual with up/down quick shift. Much more fun experience in my opinion. You don't have to agree with me, it's not a fight like both can coexist peacefully. I'd likely never buy a DCT as I like manual. Some people really defend DCT to the hilt eh, I didn't even say it wasn't good like 😂😂😂
@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 Год назад
@The GorillaBiker 😁 Yes of course we can respectfully disagree! I'm surprised the paddle shifts were "clunky". That's unusual. The other area I find beneficial with DCT is heavy traffic. Filtering through jams becomes quite a bit easier. I've had 40 Motorcycles in my riding career. The last two, a Honda XADV and now the NT1100 both of course with DCT. Anyway in the future manual transmissions will disappear and you won't have a choice. Manual boxes have all but gone extinct. Both the auto world and Motorcycle world with gas engines will be legislated out of existence. Eventually (ugh) the Motorcycle industry will be electric. (Ugh again) Bye bye manual gearbox. All EVs will be twist or step and go with no possibility of manually changing gears. Sad really. Hopefully we have a decade or two remaining of manually changing gears! Geez I hope Full Self Driving never comes to motorcycling!!!😬
