@@CarSauce watching from Toronto Canada. I watched this video after buying this car 3 hours ago (delivery is weeks away though) therefore it didn't get to help me decide . But, it does help me stop second guessing. Thank you for this great review. It showed me useful features that the dealer or other videos didn't show us. We do like the suv styling for the higher seat, and the "old-fashioned" controls/buttons vs the tesla 3's single screen. It is fancier than the Chevy Bolt which did impress us but not as much as the Kona in a few key ways such as chair adjustment and comfort. I'll never need another car but I'll subscribe. :)

@CarSauce
@CarSauce 3 года назад
Yeah, they just announced the new facelifted variant of this car here. Model year (this car is an MY21) is different from build year, and so you will see many people refer to this variant here as 2021 and the new one as 2021. One is MY21 but build year 2020, the other is MY21 AND build year 2021. It's stupid, but thankfully changes are relatively minimal (apart from styling) and so this review is still very much relevant!

I’m not sure if i agree with the placement of the charging port. The most common areas of a car being hit in an accident is likely the front or back statistically so a front on collision would potentially damage the charging port too making it an expensive insurance claim. I prefer telslas charging placement to hyandai’s .

Collisions on any modern car are going to be very costly. The charge recepetecal is on the grille, but the charger is protected near the inverter. The respectable is not an expensive part, it's much cheaper than the fascia panel parts.

My friend has this car and I had the chance to drive it. Three things bothered me: the constant tire spin at every green light (and he's on Michelin tires) or when turning (probably bad front suspension design), and the rear suspension which is harsh and bouncy (reminded me of the Kia Soul actually), and finally the relatively long charging times (no Tesla supercharger here). Good things: incredible range, reasonably quiet, good quality materials, tons of money saved on gasoline. If you don't have government rebates or incentives, this car is expensive though. Would I buy one? Not bloody likely. I enjoy my gas-guzzling AWD Kia Stinger GT Limited too much (before gasoline-powered cars will eventually be extinct)! 😉 Thanks for sharing this review.

No doubt the comments will be full of people saying that it is madness to even consider any other car as preferable to a Tesla. I pretty much got told I was an idiot to even consider a top of the line Kona when I could have had a bottom of the line Tesla Model 3 for a similar price. Nonetheless, I got the Kona. Why? Well the Kona ticked a few boxes that the M3 didn't. Our previous car was not so easy to park. The M3 has a worse turning circle, the Kona is better. Our previous car had a bit less ground clearance that we were happy with on occasional dirt tracks. The M3 is the same, the Kona has slightly more clearance. We sometimes move bulky objects. The Kona has a square hatch opening; the M3 has a low boot. The M3 has a bit more total luggage volume but not by much and it is harder to access. The M3 has a 'frunk' but we do too now in the Kona as an aftermarket add-on. The Kona had about 10% more range (in 2019 comparison). The M3 gives you access to the Tesla supercharger network, which is a plus, but where we go, the NRMA fast DC chargers and other commercial chargers are making this Tesla advantage less compelling. The top of the line Kona has some nice things that are not in the bottom M3 such as heated and cooled seats and heated steering wheel. These mean that the cabin heater is often not needed which increases range. 10s of Watts to the seat and hands is more efficient than kiloWatt cabin heating. I prefer the more open view from the Kona. Either has ample performance. The Kona has real buttons and knobs for many functions. Our previous car had a lot of things on touch sensitive controls. This was fine when stationary but harder to use quickly and reliably without taking eyes off the road for too long while the car was in motion. The M3 touch screen alone was enough to be a deal-breaker for my co-pilot, and she preferred the more normal look of the Kona. The Tesla was a bit too 'look at me' for her taste. Personally, I think either car looks quite good but looks are low among my priorities. Teslas are nice cars and suit many people very well but, for us, the Kona was preferable. I have driven a Tesla model S and a model 3 and various other electric cars, even a 1917 Detroit Electric. Consider the Kona seriously. A lot of what makes people go 'wow' about Tesla are characteristics of just about every electric car, so pick the one that suits you.

