crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com Our Yamaha Tenere 700 review! There are plenty of rave reviews around for the Yamaha T7. Sometimes they are so positive I doubt if it's serious review. So I will start with the negatives and end with the positives. The problem is it's hard to find problems to mention in our Yamaha Tenere 700 review. I couldn't find any real known issues. Eventually I focused on the engine which is derived from the MT09 road bike. But it was introduced in 2015 and it seems they worked out the problems years ago. This stands in contrast to all the reported issues on the KTM 790 Adventure, arguably the main competitor. Short riders will still find this quite high compared to the Triumph Tiger 800. And yet riders over six feet will feel quite cramped. Although there's an optional rally seat that sits higher which apparently resolves this. When standing, a lot of taller riders also find the bars too low and add risers, and also roll the bars forward to enlarge the cockpit. If you like to stand, you will want to remove the rubber inserts on the footpegs too. Some more aggressive riders can be a bit disappointed by the lack of real punch from the engine, mentioned in other Yamaha Tenere 700 reviews. The problems with the Yamaha T7 are more around just getting to suit the individual rider. For example, the fixed windscreen means that you will probably get a lot of wind noise once you are taller than around six foot or 182cm. The same with the Yamaha T7 ergonomics. The seat height is 34.4 inches, 83cm. Personally I think this is a matter of taste. Quick take offs will see the front wheel coming up in the first few gears, and it starts singing in the higher revs. And the power delivery is beautiful for offroad riding. Plenty of traction, no surprises, super smooth. Aftermarket specialists claim their ECU remapping can give big power gains, I suspect most owners won't want this. What do we like? The price! This is where the T7 shines. It's significantly cheaper than its main competition, which leaves a few thousand dollars to spend on mods that will easily make it the equal of the other bikes. The Suzuki V-strom 650 is cheaper, but it's really in a different class and lacks the offroad abilities of the T7. What about the weight? Yamaha has done a good job of keeping the weight down for a twin. It's around the same as the KTM 790, and a bit less then the Triumph Tiger 800. And it's lighter than the KLR650 single. It's great to see a twin cylinder that isn't morbidly obese. Riders report dropping weight with these Yamaha Tenere 700 mods. The Yamaha Tenere 700 handling? On road was great fun! Again, there are occasional complaints about the suspension from aggressive riders in Yamaha T7 reviews. And some suspension tuners are saying owners really need to come in and get their bikes setup correctly. I suspect the vast majority of riders will find it is just fine as is. Many owners just ramp up the springload on the rear and find that's all they need to do. Aggressive riders may want to get some work done. The Yamaha T7 plush suspension will start to bottom out if you go hard. There were Yamaha Tenere 700 reviews of the early T7 models being snatchy at low revs, and remapping the ECU solved this. There were no problems with the 2021 model. If you are into electronics, all you get is ABS. And it's just on/off, no adjustments. The T7 will disappoint if you want all the electronic bells and whistles. If you like simplicity, you will love it. For true long distance riding, you may find the Yamaha T7 fuel tank a bit small at 16 Litres / 4.2 US gallons, although good fuel economy helps. It turns so well it was hard to believe it's a 21 inch front wheel up front. With the right tyres you could easily embarrass a lot of sports bikes. The brakes were a tad soft but of course came into their own offroad, as mentioned in other Yamaha T7 reviews. Also, if you push the Yamaha Tenere 700 hard you will find the limits of the suspension quickly. However, as mentioned the T7 is so cheap you could easily get the suspension sorted and still have cash left over. My Yamaha Tenere 700 review conclusion? I was really hoping to find a pile of things wrong with this bike to counter all the glowing reviews. But for the money, I think it's a great package and it's actually made in Japan. Or if in Europe, your T7 is manufactured in France. This contrasts with the KTM 790 now being made in China and a significant number of known issues cropping up for quite a few KTM owners. Do you own one? Ridden one? Keen to hear your thoughts, including any problems encountered or mods you've made. Offroad? The T7 actually does feel quite light until you get down to very low speeds. No matter what tricks Pol Tarres can do on a T7, you really start to feel the weight if you get into serious offroad riding.

