Voice and style of a latter day Raymond Baxter, war hero and broadcasting pioneer, humour of Barry Cryer and always wise re bikes. Loved this and the cha cha cha mambo , “Come Dancing, representing London South, Peggy Spencer” music at the beginning!
I never in a million years thought I’d see a RU-vid comment comparing me to the legendary Mr Baxter! We are both from Essex, I guess… that’s made my day! Thanks!
You would really, really like the looks of the swingarm on the 2017, 18, 19 models. The new one might be "better" but it is the ugly step-sister to the previous gen.
Bang on review , I had traded my last 1290r superduke for one last year ,massive fun but at much higher speeds than the duke , awesome on track too . Now back on a superduke R as every outing on the tuono was getting silly . Wished I could afford to have kept both .
This sounds like exactly the sort of flip-flopping between bikes I'd do myself 😂 I've decided that the 1290 engine is just The Best Engine for The Road (in The World).
Nice review Tim. Just bought one of these [in grey of course and it was 4,000 Euro's cheaper than the factory] and what a bike it is. Here in Normandy, France I am surrounded by Aprilia dealers [luckily] and have seen quite a few Tuono's on the great empty roads we have here [no pot holes either]. The seat is a little on the hard side as you mentioned so I will be replacing that with the factory gel seat for more comfort. I will also replace the exhaust with something a little naughtier [but not too loud] and sexier when she is run in. I don't have the front brake issue you seemed to have so it was probably unique to the test model you had so hopefully the Aprilia boys will sought it. Tim, this bike is so engaging and a total hoot to ride [as you obviously found for your good self] that I can not stop laughing and giggling to myself every time I ride it. She's a keeper. Anyway mate ride safe and take care.
I have no issue with the brake either 🤷🏻♂️ You can trail brake and it feels fine. The low rev clatter is much improved after disconnecting the exhaust valve and that improves the sound especially when down blipping. I have confused mine a couple of times by quick shifting with a bit of clutch which brings on an error message. Ctrl-Alt-Del ( switch off for a minute and switch on again) cured this and now I use the quick shifter up and down religiously.
Thanks for the kind message Boz! Interested to know how you get on with the gel seat. The brakes were just a bit warped on this press bike I think. I'm in Normandy soon and can't flipping wait
Me too... yes in Tarmac Grey. I did 4,000 Kilometres in the first 2 weeks of ownership. Perfect SPORTS Tourer but I've changed rear sprocket up 4 tooth to make riding in 2nd more trackable around town and on tight mountain roads.
Followed your previous advice and bought a Superduke r last year and finding it brilliant. Took it on a track day to brands hatch last week and great fun and confir and great fun.
Thanks Tim, a great review. I do love the Factory Tuono. My personal opinion is Aprilia have made the Non Factory look a bit boring in comparison. I have to love the look of the bike as much as the ride and this looks dull against the Factory.
Would agree...think 23 has new color but yeah I would just spring fir the factory.....like $3500 more here....find one on sale to take some of the sting off.....would think the red seat could show any lil black mark from you riding gear though....
I've got the Factory, of course I now have VOIGT bar risers on it which increase 30mm and also come back the way and of course have put the OEM dark smoke touring screen on. So win win as long as you dont mind paying the extra ££££
"is it a good first bike" (assuming for after passing "A" licence, obviously it's not a "learner" !). Well that's if it's insurable . Me passing as a just over 50 middle aged old git, I couldn't insure a Street Triple 765 which are a bit "tame" compared to this ! They weren't too keen on insuring a mere 96 BHP Speed Twin. Really all the insurance companies wanted to insure were 47 -> 70 ish BHP bikes. Quotes on Suzuki SV650s weren't too bad. Plus getting test rides is almost impossible with a brand new A licence .
Thanks for your review! I’m currently torn between this bike, a SuperDuke GT, the new MT10 and the BMW S1000r. Although small, the screen to me is important as I will do the occasional long trip. It’s hard to go past the sound of that beautiful Italian V4.
I have a sd gt and a Tuono. The Tuono is just to mad to be a every day bike. The sd gt is way more usable, but is tall and heavy, especially with a full tank of fuel. Test ride both, see which one suits you.
Ducati as usual missed the mark, I love the look of the Streetfighter S but the Tuono is a far more well rounded machine. You can’t use 200+ hp on the road. I’d rather enjoy all the 173hp from Tuono, if you dare!
Still looking for one here in the US (non Factory since I ride 2 up alot). Once I find one without major proce markup, I'll get it. Meanwhile will keep riding my Mt10
at the end you mention one of the biggest issues with having an Aprilia in the UK. Being near a dealer ! It's not as hard as finding rocking horse poo, but it isn't far off.
The MT-10 is a much more progressive machine delivering power when it’s been ridden compared to the above mentioned called street fighter bikes and even the SP version is cheaper than the others. If the choice were what bike would be more suitable to do track days, I understand that other options could be more tempting, but for a general use on public roads, I think this bike, even without the electronic suspension is fully capable and the Best Buy that you can make. Thank you for another excellent video!👌🏻
I've never heard of Touno which has the WSB frame on it and Ohlins SC2 on the Factory version and probably one of the best handling bikes in the world being called a Streetfighter LOL LOL. In terms of progressive, that V4 engine is totally progressive, it has a very linear and power and torque curve. The MT10 SP IMO is a great bike and has a good following but it aint no Tuono when it comes to progressive
@Fernando90054 I agree, the old MT10 was something to like, but the newer model is god awful. Looks only a mother could love. If i could find someone to fit a round custom light, I'd have one in a heartbeat.
