Nice to see you in 2022! Thanks for joining me on this journey and thanks for opening this little box.
I've been creating these "year in seconds" videos for I think 4 years now and every year the final steps always make me really nostalgic for the year I'm leaving behind. It's funny... 2021 sucked in a lot of ways. I'm really lucky in the way that 2021 was hard for me was minuscule compared to what others had to face... but... in a lot of ways I'll always have some fondness for 2021.
In 2021 I grew a lot, some friendships blossomed, and I felt the most authentic Emma I have been in a while. As a third year medical student I shared in patients joy, fear, sadness, and relief. I found my heart in a specialty, and despite placements being threatened I was privileged enough to be present the entire year and although dragging myself out of bed on the early mornings, looking back I have a lot of gratitude for them.
I love doing these videos because even in 2021 a year of uncertainty, fear, online classes, schedules thrown in the air, and life turned upside down... in a world of bad news... every day I found something that made me smile. As you'll see from the video the top contenders in Emma's Smile competition are: Tuesday and Uni, a pretty sky, catching myself chasing my dreams (and Matt and my friends are in there too). I think that's pretty great.
Also in 2021 I learned a lot, and experienced some pretty cool firsts I would like to immortalise.
- I birthed a baby (the mom did the hard work but my hands guided it the final cms)
- I was first assist for the first time ever and it was a Caesarean Section!
- I went to therapy for the first time
- I sutured real skin
- I felt like I had a patient I could refer to as "mine" since I was part of their care from admission to discharge.
- I achieved overall HD in the clinical blocks across the entire year (maybe not a first but omg am I proud).
- First overnight shifts (and there were a few!)
and I'm sure there were many more things along the way. There's so much causal magic in life when you look around, and for me this compilation every year makes me look around.
... and yes... I was trying to avoid sitting in the snow on the chair.
