I suspect it's a bit like the first-generation jet airliners and bombers like 707 and B-52 (especially after the Comet and B-47 accidents). The engineers decided that they didn't quite understand the forces they were dealing with so they way overbuilt everything. Right now I suspect the manufacturers are more concerned about gaining market share and maintaining a reputation in this still relatively developed market. As these companies get better understanding of the most common failure modes on electric vehicles they will commence with cost reduction in ways that they believe will not increase failure rates signifigantly. But right now it is probably too much risk for them to try to save a few dollars on each car produced.

Yep! And Volvo was owned by Ford for a considerable time as well, and while it did not end up as badly as for Saab, the guys at Volvo weren't very happy about Ford:s management practises... Geely is a lot more hands-off, basically "We'll get you a bunch of cash, you do your thing!" - and it's working out very well.

People in general don't understand how much praise for their efforts means to engineers. Praise from someone like Sandy is better than a raise or a promotion. Few people realize how hard it is to juggle resources within a budget and do a better engineering design than your predecessors. It's far harder to work with your mind than your hands and there's less evidence to prove how much went into the project. That's true of most new STEM work. When you do a great job, people look at it and think that the choices you made would have been obvious to anyone. All they care about is how pretty it looks and what they have to pay.

sandy mentioned most people making bad decisions or ones just for sake of legacy parts are his age and retired or dead. It makes me wonder how does sandy stay on the cutting edge so well when many of his peers (at least age wise) are stuck in old technology? I find it really impressive, I was actually shocked when I heard Sandys actual age! He moves around and works/speaks at a much higher level then so many others at his age, in this industry or otherwise. speaks to loving what you do I guess, sandy still has that excited energy when he sees stuff he is passionate about. inspiring for sure! I had uncle like him. The most amazing guy I ever met. Oh Lord how I loved him as a kid! He was so obsessed with his passions that he had no time left to grow old. And then he got Alzheimer’s and it was such a horrible thing to watch. But he was still himself. Even at the end his old self kept coming back. Like a miracle- the poor man was sitting there, completely absent. And then all of sudden he joined the conversation in the middle of it, said something totally on topic, had a little argument and switched off back again... I think it’s that constant being in the topic you love that keeps you so fresh. You never stop, so the age can’t keep up?

Sandy, I don't know if you will ever see this but couple of things as a long time Volvo owner. The riveted lower ball joint came in with S40 / V50 in 2005. It is common part with some other cars, if I recall correctly it was Ford Mondeo. But on the other car it is bolted, so in many cases if you need to change it - you need to buy the part from the "cousin". The door handles you spoke last time. Yeah, freezing rain is a thing in Sweden and there is little to no that can be done without the handles. Also the really small wing mirrors have kind of always been a Volvo thing but that become really pronounced again in the S40 / V50 from 2005 onwards. They are even smaller than the mirrors in this one.

True, but remember Volvo wants you to subscribe, not purchase. ;) That being said, their subscription is a great deal if you are going to spend this kind of money on a car, but I think only Volvo, not Polestar, does the subscription. It seems simpler to use the same Front Unit (suspension and motor) for all the models and have two different Rear Units. Any advantage for Front Wheel Drive beside Rear Wheel Drive for an EV, as I expect that the 4WD will mostly be in 2WD mode?
