At about the 29 minute mark the system starts adapting to figure out that slippery terrain you were attempting. But Everytime it was starting to work, you hit the brake. I think you would've made it up all of the way. But I know it was a risk. Good video!

Momentum is a cheap crutch for offroading. It can work but it's also a fanastic way to break and prematurely wear driveline and chassis components. The hardest but best method for offroading like this is slow and steady.

Eveeytime it started to slide towards the edge he stopped. Ryan has more experience off-roading then 99% of us offroaders since he does it for a living. I'd give him the benefit saying he knew the risk of slamming logs on the left (even potentially rolling it) was too high. He did slide left pretty hard couple times. Except he would have slammed the body on something in the approach angle or break over for sure. Watching the unibody flex whenever a wheel lifted off the ground, lacking skid plates and protection from the middle back, and the lack of 4LO and lockers make this the meanest gravel driveway vehicle at the shopping mall. Sorry, I'll give it more credit - at The Home Depot or Lowe's.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 2 года назад
@@keithgibbons92 Except no, sliding on mud is not a "slam", it's a glide. Meanest gravel driveway vehicle at shopping mall is nonsense. It can handle far worse than was thrown at it but that doesn't mean a more fit vehicle couldn't handle even more. There was nothing in the video that a mere FWD car couldn't handle, any FWD car from any era not something with traction control, as long as it had appropriate tires.
@keithgibbons92

@@stinkycheese804 Depth of field is lost in translation on RU-vid. The deep ruts and protruding rocks on this particular slide likely would have caused a scrape of the undercarriage, the approach, or worse, the rear axle. I wouldn't have tried an increased momentum run on this with a $36k brand spanking new grocery-getter either. This for sure was driver timidity, but I don't fault them for not trying.

I know being in front of a computer screen is much different than being there in person, but here we go. I own a 2009 Escape with a very similar AWD system. As such, this was extremely frustrating to watch. You kept giving up RIGHT as the truck was starting to adapt and send power where it was needed. Lockers are great and all, but AWD is much more capable than people give it credit for. It just takes an entirely different driving style, and wheel slip is going to be an accepted fact. You just have to commit and let the computer figure it out.

Please stop driving AWDs like they are a 4x4 with low range (i.e. stopping and crawling) it's getting old fast. As many, many others have mentioned a slight bit of constant momentum (including some tire slip) is required for the AWD system to figure it out. I don't own a Maverick (or a Ford for that matter) but I can hardly blame the vehicle for not making it up that. Say it like it is .. you don't want to go up there for your own reasons (scared, potential damage, lack of skill or whatever) and I can/will respect that. And yes, I do off road with full understanding that the "camera effect" is not like being there, as in, it is worse that it looks on video.

You were clearly afraid. I've come to accept that it's because you are used to much better. Coming at twice the price.. but certainly better. You have convinced me to not bother with the off-road package. In my youth I lived in the mountains but that isn't my reality anymore. This car with cargo capacity will make me happy enough.

I think the Maverick would have made it over the last hill, if the truck had some way to "lock" the rear diff like the Bronco Sport. Too bad it's not currently an option. Also too bad that you can't get the FX4 package with the steel wheels that come with XL trucks. Aluminum wheels have a tendency to shatter when you take a decent hit from a rock, whereas steel tends to deform. I know from personal experience.

I am so close to buying the FX4 Maverick, but really disappointed to see how shitty the software seems to be that controls the traction. There's no excuse for having two wheels stationary and two wheels spinning in the air. Even without a locking diff, the system should have braked those spinning wheels down to the point where the others got moving. Seems like this needs another year or two in the development oven before it's fully cooked 😃

I hope Ford will offer a 4-door Access Cab version of this for those who would rather have a longer bed vs seating for four. An option for 16" wheels instead of 17" or 18" would also be nice. A locking diff option and full time all wheel drive would be nice too. And hopefully the aftermarket will offer a lift kit soon. when I first took delivery of my 22 Maverick lariat with FX4 I went through a blizzard over the 80 they shut it down for chains and 4x4 only and I went thru it stock no chains with no issues at all... did great in the fresh snow and ice

Mikey, I have the non FX4 and was surprised I had the same experience as you with AWD and just the std street tires. I posted videos on my channel climbing steep snow covered streets in Park City. With all the big snow this year, I never had to put chains on once.

@@fordmaverickmaniac its a great little truck, first think I did was take off the aero flaps in front of tires.. better clearance and looks better. I own a tree servicing company and this truck had been good with off road and tight spaces

🎉 GREAT Video. Next Try the Maverick Tremor, 4WD Lock, Locking rear diff and more ground clearance. I will look into these BFG'a for myself among a few other tire choices

seeing this truck handle the wabdr makes me 100% confident it’ll handle everything I wanna do. I’ve ridden the wabdr 3 times on motorcycles. Always wanted to do it in a rig though. Guess this’ll give me that chance.

