I'm doing a variation of this after watching your video a couple of times. Again, super helpful. I ended up going through the firewall though, at the emergency break cable entrance. It's the larger rubber boot to the right of where you went through. The space on the engine side is still pretty small, but it popped through very easily using silicon grease as you suggested. Cheers and 73s.
I own a 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel, which I am adding a CB Radio too. It's great info, I'm doing it a little differently than you, and as far as pulling the cable. I'm using an electrician snake, which will be a lot easier for putting out the cables and the PA cable. Thanks for sharing. 🇺🇲👍🏼
Thank you for this video finally a good run of cables in a 5th gen ram. Was not going to punch a hole in the brake cable grommet like other videos suggested. Very informative and detailed! 73s KI5NFA
Great video, thank you. Would be interested in seeing your truck bed antenna mount. Thank you as I a trying to install a CB in my 2024 Ram. Thanks again
This was super helpful for me as I just bought a new 2023 RAM 1500 with the same configuration. I am curious how your bed mount worked out. Hope you can share what you have and learned on that as I feel that is where I would like to mount my radio rig.
Good video, looking at running the power wires for my cb radio the same you did for your ham, only thing I would do differently would be to cover the wires in split loom
Great explanation regarding the install. I have two questions though. How is the audio? Did you keep the audio coming from the rig or did you use an external speaker? Second is about ventilation. The rig looks pretty cramped in the console and it doesn't look as if there is much ventilation. Do you have a lot of fan noise as the rig tries to keep cool? Thanks again for a great vid.
Thank you! I just left the audio, so it comes through the speaker built into the unit as well as the handheld mic/speaker. It could be louder; an external speaker would help with that. As for ventilation, there is a decent cavity back there, but it is still a smallish space. I haven’t noticed the fan running excessively or any heat related issues. Thanks for watching!
Nerd, may I ask what your callsign is? Also, I looked under the hood of my 2021 RAM 1500 and is the grommet you went through with antenna and power cables high and on the drivers side of the master cylinder? That's the one I can plainly see, especially without a flashlight. I have the same Anytone and really want to install it into my truck as well. Thanks for your great video.
Thanks for watching! I’d rather not publicly share my callsign until I move and change the address to a PO Box. The rubber grommet is pretty close to where you described. It’s the only one that has a large bundle of electrical wires running through it. Should be fairly obvious to identify it based on that. Good luck with your install!
Great video and I didn't realize the center console is simple to remove. What type of bed mount did you settle on for your antenna? I own a 2024 RAM-1500 and thinking about the same or a stake pocket type mount.
I love how you have the radio installed. I would love to do that in my Titan, but thinking about having to disassemble my console makes my blood pressure skyrocket. Any concerns about the heat from the radio not dissipating?
Nicely done I appreciate it very detailed. I am doing the same thing that little area where the CD player went is the perfect spot for two-way mobile. I have an off-topic question what are the tires you have on yours? I have a 22 big horn and I like the tire set up you have on yours thanks.
Very nice install. I have a 2019 ram 1500 with that stupid cd player lol. I’d love to remove it and put a GMRS radio in its place. Working on the ham next.
Thanks for the feedback! Good luck with getting your ham license! If you have any questions about the install process, ping me on here and I'll try to respond as quickly as I can. Cheers!
Really like this install. I have a 21 Ram. Also a hard folding tonneau cover. Looking for a way to mount an antenna between the cab and bed as well. Something that clamps where you pointed would be ideal for me!
Thanks for the comment! Check out Breedlove Mounts. I bought a couple that I was going to use while I waited for my canopy to come in. Came in before I could install the mounts. So I don't have any pictures or feedback other than the build quality is excellent. Something like this might work for you: breedlovemounts.com/store/ols/products/extended-front-bed-rail-bracket-bare-xtn-frn-bed-rl1
Great video my console is much like yours however it does not have the pocket that you say yours does instead it is a flat panel with the USB ports in the middle of it. I have the anytone 578 like you. Wondering if I can get the pocket piece you have or can I just move the USB ports to the right and cut out the panel for the radio. Any thoughts?
Hey John! That’s interesting. What year is yours? Do you have the 12 inch screen and the wireless charging? I’m curious if either of those would be the reason for the difference. I don’t know for sure, but I’d bet there is a good chance you can buy the plastic like mine and swap yours out. I actually bought a replacement one when I traded in my 2020 for the 2022. It was right around $147 if I remember correctly. I can get the exact part number of both the 2020 one I bought and the one that came in my 2022. Just let me know!
I love that mount you bought. I went to their webpage and they have so many combos... Any chance you can post what you bought exactly to make that work? (Pieces) It is pretty cool. Man, I love the overview of where all the bolts and clips are. I am not a talented dude... this is super helpful
Hey there Casey! Thanks for stopping by and watching the video! Here's what all I bought for the exact BulletPoint Mounting Solutions setup as seen in the video. It cost me just under $175 with shipping. Not sure if prices have changed. Grab a rubber jewelers block on Amazon, cut it down to shape and use some 3M tape to adhere it underneath your radio - it'll stop that bouncing around and give support. The only other thing I'd say, find some kind of trim piece for around the radio and you'll be set. That looks factory with that kind of setup, if you still have it!