Please do your research… The standard range Model 3 does 409km on the equivalent WLTP cycle, and from many reviews or talking to Model 3 owners, this is actually much more optimistic than the 449km of the Kona. I’ve been driving my Kona Highlander for 1 year and 36’000km and my average from new is exactly 12.7kWh/100km. A theoretical range of 500km. To do my job I would have had no choice but to buy the long range Model 3 at $99’000. That is a LOT more money for a car with a horrible build quality. No contest, the Kona is better value for money, and better in general unless you really need blistering 0 to 100km/h.
@CarSauce
@CarSauce 3 года назад
I mostly share your sentiment, but if people truly thought the Kona was a no contest better car, it would be the Kona that just became the world's best selling EV not the Model 3. I really like the Kona, but can't say much about the Model 3 as I haven't driven it 😊
@EVdownUnder
@EVdownUnder 3 года назад
@@CarSauce And it possibly would if Hyundai had more balls. Like most car manufacturers, they decided to build a few and see if they could sell them… Idiots! Still 3 months waiting time in Australia, more in the US and Europe. People buy a Tesla because it’s not just an EV. As in “it’s not a car, it’s an Alfa Romeo” sort of. People buy a Tesla because they get the most technologically advance EV money can buy, and it gets better every time an OTA improvement is received. People buy a Tesla because they can put any Toorak tractors to shame, and in near total silence. People buy a Tesla because of their amazing charging infrastructure. People buy a Tesla because Elon Musk. And people buy Tesla shares for the same reason. Logic has nothing to do with the share price, yet people buy them (I have). Tesla is the only company who truly believes in electric cars. VW is coming hard, but would they have if they didn’t get (deservedly) punished this hard? For now Tesla is still very young and as many say, a tech company more than a car company. My hope is that the Germans will teach them to align panels, and with the “Tesla tech” and the “German made” quality, I will be the first one to buy a Model Y. All that said I really enjoyed your review, especially your obvious delight at the instant torque. Even in a modest Kona, I challenge anyone not to smile under full acceleration. It just bugs me that most people get fooled by Tesla still using NEDC in Australia… Oh and for anyone buying a Kona, drive strait to a tire shop, get some money back for the brand new crappy Nexen, and install better tires. For example the European factory installed Michelin Primacy 4.

Great sound is important, but the tool who thought it was acceptable to place the amplifier protruding in the boot (top of the range only) should be sacked. And the other tool who thought that an air cooled battery was acceptable for Australia (after 7 years of data on the Gen1) has probably already been sacked. But at the end of the day, the main reason we Australians get such a limited number of EVs to choose from (where is the 62kW LEAF for example?) is thanks to the coal-waving idiot at the head of our country who thought it was perfectly fine to have no fuel emission standards… theconversation.com/australians-could-have-saved-over-1-billion-in-fuel-if-car-emissions-standards-were-introduced-3-years-ago-117190 Enjoy the LEAF. And if you haven't already, please tell us what you think of the Ionic. I think it is a great car (so does Jacinda Ardern actually). Quieter than the Kona, more range than the Leaf, and a liquid cooled battery...

