This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Subaru Forester. Subaru puts the "U" in SUV with an incredible amount of utility for all passengers. The very popular Forester falls between the Subaru Crosstrek and the larger three-row Ascent. It comes standard with AWD and EyeSight driver assist technology which has been found to reduce rear-end crashes with injuries by up to 85%. It has 220 mm of ground clearance for good off-road capability and winter driving conditions.The spacious and versatile Forester has more passenger room than the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. It offers a generous cargo area with 76.1 cubic feet of cargo volume. The Forester has a carved front fascia and hawk-eye shaped LED headlights along with angular LED accent lights. This Subaru comes with six trims in Canada and five in the US. Some standard features include, LED headlights, 17” wheels, 18” are standard on higher trims. We are testing the sport model with orange accents throughout the exterior and roof rack tie-down points for added versatility and cargo carrying capability. A panoramic sunroof and a power tailgate is standard on the Touring trim in Canada. A panoramic sunroof is standard on the Premium trim in the US, but to get the power tailgate you need to add a package to this trim for $1,095 USD. Overall cargo space goes to the Forester and RAV4, most cargo space behind the 2nd row Tucson with the RAV4 in second. Second row seat space with almost 2 inches more than the Forester goes to the Tucson and the RAV4 having the least. There is a 1.5 inch difference between the Forester and the RAV4 for second row legroom. The Escape comes in second behind the Tucson with a half inch less. The Forester competes against the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and the Honda CRV. They all offer plenty of interior space for a family but the winner in overall cargo space goes to the Forester, but the new Tucson offers the most cargo space behind the second row. The winner for most second row legroom goes to the Tucson, it has almost 2 inches more room than the Forester with the RAV4 having the least. There is a 1.5” difference between the Forester and the RAV4 in the second row.
The Forester has a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. It gets 9L/100 km, 26 MPG city, 7.2L/100km highway, 33 MPG highway and can tow up to 1500 pounds.

We just ordered our Forester Sport and hope to have it by the end of next month. It's our first time buying a Subaru. We have always had the bigger SUV's but decided to think more practical and get the Forster. We researched other makes and models and the Forester crossed off all of our boxes.

Best auto cruise control on the market. And I find CVT’s work better w/ smart cruise controls - no constant gear hunting. I’m surprised that most car reviews never talk about the performance of smart cruise control systems as good ones can really enhance the enjoyment and convenience of a car.

Our 2012 had a cracked windshield (so did prior 2009 Legacy) and had oil consumption problems. It was basically a tin box on the highway and needed to crank the radio to hear it over the road noise. It was needing a new engine rebuild at 20K miles so we traded it on a 2015 GMC Terrain and never looked back.

I came from very powerful sedans and SUV's, at first I said OMG what I have I done, I thought what a mistake, after I got over not having 350Hp I get along very well and so spacious inside. I still think of this as a tall wagon. I love the large windows. At one time, many cars had large picture windows like this vehicle but windows have shrunk. This is kind of a throwback. Although it has to look like a crossover it still has a kind of tall-wagon shape like it always has. It's gotten too big like many other cars. This and the Outback, maybe even more the Outback, are wagons. That's not a bad word, "wagon." This is solid. I've always liked the Forester.

I'm trying but I can't find a better swiss knife than this. Subaru did get Toyota's hybrid into their Crosstrek in 2019. Real world MPG results were devastating. Not many places sell this hybrid option as well. It is not that easy to carry over technology from one OEM to another. Has to design the platform from the ground up & that is way too expensive for Subaru.

I still have my 2010 Manual 2.5 Forester and last year we got a 2020 model as well. It's not an "exciting" car as such, and, I wish there was a manual option or a snappier feeling transmission than the CVT but it was still the best SUV for us. The combination of practical space and great vision due the the squarer body style. The fact that it has some real ground clearance compared to many of its competitors and an all wheel drive system that really does offer something if you go off tarmac make it a compelling package for someone who is not just wanting tall urban transport. Oh and in Australia at least you get a proper spare tyre! We towed a small camper trailer 4800klms through Western Australia last year and the car was flawless in all conditions. The only thing I would really like to see is the option of some more power whether it be via a turbo or a gruntier hybrid option.

I have the 2021 Forester Touring. I love it except 4 things. (1) lack of horse power - this is so apparent on highway when you need to bypass as you leave exit and merge with incoming traffic; (2) storage on the driver/passenger is not enough; (3) the seats are very comfortable but the seats are a little shorter, so for those with longer legs they don't feel support; and (4) mileage isn't as good esp if you are making short trips (say u live in the city/suburban with a lot of traffic). Otherwise I am pretty happy and I will certainly buy again! Competitors in the same line are so lack head room & leg rooms, can't beat this. Standard safety features + headlights + unique blind spot detection light placement == good!

I hear Zac's point about those driver assist modes being too much of a nanny; many of those lane departure systems, for example, make the car feel possessed by resisting the input from the driver. More dangerously, some of the automatic emergency braking systems have been reported to stop the car unexpectedly for no apparent reason, sometimes in the middle of the highway! The only two such systems that would be of any value to me would be the blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert systems; I can do without all the rest.

@Bartonovich52
@Bartonovich52 3 года назад
I don’t think so. A home run is volume sales. Subaru already hurts for volume because of their commitment to put AWD in every vehicle they make (except the BR-S).. which makes them more expensive and hurts fuel economy. That’s why Subaru has doubled down on the CVT.. but most of their competition also has CVT. These days a 2.4 turbo is an insanely powerful engine. They have full size trucks with only slightly larger engines. Even the previous generation Forester only had a 2.0 turbo engine as its upper option. Anyone who wants an insanely powerful SUV isn’t going to chose Subaru anything-even with the 2.4. They want a Trackhawk or Durango Hellcat.

Very Good Video--Questions- Need Work Vehicle- Need AWD- 1. Does the Forester have a place on it to attach optional Front and/or Rear Tow Shackles? 2. I thought Subaru changed their CVT from belt system to a chain system years ago ! 3. How bad could CVT be if folks are driving these cars for 10 years and super high milege ? 4. Due to tough heavy duty usage I have the SEALED transmission fluid changed in my other work "sealed" vehicles every 100,000 miles. Know anything about that with Subarus ???? Most Vehicles say sealed UNLESS and list several exceptions.....? Thanks for your good information.

Hi, great review... question, can you turn off those safety warning light/ bell indicators individually? If so would you have to do it every time you start the car? I probably would only want one or two on... sorry if you've already answered this, thanks, Drew

As an everyday car, the Sport is a great option. IMO the Wilderness trim is too much if you're just commuting. Uses more gas and has all that plastic fantastic cladding. But to each their own.

Subaru's marketing department has done a great job at brainwashing people into thinking their "symmetrical AWD" system is the best. However, for off-roading it's average at best plus the CVT is absolutely terrible for off-roading as is continuously cuts power to protect itself.

I don't think people who buy Subarus do much off roading. Im fairly certain they buy it for snow. Especially in the midwest and Northeast and it's price point with AWD certainly helps

I have the 2019 Crosstrek and it is great in snow, ice, and dirt roads. The CVT has never given me any issues, and has never "cut" power doing either of these activities in snow, ice, or dirt roads. Do I "off-road"? No. If I wanted to I wouldn't get a subaru. This car is not made for real off-roading. It's a practical car with some capabilities that help us folks who live in colder climates with bad weather and some dirt roads.
