After nearly 18 months with my 21 F150 V8, I think the V8 is the best choice all rounder engine. Lifetime is 20mpg. Would be higher but I tow enough to ruin average. Best ever 25.8 over nearly 500 interstate miles. Averaged 24.9 that day on nearly 1000miles driven that day.
What gears are you running? Mine did a phenomenal job on the highway. Left Boston, didn't need to fill up until a good distance into Pennsylvania. Has 3.31's. Most guys like 3.55's and up, better torque.
Hey thanks for doing this video. That's pretty good mileage. My '05 F150 4x4 has over 120k on it and I still get 17mpg doing trips on the 80mph interstate. That's with the old 4.6 Triton. They try to push that Eco Boost V6, but if you want the same or more power you're going to give up tank capacity and the mpg is not better. Really the one unknown factor is that cylinder de-activation as no one knows what it's going to do to the engine long term.
I know the technology has been around awhile with other manufacturers. Both my last two rams had it and they were still performing great when I traded them in. I am disappointed that I won't be able to throw an aftermarket exhaust on this without hearing it drop into 4 cylinder mode. Kind of a bummer.
My 2019 3.5 ecoboost f150 4x4 crew cab long bed with the max tow package averages 20mpg unloaded and tows like a diesel. With a 36 gallon fuel tank, range isn't much of an issue. I was originally skeptical of the ecoboost engines. After driving and towing with a borrowed one, I knew I wanted one. My 2019 f150 was my first new truck after owning 5 different 100k+ mile gas/diesel v8 trucks and an in-line 6 diesel. No regrets. I'll be keeping it for at least another 5 years, if not 10.
@@Brandon_Nelson92 you'll keep it until the cam phasers go. the 3.5 was made for the NA application and then turbos were added later in life. they still haven't figured out the cam phaser issues
@garboi8976 I'm already counting on updating to the revised (Jan '21) cam phasers when/if needed. It'll cost about 3k if the dealer does it or about 1500 if i do it. Still worth it.

I have a 22 F150 5.0 It's my 7th F150 and ALL have been 5.0's (well a couple 5.4 engines were in there too). This one gets the best mileage on the highway by 2 mpg. I get consistently 22mpg on the highway with mine, and I run 20" BFG KO2's for tires.
I can't figure out for the life of me....why why why will Ford not put the V8 in the F-150 Raptors. I'm not talking about the 700hp Raptor R....I'm just saying a basic V8. I HATE HATE HATE my 3.5L Eco-BS in my 2018 F-150 Raptor.....The 3.5 Eco-BS gets 14.2mpg city/highway combined.....Thanks for the posting!
Bigger tires kill mpg. Put a 5.0 in a Raptor and it will get 13 mpg. My friend Tremor with 5.0 and 37’s gets 11-14 mpg. It’s bad. With his stock tires, he got 16-19.
21 mpg at 80mph is not bad I have a 2014 four by four Xlt with the Coyote and I drive it about 60-70 and will get about 20-21, but, I do have a heavy hi top Leer topper, and, that has lowered the mpg a bit.
My forst trip out around 1k in my 23 f150 5.0 4x4 ccswb with 5.0 i saw 19mpg. Next trip around 2k was about 15mpg. Wish it was better but i do like the truck. The factory exhaust is a bit noisy towing so far with a smalll 6500# camper
Haven't done any extensive towing but I do know the motor is loud under the dash when you really punch it. Overall I'm settling in around 18-19 average and I can live with that.

