Thanks for the reaction video. Is this new S1000R billed as a 2021 model or 2022? I've gone to a few BMW dealerships here in the Western US and they have the current model as a 2021 model. The new model does look like a R1250R (from the side at least). I guess the longish new TFT from the RT will be eventually percolating down to the rest of the line up (good bye Navigators V and VI!).
Good question, the answer depends where you live. You're in the US, so they'll call it the 2022 model, but in most other places like Europe it'll be called the 2021 model. I don't know why they do it to be honest (they did the exact same thing with the new S1000RR in 2019, calling it the 2020 model in America) but I'd hazard a guess it's something to do with getting type approval for sale in the country.
Agree with your comment with the R loosing it's individuality.... The front kinda looks like a grom now...... but I'm still picking mine up tomorrow...........and will put on the big round brake lights from a Harley for more rear visibility..😀
@@TrooperTed Thanks- I had to rewrite this since my test ride was limited to 30 min and concentrated on the ergos to see if I could live with it.. during my test ride ... the handling really stood out.. almost telepathic, really light inputs and she was eager to comply and stayed true from tip in to rolling out (road mode) ... enjoyable to say the least and immediately felt comfortable with its ride manners as if I've owned this bike for a couple of years. On the power side I didn't really pay to much attention but the mid range did seem lazy? And didn't explore the upper limits to much (3 miles on the clock) but I'm sure it will be fine for me (I don't track) Anyway I feel it's a really good road, hooli bike- Dr jekyll Mr Hyde kind of ride with cruise and heated grips to ease your long slab work to get to the "good roads" This old man will need to get the bars closer and pegs lowered a touch to tolerate extended rises.
Not sure I'm a fan of the maintenance-free chain. There's a lot to be said for 'having' to regularly look at your bike. Checking and cleaning the chain gets you into positions on the bike that makes you look at other things like the shock or brakes that you may catch something to fix.
@@paulcreevey9168 an excellent point, I was cleaning my ZX10R years ago when I noticed the subframe bolts had somehow worked themselves loose, wouldn't have spotted it otherwise...
Got my order in. Showing Wk19 delivery. Although I agree with your point about the front end. It’s growing on me and I look forward to using the LED light as the old one is shocking when coming home after a late bike night. When speced up the price is very close to the RR, but still feel the R is better suited to me and the road.
@@TrooperTed went for the M spec with TPMS and screen. Went for screen as it looks like you get the 3 point mount and when after market ones arrive I will prob swap. Shame no English real world reviews yet but Covid strikes again.
We need more content from TrooperTed! I thought this was a great piece. I am not entirely sure that I will be in the market for this particular bike, but it looks like a lot of thought has gone into it! I do like the blue Ironman face aluminium cover on the seat lock. BMW do a lot of accessories very well, but at the price of the bike should some of the accessories not be standard?? I also wonder what would happen if you were to attach a BMW final drive (shaft drive) to their inline four engine?? I suspect a large metal explosion could be imminent!! :)
Good point, also worth asking is it copying when you're following a design trend? Is it functional or aesthetic? BMW wouldn't be the first to be guilty of the former, remember 2003 when Honda released the 600 & 1000 RR's with underseat pipes? Followed closely by Kawasaki with the C1H Ninja's? Arguably you could say they were all ripping off the Ducatis, who had made underseat pipes cool in the first place! 😄
@@TrooperTed I am in two minds about changing to the new one. Currently have a 2018 s1000r with 2 years warranty remaining. I like the new one but not as much as my current. I think they have cheaped out a bit on the new one. Some of the finishes don’t seem to be as good. Like the forks not been anodised. No akrapovic exhaust. No Brembos. Don’t care for the tft display it’s outdated technology already. Really need to see it in person to be fully decided though
@@buster332 then I think you're in the ideal position as you're under no pressure to change, which means you can wait for the real world reviews to come out, then go see it in the flesh/test ride it with no commitment. Just on the brakes, I was a bit skeptical of the BMW branded Hayes stoppers when they came out on the R1250GS two years ago, but I have to admit, I leaned quite hard on them repeatedly & they stood up to the test. I know they don't have the gold bling factor the Brembos on our current R's have, but as far as performance goes, I couldn't fault them on the road. Hopefully get to put them to the test on track once things open back up.
@@buster332 in the meantime, it you're looking for something to do to improve your Gen 2, check out the ECU flash video we did with MotoTuning, made a great bike even better IMO. Give Gary a ring and tell him I sent you his way 👍