CORRECTION: Press releases from KTM initially said production of some models in China would begin from June 2020 (example here: bit.ly/37t2znu ). However, an industry insider has just informed me this still hasn't happened as of Aug 2021, due to delays caused by Covid and other factors. Production is anticipated at a later date but there were details. ENGINE DERIVED FROM MT07 OR MT09? We said it was derived from the MT09 in the video. Technically the MT09 does appear to have come out one or two years earlier than the MT09 so it could be argued the MT09 was the first design. But obviously the T7 engine is almost identical to the MT07. WEIGHT REDUCTION TIPS: Good suggestions here. www.advrider.com/f/threads/lightweight-tenere-700-build.1647519/ TENERE MODS, FURTHER KNOWN ISSUES/VIEWER COMMENTS: Exhaust can be bent and then gouge the swingarm, some owners fit spacers. Also the exhaust mount is part of the frame, so in a fall you can actually bend part of the frame. Like the gnarly stuff? Look at aftermarket exhausts that aren't so exposed when you drop the bike. The 18" rear rim size only allows a narrow choice of 150/80 tyres. A 17" rim or narrower rim would have worked better. ABS switches on by default after turning ignition back on (at least the Aussie models do). The stock rear brake pads wear out fast. Replace with sintered pads. Read this thread: www.tenere700.net/topic/979-wear-brake-pads/ I only found taller riders commenting about the windscreen noise/turbulence, but shorter riders report this too. Two viewers said the clutch cover sticks out more than it should and hits the shinguard of their boots. HANDY MOD: Make the 2 piece seat removable without using the supplied allen key. Remove the pillion seat with the ign key, remove rider seat with supplied allen key. Invert the aluminium top hat bushes and refit bolts. Throw the allen key in the bin, it will never be needed again for seat removal. THINKING OF BUYING A T7? I encourage you to read through the comments! A signficant number of owners said it's a great bike but they are selling because it's simply too heavy (and occasionally too tall) for them. It's a very capable bike, but you may find you are better off looking at lighter single cylinder models. KTM 790/890 VERSUS THE TENERE: One or two KTM owners don't like my comments. I suspect the T7 will suit the majority of riders better. Why? It is far cheaper, more reliable, and is made in Japan... not China as future KTM models will be. However, if you are an experienced aggressive rider you have up to AUD$4000 to upgrade the T7. I'm thinking $1000 on suspension, $1000 for power mods (exhaust and ECU). And then if you want a quick shift or other stuff you've still got a fair bit of cash to play with. But yes, some riders will prefer the KTM already set up with that stuff and won't mind where the bike is manufactured. It's all different horses for courses. IS THE KTM 790 MADE IN CHINA? Some KTM owners are getting annoyed with my statement about this model now being made in China. KTM press releases indicated production of the 790 (and some other models) would begin in their Chinese factory between June and Sept 2020. And the new 750 will be too. But yes, older models were made in Austria, and I'm sure some on the showroom floor at the moment there might still be the older Austrian built ones. If KTM publicly states manufacturing never moved to China, I will issue a correction. www.motorbeam.com/ktm-adventure-790-duke-790-to-be-made-in-china/ www.morebikes.co.uk/news/64758/ktm-joins-forces-with-cfmoto-and-shifts-part-of-production-to-china/ www.bikesales.com.au/editorial/details/ktm-developing-750-adventure-with-cfmoto-126081/ amcn.com.au/editorial/austrian-company-ktm-has-joined-forces-with-chinese-motorcycle-manufacturer-cfmoto/

Ive gone through 3 exhaust now hanging on the side getting smashed. Now I have a Huzar high mount (under seat) exhaust with 0 issues. Ive just installed a Dominator header (decat) on it and wow what a power difference. If you like me tried your friends ktm 890, and was a bit ehhhh with the power on your T7 afterwards, then just put the decat header on and your smile is back again:) And it have not been on dyno yet, so im suspecting a tad more power when its dialed in.

