Thank you Dr. Kwon! You are truly demystifying and clarifying many things with regard to the swing. Your research and teaching techniques are truly a great treasure within the totality of the game. Congratulations on your great work. It is clear to me that you have a heart to serve golfers and golf in general.
Athletic MOtion Golf is great at showing all the PGA Tour winners who shift away and recenter.. Dr Kwon is great at showing us HOW to DO IT. Thank YOU, Dr. Kwon.
This should be a top 5 golf swing drill/tip on all of youtube. No expensive aid, just a certain diameter rope anyone can buy at the hardware store. I also gained close to 10yards on my 60 degree wedge after watching Dr Kwon on Be Better Golf, because I was so prone to opening early on the downswing and/or pulling my arms. I am a single digit hdcp and I am confident I can get to scratch simply from watching less than 30 min of Dr Kwon. I now know why my misses are pulls or hooks and it’s easy to fix
Thank you Dr. Kwon for posting. I know it adds to your work load and probably is more of a service. You are truly spreading knowledge. I have been using a rope without being knowledgeable for some time but now I see that there are indeed checkpoints to provide feedback. I have been using the step one and step two drill for a couple of years before even hearing about you. Now that I have been able to study your videos and those of Brendon I realize I was doing it quite incorrectly. Still I believe it was helpful in improving pressure transfer. Hopefully I can clean it up a bit but I think instruction might be needed. This was a little too long but I really want you to know how valuable this data is to those of us who have been swinging inefficiently for years.
This is gold. Thank you so much Dr.Kwon. I purchased a rope today for $8 from home Depot . I have 2 kids who have been playing Junior golf and taking lessons for years. I noticed in 1 session already better lower body awareness by doing this rope drill. Simple but invaluable information. God bless you 🙏🏽
Dr. Kwon it's a pleasure to watch your videos. Of the multitude of so called Golf professionals on RU-vid giving lessons : very few are of your calibre. Grateful Aussie.
Pleasure Sir. I have been in the golf business for many years, I have produced and hosted a golf show on Australian Television and run an on line golf business; know heaps of so called Golf Pro's and believe me, very few equal your knowledge. Thank You for your Channel.
Thank you Dr. Kwon. I am grateful for your knowledge. I'd be interested in your expertise on the differences in biomechanics of a female vs. male golf swing if there are any. Given women tend to have wider hips, generally shorter and less musculature I would think our mechanics might vary. (I think of the chair challenge which few men can accomplish but women do so easily). And if there are differences would love a video addressing women's swings. Most training content address men primarily. Thank you.
Hi, without going into a lot of detail you are 100% correct. Women's lower body is rs are stronger and upper weaker. What Kwon be teaches is essentially the swing used by Korean women pros from whom I take lessons. It minimizes the arm strength and utilizes the core. It works for everyone but is why smaller women will benefit. Look closely at most body types on LPGA and you will see lower body dominance. The tall slimmer ones have greater leverage at their disposal and don't need to look like they have had three or four kids. Play well
I do have data of ladies tour players, collegiate players, and junior players but have not analyzed the data seriously so far. I feel guilty and will start working on the data analysis soon.
I recently started swinging a rolled up towel and it is amazing how much it works as a training and feel aid. Agree the key is to coordinate the body movement from the ground up. Feeling a pull starting down is an amazing feeling that directly translates to a real club.
thanks you Dr. Kwon. the drill is not new but the details and cross check you mentioned are what make it actionable to me. for the first time i know how to determine if my swinging is correct or not.
Hi Dr Kwon, I love how the rope swing keeps me from rushing at the top. I worry about my real swing finish i.e. not finishing my swing during training. I would like to do 3-4 cycles of your rope swing and then a complete finish. Or do have a drill to aid in finishing a swing?
With the rope, mainly work on developing an good body rhythm with a large number of continuous swings. You can put different levels of effort as you swing. With the club, you can limit the number of pre-swings to perhaps 3, and then 2, and then 1... Gradually moving to no pre-swing.
Hi Dr Kwon. I love all your instruction. I am also using thge rope quite often. You also have instruction with a driver, I have a Orangewhip which has a very flexible shaft which gives you an in between feeling of the rope and the shaft. It helps in doing the trickermotion and the step drills with a continous motion. Perhaps you can do a video about it.🙂😊
Hello Doctor Kwon I’ve been patiently waiting for your rope drill, it is a perfect example of timing and technique. Great results when done correctly and great results when done incorrectly. I love it. Now I look forward to seeing you swing a mid iron and a short iron. Thank you for sharing with us. Jerry
Brilliant. Just as Ernest Jones was advocating and teaching in the 1920's. He made a fortune after emigrating to the US and teaching ' Swing the Clubhead '
This is perfect for training the body to start from the ground up in sequence with the shaft "coming off the shoulder" last in the sequence. Rhythm, tempo, and distance.
Thank You Dr Kwon. Amazing how a piece of rope makes you more relaxed when you swing the club. Even better for teaching Drag and Lag. What’s the best Repetitions and sets when doing the Rope Drills. Thanks again Dr Kwon. Kindest Regards Stuart
Dr. Kwon, thanks for sharing your knowledge to all of us. Your explanations are so clear and understandable...... it helps a lot to improve the movement and to know WHY specific movements are helpful. Absolutely interesting to view "Golf" based on scientific work ! Have a nice 2022 and stay in good health. Regards from germany.
