2021 Triumph Trident 660 // First ride review! Is it the perfect first big bike? 🤔

Hey All!!
Firstly, I hope you rowdy bunch are all good 👍
At the beginning of the week, Triumph UK kindly sent me a Trident 660, an absokute thing of BEAUTY 🤩
This is my first impressions of the bike!
Very gutted that all I can really do is take it to work and back but I am hoping that as soon as the lock down lifts, I can take a trident to my local country lanes for some aggressive throttle action! 🙊
Let me know what you think about this addition to the Triumph familia 🇬🇧

This license plate in UK is simply hideous!

the video quality/ production has improved no-end. Not everyone wants a big 1000/1200cc bike, (although the UK market seems to dictate that in particular UK buyers like the the big sports/adventure bikes) - middleweight is about where it is at for me. Good review as always

If you mean the T160 from the seventies my brother had one and on his return to biking it’s a bike he has focussed on. I still think that T160 with the large tank is one beautiful looking bike, and hoped Triumph would have styled this in a similar fashion like Kawasaki have done with the 900RS
@Grahamvfr
@Grahamvfr 3 года назад
@@guyr7351 no I think the guy meant original from the 'reborn ' triumph circa 1991, as he said 27 yrs old. I though he meant the lovely t150/160 at first. Loved those 70s tridents but was into the kawasaki triples then.
@guyr7351

@@Grahamvfr ah the straight line flying machines that allegedly did not like cornering. I didn’t know triumph had used the trident name on anything in between the T150/160 bikes.

Nice review. I own a KTM 390 Duke which is also a great little bike. This doesn't seem much of a step up though as it also runs out of puff as you go up through the gears? Btw you were a bit drowned out by all the lockdown traffic on your walk around.
@UsernameKate
@UsernameKate 3 года назад
Aye you wouldn't think there'd be much traffic during a lockdown lol. No, I thought the GoPro media mod wouldn't pick it up but theres a lesson in there somewhere. Its probably a small step up and I think the gear ratios can be bettered with different size sprockets to get a longer gear, I did that with my SV when I had one and much preferred it!

If you were interested in a Triumph roadster why would you not just get the new Street Triple S? You can restrict it it A2 and then de restrict it later down the line. Like you said who’s gonna buy it? I’m not quite sure many people will.

I am picking mine up Monday 1st March. A comment on beginners bike. I’m 65 had over 25 bikes including three V-Max I find the very light weight and enough power suit me now. Has a huge spread of torque and very good spec for the money. I’m trading in my Bonneville 1200 which is actually 1bhp less and so heavy feels like a tank in comparison looking forward to it. Have added Triumph connectivity and heated grips. Your test was a good first ride test have subscribed see how you get on.

Beat you Stuart! I'm 65 and picked up my 34th bike a couple of months ago, a Honda CMX500 (don't laugh!). Knee joints and ankles not so good so after a lifetime of big cruisers and adventure bikes I have had to down size and get something physically smaller and lighter if I'm to continue riding. The CMX is so much FUN I can't believe it! Ride safe mate.

Great review Kate, I like that you mention your inseam measurement as that's more important than height. I'm 5'9" with a 27" inseam so I struggle even getting on a lot of modern bikes that seem to have got taller than bikes of my youth. Thanks for that as it's a big help when considering a bike and there mu0cd66be451st be plenty of short legged riders out there. 👍

It looked a bit tall for her TBO, I’ve got a 27” inside leg and my Triumph Street Twin is ideal for me as it’s got a really low seat height. Even I can put both feet down, I’d wouldn’t contemplate owning a bike where I couldn’t. Best regards.

Its a smart looking little bike, I like the fact they have gone for the Triple Engine instead of the Parallel Twins as used in the T120 etc. (Nothing wrong with the Twin Engines by the way) Also coming on Michelin Road 5's from the Factory is a Winner, Superb Tyres in my opinion. I know that the Bike isn't really aimed at the Performance/Sports sector but a lot of fun can be had on a Middleweight, Lower Powered Bike and as you said it will be a user friendly Bike for someone wanting to return to Riding after a long Break. Great Review :)

