Hi, I live in Kells, County Meath and I work in Dublin Airport. I travel in and out of Dublin for work 7 days a week. I currently have a 2006 Toyota Yaris 1.4 diesel, it’s still going strong but I have my eyes on a hybrid. The price of diesel is now approaching petrol, that’s why so many people switched from petrol to diesel 12 years ago. This is all because of the government’s regressive carbon tax but it’s so important to get the most out of your fuel tank.

@@RiasatAbir hey there !! I don’t have a cost on the battery but if Kona is bev with 64kwh is about 24000€ to replace , then the 13.8 kWh PHEV Battery could be €9000 or €10,000, but I wouldn’t look at it that way, most likely what will happen is this batteries will be repaired in the future by replacing cells instead of the full battery 🙂👍

Hi Brian, my English is not good enough, everything you apparently explain well and in detail about the differences between the HYBRID and the PLUG-IN-HYBRID (you also speak very quickly ... grin). I would like to see such a comparison for the rather large German-speaking car market! Hyundai is now one of the most popular car brands, the network of dealers / service companies is very dense! - We ordered a Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Prime version in Blue Teal a few weeks ago and unfortunately we have to wait until November at the earliest, and possibly even until January / February 2022! ... In England the purchase price of the PHEV is over £40,000 which means you will have to pay a premium on top of your annual vehicle excise duty for 5 years (approx £390.00 per year). So big saving on fuel economy is lost. I currently have a 2023 self charging Tucson Ultimate and achieving 50 miles per gallon. I managed to achieve 52 miles per gallon during summer.

Hi Brian, Matt from Canada here! Thank you for the detailed video. I am expecting a 2024 Tucson PHEV imminently. I'm a bit surprised by two observations you've made about the comparison...first, I've read that the performance boost of the PHEV (over the HEV) is quite pronounced, with about a second difference in 1-60 tests. Interesting to head you found them to feel about the same. On a bright note, I've also read that that cargo and rear leg room really suffers as a result of the PHEV battery, but pleasantly, you don't seem to notice a real difference between the two. You mentioned you expected a significant reduction in cargo area, but didn't really see it. I'm a TINY bit worried about rear leg room in the PHEV, but I think it's just
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for the very positive comment! I really can’t see any difference in terms of legroom in Ireland, the only real loss of space is underneath the trunk , and to be fair, most people never use that area anyway In terms of acceleration, this video might be useful, but it might surprise you also ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wUaBzz2V7qc.htmlsi=ugS3L-wujXcxhhQv !!

Amazing.....I have been trying to figure out how or where the cargo space is compromised in the PHEV, and this is the first example of anyone having the clarity to tell me it's underneath the trunk! That is a huge relief, and it really helps me visualize where the space is going. I watched the other video...yes, it's quite eye-opening. Kind of disappointing, as one factor in getting the PHEV was increased performance...but I guess it's still about economy. I live in Toronto, and the amount of gas I burn sitting in traffic (or moving very slowly) is ridiculous. thanks again! @@doolanbrian

@@mattg8205 I’m happy enough there is a very marginal difference between HEV and PHEV in space 🙂 One thing I would say is the PHEV gets off the line much better with 4WD than HEV with 2WD , especially in wet weather , which in Ireland is a daily occurrence 😵‍💫🙂

A million thanks, Brian. Total side-note....I am just finishing up a large screen animation which will play in the visitor center at the Cliffs of Moher. You Irish have more than your fair share of natural wonders. I hope we do the Cliffs justice. I'm asking about all this because I am receiving my 2024 Tucson PHEV in Ultimate trim in early March, and it's taking so long, I feel a bit of buyers....not remorse, but apprehension. I feel that in order to get the car some time this century, I agreed to certain things that I might not have otherwise. For example, truthfully, do you recommend agreeing to an extended warranty? I know there is another PHEV ultimate ready right now ah hour outside Toronto, and I think I could pick it up without the extended warranty....so I'm questioning the validity of the extended warranty. @@doolanbrian