The real fix,is ordering a new KTM 890 R. After realizing a T7 is a year out,and needs so much retro fitting to bring it up to austrian level.........I bit the bullet and went full 890 . They have em in stock here.
@nathancjenkins
@nathancjenkins 3 года назад
shouldn't you start comparing it to the 890, since the 790 was discontinued in 2020...? I believe my 2021 890R was made in AUS, not China? Is it fair to compare and discount the ktm because you're comparing it to an out of production year older bike, AND where future iterations it MIGHT be produced? How about just compare to the 2021 matching KTM equiv, the 890R? The 890 is everything the 790 was and a lot more, including better reliability. Still not on yamaha levels, with regard to reliablity, admitted.
@nathancjenkins
@nathancjenkins 3 года назад
really, between the T and R, its about money and reliablity. The ktm wins every measurable aspect of performance and capability, as well as the grin inducing non-measurables, like riding experience. The yamaha wins being a cheaper bike and more reliable. It's that simple. Naturally people do include things like price and longer term reliability when deciding what to buy. If i was riding RTW, or to Alaska and had to choose, i'd take the Yamaha. Would hate not having my cruise control tho!

Been using a 500EXC for dualsport/light adventure riding and recently bought a T7 and am just blown away with how good it is. On road and off. Ok it's not going to be used in tough singletrack, or for serious offroading, but for day to day rides on roads and trails it handles everything brilliantly. I've no complaints at all, but if I absolutely had to complain about something it's that it feels so good at times I forget what bike it is and give it a bit too much power. This is how I learned that if it's dropped on the right side the exhaust bracket can bend and then the exhaust can grind against the swingarm.
@crosstrainingadventure

I know some aftermarket exhausts are working better in that regard. With a bit of luck Yamaha might revise the exhaust system... but none of the Japanese brands seem very keen to updating their bikes in recent years. 😢

I would recommend another windscreen and a seat if you plan to use it for long distance. My god the buffeting is insane on highways if you’re tall, and the seat gets uncomfortable after 20 minutes for my ass. And i can ride the plank seat on my husky 701 for far far longer before needing to stop. Don’t know what it is, but the wedge shape of it komda pushes you and makes your buttocks wanna slide forward sort of. So your muscles are tensed up by the friction of it. Hope you get what i mean. Other than that, great bike

One of the most balanced reviews of the T7, I've have watched, a key thing on the CP2 twin is the 270 O crank, which Yamaha developed for the TRX850 sportbike years ago, it's smoothes the power pulses from the engine, for a low vibration ride.

Fair review: had one 10 months. Usual stuff, bash plate , crash bars , racks etc . Shock Spring & revalve, revalve & preload spacer sorted the suspension for less gentlemanly riding. Chucked the stock muffler fitting Dominator ( $300) . Upgrading air filter to Unifilter setup is a must for Oz : also upgrade top of air box as they are known to not seal correctly. Rear brake is only average. This may seem a critical assessment but it’s not , the T7 is good bike just needs small stuff to make it very good 👍