I do a ton of idle time and my Ram had the towing axle ratio(3.73) vs the f150 having highway gearing(3.15) so yes the f150 does get better fuel economy overall. It is not noticeable enough though to make a change if that's the only determining factor.
It's not a deal breaker for me. You can barely tell it's active on these trucks. I did want to put an exhaust on it but have decided against it because of it though.
Have you had any problems with the truck since you purchased it and had to take it back to the dealer? How many miles do you have on it now? I am about to pull the trigger and buy an XLT like yours in 4WD. Thanks
No issues besides just a little quirky shift patterns. No problems or hard shifts but I just think it shifts at weird points sometimes. I've got 2600 miles and I've had it for 3 months now. Love the 5.0.
I average of 80 miles an hour and you getting over 20 miles to the gallon is really good . I had a Ford with the Eco 3.5 boost purchase this new . I’m driving a ram Big horn with the 5.7 I bought it new and I have 70,000 miles on it now it’s been a good dependable truck. No issues. The coyote engine. I think it makes 400 hp 5.0 liters double overhead cam higher RPMs compared to the pushrod, 5.7. 395 hp.
Mixed driving I'm now averaging 18 which is fine. The transmission shift patterns are still very confusing to me. I miss the 8 speed in my ram far more than I thought I would but oh well. We'll see if this improves over time.
That’s a big truck with a big motor and you’re doing 80 miles an hour yeah bro you’re not gonna get great gas mileage. But I bet you if you ran it 65 to maybe 70 I bet you that truck would get maybe 23 to 24 miles a gallon
Yeah my truck had 87 in it when I got it from the dealer but I mostly used 93 since and even a little E85 which is like 108 octane. I just can't force myself to use 87 in anything with 12:1 compression even tho the manual; says its OK. Even the manual recommends premium while towing so their is something to be said for using the best. Fords do have the ability to adjust timing due to octane even if some of the other manufacturers do not. @@markmankin4975
I have a 2023 F 150 with a 3.73 axle ratio and I'm getting a combined 16.3 MPG, about 21 MPG with just highway driving. Do you think the axle ratio reduces the MPG?
Just curious, how fast are you cruising to maintain 21 mpg? Is your truck a 4x4 crew cab? I’m trying to decide between 3.31 or 3.73. I like to be able cruise 75+ and still get REASONABLE gas mileage.
@@jaysson1151 if this question is for me I actually have the 2wd so with the low highway gears and 2wd, my mileage is probably going to be at the higher end of the spectrum compared to most other setups.
@@jonathanaustin8841 thanks for taking the time to reply, but no my question was for Mark. Highway numbers have a broad range of variables, mostly affected by cruising speed. Although, terrain, weather, and fuel mix all have factors, not as much as speed. I’m coming from a 2012 XLT with the 3.5ecoboost with 3.73 and 4wd. It’s a 6000 lb tank and not exactly eco. Not expecting “Prius mpg”, but just reasonable for an all-weather highway cruiser. I’m 60/40 between a 5.0 or 3.5 and if 5.0 either 3.31 or 3.73. I plan to keep my next truck for at least 10 years like I have my current one. I don’t want to regret which ever decision I make. If either config gets at least 20 mpg at 75+ I’ll be happy.
Which feels bigger inside? Which one rides smoother? Which one has more comfortable seats? Which one has better headlights at light? What didn’t you like about the RAM?
F150 feels bigger inside Ram rode smoother F150 more comfortable seats Both have great visibility at night I didn't like the cylinder deactivation in the Ram and also didn't care much for the center console layout.
@@brent7368 I did know that but I read the difference in mpg gains is less than 1%. Pretty ridiculous to add that feature for that much of a supposed increase.

@@jonathanaustin8841 yeah I’m in the snow belt area so 4x4 is a must. I’ve owned a 2 wheel drive F-150 once, never again. I have a 2.7 in mine and I was wondering how you were getting the same mileage I was, now I know. Enjoy your 150.
The only way I would ever get a 2wd is if I was buying a classic and restoring it. Otherwise for daily driver 4wd it is. Especially when dealing with harsh winters.
@@jonathanaustin8841 Don't forget about the new oil pump"belt" too. Ford did away with the conventional gear driven oil pump and went to a belt driven oil pump in 21. Its supposed to be good for at least 150K miles. Damn I like that truck!
