Regarding the belt jumping off. My local J D Dealer said that when you engage the blades, you must engage the blades with the the excelerater arm (the orange arm) in the middle not full exceleration. Once you engage the blades then you can shift the excelerater arm to high and when you disengage pull you excelerater arm back to middle. Hope this makes since.

I want one so bad to expand my lawn mowing business, but I don't have enough money. right now, I'm cutting yards with a 20-inch roybi electric mower which cuts horribly, and the battery will run out halfway through the yard and I will have to recharge it for 5 hours. I only have 1 customer so I'm making 20 dollars a week and I just really really want to expand my business with this dream-like mower.

The big thing if you have this mower delivered to your home is that lever in the back. make sure it is pushed in to be able to drive it. Took me 30 minutes to figure it out. hope this helps.

I have the S100. Great machine, with unfortunately poor assembly quality by Lowe's 🤦 It arrived scratched up by the Lowes employee who assembled it, and the nuts & bolts were hand tight. This is Lowe's fault. Once I tightened up everything properly with tools, I have been happy so far. Eventually I will get around to buffing out the scratches 🤦

This was a very helpful video to me. The John Deere S100 is the first riding lawn mower I have owned. I tried reading the operator's manual that came with the mower, and although it has good information, it just was not that helpful in getting me up to speed on how to operate and maintain it. Your video gave me exactly the information I needed to know. Good Job!

I have a 2002 craftsman mower with the same engine. The only thing I see that Briggs and Stratton has changed is the top plastic and fuel filter. I have maintained this engine annually for 22 years now, mowing 1 1/2 acres and have had zero issues. I change the engine oil and filter along with air filter annually with a fuel filter and plug every other year. I do take the engine cover off and blow out all debris from cooling fins annually also. I know people say Briggs are not great engines but maybe they do not maintain them or I got a special good one. You decide.

What a great How To video! I have never used a deck washer before. My property does not have any cement/asphalt - just a dirt driveway. Do you think that means I cannot use the deck washer feature? Do you have any tips for what to do before running the mower for the first time? Home Depot is doing a "curbside drop" so I am also checking for videos that let me know what to consider when I am moving/starting the mower for the first time ie. do I need to add oil on delivery .. grease/lube any parts? Thanks again for a great video.

Just bought a S100. I do have a question if you could respond. I am having difficulty getting my deck to level and it seems to have a vibration issue.. If I level it at 3.5" then lower the deck to the lowest position it is off. IF I level it low to the ground and then raise the deck position it off again by at least 3/8" from one side to the other. My real concern is the vibration. Could Lowe's be at fault for using a fork lift to pick up my lawn mower by the deck when they delivered it ? Thanks for any help !

Hmmm that is a good question. You may want to have a John Deere dealership look at it and make sure you don't have any damage that can be claimed on warranty. I hope this is helpful and thanks for watching

Great video it helped me a lot when I got the lawnmower but after 2 days of cutting the grass my belt broke. I bought it from Lowe’s so I don’t know if dealer have better quality but be aware if you are buying this from Lowe’s.

Great, thorough review!!! Ready to go to my local JD dealer then I read reviews on the JD site. Regardless of the purchase location many reviewers are complaining that new S100 series are throwing deck belts. In your review, you mentioned bolt on housings to prevent this from occurring. Can you shed any light on the issue? Thanks!

Most of the time when I hear of belts jumping off it is because the operator took the spindle covers off that hold the belt in place. The S100’s should all have the new belt guide system on the main pulley coming off of the engine, so it shouldn’t be jumping off there. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I challenge anyone to try to mow at night with these headlights. The reflectors aren't even a mirror finish but more of a painted silver. This is not unique to JD. Most mowers in this class have "headlights" that are more ornamental than they are functional.

@@whommee True... you can just make out that the bulbs are illuminated. My X500 is almost the same. Dim bulbs with a silver-painted reflector. Replacing with LED bulbs doesn't help much. I just find it comical that they actually think someone is going to be out mowing at night with the lights on some of these mowers. :-)

@@hamlet616723 I tried that with my X500 and it made very little difference because of the el-cheapo reflectors used. Instead of a mirrored finish like in a car headlight, they are a dull silver almost like a painted surface.

Reading about the s100 it says for yards up to 1 acre. I've had a craftsman lt2000 since 08 and its replacement time. Issue is my yard is about 3 to 4 acres. The lt2000 also has the 17.5 hp motor and it survived the large acreage. Ive never owned a JD tractor, Will the excess acreage cause issues or will it handle it ok? Thanks and good quality video 👍

It will handle it just fine. You may have to fill up with gas towards the end of your mowing but the surface area will not be an issue. Just make sure to follow routine maintenance and all will be well. Thanks for watching!

Great vid!! We’re entirely new to a riding lawn mower and this was easy to follow and understand. I do have one question that I can’t find the answer to anywhere, though. What’s that little switch below the seat with a gas tank sign for?

Thank you and that is actually not a switch, it is a fuel gauge. It is on a float so when you fill the tank up the piece that looks like a switch will be at the top and it will lower as you use fuel. Thanks for watching!

Does this mower have to have the POS -the blades going in order to go in reverse and forward? Mine wont reverse to get it out of my garage or forward unless the blades are going.