I drooled over these at the aprilia booth at motogp last weekend. Not had an mc endorsement or ridden since 2003 before my son was born. Hearing and seeing this thing made me want to ride again.
I got 48mpg on a motorway cruise, dropping to about 42mpg when hammering it. Was expecting it to be much worse! TBF I wasn't living at the top of the revs much because my cameras were rolling most of the time and that's a bit… incriminating
Have 2 Aprilia dealers close to home, almost bought RS 660 as first bike but went with Duke 890 R.....Tuono V4 would be my next bike for sure.... screen for the wind would be nice.....Duke on the freeway sucks, wind blast whole time
Are used to love myTuono But the damn thing burns a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Not so happy anymore even less happy when my dealer said it’s normal!
I test rode the Factory Tuono with an Akro and as good as the noise was it wouldn't shut up ever, gave me a headache in the end so given the choice I agree, I'd probably go for a no Factory version to get a little more peace and a little more comfort . . .
Ducati missed the mark when they decided to go with the Twin-Pulse design for the V4. The Aprilia, now pushing 14 years since it debut, still sounds far better IMO. Compare a Desmosedici RR to a new Panigale V4 with aftermarket exhaust.
The state Highway Patrol cars and bikes here are grey (silver, whatever) with blue markings. Thinking about working up some blue highlights for my Tarmac Grey Tuono and see if it gets any more respect from the cellphone drivers out there.
Hey lumaca, did I choose this right over 890R, SDR, gsxs 1000gt+, and sfv2 as a longer distance bike addition to my 690 SMC r (now thinking about swapping that supermoto for 890 or xsr900, or sdr, or sfv2 or something)? 🤔
Yeah, I think so. I’m enjoying a GSXS 1000GT at the mo but it’s obviously nowhere near as exotic as the Aprilia. Try an SDR as well, you could totally have both without feeling silly
Fifty-four world titles may let you know that motors rip. The more attack settings just mean they give you more than most do for the price, enjoy the ride!
I knew something was missing in my life...............My brand spanking new Tuono 1100 non factory was delivered yesterday and after a few hours in the saddle I am in love. I bought purely on the strength of reviews and didn't have a test ride and I have no regrets. I am learning to recalibrate my brain to account for the speed at which solid objects on the distant horizon rush up to meet you but I think this is going to be an interesting relationship.
@@agent41822 Second that question. I am in love with naked, but lack wind protection. Sometimes I want to go 200km/h or so - but just don't like the pressure on neck due to the wind.
I ended up test riding super duke r at local dealer and I think I need to ride either this or the factory version to really decide which is going to be my next bike as both I’m sure a pretty awesome but chalk and cheese in many way😄 what would u get ?
I have ridden both, the Tuono V4, KTM Super Duke R, and Ducati Street Fighter V4. For me the choice would be Super Duke r. Why? Instant power, cheapest of the bunch, best fuel economy, and the character of the motorycle. I just don't like very long geared, and reavy bikes. It's just fail on the public roads, you have to rev such engine out to get the giggles, and you go 100 mph in second gear.... Not my coup of thee. I want to be able to play with that gearbox a bit. However you will not often find your self riding 5th gear on the Super Duke r either.
Also, the grey is entirely uninspiring. I sat on a V4 tuono (wasnt old) and the seat was horrendously uncomfortable, would like to see what the gel seat feels like.
Despite what I said in the video, I think it is as fun as the SDR - but they’re different kinds of fun. SDR is lunacy at all speeds, the the Tuono is a more cornering-focused sort of fun.
The KTM is agricultural and runs out of steam after the low down grunt imho. I swapped a SDGT for this bike and it’s a way better more complete buttery smooth package.
Don't you love living in a dystopian country, where your "voice over" doesn't prove it was you riding, yet you have to blur out the speed so GOV. don't come after you with speeding tickets yet no proof it was you. Guilty until you prove your innocence.
This should be called tuono gt (grand touring) the tuono is supposed to be a hyper naked and go head to head against the streetfoghter. Not some dad toruing boring adv bike. Paint looks horrilbe and the windscreen to. If u prefer this over the factory then get a veyrsis 650 or a 1200gs
Noted. More choices is a bad thing. It's got a screen and color change for people who ACTUALLY RIDE and when riding don't want to look like they're riding a freaking billboard. Not this garbage some of you people do where you put 50 miles or 75 miles on to and from a Starbucks and stand around talking about how fast your bike is. Furthermore, Aprilia decided to do this because enough of the base was asking for it. Comfort for the people that have twisties near by, but not too near by, and how great this bike goes is pure win and they lose NOTHING by doing this.
It does not have a taller 6th gear. The reason it holds lower revs at 6th Gear is the reason it roll holds lower revs at every gear. It's geared taller. Plus two teeth on the rear sprocket. (Can be seen in the parts fiche.)