Hi Brian, great video comparison between HEV and PHEV. I got my Tucson HEV top level trim AWD with all extra package features 2 weeks ago and so far I have driven tha car 1200 km and averagrd 5,3 l/100 km which I consider pretty good fuel economy. THe PHEV would have better fuel economy i f you drove it short trips but if you drive long trips it would consume more fuel when yo have no more battery power left because the vehicle is hevier than the HEV. I don't know how it is in Irland or UK, but here in Sweden the most saving I could make if I went for PHEV would be in annual vehicle tax. For my HEV I have to pay approx 600 euro/year in annual tax the first 3 years and after that approx 100 euro/year while for the PHEV tha annual tax would be arround 32 euro. That's because the swedish government introduced what they call "Bonus & malus" tax system which is meant to punish vehicles with high emissions. However the price difference between HEV and PHEV would be about 4500 euro more for the PHEV so I didn't felt it was worth it.

Hi Brian! watched a bunch of your vids this on the Tucsons this morning... Enjoyed them all and i have a suggestion for future comparisons of plug in hybrid/non plug in hybrids vehicles you review: Instead of referring to the Hybrid as "Full Hybrid" throughout the videos during your comparisons, i think its easier for you to say "Plug In Hybrid" And "NON Plug In Hybrid" each time you refer to one or the other. Its prolly just me, but it might be easier for others and for YOU too, each time you said Full Hybrid i had to remind myself it was the "lessor electric" of the TWO, but when my brain hears "FULL hybrid" its automatically computes it as, "nothing lacking" so i had to keep switching my thoughts in accorandance to what you were referring to... lol Just a suggestion, enjoyed your vids here in TEXAS : ) BTC

Hi Brian.... I recently purchased a PHEV (not from you but another dealer in ireland)... just shy of €50,000! I think it is disgusting that hyundai charge €350 (apparently cost price) for a charging cable (that you take to a garage). I brought my Phev went to charge in a garage and couldn't without this cable .... something no one tells you when you buy a plug in! Granny cable we have to keep window open all night!
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 2 года назад
Hey Maxine 🙂It looks like the PHEV Santa Fe and Tucson don’t come with the cable like the full EV cars .. I guess a lot of home chargers now come with a built in charger 🔌 gun that will plug into the car so it’s only really the public chargers where you need the cable … I think that it would be better if the car was €350 more and the charger was then included if that makes sense ??? If your using the granny at home I reckon it’s worth getting the charge point as it’ll be useful going forward long term 🙂
@Tenly2009
@Tenly2009 2 года назад
You quote the charging time of the PHEV from 0 to full - but that never happens. The lowest I’ve been able to get my battery is 12% and even then, the gas engine recharged it back up to 27% before I got home. Also - no matter what charging cable you use, the charging rate is displayed on the dash - so you don’t have to guess at what the rate is. The charger you demonstrated has several different settings - and you tested it at the lowest (6amp) setting. Most people would change that to 12 and be charging at twice the rate you quoted (5 hr to full) - 2.8kW. Charging from a level 2 charger increases the rate to 5.7kW and brings the recharge time down to about 2 hours.
@Tenly2009
@Tenly2009 2 года назад
The button on the charger changes the current flow - which changes the power delivered. It cycles through 6, 8, 10 and 12. If you have a 15amp circuit, you’ll want to set it to 12 and you’ll be charging at 2.8kW on 220V or 1.4kW on 110V (North America). The battery capacity is 13.8kW - so the math is easy if you know you’re charging rate. If your battery is at 50%, you need to add 6.9kW to it to top it up - so with the 2.8kW charging rate, it would take 2 hours to add 5.6kW and another 1/2 hour to add 1.4kw - so 2.5hrs to charge from 50% to full at home with 220V. Double that to 10 hrs for North America at 110V.
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 2 года назад
The quoted charge time of 0-100 is completely anecdotal .. it’s a question that customers ask so it’s one I have to answer regularly .. you give a more complex answer, which is very detailed .. I stand to be corrected on this but in terms of the rate of charge and the charge time being displayed on the dash, once you lock the vehicle the display turns off after about a minute or so and it is no longer available until you open up the vehicle again, I could be wrong with that was my understanding .. When you say you can change the settings on the charger, I am unaware of a button .. Just to clarify are we talking about the standalone charger that is in front of the dealership in the video? I will need to examine it closer🙂
@Tenly2009
@Tenly2009 2 года назад
@@doolanbrian Yes. The included charger has a button on it that changes the output. I think you have to push and hold until it starts blinking and then repeated pushes will cycle through 6, 8, 10 and 12 (amps). Push and hold again to set it to the displayed value. And yes - the displayed charging rate only appears for a minute or so when you first plug it in - and then again anytime you open the doors. I’m basing this on information and photos from other owners since my charging cable was stolen from the car at the dealership before I took possession on Oct 8th - and I’m still waiting for the replacement cable - (eta Nov 19th 🤦🏻‍♂️). I’ve been using an aftermarket 110V/15A cable that charges at 1.4kW to charge at home. The dash shows a 5.7kW rate when I plug into the Level 2 charger at the dealership - but I’m not sure if that’s a limitation of the particular charger at the dealership - or the car. I would think that if I had the right Level 2 charger on the right circuit, the vehicle could take a charge at up to 7.2 kW (and be filled from empty in less than 2 hours).

