Obi Toppin actually had some really good and creative dunks. It’s just that he didn’t slam them hard enough. The impact of the dunks were too soft so the crowd couldn’t appreciate them
This! That's one of the most important aspects of a dunk contest dunk. VC had the ball going through the net like it was going 100mph. That's what made it historically great.
Got to feel bad for Obi Toppin. His dunks werent bad at all but got no reaction due to the lack of star power in this years contest and how much everyone else was missing so much... He needs to comeback next year and hope that a star does it aswell so he's not the only one
Stars themselves won't do any better dunks unlessl RU-vid dunkers come up with new stuff for NBA players to copy like in 2016, otherwise it will always be lacklustre
@@CaesarCassius nahhh you think lavine, morant, edwards, gordon, etc wont do better dunks? And sometimes its more on who's in the dunk contest than what they do on what brings in the hype just bring a 38 lebron and the hype is all around
In 2016, Gordon and Lavin reached the maximum point in class, in the skill schedule. After that, there was a decline. Slam Dunk Contest 2022 peaked at its lowest point.
Lol look at those final dunks. Just 5 years ago those dunks wouldnt even get them to the final. That backboard dunk by Obi has been done by Pat and he did it way more impressive. And he didnt even advance to final
That was a good contest alot of stuff was difficult, especially toppins last dunk that takes some good timing and skill don't sleep on this contest!...
My ideas to fix all star weekend (1 for each event or possible adds) 1. get rid of the moneyball rack in the 3pt contest... yes its cool to see shooters score a bunch of points but it kills the chance of a comeback if someone misses there moneyballs and someone makes all theres. leave the 5th ball money balls but the rack is to much and getting rid of it in my option makes the scores closer. 2. stop with the guard vs guard and bigs vs big in the skills contest... honestly this isnt that big of a deal but i just feel like anyone vs anyone would make it more interesting and wouldnt limit the amount of guards or bigs that can participate. 3. The dunk contest needs a lot of work right now, from the weak contenders to the overuse of props. What the league needs to do is either add charity money to it and makes it to where the charity that the winner selects gets a idk maybe 500k donation or someone like that, it worked out for the all star game maybe it will increase the amount of star power the dunk contest gets... 4. If they dont plan on changing anything to the dunk contest what they need to do to save all star weekend is give the fans what they want... a 1v1 tournament, realistically i cant see this being that crazy after the 3rd year since most of the stars will have already competed if any do, but still it would help take a lot of the pressure off the dunk contest as the main attraction... also give it some kind of prize pool aswell to get people to compete more that once if at all... 5. something that would be very easy to add that the fans might not care for but the players might is make logos for the the events and let the winner were it on there jersey for the year as bragging rights... some examples of this would be the C for captain on the NFL jerseys or the nba trophy on the defending champs jerseys, MAYBE even give them a title belt that they can have until the very next event and if they want to keep it they have to defend it, because lets be honest title belts are some of the coolest things ever and who wouldnt want to be known as the dunk contest champion or 3pt contest champion
last year was way worse, at least there was something interesting with cole's first dunk. Last year was just horrible. The winning dunk was meant to be a kiss the rim and anfernee didn't even really do that.
Toppin dunks are extremely difficult. Among the most difficult ever. The problem is that it has no style, unlike lavine for example. Otherwise the green dunk (inverted 360 between the legs) deserved better. He had to go to the final.
@Arsenio Buck That is true. Ticket costs have become so high that your regular working class folk can't afford them. The working class knew how to make noise, the rich folk just treat the game as a day out and you see a lot of females just staring at their phones. But I think the crowd would have been more hyped if big name players weren't scared of entering the dunk contest. But you're right, crowds today do not bring the same energy crowds in the 80s and 90s did
@Arsenio Buck and who is suppose to be vince Carter in this year's dunk contest? You want the crowd to get hype over a basic ass Toscano or Obi dunk? Over a Green miss? Even if the crowd was hype that doesn't change the fact these dunks fucking suck and that the biggest name here is a struggling rookie. Crowd isn't the problem it's obviously the contestants
Obi Toppin has the athleticism and hops to be amazing, he just needs some creativity. It'll never be anyone really beyond their 4th-5th year in anymore, too much risk for a fan service show. Love to see an off the board mid air catch air jordan from free throw line. Or the coveted 360 free throw line jam.
