I have a 2014 C-Max Energi. It is one of the best cars I have ever owned. One thing that really isn't brought up is how long the consumable components last. Since the engine is used so little compared to the electric, I get over a year between oil changes (even then, it almost doesn't need it but I do anyway because I am afraid of oil viscosity breaking down because of the time). I still have the original brake pads on at 81k miles (because of regenerative braking) and the last time I check, I estimate I will get 120k miles on them! We get about 60 mpg out of it (and my wife's driving is not really ideal for maximizing mileage, either). I own 7 cars and trucks and all have V-8's except the C-Max and my sandrail so I am not exactly a tree hugger, but I will not be giving up that C-Max for commuting anytime soon unless it is for another plug in hybrid or a full electric.
@daveedson8607

My 2012 Lincoln MKZ hybrid had 215K miles on it at trade in and still had original rear brakes. Fronts were replaced once and were over 50%. Still had original spark plugs.

I have had 3 Ford or Lincoln hybrids. They have all been exceptional, with only 1 hybrid related failure, a switch on the ventilation damper door on my 1st hybrid, a 2005 Escape. I've put a total of over 500K miles on these, my last one was a Lincoln MKZ and I traded it in with 216K on it and it still had the original plugs and rear brakes. These cars are very refined and extremely reliable. I laugh at people who try to tell me that I will regret having a hybrid because of higher maintenance costs. Oil change on the Lincoln recommended at 10K, I pushed it to 15K with oil quality still good. Brake life is unbelievable. No transmission maintenance required. 12V battery life is great because it doesn't have the starter wearing it out. I had a Ford salesman try to low ball me on trading in my Lincoln telling me about the maintenance costs I was in store for, I laughed in his face and picked up my keys and left. I don't know many people with more hybrid experience than me, and its been all good.

At what mileage is the 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid battery expected to require replacement, AND, any guess on the cost? I'm driving way too much, at the moment about 30k miles per year. Ford only covers the hybrid battery to 100k, and I'm trying to decide how long of the OEM Ford Extended Warranty to purchase in light of a potential large expense to replace the hybrid battery at perhaps 100k. Would it make sense to purchase the ESP plan that goes to 150k, and hope the battery holds out, or just keep it for 3.5 years and sell it at 100k?

GREAT clear and informative video! Thank you for making this, I’m seeing so many comments with people concerned about the “”cvt””…. it’s an ECVT and it shares no resemblance to the notorious CVTs of old. I would bet the Ford Mavericks with the long proven and iterated Ford Hybrid drivetrain will be even more reliable than the Ecoboost optioned ones. Mark my words, especially when you consider the fewer moving parts and regenerative braking saving the brakes in the Hybrid system. People don’t realize that Ford tested an earlier version of this Hybrid drivetrain in NYC taxis for YEARS… and many of them are still running fine!
@bill_clinton697

Plus, the Prius drivetrain has been used in taxis for years with no issues. And the Prius hybrid system is very similar to the type used in the Maverick and Escape hybrids.

I love my 2017 Ford C-Max Hybrid. So, I was thrilled that the Maverick will have an updated version of that incredibly smooth power train. Unlike some other manufacturers' hybrids Ford's will actually operate in electric mode at freeway speeds. My C-Max does slightly over 70 with flat grades for a few miles at a time.

I forgot to mention, my hybrid hylander was is rated at 35 mpg combined. I am averaging 37.4 mpg. I have found that the electric power can be controlled by barely touching the excelerater. All these things are explained in the owners manual. Also, I bought it off the showroom floor on a rainy Friday night 15 minutes before closing time. It stickered for $47600. After 2 hours of negotiating back and forth, my purchase price was$38700. I drove several other vehicles, but nobody would budge on price. I was getting $1600. Off sticker at best on other brands. And also my Toyota was built in southern Indiana close to home. So if this is your first hybrid. Go for it and don't look back. You'll love it.

"I don't like that food because I've never eaten it before!" Knowledge is power and do your research. Hybrids by Toyota have been around for over 25 years and have proven bulletproof. Ford makes their own, but only after having used Toyota's systems up until 2016. There's a reason why NY city taxicabs are all hybrids. They just work and can easily provide 300K miles before need of a new battery. And with a quarter century in service, there are tons of hybrid specialists that can replace a battery for around $2500--or the price of a transmission. Most transmissions won't make it to 300K miles. The fact is hybrids have proven to have the lowest cost of ownership of any cars. Don't be afraid of hybrids.
@constantinepapoutsis6556
@constantinepapoutsis6556 Год назад
Forgot to mention that the savings in fuel would equal apx $100/month. Ten years later that's $12,000 assuming prices don't go up--an unlikely scenario. That's a lot of batteries you can buy with that. Last point that rarely gets mentioned. When you're in the city using primarily electric motors the gas engine isn't used. From my experience with two hybrids (at 200K miles each) that works out to about one third of the time without the gas engine on. So a vehicle with, say 210K miles will only realistically have 140K miles on the engine. BONUS!

