The Suzuki Ignis is a small SUV that’s well priced and neatly packaged. With its flared arches, bluff nose, and jacked-up stance, there’s no mistaking it for anything other than a radically designed and eye-catching baby SUV. But, should you buy one?

The car is built extremely well and the interior is very well put together. This review is quite disingenuous regarding the internal fixings. I have owned an Ignis (Aus) for 18 months and the interior is strongly fixed, never rattles or shakes and does not feel compromised by price point. This particular reviewer is grossly exaggerating the slight movement of some of the components but you have to tug on things very hard to make them move. Don't be put off by this poor review. Have a look yourself.

just got one over a month ago for wife, replacing her fiat 500. The boot is a lot bigger instantly. hard plastic in cabin but it is common across its' competitors and the price range. we went for the sz5 version and we have no complain at all. being a city car, you can expect it is not that sure footed, given that my daily is a suzuki swift sport. would be great if top spec can include heated and remote folding wing mirrors as standard.

Good day everybody , I would like to send you an experience report about my Suzuki Ignis that I bought about 3 years ago. Actually, my wife fell in love with this car. At the beginning I was a bit sketic because it is so small, but when I took a seat for the first time I was amazed at how much space you have inside. There we come to a point where I can not understand some "test drivers", the interior is as you can expect from a small car, nothing more and nothing less. In the front you sit very comfortably and in the back the space is so that 2 people can feel in good hands there. The trunk, on the other hand, is small, as is the case in a small car. The backrests can be folded 50:50 so that you can also load more luggage, and the hardware store also loses its fear if you want to buy something bulky there is of course only room for 2 people. The interior is equipped with a lot of candy lines ex works, so everyone will find what they are looking for. The plastic that is installed in the interior is of good quality and also well installed, since nothing squeaks and rattles. As for the quality, you can say that everything was clean and tidy. The instruments are all easy to read and attached so that you don't have to look for anything and all functions are self-explanatory. The motor has 90 HP and seems a bit sluggish, for my taste, but it is extremely economical. I do not write the factory information as to consumption, my car consumes an average of 6.5 to 7.5 ltr 100 km in mixed traffic on the highway, I made it to 120 km / h to northern Germany (North Sea) 4.5 ltr / 100 km . This is not a joke I once read and calculated by hand, it was right. I am not satisfied with the trailer load of a maximum permissible total weight of 1000 kg because most caravans require 1200 kg. Well, if you don't need it, you have done it yourself. It is always enough for a small trailer for transport. It is also noteworthy that the car has a hill descent aid and a reduction for somewhat difficult terrain. But I would advise against driving in difficult terrain because the ground clearance is more designed for road use, but the chassis easily copes with a bad dirt road. Of course I bought the All Grip because I think if SUV is really SUV. The maintenance costs are extremely low, the workshop works clean and keeps the promised, such as collection from the inspection. Thanks to the small wheels, you don't have to pay a monthly salary if you need new tires. A great car if you are looking for an everyday SUV. But you have to be aware that it is a small car, otherwise you will not be happy with it. Stay healthy sends many greetings from Germany Klaus-Roger Benuar

how does it do in snow?
@klaus-rogerbenuar3687
@klaus-rogerbenuar3687 3 года назад
@@mmmhhh. I have to admit that I haven't had the opportunity to try Ignis when there is a lot of snow. We haven't had any higher snow depths for 3 years because we have a very warm climate here in Germany in the state of Hesse in southern Hesse, near Frankfurt am Main. We have been wishing for a winter with lots of snow for a long time, but I have relatives who live in Austria. I was told that snow up to a certain height is not a problem. Well, they have to know, because they manage an alpine pasture with rooms and inns. In their experience, the Ignis stayed at a snow depth of 20 cm can still drive, but that is also the highest snow depth that the little car can manage. for heavier snow you have to use a real SUV. The Jimny has almost reached its limit even with snow depths of over 20 cm, although otherwise it is vastly superior to the Ignis in the terrain. The Ignis is a compromise between an SUV and a normal car. You can just drive a bad dirt road, but that's enough for me.

A great and honest review as always. The tone is relaxed and easy to watch. I like how WhatCar reviews are more tailored towards real ownership of the cars, and not nitpicking on some random trim detail, and making a fuss out of it, like some other channels. Great job, Doug! And Rebecca too. About the Ignis: test drove one of these a while ago and found it to be surprisingly agile and nippy for a city car, and the added roominess as compared to its rivals is much welcomed.

