It’s that time of the year again when I share my editor’s dozen gear list. These are my favorite pieces I’ve tested over the last 12 months. This year, I've found everything from some fun tech, to budget drivetrains, to high-end cargo systems, and everything in between. Whether they're old or new, all of these products left an impression on me in 2022.

4 A frame bag water solution I like the crank tank. which is a solid food grad, plastic formed container, similar to a Camelbak. It can easily be removed. and you can pour out of it to do your camp cooking, and then put back on the bike with ease.👍🏼

I've gone on a number of bike treks these past few years -- mostly on rail/canal trails and not off road. One simple hunk of plastic that I appreciate is a Portland Design Works Mud Shovel 6.5. It's just a bent piece of plastic that straps to the frame behind the front wheel. It does a great job of blocking the splashes while riding through the rain as well as puddles when it isn't raining. As a bonus, it also kept pebbles from pelting my legs as I rode through gravel. I also used Tannus Armor Inserts in my tires. No flats during my 4 weeks and change of peddling from Chicago, Illinois, to Lincoln, Nebraska, then Oakland to Los Angeles, California.

Triathlon bars for long rides thats one of the things that I loved also helped me to ad another security velcro strap to my handlebar bag to keep it steady (the curse of small riders I guess, well at least I will fit in basically all tents, sleeeping bags etc.).

Peet Shoe Dryer. Bike shoes, climbing shoes, mountaineering boots, ski boots, athletic shoes, casual shoes ... any footwear that gets damp or sweaty goes on and are dry and warm in the morning. Not only that they don't stink as the moisture is the breeding ground for bacteria. Both a favorite gear and gear that lasts as I've had mine in constant use for the past 10 years.

The Ortleib Handlebar-Pack QR is a bomb-proof addition to my bikepacking rig. Fits securely between my drops and have never had an issue even when tearing down some crazy gravel.

My 12 year old steel bike. (an old rusty dented Jones) It still is my best gear (though I am curious how a new LWB would ride) . Tailfin did the job too, although expensive. And my first year on the trail with flats: hope f20 are bomb proof.

Interesting stuff, With the tailfin seatpack and rack I cant help but think a normal style lightweight rack would be more useful and cheaper. Sometimes I feel new stuff can be brilliant but sometimes like, the tailfin, it can be overthought and perhaps unnecessary?

I bought an Ortlieb Seatpack for short trips, and an Ortlieb Quickrack for longer ones with Ortlieb Gravel Pack panniers. All are top quality products and the Quickrack is only £60. An alloy Tailfin with pannier mounts is £250, without bags 😮 If the Quickrack becomes available in the US I would highly recommend it.

Goodyear Escape tire stood out to me. I have it in a 29x2.6 on my hardtail & it's surprised me how solid it rolls on the street as a rear tire & grips good on loose hardpack trails. Could make for a good bikepacking tire front paired with an XR2 2.6.

I just finished the CT Trail in 11 days and had a blast. I used ALL Revelate Designs ang Big Agnes products. Both of these companies offer phenomenal customer service, durable products and their quality is second to none. Yes I am all for capitalism and other variations, and competition, however I am sold on RPR and Big Agnes. Oh the Garmin inReach is a must! Either way, get out and Bikepack, put your phones away, and celebrate LIFE, and peace of mind that it renders. Happy Thanksgiving to all and thank you for this video. I love the channell.

I just returned from a weekend ferry trip to Victoria BC. I packed all of my clothes and toiletries as well as an extra pair of shoes in a Roadrunner Middle Earth Jammer paired with a Jack Bike Rack. Previously I had done a big grocery run with this same setup, where I nestled the entire paper grocery bag in the Jammer without having to move anything around. While neither of these configurations are exactly how I'd pack for a bikepacking trip (with more bags I can better distribute weight), the ease and convenience of carrying everything in one easily removable bag was paramount. And when I removed the bag, I still had a very usable rack surface for toting things around town.

Got the 9 speed Advent cassette, rear derailleur and "trail trigger pro right shifter". By now I would have been considering the next replacement and haven't even needed to index the gears yet.
@jonamcc
@jonamcc Год назад
+1 for the Advent 9 speed drivetrain. It's a bit of kit that I installed and promptly forgot about. I use the thumbie style shifter and while every time I think to myself "I could adjust the indexing a little bit on this so I don't have to trim every time I shift" I never do, and it doesn't really matter.

When you review the various Garmin PLB products, I hope you will give equal time to SPOT, in particular the SPOT X. I used the original SPOT, then switched to Garmin, then back when my unit died. The X is much cheaper, and most important, allows sending and receiving texts and emails WITHOUT a phone. That's a lifesaver.
@SeanKWhite-lk5zf

The problem with Spot is it uses a sat network with less coverage. It’s a shame because I love their device.

@@SeanKWhite-lk5zfWhat is your source for that? I have not noticed an issue in Canada, the US or Europe. I have used both SPOT and InReach. I just watched a 2-hr seminar on emergency beacons and no such judgment was mentioned, and a new European system was described, and it will use Globalstar like SPOT.

The apidura bladder leaks through the roll top. Wait for version 2, I bet they fix it’s leaking. Lay your bike on its side and your frame bag will be full of water. If your bike has a kickstand, then you should be ok, just keep that bladder upright.

I'm a newbie in bikepacking. Actually just looking for a bike to start so i'm wondering why u (many) don't use fenders? Isn't it uncomfortable to get dirty on muddy terrain? Thx so much!
@stuartdilts2729
@stuartdilts2729 Год назад
At least for me, all of my trips are short enough that I know if rain is in the forecast, and plan accordingly. I think an additional factor is that fenders can be hard to find and fit for mtbs
@BIKEPACKINGcom
@BIKEPACKINGcom Год назад
Sks makes some great snap on fenders, and we just did this review: bikepacking.com/gear/ass-savers-win-wing-review/ Typically, if you are riding in rain for hours on end. Fenders are pointless. It it all depends on the situation and conditions.

Love the channel but definitely agree to disagree on the the Apidura bladders. Maybe for a leisurely trip it would be okay to fiddle with but in racing I need rock solid reliability and speed. This is neither. I bought one last year and after testing it prior to a trip it has remained in storage. In my experience it is too tricky to get a solid seal with its janky ziplock enclosure. I much prefer the solid bladder seals found on running packs. Bottom line, if it does not seal reliably in the comfort of my clean, brightly lit house, I'm never going to trust it on the road. As it is I would 100% choose to carry a hydration pack and bottles before I fiddled around with this thing.
@chrisprice2200
@chrisprice2200 Год назад
I was also wondering about this set up. With the bladder, what’s the point of the entire bag? Bag and bladder would be at least $200 VS bottles and cages. Can you fit anything else in it, with the bladder? I too, would be concerned about refilling on the fly.
