The PSP was basically my only multimedia device until I got an iPod Touch. I remember the days when I use to stand outside for hours just using the neighbor's Wifi.
I hope this will be just the beginning of mods for PSP. This console was so ahead of the time and it needs more love in retro community, given that is runs all major emulators smoothly and has great resolution for retro games.
Honestly the screen and the thumbstick were the worst parts of the psp and the moding comunity fixed both. They also fixed wifi by adding better antena and better speakers. Bigger battery and msd adapter as well . Some went ahead and even replaced the optical drive with various mods and added LEDs to the switches ... another cool mod was a second analogue stick ... the moding comunity for psp was huge.
@@DoubleU555 Stay away from "official" batteries, they are either recirculated old (dead) stock or a case swapped chinesium battery. I just bought an "official" one that wouldn't even hold a charge.
It's such a great system. I bought a Japanese PSP 2000 in Piano White for around 90 bucks. Talk about a good deal. It is such a fun little handheld and there's so many good titles to choose from on it.
I would love to see this console get the Gameboy treatment. Shell mods, bigger battery, USB-C, etc. ESPECIALLY an aluminum shell. An aluminum PSP with the UMD drive removed in favor of a large battery would be epic.
I have yet to see a high quality shel, but there are people who remove the UMD drive, and install a huge Lipo pack. I think it is only a matter of time though with the ease of Homebrew in these things.
I've had a PSP since launch in 2005, I've always loved it, upgraded to a 2001 when they came arround for external display option. Later got a PSPgo just for the heck of it. My 1001 is still my favorite as the thickness of the system made for a more comfortable grip. I wish the Vita had been taken more seriously. :(
Mods for PSP (And PSP Go) in this channel would be amazing! I would love to watch you on the quest for the perfect PSO Go Mod (MicroSD instead of M2 Card, bigger battery etc..). Great job as Always!
Yo dawg I heard you like Mods so we modded your Vita to run PSP games via the Adrenaline Emulator. Better Screen, better controls, better feel in your hand. No pixle bleed, because the PSP software was never designed to run an IPS Screen in the first place.
@@shadowtheimpure also a PSVita doesn't play UMD if you have them lying around. I know you can just pirate a digital copy but it's just not the same vibe haha.
@@DarrinLin No it just plays all the *.iso's, and *.cso's, and has a better Screen than the PSP ever had. The fact that you can play the Vita for more than 15 minutes with out your hands cramping up, on you is also a plus point. It might be 'Wasteful" but, I still would not go back to the PSP from having had a Vita.
I have a launch day PSP 1000 which is in mint condition so I will be keeping it stock - but I have to respect that people are making mods for it, and I love how nicely it drops in.
@@AshLordCurry Based. Modded Vitas can even internally render PSP games in native resolution (double the PSP resolution) and some games have patches for dual analog controls. I haven’t used my PSP since I got my Vita as there’s no reason for me to go back to the PSP with the Vita being an objectively better experience.
@@perpetualcollapse Vita can't render PSP games in better resolution. There are some patches /plugins that can do it. But it's like for like 12 games only.
@@perpetualcollapse It is also no small matter that the Vita being slightly fatter, and wider, is also easier to play on for more than 20 minutes without to your hands cramping up on you.
Interesting mod for the 1000 model, brings it in line with the 2000 screen wise. The PSP will stay my favorite console, even did the 2nd analog mod to it. I love my Vita (and still use it) but I'm still mad at Sony for abandoning it. My top 4 PSP games: -MGS : Peace Walker -FFVII : Crisis Core -Final Fantasy Dissidia Duodecim -Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
This is certainly neat if you have a damaged screen, but I think the PSP's flaws are almost everything but the screen. The games loading very slowly and the whole system vibrating because of the terrible disc format. The circle pad being way too low making longer play sessions very uncomfortable. I really don't think this system aged well. The Vita did everything mostly right, but didn't sell, a shame really. Good video as always though, Tito.
exactly. him talking about ghosting constantly makes me laugh cause nobody cared back then. this is dated tech and needs to be seen as such. psp couldn't even load RU-vid lol it's a ancient.
The PSP was my first MP3 player, online gaming experience, and WiFi device at all for that matter. You have to remember that the PSP launched in between the PS2 and PS3. This was the first we saw of the now ubiquitous XMB cross menu bar. The PSP was so far ahead of its time that it still feels modern today.