Thank you Dr Kwon for the insight on timing the smooth transition.. you've made it so clear for us to apply..it ll be a game changer for me..thank you .
I started doing this rope drill. Didn't even have to do it much. My golf swing issue has always been my arms being too fast and pulling my shots. My last 6 rounds have been some of the best in my life with ball-striking. If I could putt I'd be a scratch golfer.
I use and have my students use a beach towel. Toe a knot on one end and the knot will be the swinging end that whips around the body. I use for both my one plane and two plane swing students. Where the knot wraps around your chest hi or low determines which plane they are working on. Great, great drill.
Rope purchased, NOTE: I ordered from Knot & rope per your suggestion and there is a special instructions section...I purchased 21 feet and asked they cut into 7ft pieces...they did for no extra charge! For those of you that don't want to fuss...
Dr. Kwon, I am so appreciative of all these drills and videos that you are providing. Having just turned 60 and struggling with varied back pains over the last several seasons from poor mechanics, your approach is exactly what I need (i.e., love the "Safe" in GRANDIOSE). In videotaping myself, even with the rope drill, I'm a big "swayer" left and right, whereas you stay so nice and centered in your demonstrations. Anything I can focus on? thanks!
Imagine a cone-shaped space in which you are allowed to move. You can move the pelvis and legs freely but the lateral motion becomes smaller at the top. This is the opposite to a sway. With this cone-shaped motion, you will be able to push the ground down and outward.

Love your videos Dr Kwon. Extremely instructive and comprehensive. How would you describe your rope? It looks like braided rope: length, weight, diameter....I am going to purchase one. Thanks again for the wealth of information and crystal clear explanations! You are a credit to your profession and industry !! I feel like I am stealing cookies out of the cookie jar, when I am watching your videos! Best of luck in all of your endeavors!
I will be tryjng that tomorrow!! In your next video could you do the rope swing down the line. As i tend to be steep in the downswing as my hands tend to move out from the top it would be interesting to see if the rope is inside or on the same plane as the backswing. Your step drills have improved my game for sure but my takeaway has gotten a little low and inside. When the club is swung forward as a trigger the wrists and forearns have released but for me at least they want and need to roll back in the backswing which feels very natural coming from the club at 12 oclock, promoting the club to get inside rather than outside the hands at club parallel in the backswing and my trail elbow wants to fold quickly and move behind me to accomodate the faster motion of the club passing my body. I noticed when Brendan from bbg was drilling the 1st stage he was similar. Have you a thought on this ??? In brief how to keep the club path correct in the backswing. Perhaps I am throwing the club to around to the left as part of the trigger move but my arms are following my hips which are rotating open. At 12.33 of the Stage 1 if you play etc vid if you freeze it at club parallel the club is clearly way inside Brendans hands. Thanks again and love your work. All the best from Ireland!!!!
Dr Kwon, thank you for your insights into the golf swing. Should the rope be hitting the body causing pain when it hits? I purchased the rope from blue ox as per you requirements, but have to wear a sweatshirt when I do the drill otherwise it hurts.
Thank you for such great material Dr. Kwon. My question is how to use your method when my legs are so bowed. I have tried to implement your swing plane and other skills but find I have a difficult time using the ground to "kick the ground" to good effect. Thanks.
Hi Dr. Kwon, it might be a stupid question…. But are the techniques you are teaching more for hitting driver ( upwards on the ball ) or can they be used for hitting irons as well? Love the content btw…. Really easy to follow and easy to put in practice.
Thanks for making this video Dr. Kwon! I have been doing this for a couple of weeks now. I feel that I have this down!?! But is there anyway to send you a video or something for some critique?
I think the key here is how to kickstart the backswing in a real situation, where you cannot kickstart it by balancing the club the other way and thus you (myself) tend to either start a backwing very arms dominating or by sliding the hips. Is there a recommended thing thought or move?
Came here again after swinging two clubs at a time like this on the range. The heaviness made me use my feet and legs/ torque/ground pressure to get the thing on plane and around me safely. What would be the benefits of doing something like this compared to the rope?
Heavier objects are beneficial in terms of feeling the motion of the device. Lighter objects are beneficial as you have to work carefully with the device to produce the intended motion. Objects with flexibility are good for finding the right timing. It is in general beneficial to work with tools of different inertial properties to fully develop the motor system in your body.
Dr. Kwon, Thank you for this! Quick question, if I may? - Should the golfer be actively rotating the forearms in this drill? If so, when and to what end? (Or, will the arm rotation automatically occur if we focus on swinging the rope in plane?) Thanks!
The forearm motion (pronation/supination) is to promote the club motion. If you focus on continuous club (CH) motion throughout the entire swing, you will be able to find reasonable arm motion.
No, an overswing is not necessarily bad as long as the clubhead stays reasonably close to the swing plane. If the wrists become too loose during a large BS, it can be a problem. I actually promote large BS.