I’ll start off by saying I dont own a maverick yet. Researching now. I do own an Outback Wilderness so familiar with AWD systems. This guy really lacks off roading knowledge. I still like watching the videos, but he is SOOOOO timid. He tries to crawl over everything, never uses any momentum/or where spin, or he’ll “try some momentum” while he’s already in a compromised position (dude, back up to the flat ground to get momentum!) which leads to more wheel spin. For any of these modern AWD systems, you need to let the tires spin until the systems (whether a clutch system or independent brake system) figure things out. Every time the system starts to apply any type of influence, he brakes hard and starts back at square one! The reason he likes the 4Runner is because it’s not an AWD, it’s 4WD… totally dummy proof. You have to drive each system the way they were designed. For those saying momentum is how you break things, that’s only when you start bouncing around, bottoming things out. This muddy hill wouldn’t have created that outcome. Sure it undulated but not enough to damage. Also, momentum doesn’t mean 20 mph…. Shoot, 5 mph would’ve made the difference.

I take 20 Toyos on my GMC pickup on mountain roads in ID that make that road you are on a paved highway. Not sure why you state around 24:38 that you would not have had 20s and if so would have had flats. Makes no sense to me. Are my ventures more extreme? As stated yes. And when I lived in UT with a Hummer and a Wrangler...hell yes. But big difference in rock crawling in Moab vs. gravel roads in the mountains of WA, ID, or eve UT. AWD does not appear to be that great. Need some brake lock up and a force of sending power to the rears wheels. However, you stopped to much, should have powered through the mud. My suggestion is never go to Moab or even Ouray, unless you bring your depends.

would you recommend this over the Bronco Sport non-badlands trim if you like off-roading (not hardcore rock crawling)? The prices are similar.

They’re very similar and without the twin-clutch rear they have similar AWD capability. Now, does the FX4 AWD dirt mode do better than the standard AWD on Bronco Sport? Hard to say but it won’t be a major difference I would guess.

I own a set of trail terrains and love them .. I go off-road on trails like this one.. and more severe inclinations where you couldn’t make it up in a bit muddy wet snowy terrain and it does Amazon up hill 💪🏻 so it might have been more of the maverick not having the capability or strength to go up it .. I own a 2005 4Runner V8 4x4

I don’t know whole lot about offloading just a little experience with my bronco adventure that being said, I think if he put it at 25 psi in the tires, this would be an absolute piece of cake please someone else tell me what they think if you’re an off-road expert?!!

Maybe air down for that side hill where you lost traction. Starting to go sideways like that can brown your pants! Does traction control brake a spinning wheel on the Maverick? Poorman's locker.

Great review, again! I love your format of real world driving on pavement and typical offroad conditions. I wonder what a selectable compound low gear would cost in an automatic transmission rather than a two speed transfer case. Maybe a compound low gear and locking differential can be offered as options in the future.

Happy to see another one of your Maverick videos and I hope to see more. I have the same color FX4 Maverick (Though mines an XLT) with Toyo AT3s on it. I don't plan on doing anything more than what you're doing here. This comment section is falling victim to how difficult it is to show how tough a section of trail is on camera. You lose that sense of depth you have in person. I think you could've done that last bit with some Jeremy Clarkson brute force, but it would be foolish and dangerous with that drop off to the left. What other Aftermarket do you see yourself adding to it?

You needed more momentum to get over the first washout. The other 2 would’ve exposed the lack of break over angle on that truck but still could make it through. The GX470 would’ve gone through that washout easily.

Every time the system tried to overcome for lack of traction, you hit your brakes. You could see the power starting to shift.

I know that everything looks easier on camera, but I really think that some quick hands and a heavy foot could have gotten that truck up that hill no problem. Just steer into the slope and let 'er eat. The slow and steady approach could have worked with some traction boards or possibly a tug from the 4-runner.

I’ll never understand why anybody would put a lower profile tire on a truck. It’s silly, the benefit of a taller sidewall off-road is enormous. When you air down, it turns into a tank track, and makes punctures much less likely.
@johnt6673
@johnt6673 2 года назад
Worried about ground clearance on a basic gravel road? Lol. Tires will be a bigger concern here. Plus speed momentum will help here. The maverick would of made this no issue. Grow some balls here. A tad bit more speed you would of made it up, with no issue here.

I'm sure that last part was more difficult than the video shows, but from this perspective it seems like you tend to rely too much on the vehicle and too little on yourself and your abbilities. If I'm right, you had to pick a solid path, approach that section at about 10 to 15 mph and let the momentum get you through. I also know a little bit of trail improvement goes a long way, some small rocks on top of the worse parts of that section could give you the grip you needed
