THE MOST realistic video I've watched. Frustration and foul language would match me just about word for word....but the job got done, and it got done right.
I have small hands, so I reached the dang filter. The battery on my DIL freaking 2019Ford Escape was a B!×=&%! to replace. But I got it done! After several bad words...🤦♀️🫣
I USE A DOG TRAINING "PEE PAD" TO COVER THE STEERING RACK/AXLE TO CHANGE OIL FILTER ....... LET OIL HIT PAD AND IT ABSORBS THE OIL INSTANTLY........... WORKS GREAT AND NO MESS
@@5beesgarageI’m on my 3rd oil change on mine and I’ve come to the conclusion that Chrysler engineers are determined to see how much a man can use profanity during a oil change, I’ve been stuffing rags up in there to try and catch as much oil as possible, got to try the training pad next for sure
Great video! I have the same truck and agree the oil filter location is a pain. I started fitting a large ziplock bag over it (once it's a bit loose), then remove it with the bag in place. After it comes off, hold it in place another 30 seconds for additional drainage. This works like a champ for me. I've always done my own changes, especially since I average about 45k miles per year and change every 5k so I save a ton of money.
I learned that after watching this video I should take my dodge to the dealer lol all kidding aside excellent video and I know feel confident I can change my oil so I thank you. And I hope the engineer who designed your truck are watching AND learning! 👍
Thanks for the comment 640. I am glad you learned something although its not a how-to but more of a how I do it. I hope the engineer is watching too. LOL
That’s why I did an oil filter relocation kit in my Ram 1500 Classic to have the filter up front. Better access, less mess, and I can use a larger filter. 👍
Toyota has a drain plug housing for the oil change Works well , just connected one of those small clear hoses to the plug all the way down to the used oil conditioner, there’s gotta be a third-party design housing with a filter for easy drainage!
Use a gallon zip lock bag to takeout the oil filter , first loosen the oil filter, then cover it with the ziplock bag and remove all the way ,you may have a bit of oil drip but it helps
Great video. I used 5W30 Kendall GT-1 and changed it about every 8K miles in my 2015 Ram 5.7. Has no issues at all never used a torque wrench to change oil in my life.
@@5beesgarage I believe you are right as long as the fluids meet the OEM specs. My current truck gets whatever is on sale and regular fluid changes on all fluids.
Excellent video. Although I be one of them thar college edjumacted mechanical inguneers, you cracked me up and I couldn't agree more with your extensive slamming of my brother cohorts.
Love the comments about "collage educated" engineers but let me tell you what most likely happened. The oil filter, drain plug, sway bar, etc etc all came together at different times on different vehicles. Even if the "engineer" knew how to change oil (many don't) and went their boss to say "hey boss, we need to move the filter"...their boss would say "can't do that cost money and time" You see, bean counters run most manufacturing companies now. The people in charge NEVER changed their oil, repaired anything, and don't understand the frustration of those who do. Next time you fill out one of those stupid marketing/satisfaction surveys be sure to mention: "how about trading proper oil filter/maintenance access for 1 less USB port or confusing touchscreen controls" Most likely you'll be met with a blank stare.
LOL, all of us use the same expletives about that filter! 😆 I actually was viewing to figure out how not to get all messy...oh well. But Bassquatch comment here about the ziplock bag is great. Going to try today.
Not sure how many more times you have had to do this but it's easier to get to the filter from the front over the cross bar and long funnel works great.
This is also a simple job if you are laying down with your feet sticking out the front of the truck, position yourself so you can reach your right hand straight up to filter. Now if you angle your body so your feet are pointing in the direction of the passenger front wheel you can reach your left hand up and grab the filter with that hand coming from the front side of the engine. Bam, both hands are now on the filter and its an easy turn.
Poking a hole in the bottom of the filter and using a snake drain is great advice. Also, if your garage floor is epoxied cleanup is a snap! Thanks for the video.