This bike scales at 438 pounds with 2 gallons of fuel and using the trail/offroad suspension settings is a HOOT offroad. Softer motor and suspension than a 990 but can run with them in all but the worst terrain. If you ignore its heavy for a dirt bike weight (452 pounds), if you don't take to heart it's top heaviness (more so than other "Adv." bikes), and if discount the many crashes/falls reported by Yamaha T7 riders, then the Tenere 700 is for you. I'm a little over 6' and weigh around 110 kgs. Never bottomed out the suspension, no flat tires, and the bike just handled wherever we went, with ease....but then I am only an average rider! With luggage crowding me forward, after time the cockpit did become a bit cramped, and I did install a taller wind screen. Couple of my favorite features are the bike's ability to pull hills with ease, and fuel economy was surprisingly good, often getting more than 240 miles per tank! I bought a 2021 T7 in April and it’s my 28th motorcycle. I’m 60 years old and have been riding since I was 4, everything from Honda SL’s to Ducati’s and BMW’s. I spent the last 25 years riding Harley’s and last year I had to have a shoulder replacement on the left at which point the Dr told me I could continue to ride but would have to move to a lighter bike. I Love this Yamaha, I’ve replaced the windshield and swapped the countershaft sprocket for a 16 tooth in effect turning 6th into an overdrive. This bike does everything well and the CP2 engine is as reliable as an Anvil with basic maintenance. I imagine this bike will outlive me and I don’t plan on trading it anytime soon. Great Job Yamaha!

Nice review Barry! I too tried one out after seeing all the rave reviews and enjoyed it, however, I was actually pleased to jump back on my 2001 XL650 Transalp for the 100km ride back home. The motor makes very similar power and the road handling is also much the same, although I have made a few modifications to the Transalp to improve both. The real difference for me was in seat height, comfort and wind protection, with the 20 year old Transalp being far superior for my short legged , 172 cm worn out frame. The Yamaha felt like it had a much higher center of gravity at very low speeds or stopped, and the seat was similar to a DR650's plank. Still waiting for that perfect mid range adventure bike! Maybe the new Honda Transalp/baby Africa Twin will do it for me, but I won't hold my breath?

Very good point, Mike! While this bike will hit the mark for many, you can see in the comments some have found it too heavy for their purposes and are opting for lighter single cylinder bikes. It's bizarre how little is occurring in the mid sized market!

I have one and absolutely love it!! It can do almost everything. The one thing I wished you highlighted as a negative is the exhaust mounting. It is so idiotic that R&D didn't see this. If you crash the bike on the exhaust side you can potentially bend the exhaust mounting point arm WHICH is welded to the frame, so you pretty much bend the frame!!!! and if you hit it hard enough it can actually take a chunk out of the swing arm b/c the exhaust is sitting so low. I am not sponsoring Camel adv but they make a high exhaust kit, which i installed. I can tell you if i didn't have it i probably would have bent the frame.... I am new to heavy A$$ bikes and there was a learning curve (:. there like 2 other companies as of now that have made a solution to solve this expensive issue. But yes the suspension is too plush. But, tbh I maybe do that type of tails that go beyond the suspension maybe 1 time each month, so i really dont find it necessary to pay $500 from racetech for new springs for the bike. I mean i have a ktm 500 that i primarily use that for anyways. Seat height is too low for me. BUT the rally seat is always out of stock everywhere, it seems they never get them imported to the US, its super annoying. ABS is great and all, but I really wish that it only turned off the rear and not the front. Other than this the bike performs perfectly, and it's built like a tank. My father has a ktm 790 adv R and he beats me on straight aways (obviously) but cornering ktm just cant compete. UPDATE: I've just spoken to an industry insider. Chinese prodution was meant to commence as early as June 2020 as per press releases (example here: bit.ly/37t2znu ). However, as of Aug 2021, delays caused by Covid and other factors have meant that Austrian production is still occurring (except for the 390). Production is still anticipated at a later date but there were no details on when. I asked why KTM hadn't issued updated press releases but our man on the inside doesn't know.

I had been without a bike for 18 years and bought a T7 earlier this month. It is everything I hoped it would be and then some. As a daily commuter, it is well-mannered, if a little bit tall. I'm still a major noob on dirt roads and fire trails, but the only time I feel like I could do better is at very low speed. If there were more of these for sale in the US, Yamaha would be selling them. Overall, if you think you'll ever go off road and you're not a motocross legend, this bike should serve you very well.

