2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport Interior Review - Missed Opportunities

Beth and I review the interior in the refreshed 2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport. While Honda made some great changes to the outside of the Ridgeline for 2021, the inside is almost identical to the 2020 model. In some ways this is good, with best-in-class interior space, tons of storage spaces, and a comfortable interior even in this base model. But for anyone that cares about infotainment or technology, the Ridgeline is using the same hardware it's had since its launch in 2016 sadly. Although the Pilot's identical dashboard gets nicer gauges and a far better infotainment system, Honda for some reason decided to leave these items in the parts bin and not upgrade the Ridgeline. Because of this, the tech is one of the worst offerings in the midsize pickup segment and makes the Ridgeline feel pretty dated despite the freshened exterior. Also, at this truck's as-tested price of about $40,000, most other midsize trucks give you more features for the same money. What do you think about the 2021 Ridgeline? Thanks to Honda for providing this vehicle to review.

Nailed it. There is no excuse for not updating the interior especially with that price point. As always, great review

It’s basically the same haha i have a 2015 civic si and there’s not difference besides probably my infotainment system being slightly faster haha I still want to trade it in for a ridgeline

I concur. Same infotainment system as my 2015 Honda FIT. It’s ok in a 15k car, but this is what they give you for 45k? Really. Just drop the stuff in from the pilot and odyssey already. Guess they ware saving that for the 2024 full redesign. And then at that point, it will be the same as my 2018 odyssey. Lol.

They did. Honda just put their focus everywhere except the interior. All body/sheet metal from the cab forward is new, as well as the rear. 9 spd Transmission standard across the entire lineup as well as AWD. Transmission is a push button with paddle shifters 🤷‍♂️. Cat back exhaust purely for looks. You can always swap interior components with the Pilot. But you shouldn’t have to. Honda really missed the mark here 🤦‍♂️

Nice and honest review as usual. I kind of disagree with the comment about buttons on steering wheel a bit. It look to me to be laid out in a very simple, straight forward fashion for ease of use. I would have appreciated it more than the typical trend for higher-level trim these days - that is to put every conceivable function on the center infotainment screen and then make the user have to hunt around for the function that the user want....

Remember how much more you pay for the base Taco truck. Talk about plastic, check out the Tundra. I have a 2021 RTL-E and it has much more soft touch material. I bought it for how I will use the truck, not how I will NOT use the truck. The bed trunk is awesome.

Hi Matt and Beth. So glad you did this review on the Sport trim Ridgeline. I have a 2017 Ridgeline Sport. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the spartan interior. I guess in the excitement of getting a new vehicle, I didn't really look at all the cheap plastic everywhere, or notice the horrible head unit, that was dated then. It's the handiest vehicle I've ever had, and very reliable. Unlike you, I cannot stand the slim armrests. I liken them to toothpicks, and the cloth interior stains very easy. Not long after I purchased the truck, I upgraded the stock head unit, and speakers. It has more features, sounds better, but is still laggy and disappointing. Something you didn't notice was how narrow the rear door opening is, probably because Honda got so many complaints on it, they actually switched them out to the front door stops to gain more room. Thanks for the excellent, unbiased review.

HELP! Matt and Beth, thanks for the excellent review. On the fence between Honda Ridgeline and Ford Maverick. I'm 63, wife is giving me one shot at a purchase of a truck and it must last as long as my Chevy S10 of 26 years. Which one do you both recommend?
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring 2 года назад
26 years is a lot to ask of any car, but between those two, I'd say the Ridgeline probably has the best chance of making it that long thanks to its simpler engine. If you do decide to go Maverick I'd recommend the hybrid instead of the turbo version. A similar hybrid system has been in use in Ford Escapes as taxis for over a decade now and they seem to run fine even after hundreds of thousands of miles. If you want the most bulletproof small truck possible though, I'd get a Toyota Tacoma.

Honda made plenty of updates to the Ridgeline, their focus just wasn’t on the interior. Like you said, a lot of the interior is interchangeable with the Pilot, so for them to not make those updates is a big miss in my opinion. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Weird the tailgate wouldn’t open for you. On mine I just hit the unlock button twice and it unlocks, unfortunately it’s not touch sensitive like the front door handles. I think my WRX hatch was the same to unlock the hatch, unlock button twice. And I agree about the infotainment, it would have been better to put the updated version in, but mine isn’t nearly as slow as the one you had. Definitely something wrong with the delay and sensitivity issues on that. Pre-production maybe? Only reason I can think of why they didn’t update it is because they didn’t want to spend the money to integrate the truck bed audio into the new system. I had the new system on a Pilot and it is much better but this older system doesn’t bother me. It would though if it was slow like what you experienced!

@@MattMaranMotoring I will check out your drive review now that it is up, You seemed a little hard on the Ridgeline interior, I test drove one and for a midsize truck I think it is really nice, doesn't seem cheap to me or feel low in quality. I do wish Honda sent you a higher trim level to test, Wonder why they are sending a base model sport out to people to test?? I agree with you about the center screen, that is sad it is that dated and slow?? Do you think they will put the new pilot center screen in there for next year??
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring 3 года назад
@@GothRocker7 I did an RTL-E back in 2017 so I've experienced a fully loaded Ridgeline too. Everything about it is pretty nice other than the gauges and infotainment again. I'm not sure when they'll improve those, the logical time would have been this year with this refresh. I think Honda sent the Sports because it better matches the new HPD package they wanted to promote.

considering how expensive the Ridgeline is. It's ridiculous they haven't kept its interior up to date like it's Pilot counterpart. I fear this generation of Ridgeline will face a similar fate as the first generation Ridgeline. And stay stuck frozen in time without updates for almost a decade.
@Morlay1
@Morlay1 3 года назад
I mean I agree that nicer gauges would be a plus, but it's the base model. No matter what there are going to be more "economical" choices. The larger screen is going to cost more. I assume they also want to incentivize more people to buy higher trim models. The infotainment unit is pretty inexcusable though. That should not pass in 2021 at all.
@MattMaranMotoring

On a base model, the stuff shown might be more excusable, but the top trim gets this same stuff.

Yeah with full sized trucks being priced into the stratosphere more people are reassessing their needs and getting into smaller trucks with more practical features.

It seems that they use all parts of ridgeline that were not sold before. Looking at the brightside, its like they care for earth by not dumping all unused parts and reuse for this year model. Hahhaa. Target market is new buyer and not the previous owner of ridgeline.