That's awesome. I saw a few videos for this mod but I can only feel comfortable modding something if Macho Nacho has a video on it. I appreciate how easy it is to follow your process.
Getting rid of the ghosting is amazing. I really wish they'd release a PSP 2000 kit for this IPS. While it's not a very popular mod, I'd definitely do it to my PSP simply for GTA Vice City stories. Getting rid of the ghosting on there would be fantastic.
My favorite portable console ever. It was before smartphones were a thing, so it was my mp3/podcast player, portable video device, internet browser, gaming device, retro game emulator. Great memories!
@H N TN panels suck at everything at TN panel is the orignal panel for the psp. IPS has better colors and black levels, VA has better black levels but lesser colors. And than you have oled with supurb black levels and nice colors. Dont spout bs plz.
I often think about doing this modification but then I modified my Vita to have all the PSP games I want on it using Adrenaline. Combine that with the VitaBright plugin to go beyond max brightness on that OLED display, and games look downright gorgeous on it. Great viewing angles, super rich OLED colors, very bright, and the pixel response times are great since it's an OLED panel. Little to no ghosting is noticeable. It's great.
@@ineedandrenaline Except I swapped in a brand new display over the pandemic (which are easy and cheap to swap out) so even if that happens to my display, it won't be for many years. Nice try though 💀
@@ineedandrenaline I have over 6 PSP's and owned/fixed many more in the past. Many have either had their backlight go out entirely, had the glue from their backlight stain the lcd or developed dead pixels. None of these devices are "built to last" They're portable devices. They all die eventually. You have to maintain them. Meanwhile you can continue playing on a dim LCD that has a ton of ghosting. I will continue on my OLED for more years to come.
I had my first PSP back in 2011 and yes, it is 1001 model like yours. They said 3000 models were better but I noticed that the performance is better than 3000 like playing God Eater Burst, Ace Combat X, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, NFS Carbon Own The City, SOCOM1-3, Parasite Eve The 3rd Birthday, Gran Turismo and more. So much fun while multiplaying with my classmates with their 2000 and 3000 model ver. Last time I played was mid 2016 before I send it to a friend of mine. So much nostalgia :')
Are you planning on covering the gbaHD? It’s basically a diy GBA Consolizer. I think that would go really well with your channel and I haven’t seen it get almost any coverage.
The idea of changing a damaged PSP screen with this IPS Mod is neat, but frankly I'd never do it in any other circumstance (I 100% agree with your bottom line). I've never considered the PSP screen ghosting a huge problem, it's noticeable but not horrible, and if I'm not mistaken, the Slim model has a better screen anyways; but the deal breaker for me is that a modded PSVita with Adrenaline turns the Vita into the best PSP ever, with a gorgeous and bigger new screen - no matter if we're talking about Oled or the LCD of the Vita slim, they're both fantastic. Thanks for the video, very informative and very well shot! 🤝
Man, I loved my OG PSP. I sunk so much time into games like the MGS series, Ace Combat and so on. But the one game that springs to mind when I think of my old PSP is Innocent Life. I'd never played a harvest moon game before or since, but that one just took me. I remember playing until the early hours of the morning and taking my PSP to school to carry on playing on breaks. Amazing!
Dudddddde. The PSP had a bunch of my favorite games! Dead Head Fred, Twisted Metal, LocoRoco, Flow, Wipeout Pure, Medievil, Death Jr just to name a few. Awesome work!
I actually like the screen of the 3000, but the body itself feels cheap. I feel like keeping the hard plastic and bulky body of the 1000 paired with the screen of the 3000 would've been perfect.
@@MegaDrain I hate the 3000's screen. When you are in the PSP's XMB and you scroll very fast you can see the scanline effect. Once you notice it then you just see it everywhere in gameplay.
I loved my PSP, I was always big into the homebrew scene. Remember modding batteries to hack the PSP, how the 1000s had an IR blaster so it could act as a TV remote. Then the 2000s came out with component and composite out. Almost a decade later I picked up the 3000 and hated its screen. Briefly played with the "Go" with its awful proprietary memory which would carry over to the Vita and be its death knell. What a great system, which like the Vita was treated terribly by Sony.
I had a friend in elementary who had one and I was so jealous, I've always wanted one but they were so pricy back in the day and over time other things took their place. I should pick one up at some point.