Thanks for the input! I thought about using some of that rubber door trim you can get from AutoZone. But with how hidden it is, I'm fine with how it is for the amount of effort I'd have to put into it to make it better. I tried a rubber block/plug I bought from Home Depot but couldn't really get it mounted evenly because of the plastic underneath. So instead of cutting the rubber to fit the plastic, I just left it as is. Been this way for more than a year and hasn't caused any issues. Only really bounces ever so slightly if I'm going fast down a bumpy dirt road or something of the sorts.
I know it's 6 months late, but have you looked at removing the CD Player? I think it just mounts in there the same as the little pocket does. Not sure if it does anything to the software on the vehicle's radio though.
Just wondered if you considered during a passenger airbag deployment your microphone and mount arm located in the airbag deployment area becomes a +100 mph projectile in the interior of your truck?
Thanks for being concerned about my safety! The arms for the MIC and phone mount don't stick out that far. They aren't directly in front of the airbag deployment area. If anything, they'd get pushed to the side and wedged between the driver and passenger airbag, which only deploys if a passenger is sitting there. I'm riding alone 95% of the time. Plus... if I'm in a car accident, I'm more concerned about all the other loose materials sitting in my center console and under my back seats. There's always a possibility of any modification you do to a vehicle becoming a hazard for one reason or another. If you're making modifications to your vehicle, you should have that understanding and be willing to take on that risk. I love your safety-oriented mindset!
Hard to tell from the video…did you follow the wires through the grommet, go through the soft part of the side of the grommet or sneak around the side of the grommet (between the grommet and the firewall)?
Hey there! So there is the big bundle of electrical wires that pass through the center of the rubber grommet. On the same rubber grommet, but under the bundle of wires, there is a nipple that sticks out on the engine bay side. I cut the tip of that off and ran the wires through there. If you look at it from inside the cab, it looks just like a whole, about the width of a pencil or so. On the grommet I'm referring to, the edges are sealed and you can't go under/around it. I've seen some folks go through a different rubber grommet, the one that the emergency brake cable passes through. On that one, you can lift up the edge on the inside of the cab, not sure about in the engine bay side though. I opted not to use that method because I didn't want anything interfering with the e-brake, even though it likely wouldn't. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you so much for stopping by!
@@nerdinwild OK, just went out and looked at my Rebel, also a 2022. I have that grommet but mine has 2 more bundles underneath the big bundle. I must have some option you don’t. I have already run my power cables through the E brake grommet. It was easy as there is plenty of room. I ran 2 10 gauge pairs of zip cord through there. I just need to slip on something to keep them from rubbing on the firewall edge. Then seal it up. THANKS!!!!!
I bet your right. I don't have the 360 camera option and the lane keep assist/auto cruise control. Glad to hear you're almost done with your install! Feel free to share pictures once you get it done! Take care.
Life's been hectic and I've completely been slacking on this whole RU-vid thing. I ended up getting a Smart Cap canopy. So I adjusted my hood to not rub and left the antenna on the hood mount. I hope your CB install went well!
Sorry for the delay! I've been quite busy and haven't been keeping up with this RU-vid stuff. I was referring to a mount from Breedlove Mounts. This one specifically: breedlovemounts.com/store/ols/products/camper-top-pocket-bracket I ended up not using it because I adjusted my hood so that the hood mount I had didn't rub anymore. This is what I'm currently using: theantennafarm.com/shop-by-categories/nmo-vehicle-specific-mounts/8905-taf-nmok-ram-1500-detail You can find a few different manufacturers that sell something similar.
Can you comment on the space at the bottom of the console where the 110v plug is? I’m wondering if I can dremel it out, and slide a single din cb/scanner into that void. Any idea if there is room for that? Thx
Hey Tugg! First, thanks for checking out the video! Secondly, it all depends on the size. I'm going to be taking the Rebel in to get some lights and wiring done next week. Once I get it back, I've gotta pull my center console out to re-run my antenna cable, so I'll get some good pictures and try to get some measurements of that space. Give me a week or so and I should have more info for you. In the meantime, the plastic piece you're talking about is the same piece that my radio is mounted to, only in a different spot. It is part #17 on the drawing here: www.mymoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-media-port-bezel-68536977aa?c=Zz1pbnRlcmlvci10cmltJnM9Y29uc29sZXMmbD0xMjImbj1Bc3NlbWJsaWVzIFBhZ2UmYT1yYW0mbz0xNTAwJnk9MjAyMiZ0PXJlYmVsJmU9NS03bC12OC1lbGVjdHJpYy1nYXM%3D
May I ask what and where you got your mount for your truck bed?. Thanks I have 2023 Ram 2500 with ram boxes. Might be hard to do it back there but id love 2
I know it's 5 months late, but the mount for the truck bed I was referring to comes from Breedlove Mounts. Something like this one for the pocket: breedlovemounts.com/store/ols/products/camper-top-pocket-bracket Or this one for behind the cab: breedlovemounts.com/store/ols/products/front-bed-rail-bracket-4-inches-above-the-bed-rail He has an extended height one for if you have a tonneau cover or something that you need to clear. Good luck!