Just recieved my new vehicle and have to say after 1000km most impressed with its performance, gas mileage is right at the 47 mpg and the electric motor will kick in at speeds above 100km if the right road conditions are present. I travel 270 km per day and mostly highway and have seen 70km + for my electric drive mode, it has cut my monthly fuel bill down by one third saving me between 250 to 300 dollars a month. My previous ride was a 2017 escape with the 1.5 ecoboost, which got great mileage as well just over 9L/ 100km and the Maverick is running an avg of 5.8L/100km. I am a trying out each of the drive modes and the normal and eco modes work about the same on the highway and if you use the sport mode it makes the throttle response time much quicker on the gas engine making passing much more effective. All in all great buy so far.

This is a very informative video that conveys how an eCVT works really well in simple terms. The Maverick is pretty cool if it fits your use profile, which for many people it will. My wife drives a '16 Ford C-Max plug in hybrid which has a similar predecessor to the Maverick's system, the main difference being it plugs in and has a bigger 7 kWh battery. The eCVT equipped hybrid is great in stop and go traffic as it's seamless, no gears. The eCVT likes to sit at 3K RPM and it will load the engine more at that RPM to a point when accelerating. It will act like a "normal" CVT and rev the engine annoyingly high if you really press it, but the car goes quite well, much more aggressive and "zippy" than a Prius, at least the older ones. It's not a hot rod but it has enough power to torque steer if ya romp on it, so that is good 😂 The key is to drive it so it sits around 3K RPM when putting a load on it, unless ya like hearing a somewhat gritty sounding 4 banger revving to 6K. The eCVTs have proven to be very reliable, as mentioned in the video they have far fewer parts in them than a conventional automatic transmission. To date my wife's C-Max with 88K miles on it literally has been flawless. It is also averaging 65 MPG thanks to the 20ish mile EV range.

Great video😊 I bought a hybrid Maverick yesterday. I once had a C-Max and this seems very familiar. I was surprised how truck like the maverick is and it feels like a torque monster. Did a 56 mile trip home from the dealer on rural Pennsylvania roads and got 53.8 mpg for the trip. Without using the hold feature it will roll back on you on a hill. That caught me by surprise .. The beauty of it to me is I can now escape the premium gas cost with my old car. And unlike many I dig the industrial interior but the seats for now are as hard as a rock. They may break in hopefully.

@SweetLou0523
@SweetLou0523 3 года назад
Its basically identical to the Prius drivetrain in concept. As long as they retain good QA and parts engineering, the hybrid powertrain will be basically bulletproof. As good as the ecoboost engines are, they are more stressed than non turbo engines. Id bet over the production run of the Mavericks, the hybrid system will have fewer overall failures.

I have a 2010 Escape Hybrid Limited with 96,000 miles on it and it still runs perfectly. It has a very similar system, except that this new truck is of course updated and modernized. But the basic powertrain and theory of operation is the same. I love the car. After 12 years, I still get MPG ratings that are dead bang in the middle of the EPA's original estimates. In other words, this is not a "sketchy sci-fi" powertrain. It has been proven over hundreds of millions of miles already on the road, sometimes in cars dating back to 2005 that are still running well. Maintenance on the gas engine is EASY: this is not a complicated, twin-turbocharged, VVT engine with a lot of extra hoses and so forth. The transaxles are *bulletproof* - they've gone more than 300,000 miles as taxicabs in New York City. On mine, I just change the fluid every 60,000 miles. Then the engine oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, etc., and you have to keep tabs on the separate cooling system that is used to keep the temperatures of the high voltage electrical components in range. The only question I still have is: HOW is the HV Battery's thermal management done? In the early 2005-2009 Escape Hybrids, there was a second A/C Evaporator in the rear cargo compartment kick panel that supplied cold air to the battery when needed. In 2010 Ford deleted that, and it was a mistake. The only question I have to look into before ordering one of these is to know more about the battery thermal management. Otherwise, this is an EXCELLENT powertrain for a small pickup truck or SUV. And it's at a great price. The 2010 Limited Hybrid was about $33,000 when new in 2010: that's more than $43,000 today. Ford is doing a great job.

Until I saw this video, I really didn't understand 'hybrid' but thought I did. I thought it involved a lot more instead of being invisible to the driver as you describe. I thought you had to plug it in at night if you wanted electric power the next day instead of the invisible back and forth that you described. Until this video, I would have rejected a hybrid Maverick out of hand but now re-thinking the hybrid version. Thank you.