Hi Brian. For the PHEV AWD Tucson, you said when fully charged, on average the electric (only) drive will last around 50km. If my commute to work is 15km and another 15km to home so total of around 30km, if i charge it every night, does that mean i can just run all electric the entire time? Is it safe to charge it every night similar to charging my phone nightly on a regular basis? I will still put at least half tank of gas, as my reserve, I'm not going to leave it empty. I will need gas for longer errands or longer drive. I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks from Canada!

Hi there !! Since the video I have a little more experience! The realistic range is 40-45 kms depending on the outside temperature so technically you could drive EV each day On your 30 kms journey There is no reason you can’t charge the vehicle each day and the warranty is 8 years or 160000kms The only issue I see is when you choose EV , it’s a request rather than an outright command so eg if you put on the heater , the car reverts back to hybrid instead of EV , this happens under heavy acceleration also Hope this helps ! Wrong in the top spec the phev cost 7000 euros more than the hev. So not a mere 2000 difference. Also to install a loading pole at home cost 1500 to 3000 extra. Total difference is 10000 so after 10 years you break even

Hello. I wanted to know just how in/efficient is it to use PHEV without charging it regularly, or whether it's even a viable thing to do. The reason I'm asking is, in my country we can apply for a government grant to buy PHEV (but not HEV) in the amount of 5000EUR. So in essence a PHEV version of Tucson would come cheaper than HEV, but since I live in an apartment building, I don't have the option to charge it at home. How much less efficient than HEV would it be? Would it make sense to just get a petrol version?
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 3 года назад
Ok I hear you .. so from my understanding.. if you buy a PHEV and if you never charge it .. then it essentially just runs as a HEV .. so therefore there should be no difference in fuel costs .. does that make sense ??
@majogl188
@majogl188 3 года назад
@@doolanbrian Oh... Well one consideration i've come up with so far, is the PHEV is roughly 100-200kg heavier, so there is some inefficiency there. Number-wise, I'm not sure how big a difference that will make. To explain a bit more where this question is coming from, whenever i see a PHEV description, the writers usually take care to explicitly state that "PHEVs are designed to be regularly recharged", leading me to wonder if there is some increased wear&tear on some aspects of the vehicle when it is used simply as HEV. Anyways, thanks for your answer :)
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 3 года назад
@@majogl188 ok so the extra weight is a good point .. the battery weighs more and the AWD system weighs more as our HEVs are 2 wd usually so you make an interesting point .. Hmmm … the battery ‘should be charged regularly’ but it’s still too new for me to tell you how harmful it is not to charge as we have had no failures .. at the moment the car has an 8 year 160000 kms battery warranty so even if it did fail you have recourse … ok let’s go back your fuel efficiency question.. I guess with the added weight it will need more fuel … my usual experience from ICE cars is that a 2wd jeep will usually run about 5/7 mpg better than it’s 4 wd counterpart so we could extrapolate that number … so let’s say the PHEV is 15% harder on fuel if not charged … so then think .. how much your annual fuel bill in a HEV car … eg if you spent 50 per week in a HEV you might spend an extra 15% or €7.50 per week in PHEV ie around €390 extra per year .. so how much is the price difference between HEV and PHEV in your country ???
@majogl188
@majogl188 3 года назад
@@doolanbrian Wow that's really detailed. So according to the website, the HEV AWD Tucson is 37.290E, while the PHEV AWD Tucson is 39.790, so 2.5k difference. Also according to the tech spec sheet, PHEV is 169kg heavier... Also, found out that PHEV tank holds 10 less liters of fuel.
@doolanbrian
@doolanbrian 3 года назад
@@majogl188 ok so if the HEV was about €400 cheaper on fuel per year then €2500 divided by €400 means it would take over 6 years to break even !! For you it’s PHEV and maybe you could charge it once per week at a public charge station ???