Testers always complain about the seats not going low enough, whereas I like to sit as high as possible in a car, and I’m six feet tall. Thank god the ignis gives a commanding driving position. Actually I love the way it looks, and if it had the three cylinder turbo and the dual clutch auto I’d buy it. I hate manuals as I just can’t be bothered any more. At present I have a Vitara S auto and I love that to bits, but the same performance in a smaller package would be even better. The info system is good enough by the way, as long as the volume control is, as on mine, on the wheel. Oh, as for quality, as long as it doesn’t break its first rate as far as I’m concerned, I’ve known enough people with premium cars that go wrong and a faulty car simply is not premium. And it’s not a small SUV, it just a small car, period. I’m sick of all the SUV nonsense. As a small car that’s built high enough to give good visibility and easy access, it’s perfect. Overall, a very good review.

I had the previous generation Ignis. Despite the hard plastics, the interior was very hard wearing and never deteriorated or broke in any way even after 14 years. Squishy interior plastics are no indication of good build quality. Suzuki make very well engineered and rugged little cars, of which I am sure this is one.
@moremoneytips9995
@moremoneytips9995 3 года назад
Yes, Suzukis are super hardy and go on and on. I had a used 2001 Suzuki Alto that I drove for 6 years - from its 11th to 17th year. It always started in all seasons, and got me everywhere reliably and economically. Once it even got me through a badly flooded road that runs over a huge canal that overflowed. Not a drip of flood water got into it. The little car continued working like a quality Swiss watch. What an amazing vehicle!. My current Suzuki SX4 is another gem I cherish that's spacious, refined, economical and reliable :)
@davebassman5339
@davebassman5339 4 года назад
I like hard plastics. They're often harder wearing. I have a 1998 Nissan Micra with a dash that would make most modern reviewers recoil in horror, but it's perfect after all that time. I live in France, and there are loads of examples of the sun causing damage to more "upmarket" soft touch plastics over time. Plus, I don't touch the dash....
@DM-ol9ne

Dave Bass Man what are the reviewers doing touching everything anyway.? Are they making love or something?
@moremoneytips9995
@moremoneytips9995 3 года назад
Exactly! Too many motoring columnists harp about hard plastics in an economy car! There's nothing wrong with hard and durable plastic. Normal persons don't go around touching the plastics of cars!!! Comfort, economy and reliability are FAR more important qualities in cars. I am impressed by its spirited engine, good handling and refreshing design. It's great fun that makes driving anywhere a pleasure :)

Yeah. Just who jumps into a car and immediately starts fondling the dashboard and centre-console? Unless you're trying to prove some point. If you say switchgear feels mushy and the steering wheel is nasty, I get that. But hard plastics under the dashboard? - who gives a Smeg?

Keep up the great reviews folks :). As a swift sport owner, I'm a bit biased for Suzuki, but I'd see this being bought by the older generation as a perfect car for having "4 wheel drive" for less than ideal road/weather conditions. Either way, nippy/practical small cars for the win. While they are at it, bring back the 4 wheel drive dihatsu's and starlet GT's as well please :D

The Ignis is a great car. I've have the top spec model in Aus (GLX) for 18 months - can't fault it. Practical, frugal, refined and zippy. Interestingly, the dual port engine is high compression (12.5:1) so 98 fuel is awesome - much better performance.

I own an Ignis as well, but I live in Southeast Asia Sad the Auto box is awful (not my choice), and the rear suspension is jumpier than a kid on a trampoline. But it's a nice little runner, and it looks way way way better than all of its rivals!
@GregTyson

@@ilya3379 I've never had a jumpy feeling from the rear in mine - I've found it very solid and stable (and I've owned many cars in my 50 + years). I think they're tuned differently in different markets - that's the only explanation I can think of. The light weight of the Ignis makes it a ripper zipping up hills and the new lightweight high tensile steel platform keeps the car nice and rigid. Cheers.

I've lived with this car for 3 years(sz5 4x4), the interior easily wipes clean and still looks like new today, the body roll you mention is not so bad but you are going to get some its 160mm ground clear, the 4x4 is on demand no stopping to push buttons or move levers the traction will brake a slipping wheel hill descent works very well especially in snow, if you wander over the white line without a turn signal on the steering will vibrate and flash on the dash to warn you, collision warning works well when you get the driver who pulls away at a junction then stops, never had any problems in snow at all with standard tyres (which are a pain to find for the 16'' model) its shown 60mpg on the dash on the motorway 50ish round town and only costs me £10 per year road tax, its just hit 3 years old 31/1/20 and cost around £220 for service + mot which I don't think is that bad, you do have to rev it to get it to play but its happy to do so, the hybrid battery is under the passenger seat and is only charged when you let off the gas or ride the brake to slow down then when you pull away the alternator acts as a motor to help the engine simple but it works i'm sure the same motor restarts the engine in the start stop and not the starter motor, on the 4x4 don't think about putting a space saver in the boot its a joke and the car is not too heavy so you do get pushed around a bit from the turbulence from some trucks, 4 adults in it not too bad if you want 5 you bought the wrong car all in all a car I've enjoyed so far.