Zach and Aaron was really good but nothing compares to Vince Carter. He changed the way people dunk and he did things we had never seen before. VC for life. MJ and DW was goat worthy too lol. Not to mention these guys made dunks first try.
second best, nothing tops MjvNique88. It was way more hype for them. You had the best scorers in the game, best players in the game. Mj and Nique both having MVP seasons up to that point. When they played against each other it was a battle! always! Wilkins would have 45, Mj 43, or MJ 61! Wilkins 45, so people knew the dunk contest was gon be super lit in a rematch. It should have been rematch number 3. Nique was injured in 87. It was always speculation they could meet in the playoffs although that happened later on in the 90s. Far more hype. People overseas wanted to see it. For Zach and Aaron, not so much. despite being very entertaining. Neither of them is MVP calibre players, although great dunkers. Nobody cares about when they play each other. crickets. so the hype is mediocre for them. the hype was only by surprise and at the moment. That's it. MjvNique was hype for their entire career! The dunk contest is boring as usual.
To make the contest more interesting they should compile a list of the best dunkers throughout the year and let the fans vote for who should compete in the contest.
to be fair some of the dunks Toppin did are exactly the kind of technical dunks Kilganon & Co are doing. Those tap the backboard first then dunk it are very popular among pro dunkers at the moment
Anthony Edwars, Ja Morant and Zion should carry the torch for the new generation of NBA players next season. I also think the league should take control by choosing the best and most athletic "in-game dunkers" to participate.
@@daebak7370 Name the Three Main Drugs you on!!!! Cause tou can't be just a normal Addict. How you Mean Cole better than JA!! The chit he does in Game picture him with time and no Defender!
Man, that’s tough. Dude from the Warriors tried to have a legendary dunk contest and was just coming up a bit short. I really like the effort and ideas, just off on the execution.
That was a dunk but it is just smooth and there is just no “WOW” factor or explosiveness on the rim and a dunk is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air, controls the ball(s) above the horizontal plane of the rim, and guides the ball(s) downward through the basket with one or both hands contacting the rim.
Judges tougher then I've ever seen. That dunk Green did that went in-between the legs then reverse dunked one handed more then deserved a 50 Ridiculous!
There needs to be a much better vetting process for who is allowed to compete in the dunk contest. I like all of these guys as players, but this Dunk Contest was trash🗑.
Toppin dunks are extremely difficult. Among the most difficult ever. The problem is that it has no style, unlike lavine for example. Otherwise the green dunk (inverted 360 between the legs) deserved better. He had to go to the final.
These days now there are professional dunkers and we see them all over social media every day so we have high expectations from nba players in dunk contest, but they train everyday at improving basketball skills not jumpin to get creative dunks like professional dunkers do. So it is what it is, once in a decade we have exceptional athletes who can get creative at dunks like jordan, vince or lavine, but for now I think we have to wait a few more years to have that
the dunk contest needs to have some kind of "golden buzzer", in case a dunk is exceptionally above 50, and that buzzer should only be used once per round.
Slam dunk contests needs to end, there aren't anymore dunks people can do, everyone just keeps doing the between the leg dunks. We have seen it a bunch of times
İ think they should include some sort of coop dunks. İt seems like players run out of ideas at this point. But imagine a dunk contest where 2 players have to work together. That would be interesting. And no i am not just talking about simple lob passes or stunts im talking about actual cool stuff.
I got 3 dunk 'ideas' that would DESTROY the competition & rank in the Top 10 All Time. (If not the Top 5) Granted, I would use props., BUT THEY WOULD BE UNFORGETTABLE!
