The Hyundai Tucson is excellent. However, if you plan on taking many highway road trips, the plug-in hybrid is not your best choice.

Your battery was empty causing the gas engine to recharge it while you were driving, that's why your numbers were poor. Take the Toyota blinders off.

Great real-world review, I drove 1000 miles (1600 km) from NigraFalls to Washington DC and back in Dec 2021(Tucson PHEV), the outside temperature was around the freezing mark, avg came out around 30 mpg (8L/100km).

After owning a Tucson PHEV Limited for 3 months and driving a total of 1800 miles there are a lot of things I learnt, remember this is a not performance car so if you use it like one that is going to hit the mpg, I kind of got used to the fact the right amount of pedal you need to keep in order to keep car in electric mode while driving in HEV mode, I usually charge my car 80% battery and on highway I drive with HEV mode not full electric mode, and with optimal usage of acceleration I get around 36 mpg on highways, but yes if I have no electric only charge left it comes around 29. Try not to drive in all electric and automatically switch to HEV, on highways switch to HEV mode with "all electric charge" available you will get a better mpg

The test seems sketchy/invalid. I completely agree that basically nobody will leave on a highway trip with the battery completely depleted. The car might charge the empty battery, reducing efficiency. The addendum video which showed 26.7 MPG on a longer trip together with the 31 MPG on the shorter trip seems to indicate that either there's a lot of variability in fuel economy or that at least on of the test was invalid. Since it is a large range, I believe it is the latter case. I think the correct way to test highway fuel economy is with the battery NOT depleted, but doing at least one, ideally 5 tanks to be sure.

One thing to think about, the Tucson PHEV qualifies for $6,500 of the Federal tax credit while the regular hybrid doesn't. Also, considering a vast majority of most people's driving in something like this will be in the city, where hybrids and PHEVs fair better.

I love real world tests like this. Thank you for doing this. How would you say these numbers compare to a comparable non-hybrid, pure ICE, car in a real world test? Because the thing that appeals to me about these plug in hybrids is the fact that 80% of my daily driving is less than 30 miles. Meaning I can use it most of the time entirely as an EV. I think a lot of people are in the same situation for their daily driver. And the times I do take it out of town, as long as it's comparable or better to a similar gas only car I think I'm still overall saving right?
@michaelmcfarland5188

I purchased a phev for that purpose. Less then 30 miles a day. I don't use gas at all. So when I have to go on a long road trip It doesn't really matter what I get fuel wise. What's the real world test for a gas only in the city compared to a PHEV? That's why ppl are buying them. The Toyota prime is great but also cost 10-12k more at the top trim. That's a lot of gas money

I agree with your report. I did a similar test but at 65 mph and had 34.7 mpg. Starting with a full battery gave 55 mpg. Both were with out heater. Most of our driving is local, less than 10 miles and less than 50 mph. This is where this vehicle is at its best.
@rajatmahadevan9470
@rajatmahadevan9470 2 года назад
Also note that 33 miles is more than enough for everyday city driving, cars use up more fuel on low speed being in lower gears, that where electric comes as an advantage where the consumption is almost same in any speed, you will save a ton of money
@HalfDread87

Plug in hybrids are literally made to be plugged in. If you dont plug them in, youre using the engine to not only drive, but to keep the battery charged to a minimum level of around 10% or so and also running the other electrical parts. So yes, if youre the type of person who needs more than the rated EV only mileage and also purposely would do something like buy a vehicle specifically to not use it as designed or in the most efficient way, then dont buy a phev.
@fmrc69
@fmrc69 2 года назад
A PHEV is definitely unique in that if its used as a daily commute in around your neighbourhood to goto work, the grocery store, etc....and always driving right around or less than the 33 mph/50 kmh then you'll almost have an infinite gas mileage which is why I want one because that would be my use case....on top of that my office has EV plugins so I can charge my car at work all day and not even need to spend $ on electricity to charge it. If its used for long trips then it wont have as good mileage as a Hybrid, but will be close.

