I'd be interested to see any documentation that shows the Honda DCT learns your riding style. It has adaptive adjustments of the clutch bite points to ensure a long life, but the way you control what a DCT does is all through the throttle and HOW you use it. It recognises the speed of throttle change, fixed positions, gentle roll offs and roll ons, but this is all in real time. YOU tell it how and when to change gear by the use of your right hand. It takes a while to adapt and it does not reward people who ride using the the throttle like a switch.
@feloniousmonk3049
@feloniousmonk3049 Год назад
It, being like an Africa Twin, does reward the rider that rides and throttles smoothly.

Great and exhaustive review! And I love to see you guys driving in an active yet safe manner (anticipation, lines,...). This bike can attract people that chose big trails because there was no real alternative since a few years if you didn't like the sporty position of a Ninja SX. I believe the 3rd bike you were speaking about is the Honda CMX 1100 Rebel (custom like).

I currently own the Yamaha Tracer 9GT and was very curious of this bike when it came out. I went to test ride it and was positively surprised. I've ridden the DCT version and it was great. The bike hasn't done anything wrong, actually opposite. The looks is subjective but in my opinion it looks good, maybe not the prettiest bike out there but it's not ugly. The switchgear was a bit confusing but that's something to get used to. Great bike but unfortunately it wasn't as exciting as my Tracer 9GT :)

I thought Hepco and Becker did the Honda panniers. The accent panels on the panniers and top box seem to be optional. But,,, this motorcycle is outstanding and DCT is a superb revelation. I've got an XADV and I think all my motorcycles going forward will be DCT. The NT1100 is likely in my future! 😁

@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 Год назад
@@markholroyd5365 Yes, the XADV is really amazingly good. I only wish Honda had put cruise control on the XADV. One of the huge benefits of DCT is the comfort "old" hands get without having to clutch in traffic. Riding for 3+ hours and not having cruise control tends to tire my right hand a bit. But that is my only complaint on the XADV. I've ordered an NT1100 and to be honest I'm not sure which will be my primary ride! One thing for certain is my lovely BMW F900XR is likely to be destined for a new home.

I enjoyed the enthusiasm expressed during this review. Looks a reasonable spec bike but that screen design is awful for a touring bike. Surely it wouldn't have been hard to include a manual adjuster so you can change the screen from the seat....if I am touring and jumping between motorway and back rounds it's silly that you have to stop to adjust it....loads of manufacturers have different designs to allow this.

I would have !iked this in a diffrent colour option like the xadv. I'm also appreciating DCT for the same reasons. At nearly 70 yrs old I'm still a competent rider and motorcycle travel is a huge part of my life. But getting stuck in city traffic will be an uncomfortable period with my left hand. I have an XADV. It very very nice. I also have on order an NT1100! (not sure why and my wife is even more perplexed) 😅 But my heart is in sport/tourers. My sport/tourer at this moment is a BMW F900XR. A great machine but I'm now a DCT "disciple" so once the NT1100 arrives the BMW will be finding a new home. Then it will be fun to see which model will eventually be the "keeper". The XADV or the NT1100? Spoiled for choice! 😁

I would love to see thehike without the luggage on, as this is how I would often ride. A comment on side opening panniers- surely when you're touring, you unhook the panniers and take them with you into your digs? I don't have a problem packing it when its lying down, opened up. Thanks !

@walterverheyen1263
@walterverheyen1263 Год назад
The information that DCT learns how you ride, where does that come from? It says nothing like that in the manual. In my experience it just reacts through PGMFI to the way the throttle is used . In the normal drive mode, you can give a little throttle and it will shift op swiftly. When you give it full throttle, it will rev higher before shifting up. Therefore, I wonder why there even are sport modes. Shifting later with less throttle, that's all. Different mappings depending on the way the throttle is applied. You can call that learning, but it is in fact programmed.

Seems like a lovely bike...shame about the lack of shaft drive and the small tank for a tourer. I could probably put up with a chain if it had a fully enclosed chain guard. Increases the life several fold and keeps all the sh1t off the bike and easier to clean! I once quizzed a Honda management bod about the size of the tank on the VRF1200. His reply was how many miles could I do without needing to pee! My reply was the same as if I am in my car!! The silence was golden. Thanks Dave
@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 2 года назад
I think the size of the tank is not the objective. It's a result of general fuel consumption and tank size that gets you distance. The efficiency of engines these days is pretty good. The targets seem to be 200-250 miles. Depending on your speeds that's over 3-3.5 hours in the saddle. Seems OK for me. I've had bikes with 6.5 gallon tanks and others with 3.5 gallon tanks and they go the same distance. A really large tank is really no fun at fill up. Too heavy normally up high. My BMW F900XR has a smallish 4 gallon tank but yet I still get the 3-3.5 hours endurance. The stock seat is literally a pain in the ass so the 3+ hours is spot on.
@davidblundell3629
@davidblundell3629 2 года назад
@@sunrisejak2709 Each to their own Doug I guess as we are all different. I personally can do more than 3.5hrs but don't want to necessarily have to fill up just because I want a break, especially if the weather is bad. When I am ready for a break, I am usually no where near a petrol station. I would love a fuel range of 300miles before starting to worry about finding a petrol station but I take your point about the full tank weight. I have a 1250RT with 25 litres. If you keep around 60mph, it is returning around 55mpg. Increase to 70mph and your at 50mpg. 75 to 80mph and you are in the mid to high 40's. Living in Norfolk with no motorways means I typically average about 240miles leaving around 20 to run dry. All this with BMW's shift cam technology and 12000miles of running. Stay safe. Dave B