Your super funny, I enjoyed all commentating…. I’ve been searching online for the dip stick for the oil…. my dad said it doesn’t exist in his new 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn.. Would like to see the tool needed to get in to check the oil… And, buy that tool for my dad… FYI. At the end of your video I was waiting for you to check the oil. All in all great show of the oil changing process!
Catherine, Thanks for your comment. I apologize for not showing the dip stick location. I will be sure to include it in my next video. I hope to have it out this weekend. It will be about a lawn tractor but I will add checking the oil in the Ram for you.
Poke the bottom of the filter with an icepick or a nail set. Pull it out, and quick swap in a long funnel to direct the flow into the drain pan. I've been doing the ice pick thing for years to keep it from waterfalling the outside of the filter on my F250s where you have clear access all day, but this is the first change on my Longhorn. Looks like I'll need one of those bendy funnels I've wanted anyway.
Great video! I’m going to do my first oil change on my 2021 Ram tomorrow. Thanks! This video was very helpful to save me time! Looking forward to getting the factory filter out. Hopefully it’s not too tight in there. 👍🏼
@@5beesgarage the mopar factory filter was on very tight and I crushed and cracked it a little getting it out. The new one I put it on a solid hand tight.
Excellent video, excellent commentary. My words would have been a lot more colorful 🤣 I didn’t watch this video to learn how to change oil but to see what type of filter wrench was used. Pulled the plug then looked at the filter and spewed some colorful words. Now I’ll go back and see if I can turn it by hand first. The MoFo that designed that! And I like the bag method, gonna try that. I’m gonna take a stab at it and say your from one of the four of five boro’s Amirite?🍺🍺
Quaker State out performs most brands. Project Farms channel puts a bunch to the test and Quaker did very well.. Definitely worth the price. This video is going to do well bro!
Thanks Chris. Project Farm is a great channel, he does an amazing job on all his videos. I hope it does well. Just video'ing the things I do "in the garage" and having fun doing it. Little engines to big ones.
I use to put the best in my Challenger 3.6, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Shell. Changed the oil every quarter, even if the car chime didn't go off. Flushed the engine every other year, and would also do a intake and fuel rail cleaning. It still developed a lifter tick (known as the Hemi tick) at 100k. Now with the Ram I just throw whatever cheap Dexos-compatible synthetic is on sale. Screw that noise, Chrysler has a major design flaw with its Pentastar and Hemi engines.
People over-rate the importance of brand name oil. When it comes right down to it, they all meet the exact ASTM standards. As long as you change the oil and filter regularly, you can use any brand of ASTM certified oil with confidence. Who do you think makes the Wal-Mart branded oil? Not Walmart.
I have a 2021 5.7 ETorque variant and the filter is in the same spot but it’s even more cramped because of additional electrical components in the way. Thanks for the help.
a simple solution for the oil filter is that Stellantis college students should plug-in a filter that can be change only after 50K miles. all you should have to do is just drain the oil and fill a new oil. thats it.
Nice video, plenty of cussing and complaining. You must be from the northeast. Hilarious to watch, and yet educational. Thanks for the Saturday morning laughs.
As crazy as it sounds, the filter location is better now than it was in 2017 where it was behind the power steering and you couldn’t even grab it. Lol. Next time take tin foil and create a funnel to catch the oil or you can take a gallon zip lock bag and use it to take off the filter and catch all the excess in the bag…..just a few things I have done in the past to avoid some of the mess. As far as the Quaker state….it’s WAY BETTER than the crap coming from a drum that the dealer would be putting in it. Great video brother….I absolutely see what kind of mess to expect before I tackle this tomorrow. When I had the 2017 I actually was going to get a filter relocation kit LOLZ
Thanks for the comment and suggestions. I will certainly try the tinfoil and zip lock bag tricks next time. I can not believe the filter could actually have been in a worse location in the past. Just ridiculous.
I wonder if you could create an oil catch using a hot water bottle? Cut the bottom open, add an oil drain tube. Kind of like the oil udder but bigger...