You can’t just drive a hybrid model car like a normal gas car IF you want to get the most out of the hybrid system and increase your MPG. I recently bought a 2021 Elantra hybrid then got a 2020 Sonata Hybrid and having driven both I can tell you that the hybrid system in both work different.

I think it depends on what your daily life driving is like rather than testing a long road trip vacation like scenario that you might only do once or twice a year. I think if you can daily commute 30 miles a day and not use any gas for weeks at a time will clearly offset a couple vacations of loss fuel.
@mowcowbell
@mowcowbell 2 года назад
Totally agree. Most EV/PHEV vehicle tests are totally biased by doing long highway runs. Who drives hundreds of miles a day EACH day? Most of us drive 20-30 miles a day, plugging in each night. I own a Honda Clarity PHEV and I go months without using any gasoline because my daily commute is far less than the 50 miles of EV range my vehicle is capable of.

Girlfriend has a 2022 SEL awd, it did 34.5 mpg (on the trip computer) on a recent 150 mile road trip averaging about 72 mph GPS speed, with < 100 ft of altitude change. The wind was likely working in our favor for that trip because on the highway it usually gets right around 30-31 mpg (according to the car's computer) -- which is what we got on the return trip. City mpg is around 18 mpg. I think the non-PHEV hybrid is the sweet spot in my opinion, 35 mpg basically all the time, and price difference is negligible to our non-hybrid. Only reason we didnt get one was bc it wasnt out yet last year when we were looking. Just good luck finding one now...

I would like to see a real world test. This is a great test if you drive 100 miles a day but if you actually drive 20-30 miles a day to and from work you would essentially use zero gas and only use electric
@matthewbecker6553
@matthewbecker6553 4 месяца назад
Speed and MPG are inversely related in any vehicle. And the Tucson PHEV does best when EITHER driving local where it is all-electric ... OR by hitting the highway with a full battery and keeping to under the posted speed limits. In ANY vehicle, you get about 10% better gas for each 5 MPH lower speed. If you go 60mph instead of 70mph, you will easily see or exceed the numbers that are advertised. If you go 65, you will be a bit short but not much. Keep in mind that if EPA numbers are based on 48 mph, you are going 25mph over the testing that the MPG is based on. That's 25mph higher wind resistance drag and that increased wind resistance drag will reduce MPG on all cars.

30 mpg is fairly respectable for a vehicle this size. Now you add the gas savings with the electric range giving you mpge's at approximately 1/3 the cost of gas plus regenerative braking and it makes sense (unless it is just a road trip car). It'll be nice when charging gets faster and available more places and battery costs and storage improves. I'd like to see something like this with a bigger batter and smaller more fuel efficient engine - that way you'd be getting around 90 mpge most of the time with the occasional gas useage..

Contrary to what you may have been told ALL PHEV's have a computer on board that does some things that you may not expect. For one that empty battery is not really empty at 16% even though you think it is... I have a PHEV and if you OR I switch to the energy screen you may see that energy EVEN while the vehicle is in gas mode still runs on EV mode while the vehicle is under power. Mine does and that is mainly to assist the engine reach it's target mpg rating. Mine is rated at GM saying between 47 & 48 mpg US from a 8.9 gallon fuel tank. Though mine does considerably better since I travel in Canada and we use a different system of measurement here than in the USA and our gallon is of the larger Imperial volume. So more bang for the buck... And as you can imagine more mpg as a result.

Driving with cruise control reduces your MPG efficiency because you are not coasting which should recharge the battery as you ease off the gas pedal. I think knowing how to use plug-in hybrid is very important. I drove 206 miles yesterday on Hyundai Tuscon plug-in (Ultimate) on a 70miles per hour (Motorway speed limit) and I average 38.1 MPG. I noticed that on one stretch of the road when I used cruise control, my MPG efficency was reducing faster to I took it off.
@Eugen-E
@Eugen-E 2 года назад
@@AlexDaniel-lx1ft Yes and no. If you don't use cruise control and you take your foot off the gas, then you loose speed (energy) and then you have to compensate this with an acceleration that consumes more energy. Even on hybrids, if you drive in a city with traffic jams you will consume more gas than driving on the highway - personal experience.
