regarding the front sprocket size difference - I don't think that you can say the 32T on the Status is worse for climbing than the 30T on the Stumpjumper - after all, the rear wheels are different sizes - the Status' smaller rear wheel effectively lowers the gearing compared to the Stumpy

30t vs 32t chainring is geared for the mechanical advantage of the rear wheel size 29 vs 27

I bought a 23 Status 140 and have been XC racing it. It was the only bike the shop recommended for me since i was 305 pounds at the start of the year. Im now down to 272, and loving biking. I wish the status had a 29" rear for my riding but it was a great sale when i got it for 2300 USD.

I have the 160 Status. A big difference is that the long wheel base is countered by the mullet. Wicked turn in with the mullet. Nice slack stable bike that is still handy on tighter techy stuff. Preferred it over the Enduro if not into racing. Demoed them both, Enduro is faster up and down, but it was the Status that made me smile the most. Dropped a GRIP2 in the fork, cheap upgrade that makes a massive difference. Other bike is a 2018 Kenevo. Needed a lighter weight play bike.

My Staus Loves to jump and with the mullet set up feels more downhillish. When I bought it it was explained to me to be a park bike. It is great for that. I found with the long top tube it is harder to climb. I have A Stumpjumper alloy on the way I cant wait to compare. Thanks for the review.

Uhm 32 vs 30T Chainring: You have to consider that there are also diffrent wheelsizes in the rear.. There is about 5-6% difference between the outer circumference of 27.5" to 29" Wheel and 2 teeth are that percentage. Torque will only transfer to the wheel if the cassete is turning clockwise with the wheel..meaning a 29" wheel turns 5-6% percent slower at the same ground speed..hence the smaller chainring. Turning the crank with the same frequency on both bikes gives you Roughly the same maintained speed over ground.
@SnootchieBootchies27

I wouldn't say the Status is the same intended use ase the stumpy. It's definitely for people who are more about jumping and playing around than all-out speed. And the Status is just generally more downhill oriented.
@yipribadi

On chain ring observation, the 32T on the Status compensates for smaller 27.5 rear wheel compared to the 30T on the Stumpy with 29" rear wheel.

Thank you for your comparison. I also started on the Status 160 but felt it was to much travel for the riding around my area, flow with some steeps and technical. I looked at the Stumpy but decided on the 140 Status. Have you been able to get out on your 140 and how do you like it compared with the 160?
@Mark-gq5vl

The 140 does pedal much better and is more suited to my terrain vs the 160. I was able to track down a Levo SL and I have been putting the most amount of miles on it though.

I’ve recently sold a 2020 status 160 and bought a 2021 Stumpjumper comp alloy. The status was an absolute pig to pedal on any surface as the rear shock soaked up all the energy. With the correct PSI the sag was still enough to cause a lot of pedal strikes. In comparison the SJ has a sleeker looking frame and definitely a lot more pedal efficient than the 160. I considered getting a 140 status, but I’d imagine there wouldn’t be a night a day difference. I don’t ride down hill tracks, mostly single track with technical rocky climbs and tree roots. The SJ makes more sense.

Any updated opinion a year later and maybe you've ridden the Status for a year. The lack of UDH is a bit sad on the Status. Also, not sure Deity grips are any better than Specialized house grips.. there's so much intermixing of production vs branding, maybe even the same manufacturer. Most likely both are pretty nice and made in Taiwan, which is good.

Thanks for the comparison. I would be curious to know if the Status 140 pedals any better than the Status 160, otherwise what’s the point of the shorter travel version? Btw a 32 tooth chainring turning a 27.5” wheel provides very similar gearing to a 30 tooth chainring turning a 29” wheel (all else being equal).

Hey quick questions. I'm 6ft7 and 260 with motocross and bmx background. I like the status bc of the mullet and playfulness and especially better components but it only goes up to a s5 vs the sj that goes to s6. What do you think the real size difference is or would u recommend between the s5 status and the s6 sj?
@ryanautomator5760
@ryanautomator5760 2 года назад
At your height I'd consider an Stumpjumper Evo comp alloy or carbon if you ride up hill sometimes. The Status is like a BMX bike for someone your size. If you want a trail bike consider the Evo in S6. I'm 6'3 230lbs and I've owned the Stumpy Evo Comp Carbon and it was just a bit too long but I could actually climb up steep hills without it looping out on me I also had way more traction in tight corners with the long wheelbase. One drawback of Specialized suspension it's it gets overwhelmed by heavy riders pretty quickly and can eat rear shocks pretty quickly if your and aggressive rider.

How's the 140 treating yah now? I'm building frame up right now. I'm building mullet close to factory spec. If I do feel I want a zippy climber I'm going to throw a 160 27.5 fork or 150 29r and run 27.5 front to back with nicer carbon wheels. Which makes this pretty close to something like the transition scout.

I ran the 140 for a couple of months last season. Was very active on climbs, but more manageable than the 160. Mullet will be a good mix, don't skimp on the rear shock. I suspect a float X or new RS would help a lot with the climbing if tuned properly.

@FoundHarpy438
@FoundHarpy438 5 месяцев назад
@@big_bird8597 I ended up getting the status. Personally I love it and don’t regret it at all. I don’t think it climbs as terribly as people say, but I’ve also never rode any super efficient climbing bikes, so probably can’t compare it to something else very well. It’s a great bike if you want something that will get you up the hill and then allow you to shred down whatever you want. It would definitely be less efficient going up compared to your hard tail, so I would say if that matters to you definitely go for something more like a stumpy. TLDR: if you want a bike that will get you up hill just fine, but not the most efficient, and you want the most downhill capability you can get, go with the status. If you want a bike a similar to your hard tail when going up and are willing to sacrifice a little downhill performance, then I’d go with the stumpy. Hope this helps!