Not going to hear a thing from me on your choice of filter and oil. The Fram XG/Ultra filters are very well made. Anyone who confuses them with the less expensive orange Frams doesn't know anything about filters. As for Quaker State, it is owned by Shell and is super high quality. Compare its specs to anything from Mobil, Castrol, etc. But keep it quiet or QS will start charging more for it when the word gets out. As for the filter location, I'm glad I drive a 2019 Chevy with the 5.3. Easiest oil change of all the full size trucks in my opinion. No suspension parts in the way. Oil filter right next to the drain plug with nothing in the way. GM made the oil changes super easy.
You honestly don't have to change the oil filter every time use a Fram Ultra and use it for 20k miles. I go that long. I used to go 10k with the orange can. Zero issues at 315k.
I just take mine too the dealer. With my own oil and Mopar SRT oil filter. They only charge me 15 Bucks too do it. And you have a record for the extended warranty.
Was wondering is the regular quacker oil good for a 5.7 because i did a oil change last year and then got a ticking noise and misfiring on cylinder 8 its been down for forever trying to get the money up to fix still but im thinking the oil i used wasn't full synthetic.
How did u end up getting factory filter off for first oil change? I'm about to do my first change on my 2021 RAM 1500 and I'm concerned about getting it off. Did u use a tool or just put the death grip on it with your hands and turn? Thanks in advance!!!
Patrick, The factory filter was on there tight. I used a strap wrench to get it off. I was able to turn it a little at a time, as there was so little room for the wrench, until the filter was loose enough to be able to turn it by hand. Go to Amazon and search strap wrench. It is a plastic handle with a rubber strap. I hope that helps. Thanks for the comment.
I used channel locks coming from underneath, grabbing the base (thickest metal) and twisting. Always does the trick when people leave the same oil filter on their cars for 70k miles...
@@5beesgarage it's literally at like a 45 degree upward angle, and you have to turn your wheel all the way to the left and reach through the wheel well. you also have to take off the skid plate every single time. it's horrible. i'm surprised no one has created like a 3d printed thing to put around the ram's filter so the oil can flow into a catch can or something. i just bought a 21 RAM a few months ago and am about to change the oil...
I use this helps out. Oh so you’re right about the orange filter if they can do a good job they won’t be selling them so they must be doing a good job building them
Yeah I think oil filter is the most stupidest place to put one after you’re done with your oil change it’ll drip for like seven weeks. I’ve been using Pennzoil platinum Since I purchased a truck New ..50,000 miles later still has the same oil pressure he did when I was driving home from the dealership. Even at idle with the engine and operating temperature.
@@5beesgarage Thanks for the video! Just what I needed to see what I'm gonna be getting into. I can't believe where that oil filter is... I got about 2200 miles on my truck and I'm wondering should I change it now or is it good for a while? Also did you need an oil filter wrench to get the original out? I have read that it's a real pita to get off...
Ive used a large ziploc bag and put it over the filter and un-twisted the filter half way and let the oil drip out into the bag…Little extra strep but still annoying
If you are going to make self help vids, then you should list data - such as drain plug size, torque spec, filter model number, oil type, etc. Too many people making vids that can't think of common sense items.
Thank you for the comment. Is it the creator doesn't have common sense or is it the consumer that is lacking? I make videos of what i am doing, not necessarily a how to. I am a creator not a teacher.
The air damper underneath the front bumper that comes down when you reach speed has a motor on it that's right underneath the oil filter... A pain in the ass....
ALWAYS USE A CHEAP 5W30 BRAND TO FLUSH OUT OLD OIL BEFORSTEN INSTALLING PLUG BACK….PLUS EVERYONE KNOWS TO USE THE GALLON BAG TRICK TO CATCH ALL THE OIL FROM THE FILTER…..
Doesn’t matter how much you change Fram oil filters the problem is they have a tendency to clog up and when that happens and you don’t know it you can fry your motor do your research
For 1. Quit using Fram oil filters. They are the worst oil filters you can ever use. 2. Buy yourself an oil filter relocation kit it’s worth every penny..