It really is a beautiful bike. I have been looking for a long time at a Royal Enfield Continental GT or the revised Moto Guzzi V7. My first bike was a standard Kawasaki 750 back in the day. That bike could do everything. This new 660 seems so capable for a short trip across town or for going on a tour for the weekend. I know the boys at TEC are already looking seriously at the things they can do for this motorcycle. So I'm keen to see what type of touring accessories will be available in the near future. I'm not really an adventure bike rider and not really a hyper bike rider. I just really want a good standard motorcycle that can do everything like that Kawasaki of mine used to do. I think Triumph has nailed it with this bike. By the way, great review. I am now a subscriber. 😊😊😊🌹🌹🌹

Anyone assuming that this is a bike for shorter people is very much mistaken. This is a very tall bike. I’m 5’7”, 32” inseam and I tippy toe mine. The suspension is extremely stiff even on the softest preload setting so it does not compress much when you sit on it. Do yourself a favor if you have one of these- change out the front sprocket to a 17-tooth. It makes 1st-4th gears more usable. It’s geared too low from the factory. Best $12 mod you can do to it.

It's an all-rounder like the old-style UJMs - for me that's a plus, as is the under stressed motor; and I really like the look. For me (old guy, returning rider) 80 HP is plenty especially with the torque curve and broad spread of power. It also fits my budget. What's not to like? Great video. Thanks. I find it a bit amusing to hear you remark that 80 HP (on a 400 pound) is an amount that you feel might not benefit from rain mode. Back in 1972 the Kawasaki Z900 had 79HP and weighed about 550 pounds. It was considered a scary over powered bike by many. Just goes to show you that many things are relative. I remember many pundits of the time saying that a bike with over 100 HP was crazy, only super race bikes should be that powerful.

I am really looking at the Trident. I am into minimal bikes without fairings and tons of unnecessary features. My Brother in Law has the $50K Harley that he can watch Movies, CB, cellphone, Sat Nav, Cruise Control, Engine Monitoring, Internet, and Coffee Maker. It is not a Motorcycle, it is more like a well equiped sub compact car with two wheels. I own a Harley Roadster. A subcategory Sportster that is either considered a beginners or girls bike. I bought mine for price (honestly it was the entry level Harley) and I did not want a rolling couch. I would also say the Trident is sort of a "girls" bike and I am a guy. It is thin, has good lines, small, light, powerful enough, not a long giant cruiser. I only have one reservation. I have longer legs although I am 5'10. Are they rearset controls with bottoms of the feet facing backwards? Knee bend extreme? Are taller riders knees above the hips? I am old and knees up high are painful for long rides. I had to customize my Roadster quite a bit for fit and comfort.

Good call comparing the Trident to theXSR. The Trident wins on looks

It looks like a very nice entry level bike. Triumph seems to make bikes that people would actually want to drive, and they also look sweet to boot. My first real road bike was a 675R Daytona and to me the only thing irritating about the ergos is the knee bend. I've noticed that the rearsets on this and the street triple seem to be as aggressive. Is there less knee bend on the Trident?

Nice review Kate I personally think triumph are on to a winner with this bike good for commuting with a 10k service interval and appeals to new riders as well

Stunner of a bike. You ride well shows how much this bike can pull and sound like. Bar end mirrors and very nice exhaust with a nice tail tidy will make this bike even more nicer looking .. great retro styled bike prefer it grey . Great video

In New Zealand the Trident is only available in the reduced-power learners' configuration, and cannot be modified. And the Tiger 850 Sport is not available at all. So, bother.

I just bought the svartpilen 401 do mostly rural roads. It's more fun to ride a smaller cc bike fast than to ride a big cc bike slow. Loving this little bike. That statement there beginner bikes is misleading. Buy what fits your riding.
@UsernameKate
@UsernameKate 3 года назад
Wouldn't say its misleading as it is a cracking beginner bike, but like you say, it's also suitable for many circumstances. It's not just all about power nowadays, so this bike suits alot of different people 👍

Saw one in the Triumph dealers in Essex. Did look tiny but much prettier in the flesh. Could it be the seat is more comfortable with your extra bit of padding thanks to lockdown? Yep me! too never been this heavy and not being able to go to the gym. Never mind, nearly open again!

As a biker for over fifty years I have to say that the trend (is it a trend yet?) towards smaller motorcycles is best for riders and the sport. Yep, when I rode bikes more as a fashion statement then a sport, I went through the bigger is better hubris. Thirty years ago there may have been merit in that . . . but now now.

The bike looks so good, and at that price ots an absolute bargain for a bit of prestige name branding. I would think it'd be a little short for me but I'm sure they'll bring out a higher seat option like so many manufacturers do Great video Kate, top review as usual ❤👍