Just finished this mod, I’m happy with the result. Those points to bridge are insanely small! Even with a microscope and tweezers it was pretty delicate.
The silver screws under the battery hold the bracket that holds the lcd so when you're removing just the front faceplate you don't need to remove the 2 silver screws under the battery and you really shouldn't because if you leave them in it makes it easier to get the screens in and out.
If there was an IPS for the psp 3000 then it would be the best. As for the 1000 the lack of Ram and the recess Dpad and buttons makes it not worth the effort IMO.
@@matthewjohnson1891 then again in the case of emulators most struggle playing at 44khz and the speaker design on the lower side it doesn't go much in their favor imo.
Dude, you also did an iPod Gameboy? o-O I've not seen anyone else talk about that modification, good to see a fellow modder of many regards! Still need to get my hands on a PSP, I've got many projects in mind. Excellent video, keep up the good work!
I loved the PSP. My friend and I both had one in High School and we'd skip class and play Need For Speed Underground via LAN. The thing just felt so ahead of it's time, and "premium". I only had a few games, and I think the only movies I had were Spider-Man 2 and Resident Evil 2. I was able to download anything else. Also, was cool being able to upload my original content like skate vids or stunts to the PSP and share them at school. I subbed to your channel cuz all the vids you make are dope and bring back good memories. Def gonna follow a few guides.
My favourite PSP game is DJ Max 2, still own a PSP for the sole purpose of playing that game. A hidden gem if you love rhythm games. Honestly haven't found a better rhythm game.
7:47 I don't know if it's due to my phone's AMOLED screen but isn't the IPS option tinted heavily green? I'd like to keep the colours as close as possible to the original vision of the game designers.
Not at all just your phone, I saw this too and it really made me question the differences. Seeing Macho reply and say it's from his camera, still makes me question how..... I just don't see how it isn't a real issue, no attack. I am just seriously curious.
if you are unsure how much ghosting their is if any, just try a emulated retro shooter or even a 2d fighter. I remember i couldn't play any fast reaction demanding games at all with it. PSP GO was the way for me. The one and only small real powerful pocket console ever. My favs were the FF 4 remake, Valkyrie profile, FF7 on the go (hack) and all my emulated crap. My most fun experience was probably visiting a friend at his job linking our PSP via Bluetooth with sound out to my car's audio system to hear SFA3 hadokens on my car's doors.
Love this PSP content! I left my PSP plugged in when I was charging and playing and accidently burned in an image into the screen. I'm excited on seeing a fix. Thanks Tito! P.S. This is the 1000th comment. Where's my cookie?! Haha 😆
I just got a PSP 3001 with some games for a steal of a price. Personally I don't have any issues with it and the mod doesn't apply to my system but I really like watching these mods anyway.
I would love to see a battery mod. Original batteries no longer exist, and those fake batteries with power that don't reach a fraction of what is advertised are horrible. Amazing video as always
I saw a battery mod where someone took the circuit board out of an original psp battery and soldered it to a GPD Win battery. Wild mod, not sure where the video is.
It was so frustrating playing the PSP on trips because of the dim screen. I've still got three PSP 1001 models. It's such a capable handheld, but I mostly use my Vita or my spare S21 phone w/ a controller for portable gaming.
I recently picked up a PSP-1001 with the intention of fixing it, as I hadn't owned one since back in 2009. The eBay seller listed it as broken, but they clearly didn't test it because it worked fine and even had a game still in it. I can't see myself doing this mod, unless as you mentioned, the screen gets dead pixels at some point. But either way, I like the brighter screen and somewhat reduced ghosting. It's cool to know that down the line, if my PSP screen goes belly-up, there are essentially modular, drop-in replacements for a reasonable price. Personal PSP favorites are Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow, Daxter, GripShift, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions -- but only after it's modded and patched to fix the dreadful slowdown issues.
Thanks for the comment! Totally agree, not an absolutely necessary mod, but it’s a great option if you need it. Those sound like great games! I still need to get FF tactics for the psp. Cheers buddy!
I always had a soft spot for 300: March to Glory - such an underrated game. I’m glad you said this isn’t worth doing, I bought a brand new one last year for a steal and will keep it original.
To say those contacts to bridge together are tiny is an understatement!! I finally gave up and just put the screen in to see what would or would not happen. Everything seems to be working just fine. I do notice my time and date are ever so touching the top of the screen now, but other then that it’s all good. What issue is overcome by touching those points together?
