2022 Cervelo R5 Review: Iterations on a theme

It’s not often that a new road bike launches to the world with the words less stiff within the marketing copy. But here we are, in 2021, and that’s just happened.
The new Cervelo R5, the latest in a long and storied R-series lineage, was designed to hit similar bottom bracket stiffness targets to the previous model but add a fair amount of compliance, particularly in the front end. It’s not much less stiff, mind. But it is less stiff. And it was done on purpose.
It’s also, of course, lighter. And more integrated. And a bit more aero. All the usual uses of more in the bike launch context. The purpose of these changes, Cervelo says, was to make a bike that stopped trying to be a “GC bike,” whatever that is, and just stuck to what it’s good at: going up and going down.
So did it work? Did this new R5 hit the mark? Watch the video to find out.

This is a really nice bike no doubt, and the kind of thing I’d be looking at if I was in the market for another. But the industry really needs to sort it’s shit out, these prices are nuts. 8.5 grand for a bike that is covered in house brand stuff, weighs over 7.5kg and has a (very very good) second tier group set on it is INSANE.
@TheEraser92
@TheEraser92 2 года назад
The bikes are designed around the pro racing 6.8kg limit but the problem is, you only reach that if you use the best of the best wheels, group set and finishing kit. Consumers get heavy crap attached to their bike and still have to pay pro level prices.

I mean its got Sram Force AXS, which is a boat anchor of a groupset and its got a a carbon wheelset with DT Swiss's cheapest and heaviest hubs. The heavy finisching kit also doesn't help. Awful spec for 8400$

@@TheEraser92 agree with sub-par parts in many of these $$ bikes and relatively high weights. That said pro bikes are rarely 6.8kg these days, usually it's 7-7.5kg (incl. pedals), or even more with disc brakes. Team Ineos w/ rim brakes needs to use Lightweight Meilenstein or even Obermayer wheels ($8k pair) to get close to 6.8kg....with Dura Ace wheels they are over 7kg

It never made sense to me to get a premium, optimized-for-weight frame then put second-tier, heavier components on it. The $/gram is typically much higher on the frame than on components, so either you care about the weight or not. I love the graphics -- Cervelo has gone thru a lot of iterations on these, and since they were bought out, some of them have been a bit too prominent. These are subtle, and the fade seems to still show the carbon and not add too much weight in paint (again, it never made sense to me to go weight weenie on the carbon then add 100g of paint). Interesting there were no comments on BBRight or on the head tube length. Traditionally Cervelo has been taller than some of the pure race bikes.

And, it (the completed build) costs $2000 "less" than that R5 frameset. It's not even the Hi-Mod! LOL Agree with you on the bottom bracket. PF's need to be abandoned once & for all. I think the bike industries need to have a good think about the direction of the bike design. The new standard (e.g. thru axle, tapped head tube….) are often to stiff up the frame and ride. Some old standard (quilt stem, 1/8 head tube, QR…) often provide more compliance. This is a pretty bike and seem decent designed (not sure about the manufacturer tolerate tho), and I am sure it ride really well), but if avenge joe like me wants a more comfy bike, I think a good used steel bike and going on a diet would be way more suitable.

Please somebody explain that "meeeehhhh I want a threaded bottom brackettttt mehhhh" bullshit to me. I've been on normal bb68 for a decade, and was really worried when I had to switch to bb386 because I really wanted the frame. Well long story short, wtf guys? It's easy to press in, easy to get it back out. Use a good one like WheelMfg, whatever. No sound. No issue. Because the tolerances on the frame are perfect. Same frame for half a decade now, still nothing. On the other bikes.... No issues. Of course threaded bottom brackets need less manufacturing precision... But why would I accept frame manufacturers to just produce cheap bullshit and cover it up with a WORSE bottom bracket system? As we can see on Specialized... it won't make the stupid ass frame any cheaper for us consumers. Threaded ones are narrow, less stiff, look less clean and provide absolute no benefit other than you being able to use your 20 year old tools. And I mean... how often are y'all replacing your BB??
@richardhaselwood9478
@richardhaselwood9478 2 года назад
Thank you for getting it. Also, can we please kill the notion that threaded BB's are somehow faultless, and never squeak. It's all about tolerances. I always wonder why people (rightly) complain that press fit bb's aren't done properly (that is an issue, and it's down to QA, or lack thereof), but they think that these same frame manufactures will somehow be able to cut a thread properly in a frame.

@James Huang Thanks James. This is basically the crux of an argument a riding mate and I have been having for about 6 months (a circular argument if you will... thanks, I'm here all week). My point is that PF are cheaper to manufacture, stiffer and lighter, and that in every other industry, you press bearings into a frame etc using an interference fit. Every other industry seems to be able to do it reasonably well too. You don't screw them in. While he's all about ease of servicing, especially when doing a 200km Audax. My point there is still, how often do you need to service a BB on a ride? Apparently, more often than you would think..... Anyway, personally, I'd love to see more cycling channels start to hammer bike manufacturers for not doing basic QA on eye wateringly expensive frames. Cheers,