I throughly enjoyed my 150 mile test loop. Agree with everything you’ve said. it’s probably the only adventure bike I’d buy because it does so well at everything I’d need it to do that I couldn’t justify spending more money on a European brand to do potentially the same things on or less.. If that makes sense. But In My T7 Facebook group, I see riders buying it for $15,000 US dollars out the door at some dealers and waiting 11 months to do so…but it is 2022 now so…there’s that but a most guys are getting them for $12.5 - $13.5 out the door. A little high but not that bad I guess.

The T7 didn't do it for me. I've had like 40-some bikes, and the T7 ranks as second shortest ownership experience. I think what you are coming from makes a big difference. My past couple bikes were a KTM 950 (loved!) and 1090 Adventure. Compared to those, the T7 is a huge downgrade in power and suspension, which I didn't fully prepare myself for. I realistically ride 80/20, so having a bike that is engaging and fun to ride on the road is very important to me. The T7 can barely power wheelie in first gear, which to me is an indicator on the fun meter. Beyond that the suspension and brakes are only adequate, and the cheap construction leaves a bike that has literally no garage appeal, for me. If these bike truly sold for MSRP, then all could be forgiven, but with markup in the 13k area, that puts it close to the KTM 890. The entire time I owned the T7, every time I rode it, I was thinking about what I could have had instead. I ride motorcycles for fun and excitement, so I'm willing to trade reliability for that. In the end I sold the T7 for more than I paid for it and bought an 890 R. OMG, the riding experience is night and day! The 890 effortlessly wheelies and is way easier to handle than the T7 when turning around, etc. We'll see if my ownership experience sours as time wears on....

@@TooWheels-xk5bz I'm still loving the 890. In fact I just got back from an 835 mile 4-day trip to the CA Redwoods and Southwestern Oregon today. Did a lot of remote dirt/gravel roads, and some pretty rough climbs and descents to/from lookouts. The suspension took some major hits with the bike fully and took it like a champ. We were on some awesome curvy paved roads and the bike was so fun. Even with the stock seat, it's very comfortable. I've got almost 8k miles on it now and my love for it has not faded.

Kinda surprised you didnt have more negative barry. From my experiences with a t7 through a friend, the exhaust is prone to getting bent after a right hand drop, after which it'll gouge the swingarm as if moves, owners fit spacers to help. Rear rim I dont know what yamaha was smoking, a 150/18 has very few tires available. If they'd used a 17 inch rim they wouldve had all the same tire sizes as an r1200gs, or of they'd made it a narrower rim to accept 130/18 tires youd have enduro tires and rimlocks. Most owners fit a 140/18 rear as there is a lot more aggressive tires available. In Michelin tores alone theres an extra 3 tires available by going that tiny bit narrower. Rim locks will not work cause of the wide rim. Abs automatically switches back on after turning the ignition back on. That one is the aus gov fault with their legislation, but you need to be careful to remember to switch it back off after an offroad break.

I own a Tenere 700 and love it. I wouldn't trade it for any other bike (at this moment) even if I had a million dollars. My height is 180 cm. The good: - The windscreen is great imo. My previous (and first) bike was a Kawasaki Versys 650 from 2007. That windscreen was probably worse than having none at all. All the wind is redirected directly to your face. I'm having no issues with the stock windscreen, and it looks great too. - The distance to the ground is a bit high. I can't stand with both heels on the ground. However: you should be stepping on while it's on the very robust side stand. And while stopping, your right foot should cover the rear brake. With those things in mind, the bike is tall, but not too tall. It also helps that the bike is pretty slim, so you can extend your leg almost straight to the ground. - The standing position is great. No need for handlebar risers! - Beside the price, I also love what's included: a good enough bash plate, the handguards, the proper sized foot pegs, etc. - The 'easy to bend exhaust' issue is new to me. It is easily fixed with a pannier rack. I can recommend the (of course) soft panniers: GIVI GRT709. If you plan on riding on rough terrain, then you should expect to drop the bike once in a while. So soft panniers are a no-brainer for me. The bad: - The fuel tank is a bit small. 250km is when I usually start to look for fuel, 300km is when I start to sweat. The indicator for how much fuel is left is very weird. After 100km the indicator gives you a 6/6. After 250km it only gives 1/6. Resetting the distance after getting fuel is an easy solution. - The suspension is fine. Not great, just fine. - If you drop the bike, it's flat on the ground. With KTM and BMW you have the bulky parts at the bottom which prevent it from getting totally flat on the ground. It doesn't seem like a light mid-class bike when picking it up.
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 2 года назад
Thanks for those points, Bassert! My friend who offered the test ride says the bike is so economical he's not worried about the small fuel tank, but it must be a concern for seriously long adventure rides in remote areas. I wonder if it was just to keep the wet weight looking good? 🤔