In America you cant get any phev vehicles because of artificial shortages. Because i need a car i have no choice but to buy the hybrid and even that is not available. These will be a dime a dozen and will be cheaper with the tax incentives and credits for plugins. I wish i was in a situation to wait one more year to buy a car. My hybrid will probably be worthless in 3 years because they will have all the electric and plug-in options by then and all these bs shortages will be played out by then.

I simply say: Phew to PHEV! What a ripoff. The entire structure/drivetrain of a PHEV is so complex that surely, surely, the repair rate is going to be awfully high. Aside from such long term maintenance issues, here's my MAIN GRIPE: hybrids ROAR. Hit the accelerator, (my pet pedal, the petrol pedal, haha) and hybrids put out such a roar! What a PHEV ought to do, without the distracting process of touching a screen or pushing a lever, is to use electric power to accelerate and switch off electric power as soon as steady speed is maintained. That is ALL I ASK! And yes, it can be done!!! Should be done! What makes me such a roaring critic? I'll tell you! We have two cars at home here in the USA, one an IC (Internal Combustion) engine and the other one a 2018 Tesla Model 3. The Model 3 takes off like a rocket, silently, with nary a whimper! You don't know these maniac American drivers with their big hulking trucks and SUVs...out of nowhere they come up behind you, breathing fire up your arse! (oh dear, my computer tells me I've misspelled that nice word!) The Tesla leaves them behind breathing dust! :) But America needs another half decade to get its EV infrastructure to a level where range anxiety is eliminated. Take a Hyundai for instance. It uses the CCS DC fast charging. Well, most of the charge stations using CCS here in the USA are by ChargePoint and EVGo. They put out a measly 50 kW. Compare that to Tesla's 150 kW. You could of course have a well deserved nap while charging!

You would be 100% incorrect in your observations. I am the owner of my second Ioniq PHEV and will anxiously await the PHEV Tucson. In more than 50,000 miles On both vehicles I have done nothing more than change oil and rotate tires. Also the PHEV will fully recharge the large driving battery while driving in sport mode, 5th gear and the extra gas consumed in the 55 minutes to recharge is far far less the the cost at a commercial charge and you do NOT NEED TO STOP! Then you drive for another half hour or so in all electric mode and regain the extra fuel consumed in your average mpg. The Tucson works the same way as the Ioniq in this regard. Why reviewers never know about or report on this is beyond belief.

They are definitely a stopgap measure and I will certainly go full electric within 3 years. I live in southwestern Ontario Canada about 1000 meters from the US border and when the border is open, I regularly drive to California to visit my daughter ( 2400 miles) and to Texas to visit my sister (1400 miles). Just before the border closed in March 2020, I had gone to Houston, Texas to visit and the return trip of just over 3000 miles cost me $106 US $$ for gas. I know we pay much less for gas here in North America but the only time I plug in my Ioniq is at home in my own garage. In the middle of the night, off peak hours it costs about 65 to 70 cents Canadian to fully recharge if I am right down and it takes about 5 hours. I weekly update my North American map with charging stations and we are getting close to no more than 100 to 150 miles between fast chargers in most areas but not all. South Texas where I winter and the Dakotas and upper mid west are not acceptable yet.@@OnlineMD

We haven’t come across the issue on any of the vehicles we have sold. I guess any electric unit always has a fire hazard, I believe mobile phone chargers are one of the most common electrical fire issues in homes. So an electric vehicle or plug-in electric vehicle always will carry a similar risk.