Great video appreciate the review. I knew that the mower cut going backwards I just didn’t read the manual nor did the delivery guy show us that particular operation. I have enough stuff to read and have read the safety instructions so that’s most important and didn’t mow backwards until knowing how to do it safely. Love my new John Deere mower less wear and rate on the aging body.😎👍🏾❤️

I just purchased a BG 50 leaf blower from Western Equipment from Lubbock Texas Clovis road and they didn't even ask me anything about buying Motomix to increase my warranty at all I noticed when I go buy equipment I'm never asked if I need help and barely get answers to important questions.I bought a bran new FS94R weedeater in Plainview Texas and they did offer the moto mix which I bought to extend my warranty and was very pleased with the young man that took his time on his lunch break to help me trough the process of purchasing great STEHL equipment.I sure will not be doing business in Lubbock any more.I will travel elsewhere to do business with good people.Man what a mess.disapointed.

Small engine mechanic here. Do not buy a mower with this engine. It truly is garbage. They never seem to run right (surging) and they have some pretty serious issues such as camshaft failure, carburetor problems, and they blow up randomly.

I knew I wasn't fucking crazy I spent $2,300 on a brand new s120 and it came with only one key I even spoke today idiot manager and he didn't know nothing about it and I thought it was real stupid so I guess I will have to notify John Deere give him the serial number and get a new key is that the correct way of doing it

The single cyl Briggs suffered badly from camshaft issues,,, however the twins in the S120 and up don't. Buy the twin version if you can squeeze the extra$$

I just had my S100 delivered today, all assembled. The fuel gauge below the seat appears blank, it is not on the hour gauge. There is a sliding piece, but it seems flimsy and blank no matter what position you slide it. Am I missing something here? And yes, I can see the fuel tank is full.

So the piece under the seat is a floating fuel gauge. so if your tank is full the slide should be all the way at the top. When it is empty, it will be sitting on the bottom. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

just got my s100 and I can't get it to move forward. What am I doing wrong? It starts, the brake is not engaged, but when I hit the pedal, it doesn't move.

Check the rear of your machine and see if the transmission release lever is pulled out. If so turn the machine off and push it in and then start it back up and it should work. If this doesn’t work then check your transmission belt which is located above the mower deck and runs from the bottom of the engine to the rear of the machine. My s100 has already broke a belt at 9 hours and it is not smooth at all while engaging the blades. Just put on a new belt and it still shakes badly when engaging the blades. Any advice?

Unfortunately this has been a very common problem on this specific mower and I have not heard of a for sure fix yet, but it would be worth a call to your local dealer to see if they know of anything. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Maybe try another dealer in your area that’s interested in helping. If there isn’t one, you might have to try and tackle it yourself and buy a new fuel gauge.

Bought my first John Deere S100 last October and have mowed with it for 10.5 hours, broke my second belt today. This could get expensive at $40.00 a belt. I have been mowing my yard with a lawn tractor for 21 years and only had to replace two belts.

I wonder if the S100 is durable? Do you need to maintain the machine frequently? Is it prone to failure? Will it be difficult to start the engine after a winter in the north? Is there enough horsepower in the family backyard? Thank you I want to know about these.

These machines require normal service like any other mower and I have seen 100 series mowers last people for years and years. There has been an issue on a lot of these mowers with the belt coming off so I would suggest looking one step up to the S110. They will have the horsepower to do the mowing that you need and as long as you take the normal precautions of using fuel stabilizer and a battery tender during the winter you shouldn't have any problems starting in the spring. I just bought the S100 and it was a repaired unit by John Deere don't know what was wrong with it but I was wondering way the fuel tank is not mounted in the frame work I didn't receive any information on the mower so can I call or go to you or John Deere and get a warranty for it or I'm I sol on that it was sold as is from Lowe's in homestead Florida

The TL-200 transmission is not very durable. If you mow hills, or stress it in other ways, it will need replacing in pretty short order.

I have an S100 myself, actually my second one within a matter of months. When I purchased my mower I noticed when engaging the blades that they don't engage right away. I thought the deck belt that was on my machine was old and stretched but I compared it with a new belt and looks the same. I've seen videos on older mowers that on the tension cable bracket there are 2 bolts that you can loosen and adjust the tension on the deck spring but the S100 is welded onto the deck and I did notice the spring is very loose, to the point it's resting on top of the deck. Is there any other way to adjust that tension cable?

Hello for winter there’s a little pool of gas I can’t siphon out, anything I can put in there to evaporate it so the carburetor doesn’t get gummed up? Thanks so much

My recommendation here would be to invest in a small bottle of fuel stabilizer and then mix it with a small amount of gasoline. Then run it in your mower for a while to get everything clean in your fuel system (lines, carburetor, etc.). Then turn the fuel off on your mower if you have a valve and if not then let your mower run completely dry. Or you could completely fill your tank with the fuel stabilizer and fresh gasoline mixture, run the stabilized fuel through the system, and then it should be fine to let sit over winter. just purchased the S170. whats your thought on the easy oil change? any concern with it only replacing 40% of oil?

For your average residential customer that puts around 50 or less hours a year on a mower I think it is totally fine. For users that run their mower much more than that in a season, I would maybe want to convert it back to a standard oil change system. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

do you know why the paint flake of the earlier models - I've started with a L100 up to the D100 and have the S100 on order, the other two had pain issues (flaking off body and deck), bare metal under once the paint flake falls off. Hope they've solved it with this model. I'm getting mine in a couple of week. Thanks for the vid.

Great review. I was considering a zero turn but need a mower that can do massive amount of leafs. Looking at a John Deer with a leaf mulcher. I'm getting to old to tarp my leaves out to the street. My leaves cover about 10 car lengths and 6' deep. It's usually a 8hr day.