This video is almost 3 years old but nowadays you can get these IPS kits for about $25. At that price, it's a no-brainer for anyone who has a PSP 1000.
My favorit game was metal gear peace walker i cant say the hours i passed playing that game in house on vacations, trains, when i was with Family on trips it was a masterpiece.
Crazy I have just bought 3 PSPs in the last 2 months! None are a 1000 though. I always thought the 2 and 3000 alleviated the ghosting issue of the original. I could be mistaken. Great video.
Still play my PSP from time to time. Some of my favorite games would have to be God of War Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus, Star Ocean First Departure and Second Evolution, Killzone Liberation, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Star Wars Renegade Squadron, Patapon lots actually haha oh and the UMD movies love collecting those too. Spider-Man 1 and 2 along with T2, The Matrix and more. Just kicked my nostalgia in high gear.
As a huge handheld fan I bought the PSP on release day... with the money I earned as a bartender xD I got it bundled with the Spiderman movie. Very impressive back then as I grew up with the original Gameboy and Gamegear ☺ There are so many great games- I enjoy Smackdown vs RAW 2006, Me&My Katamari, Locoroco and Fight Night R3. I also have the Vita but honestly, built wise I prefer the psp1000. It feels so much more solid and the buttons are big and have a nice "click". I only disliked the dpad as I dont like its separated design. But I fixed it with a stick on crosspad.
2:32 Did Tito just said Vita PSP? Anyways, I came here from MVG's latest PSP video where he upgraded the screen, then came here for the install method :)
I've been curious about this mod for a while now, but next to nobody's talking about it. I always found the ghosting on my PSP-1000 to be pretty bad. It's not refresh rate. The display is 60hz, and some games like Wipeout Pulse actually do display at a full 60fps. Rather it's an issue with response time. How fast each pixel can cycle through its colours. That's what causes the ghosting. Colours can't shift fast enough to match how quickly the screen is processing the image. So you get this after image. Sony largely corrected the issue by the PSP-3000. So that'd be the model I'd get if I were just getting into PSP collecting. Worth noting that an IPS display will also provide far better viewing angles and colour accuracy compared to what's in the PSP-1000. When it comes to this particular mod, yeah, I would need help with the soldering bit.
I remember liking the psp so much i thought the ghosting is just something that comes with it because back then even that garbage screen was really good comparatively to anything.
Thanks to this (and MVG's) video I worked up the courage to do finally this and my PSP now looks amazing! Evidently, however, there are four different MB versions for the PSP-1000 and it's just my luck I got the one with the smallest PINPOINT soldering points. Fortunately I didn't screw anything up... at least I hope so! Thanks for this video!
If you slow the running at 8:00 to 0.25x, you can really see the difference in the ghosting when running past the windows in the buildings.. its insanely better. The original is horrible while the new is actually fully viewable, just low framerate. Full detail. Fantastic. God the ghosting was miserable even day 1, but this is an amazing console and the switch doesnt feel like much of an upgrade on the homebrew side
Such a great handheld for the time. I got this handheld for the same reason I got the original playstation, Final Fantasy VII. Crisis Core on the PsP obviously. The fact that the Final Fantasy Dissidia series was on it was just another perk
Thumbs up to Tito. I have all the psp series but nothing compares to the heft and sturdyness from the 1k edition. Also the fact that the glas (well plastic...) From the screen and the surounding plastic is one peace was awesome. Sadly there are hardly any decent frontplates for this. I kinda wished boxypixel would give it some love. My favourite game on the psp was metal gear solid acid strangly. It wasnt that great of a gzme but the graphics and tactics kept me playing it. Same goes for lumines. I totaly mastered that game! Great production value as always tito! Ps: what would also be good as a video is: aftermarket battery comparisson. With all the original batterys going bad and all
In the side by side comparison, the IPS screen had a green tinge to it. Did you notice the same with other games? If so, I would say trading accurate color for higher brightness is a no-go for me.
I still have a 3001. Bought it in 09 I believe. I dont remember these ghosting issues. Only thing wrong is the battery started leaking and swelled. So it's an outlet portable now.
I love my psp 1000. When i was a kid i thought the psp was THE coolest gaming device ever. I really enjoyed the monster hunter games, ratchet and clank and the gta games
i like more of older screen, because for me ghosting is a cool effect that have for lower resolution screens, and looks perfect in ps1 games (My opinion)
