2021 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Doppelkupplung (PDK) Is The Fastest Way Around A Track

Many automotive enthusiasts feel sports cars simply must have a manual transmission and the Porsche 718 GT4 comes standard with a very good six-speed. But the quickest way around a track is with the 7-speed dual-clutch Doppelkupplung gearbox. You may know it as the legendary PDK with eye-blink gear swaps. At least there's no argument that the naturally aspirated 4-liter flat-6 Boxer engine making 414 horsepower sounds like a symphony. Tom Voelk checks out a Euro-spec 718 GT4 and says buy the one that works for you. And let's not forget, some people find the gearing in the 6-speed manual to be little tall.

Very enjoyable review. I am from the Seattle area as well and enjoy seeing our local scenery. In regard to the transmission, I have a 718 with a PDK and I love it. I’ve had some great sports cars with stick shifts which I enjoyed but the overall experience, for me, is better with the PDK.

nicely done review as always; miss driving manual transmission cars, but, PDK's are nicer. Engineering nowadays is more sophisticated. Own a '18 991.2 Carrera and it's great - let the car do all the thinking and it's more optimum - also agree with the cupholder design - not good for tall drink containers; Karma - I also notice that while driving - I just let all those fanboys do their things; don't need to prove anything driving any Porsche.

So it sounds like the typical high-performance problem: this, or a classic or 20 year old version you can enjoy on public roads? I still got tickets in my 944t after all. Your recommendation, Tom? Edit: thank you for understanding Porsche on its own terms, ie as insane driving machines which really need a few screaming revs to get through the week in good shape.

Good review. As for the gearbox, to each their own. I had no qualms trading the smoothness of the PDK for the additional thrill of rowing my own gears. As good as the PDK is, it detracts from the overall experience. Having said that I understand why those either trying to smash laptimes on the track, or people not comfortable with manuals might spring for the PDK option.

PDK should actually be a DPK according to the spelling unless I am missing something here. I think they purposefully switched the order so people would actual think 'pretty-damn-quick' and snicker to themselves. Plus, PDK just sounds better. I have a watered-down version of it in my GTI (DSG) and I love it. Once the car is up to speed, there are few things more satisfying than carving through curves using the paddles. Shifts seem almost seamless. Love the color on the GT4, beautiful. Hate the wing. It would be hard to buy a 911 if something this good was in my price range. Your red-light, green-light synopsis was right on target again. HA! on the Model 3 dweeb!

@christopherprose3881
@christopherprose3881 2 года назад
@@philgt3877 Thanks for the clarification on the topic. Should have figured Porsche would make sure their own name was attached to the feature atop of the actual car being a Porsche. So a PRS would be a Porsche Racing Seat, a PAW would be a Porsche Alloy Wheel, etc., etc., it seems. Wonder why my GTI DSG isn't a VDSG. Anyway, good to learn something new. All in all, the Germans still lead the way in technical innovations that we too often take for granted. I believe it was Mercedes that developed the first ABS system which is standard on all cars now.

I have a GT4 on order, however the "bespoke" rear is still a joke for this price point. It should NOT have a strut rear-end, it deserves a true multilink. You have to run a LOT of rear toe-in (aftermarket rear toe-links required) to keep that rear end planted under harding braking or when upset mid-corner.

I disagree for both interior and exterior. The exterior looks amazing and the interior I like much more than the new 992. The 992 interior is more luxury rather than sport. Also, piano/gloss black does NOT belong in ANY car's interior PERIOD. It shows dirt, smudges, and scratches. That Bic shaver looking thing in the 992 looks like an afterthought as well.