When I first had mine it was great it would ride over most things but as soon as I put people in the back it would bottom out too easy, Suzuki looked at it and changed the front suspension legs rear shocks and revised bump stops, it now has less roll on corners and you feel the road surface more all good, I have hit a pothole that wouldn't have looked out of place on the moon wow what a noise! But the main thing for me is the car took it, no mark on the rim of wheel no flat tyre and steering still true. It's not an off roader but it is quite tough

I'm assuming that your reference to 'build quality' actually means 'perceived quality of materials', rather than how well cars are built, for Suzuki and other Japanese and South Korean cars are definitely not wanting in relation to the latter.
@1SaG
@1SaG 4 года назад
Being able to wobble around parts that aren't meant to wobble around is "build quality" in my book. They could be made from the finest materials available, but if they're not screwed/clipped together properly, that's poor build quality. You wouldn't be able to move stuff about like that in my MX-5 nor in a VW Up nor in the Lupo I used to drive a few years back. And all three aren't exactly poster-children for high quality surfaces on the interior. But they are/were built properly.

"Perceived" implies that the quality and feel of materials differs from person to person. If a central piece of the console wobbles like a rotten milk tooth, that's not perceived quality, that's bad quality.

Who said anything about a G-class? He was comparing it to the Kia Picanto and VW Up. Don't know about the current Picanto, but in the Up you wouldn't be able to wiggle large chunks of the dash/console around like that and most of the materials used do look and feel a class above its rather low MSRP. It's no secret that the Up is (was :( ) considered the class leader among super-minis - and from my experience, it deserved that title.

Very nice review. Thank you. I'm actually looking for a new car since my old subaru justy g3x got too rusty to go on without massive repairs. That car has a very similar shape. Does someone know how this ignis 4x4 compares to the good old justy g3x? I live in a snowy mountain, so 4x4 is essential for me for driving on snow and some forest roads (no real off-road). Also, I'm a bit sad that this hybrid is very very mild. I wanted something a bit electric for once. What does that mean, in fact? It's the kind that switches to combustion engine above 40 km/h? Or does the combustion engine run all the time?
@AehronKataeb
@AehronKataeb 3 года назад
I use it in a moutain that's snowy for 3 to 5 months a years, it's really great even in the worst of times -handling and performance wise- but it does eat a little more fuel in these conditions, around 6,5 to 7L/100km. It's a mild hybrid, meaning that the electric motor pushes the car when starting and also accelerating, but not while cruising around 100% of the time.

I drove one a while back for a day. Loved the styling. Personally, having also driven the swift I think that's what I'd buy. Similar prices, but a more conventional design that I found more comfortable as the Ignis has an intrusive centre console that my left leg rattled against whilst driving. Yes, it does feel a bit cheap. It's also 14 grand fully equipped with niceties like automatic breaking, all wheel drive, hybrid engine and so on.

Performance reviews useful if done with a full load (use sand bags?). Suzuki Ignis had a problem with suspension, rectified only after I complained about it, new front and rear shock absorbers and different bump stops fitted.

That is the third generation Ignis, and a great design. Pity Suzuki wont bring some of their more wacky Japanese models to Europe like the Lapin and Hustler.

Kieran Martin As Theolin said, the Ignis is solely intended for on-road. If you’re not impressed with the Jimny’s on-road capability, you may want a used 4x4 from something like Jeep.

the Suzuki Ignis does not come with a plastic engine cover - only the Boosterjet engines. The 3 cylinder (turbo) swift gets an engine cover.

@philipscott1128
@philipscott1128 4 года назад
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Cars are still designed with this in mind. The alignment specs, especially caster, will be set up for king pin inclination. This is what gives the steering a self centering action. Its been done for a very long time now

Toyota makes reliable boring car for most part Suzuki well they are reliable but what I know from the past few years is that I find Suzuki is the cute little car😂. It's not a bad thing either. Maybe I'll be using this as a daily driver just for the MPG and for the fun of having a stick shift while having great MPG or KPL (kilometers per liter)

It has also been called a crossover. This is due to the boxy aesthetics, relatively high ride height and available all wheel drive.

Having checked all sorts of reliability-/breakdown-databases on small cars, I can definitively rule out ever buying a Dacia. Doesn't matter that it's cheap or, in the case of the Duster, a class above the Ignis. Sadly, this Suzuki doesn't appear in any of the surveys yet since it hasn't been on the market that long. And its no use looking at other Suzuki models, since the Swift seems to be pretty unreliable, while the Vitara seems to be doing rather well. What I will say about the Ignis is that it seems to be holding its value pretty well for a small, simple car from a not-very-glamorous manufacturer.