Switched from a 2007 GSA to the 2021 T7. I added the Rally Raid suspension and the usual protection parts. Overall I am pretty happy with it. The front is sensitive to tire style and tube weight. It does get head shakes at freeway speeds (65 mph and up) with very knobbely tires and ultra heavy tubes (the steering damper helps somewhat). I went from the Motoz Rallz's (80:20) back to a Dunlop Trailmax (50:50) to improve that again. I'll keep the bike for now, but am waiting for the rumored GSA1300. Made in Japan was a big reason for buying the T7 and the reason I skipped the Chinese KTM.

A few years back I was actually supportive of the Chinese getting into the market if they could achieve good quality control and bring prices down. But sadly none of this seems to be happening, along with a pile of political stuff that's not so great if you find that to be important. The head shakes are interesting, only one other guy has mentioned this... is it over rough roads? Admittedly I didn't have the bike doing 65 to 80mph too often but it seemed rock solid.
@frebuton2016
@frebuton2016 3 года назад
@@crosstrainingadventureOff road there are no issues with the Motoz Rallz tires, only on the freeway. It usually wobbled on cracks, grooves and bumps in turns. For fun this weekend, I put the original Pirelli STR front tire back on with about 2000 miles on it. I reused the Motoz heavy duty tube inside it (not ueber heavy duty). Balanced it and with the exact same rally raid uk fork settings. Same preload, compression and rebound. The high speed stability was instantly cured over the Motoz Rallz tire. I took it up to 95mph on grooved California concrete freeway surfaces. Stable as a rock now. Funny thing is, now it has a slight handlebar wiggle everywhere up to 30 mph and also when I suddenly chop the throttle on tarmac. I think that my particular bike is really picking up on tire imperfections, because of the stiffer front springs and sag settings. Next week, I'll put another brand new dunlop trailmax on it, to see if it improves even more. I double checked, if the front and rear wheels were true and if the spoke tension and all other components (triple clamp and steering head) where loose and they all checked out okay. I'm on a mission to cure my T7's head shake, but my bike seems picky with tires.

I also have this bike and I think people are really overestimating it's offroad capability. It's the same thing with R1200GS etc. The marketing shows pro riders racing around on it, but in real life it's a 205KG bike (now add also racks, luggage, crash bars etc, easily another 20KG) and it's difficult offroad. The biggest design issue of this bike is the exhaust mount which will bend everytime you fall on the right side, until you crack it and it's welded to the frame, so the bike is totaled. Also the center of gravity is very high and you can instantly feel it when you get on this bike as soon as you get it off the kickstand, all the weight is high up. The engine has a wet sump which is usually not good for offroad bikes, because you have to mount it very high up to get ground clearance, and you can see this is the case on the T7. Otherwise it's a great road touring bike and also good on gravel roads, but best not alone because when you get in trouble it is very heavy. I never rode the 790 but you can tell it's design is much more thought out and no design flaws like exhaust, and the engine is mounted low and the fuel tanks is low which also acts as a crashbar.

Toni Bou on the Africa Twin. Harley Davidson's latest stuff with the Pan America. We have so many guys getting into adventure riding for the first time and I can't help feeling some of them will get hurt, thinking these bikes are more capable than they are off road.
