BMW F850 GSA v. KTM 890 Adventure R v. Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel v. Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro v. Yamaha Tenere 700
Remember back in the day of group gatherings how hard it could be to find time in everyone’s busy schedules to congregate? To get together for a week-long ride or some other getaway? Without fail everything would start to slot into place just in time for your best friend to have something come up. You’d try to reschedule and that too would fall apart for one reason or another. The phrase “herding cats” comes to mind. Locking down this group of middleweight adventure bikes was kind of like that. It’s a test we’ve been attempting to schedule for six months. As is always the case, some “friends” are more reliable than others.
But, none of that matters now because here we are with the MVPs of the scorchin’ hot middleweight adventure segment. Never you mind that these “middleweight’s” displacements have continued to swell as is tradition in motorcycling these days. Rather, focus on the real world functionality of these machines. These bikes are lighter, smaller, and more manageable than their 1200cc(+) counterparts, which, at least for me, makes them more enticing to push the envelope off-road.

One thing they failed to touch on: Moto Guzzi is well known for building bikes that last. To my knowledge, the v85tt is the only dual sport with a shaft drive. I love a shaft driven bike. They just last forever with little to no maintenance. That guzzi engine is bullet proof and battle tested. There’s a reason it’s been essentially the same for a hundred years. Air cooled engine, longitudinal crank, very little plastic... It’s just a gem of a motorcycle. And it’s Italian.

I disagree. Tires that come stock on the bike are the tires that the vast majority of people are going to be using for at least the first couple thousand miles. How's the bike handles on its stock tires is pretty important.

I just know that a lot of people don't really put that many miles in their bike and some the original set of tires might be the only set of tires they ever experience. No matter what it'll certainly be the first set of tires they experience.

@@DoRC I understand what you are saying and it is true that some people ride very little and the original tires will be the first and long lasting impression they have of the bike. But when you are comparing the abilities of the bikes it is important that the focus is on the bikes and not the tires. Therefor having the same tires on all the bikes levels the playing field and keeps the focus on the bikes.

The Moto Guzzi comes with luggage for the price listed. Also a few other items like taller windshield for the price. So, it is ready to tour. You still have to spend money on top of the price of the Triumph or BMW to tour. For 2021 the Moto Guzzi also now comes with tubeless spoked rims. Personally I would choose the Moto Guzzi, but am still enjoying my Himalayan for off-road exploring.

Some of this days when the "big" adventures bikes switch to a 1700 cc engine, the "middleweight " bikes are going to be the r1200 gs and such. I remember when a 400 was a "big" bike

I remember the days I started of on an 800 cc middleweight sports tourer. (at the time that was the smallest displacement available for non adventure bikes with BMW) Afterwards I've seen the light and went for big adventure tourers to use 99% on the street...

Guys, you had the 2020 Guzzi running. The 2021 has a bit more electronic functions, has a small motor change to kill that flat moment at 2000 rpms and new tubeless rims which are also lighter. But overall a great review

It is an excellent and very fun, fun, fun bike to ride. Service intervals are great, first oil change by 1500km, and till 30,000kms it is just oil changes. Dead simple.

Kind of surprise the T 700 was in here, I guess the fact that it's in between so much is a factor. I'm used to seeing it competing with with klr650 and V stroms due to the price bracket

It's a testament to how competent the bike is vs bikes that are far more expensive than it. A BMW K1600 or Goldwing for instance, would be a fantastic touring bike to ride across country, but that Triumph could do it with almost the same comfort and ease, for a lot less.

@@monunyabidness5949 I really doubt they offer the same comfort. I know my R1250GSA is more comfortable than a triumph 900 and the K1600 is more comfortable than my GSA. No experience on the Goldwing. but the goldwing nor the K1600 will be twice as comfortable than the Tiger 900. Diminishing results. For some the engine ain't that important, but quality and comfort can be. When I switched from a 800 to 1200 GS I noticed that the size of the engine is only a small part of the extra price, the quality of parts and the comfort are more important to me than the aditional power.

I agree. I have tried the Triumph, BMW and KTM. They are plasticky and their engines are characterless. The Guzzi has great build quality, a peach of an engine and you can ride it all day. It's got shaft as well.