Neither. You get way more car for way less money if you forget about EVs. Disclaimer: I own a Kona EV, and hate the very guts of it. Edited to add: You missed a whooooole lot of info on the Kona. The model you reviewed is the high-end model, there's two lower-end models for sale, in some markets even a lower-range model. The Kona EV is not identical to the Kona ICE. The frame is different, and a few other details are too. One major difference is towing ability. The Kona ICE can tow a decent trailer. The Kona EV says in the user manual "towing not recommended", though you can fit a tow bar to it. Eco limits airconditioning, Eco+ by default turns A/C off (though you can turn it back on) and also limits top speed to 60mph/100kmh. kona ev range The regen modes affect, among other things, how the car "coasts". Turn it off and the car will roll like it's in neutral. Turn it to 1 and it's going to slow down - VERY slowly. And as you said at level 3 regen it'll decelerate quite fast. The Kona also has a "Utility Mode" in which the high voltage battery supplies power to all the 12v systems. This is useful in many cases: If you have kids or dogs in the car in summer, turn on Utility Mode and the car will stay cool. If you go camping, you can run a 500W inverter off the 12v socket. If you are out partying, you can run lights and/or stereo without worrying that you'll kill off the 12v battery. Depending on your driving style and environment you get a lot more than the stated 258 miles out of it. I'll grant, I drive like my own granny (who had no driver's license...) but I regularly get over 300 miles on freeway - if I stay around 65mph/100kmh. If I go 85mph135kmh, the range drops drastically, even below the stated 258 miles. The worst range I ever got was with regen off, going uphill, coasting downhill, resulting in a near-empty battery at 130 miles. Hyundai also has an app to remote control some aspects of the car. It works moderately well, fails occasionally for no discernible reason. With the app you can see charge levels, start/stop charging, turn climate control on and off (it turns off automatically after 15 mins though), lock/unlock the doors, turn on/off valet mode, set timers for charging, climate control etc.pp. - I find those timers super convenient to get to a nice warm car in winter when going to work. If you have kids driving the car, you can also speed-limit the car and set geo-fence boundaries, including getting alerts when either is violated. Charging: As you can see at around 2:11 there is a charge level indicator in the charge port, and the white ring around the socket is an indicator: White = plugged in, ready to charge. Green = charging. Red = charge error. Last but not least: I like that the charge port is in front, BUT they neglected to add a seal. Consequently, dirt gets in it, and in winter it can freeze shut. A simple solution some Kona owners came up with is to add some cheap weather stripping around the edge of the charge door. I used closed-cell foam window seal 1cm thick, 1.3cm wide on mine. No more dirt, no more frozen door. So, yeah. Missed a few things. I still hate the car. LOL

@wombatdk

@@CarSauce Relatively simple. I had the car for a few days, then it went to the shop with a "Loss of Isolation" error for nearly six months while they tried to figure out what was wrong. Luckily that was during the lockdown so I didn't need a car anyway. The other issues I have are just small ridiculous oversights: The charge port door has nothing to prevent dirt or moisture from getting into it, which means it freezes shut if you drive on wet roads in winter. Easy fix, but very annoying the first time you encounter it. As mentioned, there's no USB charge plugs in the back. Likewise, while the Kona has plenty of room for a frunk, it doesn't come with one. The lower-end versions of the Kona (I have the middle Limited edition) don't come with roof rail attachments. You can't even add them as aftermarket accessories. The car has a super convenient "Utility Mode", except to use it you have to jump through some very odd hoops. Turning on that mode disables the key fob and app control, so you have to lock/unlock the car with the actual, physical key if you do need it locked. More generally, not Kona related gripes with EVs in general: Public EV chargers are usually out in the open. Which is terribly unfun if the weather is bad. If it's snowing, it gets even less fun. Charging is so terribly slow that any long distance trip immediately gets 10%-20% longer. And chargers at least here in the US are extremely inconvenient to use. Some have local credit card readers which may or may not work. Others require the use of an app - which again may or may not work. Tesla got this right. Everyone else gets a big fat F. Also, charging here in the US is usually billed by the minute (except, again, Tesla). If you're unlucky enough to have to charge past 80% where it gets really slow... it also gets REALLY expensive. With some charge networks there's a trick: stop the charge past ~84% when the Kona slows down charge current, restart it on a lower-speed, cheaper L2 charger and save LOTS of $$$.

If you buy a Hyundai be prepared to spend minimum of $175-$500 every month on BS problems you will never experience in a quality car like an Honda. Every other month you will have to replace 1 0f 6 to 8 catalytic converters that go out for no reason like clock work one after the other. Your gas line will need replacing, then your gas tank that rotted from the inside for no apparent reason. Your check engine light will be on more than it is off. When you finally replace the entire engine and decide you've had enough, and sell it for next to nothing, you'll buy yourself an Acura and realize that it never needs maintenance, that it isn't normal to be without your car every other month because it's in the shop again, and you'll swear like I did to NEVER buy another Hyundai again!!!