@@davidblundell3629 HI Dave, I'm with you. Perhaps the primary difference is that last month I turned 69 and my butt just isn't as "vibrant" as it used to be! Almost as bad as that old guy patient in the movie Hangover! 🤣 Hence my abbreviated seat time. 😊 Plus I live on Thailand and the heat can be a bit brutal at times so you're right each of us have our own expectations and limitations. But I admit a largish tank does provide greater flexibility and convenience. I had an older GS decades ago with a monstrous gas tank like 30 liters that dropped over the frame like a melted marshmallow. Oddly that's the only bike where I ran out of gas,,, pushing to see how far I could go on a full tank. 🙄 I just completed two nice rides. Northern Thailand mountains which is a "bucket list" ride with epic motorcycle roads and then south to the islands which was equally amazing. I did manage nearly 4 hour stretches in an economy type run. Wasn't too bad. The mountain ride though had some pretty poor mileage as it was a much faster pace. Great place to ride as you will never see flashing lights in your rear view mirror. Nearly zero enforcement. I'm waiting for the Moto Guzzi V100 to be released. That should have good range as most Guzzi's do and,,, fun. Sorry for rambling! Too much time on my hands. 😉 Cheers,

I am 67 so using you as a yard stick, hopefully I have another two years at least before I seize up!....27inch inside leg (not the middle one) means a GS was always out of the question. Besides all the positives, which are great (it a reliable Honda, nice styling, *_great engine,_* very good mirrors, cruise control, heated grips, comfort bike, good suspension, TFT, etc.). _Negatives_ 1st Neg.: For this type of bike (touring and town riding) I really, really wish it was *_shaft_* driven. Has a chain = a shame. 2nd Semi-Neg.: The DCT may be good on the NT1100 _but_ I would not get DCT due to the negatives (more oil filters, more oil, more complicated, more maintenance, heavier bike). On the Gold Wing I can see DCT but not anything else. On this Honda the *quick shifter* option is much better over a DCT transmission. My unbiased thoughts.

@@magnusjsvensson It depends on what GS are you talking about. The 1250 GS is heavier than the NT and the GSA is heavier than the GS. More over the NT shouldn't be compaired with the 1250. It's more likely in the same class with the RT and it much lighter than the BMW. I'm not a Honda fan at all but to compair a Honda with a BMW in terms of weight is not the right thing to do...

@@magnusjsvenssonHi, Sven! The 1250 GS/GSA is my dream bike. Didn't want to offend GS owners at all. I just looked at the specs and I took in consideration what the reviwer said about how he felt the NT's weight. On the other hand, I repeat, I'm not sure about the fact that the NT is in the same category with the GS/GSA.

Go find out the prices of the materials and labor to put them together and you'll be even more surprised at how ridiculous the price of bikes are set at. This is not a review but a promotional film. from point 14:10 you sound like you have found a pot of gold under the rainbow. Really any critical approach is omitted. It looks like you guys are his Honda promotion salesmen in disguise. There are at least a dozen critical points to note about this motorcycle and that is normal. But that you become completely lyrical about absolutely everything is very strange. I ordered this motorcycle myself, (partly because of the DCT application, because I have lost the clutch power in a few left hand fingers) but in the realistic realization of the dozen small and less small negatives which you have strangely avoided.

Why is it that so many motorcycle video makers thinks it's a good idea to commentate while riding the motorcycle? It is a much better format if you simply review the motorcycle whilst standing beside it. The sound quality is better and we get to view the motorcycle instead of looking at your view as you ride, which is a complete waste.

I'm 72 in age and would not want to be seen within 100 ft. of this perversion of a motorcycle. This dashboard is a dangerous distraction from the serious business of riding a ''bike''. Minimalism is what people are looking for today in a motorcycle, hence the retro craze. We miss the double-clocks and petcock reserves, and not having to look at a digital number instead of a tach./speedo needle seen with peripheral vision.