Should have called it Adventure bikes for rich guys (or guys in hock up to their eyebrows). I had a BMW 800 and the maintenance cost were astronomical. I ride a lot of miles so it added up quickly. Sold the BMW and got a CB500X; I can ride it on everything you guys did in the video and not cringe at the thought of the next maintenance visit. It has enough power for the street and trail but doesn't need any electronics to tame it. It also weighs significantly less that any of the bikes you tested and feels light and nimble in all riding conditions. As an added bonus I no longer feel the need to race everyone because I know at the start that I'd loose, so it keeps me safer.

One thing reviewers usually forget to mention is the v85tt travel comes with semi hard panniers and the adventure model which costs less, comes aluminum rear box and side panniers, plus still has cruise control. Best value, most comfortable tourer, works for average and below average height guys, and easiest to work on yourself in my non-expert opinion.

That's one thing that always gets overlooked as reviewers are dazzled by diddling with electronic shocks they'll soon need a 2nd mortgage on their house to afford to replace: SIMPLICITY.

@@StockySnail Exactly. As long as the parts can be mailed, pretty simply DIY projects. For something a little more cumbersome like changing fork oil, it should be cake for any metric bike dealer.

I love these shootouts. I like that you pick different bikes for different riding conditions. I also like that you show which one you would choose if someone tossed you the keys and also if you had to write the check out of your bank account. These are important decisions to consider when getting a bike. Give us more of these.

Best review of the middle weights! Having common tires was key! I loved that one having 50/50s and others having 90/10s wasn't an issue. I have the 850 GSA and it is best for me. I commute during the week, tour with my wife occasionally and BDR type of roads on the weekends. It is a wonderful motorcycle for all of that!

These punch a little higher than the VStrom... in off-road ability as well as displacement. Vstrom 1000 would fit in this pack, and should be there.

No matter how much people push it, the V Strom nor the Versys will never be Adv bikes. The only thing adv it has is the riding position. Cast wheels and 6in of suspension travel is not ADV

I have an all black Tenere 700 and I love it. You all did a good job breaking them down to each feature and definitely agree with everyone about using the same tires. Forgot to mention the fully adjustable suspension on the Yamaha and the removable rubber on the pegs. Well done tho. I watched the whole thing.

I was lucky enough to get my order in for the T7 last May. Received my bike in July and have been so happy! Previously owned a Tiger 800XCX. I do miss the buttery smooth triple, but I have nothing to complain about with this little Xplane engine. I ride with 790’s and 1200 boxers and never feel I can’t keep up. So fun and easy to ride in the dirt.

My guzzi had that exact flat spot too at around 2,500rpm but a DNA air filter sorted that out along with decat pipe and booster plug, loving my v85

I really need to test ride one. I'd love the simplicity and shaft drive for just getting on and going and going. I commute, do BDR style rides as well, but also have a 450EXC in the garage for harder off-road trips.

Out of those bikes I'd pick the Guzzi. By far the best looking, 2nd cheapest (and it looks at least $5000 better than the cheapest), the only one with shaft drive convenience. In the end it is not even close!

@M.L.D. 1.2.3. I don't think it's fear. I've had plenty of chain drive sport bikes. I keep my bikes very clean and would just prefer to not have to clean and lube the chain, and clean the rear wheel constantly of thrown oil or other-based, chain lube. I had a belt drive bike that was efficient, as you note, easy to maintain, and stayed clean. I was concerned that belt would stretch and need frequent adjustments and replacing, but it did not. I thought it was a great drive solution because it had the advantages of little weight and good efficiency, but low maintenance.

This is Thomas how you guys did a great breakdown I did a lot of research on the V 85TT and there is a lot of heritage there and I just like the fit and finish on the bike and I took it out today and gave it a little bit of a hard ride for about a half hour just to kind of see if it would appeal to me and I was very impressed but I’m going to the cat and do a different pipe and lighten it up a tiny bit and I’m short and lowering it a tiny bitAfter that we’ll see

Moto Guzzi: Stylish and amazing tourer. KTM: State-of-the-art insanity but ugly AF. BMW: Excellent all rounder, a bit bland. Triumph: Excellent all rounder, not bland at all! Yamaha: You simply cannot afford not having it. The most impressive motorcycle in recent years, all things considered.

What a great shootout, I really enjoyed this particular one as it has three that I am considering and now a fourth being the Tenere. Only the Guzzy doesn’t really appeal to me but I have to admit it’s pretty damn cool! Your format is spot on, honest reviews and pointing out which type of rider would enjoy which bike and why. I also appreciated modifications you recommend for each. Now I need to go test ride that Tenere, that 64 hp motor keeping up with the others has me intrigued.