As always excellent video, even though my order is the Maverick XLT AWD it's Great to know what options are out there and how theywork. We live in snow country so the AWD is much needed BUT when my Wife is ready to trade this in Ford should have the hybrid in AWD by then.

The Ford transmissions may seem to work as an CVT but they are not Continously Variable Transmissions, because they only have one fixed reduction gear and never vary. What varies is the electric motor speed, just like an electric power tool. The main traction motor is the primary drive at all times.The gasoline engine is not coupled at low speeds or in reverse, and they do have a clutch to engage to the motor/generator (which acts as the starter) when more power is requested at the accelerator, and if the battery charge is low. I have a 2014 Fusion Hybrid with the HF35 and you can read plenty on how it works on RU-vid, especially on the Weber University site. The HF35 has a planetary gear set to allow two power sources inputs (engine and motor/generator) and one output added to the main taction motor. Ford hybrids are mostly electrics than true hybrids. If the battery was huge, it can run almost forever on electricity. That is what the "Energi" models can do with external recharging. Some Fusion Energi owners never add gasoline in years! For the same reason, the engine oil can last over a year but the system is programmed to notify an oil change every year. I do it to keep the warranty, but in the future, I can just watch the engine oil life percentage and change it when it goes below 10%.

1:19 Most people never have problems with their CVTs (some do, but that can be said of any transmission). I put 200,000 miles on my Ford Freestyle and it never gave me any trouble. The CVT in that huge wagon allowed it to get 25 mpg every day. Honda and other companies use CVTs in many if not most of their cars and they run like Swiss watches. By the way, this was a great video and you sounds like a great and patient teacher.

Question. My job is about 90% road travel and 10% sitting on the side of the road....will the Maverick jump back amd forth from battery to motor to battery while sitting in park the entire time? I don't like running my motor for 3 or 4 hours straight just to stay cool (I'm in texas) so that why i am wondering of the hybrid goes back and forth.

I own a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid. It's great to be parked with the air conditioner on and the engine off. After the traction battery starts to get low, it will automatically start the engine, and the engine will run a few minutes until the traction battery is fully charged, and then the engine will shut off. I love it. 2022 Maverick Hybrid ordered.

You answered a couple of my questions that I had a hard time finding. A planetary gear system instead of a clutch or belt CVT. Another question I had trouble finding, is the AC electric or belt driven. I'd double check before buying, but I believe you. No one in the hot climate wants the AC cutting off when the internal combustion engine turns off. Companies like Ford sometimes cut corners and try to adapt their old technology. In this case, it sounds like they are doing it right.

A minor thing but I usually let my engine warm up a couple minutes to let the oil get moving. Doesn't look like this would work with this set up. Oil change intervals the same as a conventional engine? Interested in the Maverick but it looks like I might be late to the party with all of the orders, especially for the hybrid.

I flat tow (4 wheels down) a 2023 Maverick Lariat Hybrid behind my motorhome. I set up the tow using the prescribed procedures, with the transmission in NEUTRAL. My question is what systems are powered (12 VDC auto battery) during tow? Sometimes the vehicle goes into Deep Sleep during tow. Do I need a charge line from my motorhome? If so, where would it be connected? Thank you.

The ECVT like all CVT transmissions has oil which needs to be replaced. Best practices is to change this oil every 30,000 miles regardless of what the owners manual might say. REMEMBER, you can NEVER over service a vehicle, BUT if you under service it you will be buying a new car soon instead of later. !

Great video, I'd like to see something that covers what this truck can realistically carry in the bed. Do sheets of plywood really fit between the wheel wells, how many yards of gravel or dirt can it carry etc. I'm a DIY homeowner and would hate to get something that really can't be used as a truck on occasion.

This is similar to the Honda CRV Hybrid drivetrain, I drove a CRV for 30K and it worked well. I would like to drive one. They have come a long way from the first electric pickup, the Ranger 1988 to 91 I think. Trucks did not work out so they recalled them and destroyed them.

I purchased my first hybrid last December and I love it. It is a 2020 Toyota hylander. I am wanting the maverick for my daily driver. One thing I haven't heard from any of the videos I've watched is, can you shift gears as you need the power. I love the cvt transmission and I really love the slap stick. It is like driving an old muscle car. Does anyone know if the maverick will have this feature?

You are the 2nd video I 've seen to correctly explain hybrid drive train has no continous variable transmission. Even all the famous English speaking channels keep saying "its CVT" "its CVT". This misunderstanding sounds like people mix up engine oil and gasoline in Asia because they called them both "oil".

Ford needs to build an aerocap like the aerolid for the bed. You could easily pop it on and off and see a big increase in the hwy mpgs.