How does the radio sound. Is it still loud and clear even though the built in speaker is now inside the center console and hidden? Looks fantastic BTW.
Hey Adam! The sound from the internal speaker on the unit is a little softer, but still clearly audible. Since the PTT handheld MIC also works as a speaker, I really don't notice it unless I'm listening to music at a higher volume. With that being said, it could certainly be louder if I used an external speaker connected to the mobile unit.
Hi there Scott! The hood antenna mount came from Ham Radio Outlet. Here is a link: www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017030 Thanks for checking the video out!
I been planning to add a vhf/uhf and a HF radio in my 1500 and my 3500 work van, but my neighbors and people I deliver to as a rural postal carrier use CBs and I'm more of a ham user then CB user - 73 kq4hcu
my 2021 doesn't have the pocket there. Really frustrating! I have a pocket instead below the phone holder in the center console itself. I wonder if that is a panel i could purchase separately?
I know it's 6 months late, but I believe that whole panel can be replaced. My 2020 and 2022 had/have the pocket under the phone holder like you mentioned. My 2022 didn't have the pocket up above where I installed the radio, so I just ordered a new plastic piece to install back into my 2020 and moved the one I cut over to my 2022 and it fit just fine. I imagine you could do the same. Just order the plastic for the 2020 and it'll fit your 2021. I can't be sure though. Good luck!
Been looking all over the place to find the dimensions of that radio specifically. I have a different one and trying to compare how it would fit. By any chance do you have dimensions?
Well that's annoying. I recall them being listed on the outside of the box when I purchased it, but they aren't listed in the user manual, Ham Radio Outlet's site, or several other places. I did find them listed on BridgeComSystems website. This is what they have listed: DIMENSIONS: Length: 7.5 In (19cm) Width: 5.5 In (14cm) Height 1.5 in (4cm) You could also call HRO and I bet someone would read it off the box to confirm for you.
@@nerdinwild Thanks a ton! Really appreciate the quick reply and details, this is very helpful. I am trying to do the same thing with an MXT500 and wanted to compare. Thanks for posting your video. Its great
I heard some horror stories of folks tapping into that battery... causing issues with the electrical system. It expects a certain voltage as it operates the e-torque system, so I didn't want to risk causing issues with that. I also read similar issues when folks add a 2nd battery setup for overlanding and such. So I've been hesitant to install a 2nd battery setup. We'll see if I ever do it. I'll certainly make a video if I do. I need to put together a quick update video of what's been done to the truck so far. We'll see if I can get around to making that happen soon.
So I just bought last week a 2018 Rebel. Un plugged those cables to get the wires through. Got everything put back together and trucks throwing all sorts of codes and wouldn't go out of park. I have done a ton of installs and nothing like this has happened. Did yours do anything like that?
Hey there! Sorry it took so long to reply. Been busy with work travel and hunting season. =) The hood antenna mount came from Ham Radio Outlet. Here is a link: www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017030 Thanks for checking the video out!
Not that I'm aware of. I've always had issues with my UConnect/Radio locking up or randomly rebooting, even before that UHF/VHF radio install. Nothing has changed there. The only connections that exist are to the battery itself. I didn't splice into any "ignition on" wires or anything else. I did get an error about the UConnect Box needing service. Took it into the dealership and they reset the UConnect software. Didn't say a word about my AnyTone, lights, or other accessories I have tied into the battery.
@@nerdinwild Ok! That's very encouraging. I've been reading where amateur radios wreak havoc on newer vehicles. I have a 2021 and I'm going to have it installed professionally. Prior to that, I had a 2015 F150 and the radio actually screwed with some of the electronics. Thanks for responding!
@@nerdinwild Hey there, loved the video, but after watching carefully, you slipped one in on me with the battery direct connection. I did that with my radio, I think with the cooling fan running after I shut the truck off, it runs the battery down after a few days. My Question - Where is a 'ignition on' fuse in the fuse box I can 'fuse tap' into to setup a relay to the battery. I need it to shut down everything on the radio when the I turn off the truck??? Any leads would greatly help RAM 2022 1500....Thanks in advance.. Hugh
They aren't true rock sliders. They don't mount into the frame. They just mount onto the body where normal running boards are. With that being said, I've used them as rock sliders unintentionally, and they held up! They are Go Rhino Dominator Xtreme D6 Side Steps www.gorhino.com/series-513-dominator-xtreme-d6-side-steps-complete-kit-with-brackets.html#!year%3D2022%7C%7Cmake%3DRAM%7C%7Cmodel%3D1500
Life's been hectic and I've completely been slacking on this whole RU-vid thing. I ended up getting a Smart Cap canopy. So I adjusted my hood to not rub and left the antenna on the hood mount. Because I do Search and Rescue, I use frequencies outside of the HAM range. So because of that, I'm using the Comet CA-2x4SRNMO. Even if I wasn't a SAR volunteer, I'd still use that same antenna. I've had great performance out of it!