Great format with allot of information that would be useful in buying any of the bikes. I would take the KTM. As I am a dirt bike rider at heat and would go with seat comfort seat and TKC 80 tires.

I put a $500 deposit at my dealer and 3 weeks later I had mine. Not too bad and I’ve owned 30 something bikes in my lifetime. We all know being a Yamaha it’s going to run for 250k miles with just basic maintenance and THAT alone makes it the best in my opinion.

well i was certain that it would be my next bike until my friend got his , spent thousands in aftermarket while waiting for it and now with under 1000 miles he is selling it already , he says it feels slower and softer than any bike he has ever owned he just cannot get excited about riding it , he has an mt10 & older well kept klr650

I'd love to see one of these same comparisons but each rider had to go out and get a second hand adventure bike for 10 grand and under. Would be really interesting to see what came up as a second hand winner.

Great comparisons! I have owned 2 KTM Super Dukes so I would be interested in the 890. If your desert rides are not too far on the paved road, I would consider the 390 Adventure. 380 pounds wet, 43 horsepower, TFT, stability control with IMU. ONLY $6100. The lighter the bike off road equates to more fun. I grew up on 200 pound 2 stroke dirt bikes. So fun. I wish KTM would make a street legal dual sport 2 stroke. Light weight, not a top heavy 4 stroke, and 2 stroke simple maintenance. I guess we can dream!

@@Howling-Mad-Murdock The 300 EXC-TPI should be road legal unless there are specific emission standards they can't pass. Other than that the bike is surprisingly fuel efficient, consuming around 40% less fuel than a 125 EXC.

i would already have an 890r but for all the computer nanny nonsense and the fact that my local dealer sucks ass so anything the dealer has to do i have to take my 1090r a few hours away to a different dealer

@William Moore jealousy is ugly , most of my riding career i rode 5-10+ year old used honda XRL's or KLR's or the like but even then i did not dislike others who could ride new GS's or what not just because i could not///// anyway good luck to you with soo many great choices in this class of bikes today that we did not have not so long ago there has to be 1 that works for you

GREAT REVIEW GUYS!!! Thanks so much for comparing these middleweight bikes. I am a little torn between the Tiger and the Moto Guzzi. I already have a Tiger 800XCA that I love but the 900 Rally Pro is such an improvement. With that said, as I am getting into my late 50's, I think I may want to switch to a more relaxed but capable ride of the Moto Guzzi and bring my girl with some good Italian wine and music on the Guzzi...Saluti!!

Well I've been riding my guzzi v 85 tt for a couple weeks and I'm loving it. Whenever i hop off it i just can't keep helping to turn around and just staring at how beautiful it is and the stares it gets at traffic stops and from other bikers are also nice. Out of all the bikes in this shootout i feel like the guzzi looks the best and I'm not even being biased here. Its super comfortable even with my girlfriend at the back and with the panniers and also very affordable in my opinion. Maintenance is a breeze with the shaft drive too.

I think too often we here "It´s a great bike!" for almost any bike tested by anyone. Of course there is no all-around star and of course nowadays they are all "great bikes. So, guess what?! It depends what you want to use it for. So, in my humble opinion: on road: 1.) Triumph, 2.)Moto Guzzi 3.)BMW 4.) KTM & Tenere off-road: 1.) Tenere, 2.) KTM, 3.) Triumph, 4.) BMW, 5.) Moto Guzzi Combined for the average Touring type as I am , incl. perhaps 10% off road: clearly the Triumph, with the beautiful Moto Guzzi as 2nd. (And that humble opinion comes from a German! Treason!)

You can keep them all. I notice there is never any reference to warranty claims. BMW leads all other manufacturers, even Harley for the number of claims. You want reliability, rideability, price? V-Strom! All hail! That being said, a pretty comprehensive test other than the aforementioned omission. Well done.

I’ve seen BMW GS bikes hitting 100k+ miles when maintenance is kept up. And then the CP2 engine in the tenere 700 is THE most reliable engine on the market at this time. Not to mention these are ADV bikes. The v strom weighs more and has less hp than the tenere. The only think that I would say makes the v strom a somewhat better option for touring is a larger gas tank. However I’ll be going to bike week Tuesday to ride both and then I can come back with an actual opinion not just reading specs

how about the yamaha though ? or an africa twin are they less reliable ?? either in stock form would blow even the most farkled V strom out of the water performance wise
