The sheer patience of that trainer is possibly the most exceptional part. This lot clearly has a ton of work to do in this example. I bet they act with more discipline now 2 years later wether many even made the cut.
what people dont seem to realise is this is the recruits first PT session and its an introduction to the gym. The next session will be a very different experience.😂🤣😂
The first words I ever heard from our CQMS were: 'Stand still and shut up or I'll kick you in the bollox!' as we were waiting in line to get our first kit issue. They was great days in the forces back in the '80s, loved every second of it.
Lt to me "Soldier your a dung beetle.... What are you" Me to Lt "I'm a dung beetle sir" Lt to me "Well done lad....you might be officer material" True story.
Similar story from the gym. PTI to my mate House "how old are you House?" House "19 staff" PTI "19 and your fucking deformed?" House "Yes Staff" PTI "What are you?" House "19 and fucking deformed Staff!!" I loved the Army and later became a PTI
Sgt: "Mr. C have you shaved today?" Me: "I don't shave yet Sgt!" Sgt: "Don't shave yet? No wonder you're at Sandhurst Mr. C, you're clearly fucking Officer material, aren't you! Bet your mothers proud!" Me: "I thought you were my mother Sgt?" Sgt - straight-faced and then burst into laughter. "I know I'm going to like beasting the fook out of you!"

@@rockywr I totally agree with you there are strong women that can take more then some men. But in my experience around 80% of men can do it fine while maybe 10% of women can make it. Keep in mind this is not basic training but the Jäger. I believe maybe 30-40% of women can make it. But the question is also how mentally strong you are.

All I seem to remember from basic training 1980s was pain and doing Bastard's, staff did not talk to you as if you had anything worthwhile saying ,you were a lazy shit bag wanker if you went sick!!! ,upset if you were spoken with in a slightly offending manner WTF confusion about what gender ???? sure I was going to have a friendly chat with the staff ,didn't like being called a lazy ginger TWAT ,more like I would have woken up in the MRS then be put on a charge for kept on attacking the PTI fist,PTI being way too nice ,you guys know what a press up is ?,you certainly would by the end of the lesson 😵😰, then again it was fun thinking about all the things you could do when you were 18,being 51 now and feeling the pain in my back and shin's 😁. Good luck guys with your training 👍🇬🇧
Thank you for this video! I’m meant to be starting RAF Phase 1 in October if i pass my 3 day assessment beforehand and this is giving me a good insight into what i can expect. Cheers 👍
If you're referring to pre recruit training course, its not pass or fail mate and will most likely be two days if you've got all the relevant certificates (GCSE/Functional skills). You do a fitness test on the Wednesday, level 9.10 on the bleep test, easy if you train for it, 20 pressups in a minute and 35 situps in a minute, again both easy if you prepare for it. My advice would be to turn up dressed smart, don't fidget when you're stood outside and only speak to corporals when they speak to you or when you have a question. If you've got your certificates you'll go home around 3PM Thursday

Everyone saying the arm has gone soft, this is the "sick" platoon they're technically not in training untill they get better and rejoin their platoons or be backtracked into another, so the pti isn't as strict on them as he would be on a platoon that isn't sick
this is so helpful, gives you some insider knowledge to mentally prepare so it won't be completely unfamiliar-if you learn beforehand it'll only get easier!
All these old timers saying “snowflakes” or “if that was in my day I would’ve been told to fuck off and got punched”. Times unfortunately change and the generation we are currently in mental health being a large killer of both males and females. Basic training is still hard nobody can deny that, me being through it myself and not really bothered about the words or physical punishment used against me can still safely say that it is hard. Regardless of whether or not it’s gone soft as some may say, having the ambition and motivation to get through basic and out your comfort zone is as hard as it can get for some people. Think rather than comparing it to how it used to be, be proud that people are joining up?
Ohh this brings back memories, the the climbing walls weren't there when i was training at pirbright. Meny a time i walked in the gym, I was very good at press up's after 3 months:)

Those seeking a military life should be aware that the nearest Legion recruiting post (P.I.L.E) is in the city of Lille. The first contract is 5 years, if you pass the selection process and finish basic to become a Legionaire. Did my basic training at Pirbright when it was the guards depot and it was hell on earth that was 1986 . I know times have changed but can't believe how soft the training regime has become . All the instructors and even kitchen staff were horrible to you, you never got a second spare to do anything and if you weren't marching you were running or cleaning kit, but like I say society has changed but I don't know if it is for the better . When you went to scoff you had to march with your kfs behind your back along Adair walk and nco,s were spaced all the way down and used to rift you if you werent sharp enough. The timings were tight and sometimes you no sooner got your scoff than your platoon staff would come screaming at you outside outside before you had time to eat it, result not enough calories and weakness on the runs usually resulting in lads jacking in . I lost a stone in the first week and I was only skinny to start with . Out of my intake only 25 per cent passed out . I always thought the training was too harsh and got rid of some lads who would have made good soldiers , it all depended on your ability to handle the bullshit .

@Kevin Adamson. I joined in 89 JLR RCT and I agree with everything you described. Out of 36 guys in our troop at the start of training only 17 passed out. 42 weeks of training and it was harsh but fun in equal measures! The beasting in the gym were legendary!! Did 10 years and signed off. It's the best and worst time of your life and I don't regret a single minute of it. Hope you had a good time in the guards!! Stand easy!
I remember cpl illsley he was filling in for our section commander for 3 section peninsula troop on final fling and he did an awesome job and did wonders to our fit ness things like “I gave you 36 seconds you where 1:20 add that on to the 200 seconds you owe me 1 minute is about 600 seconds so you owe me about 12 minutes ... press up position down” “Complatansy Kills” And “that’s 3 mister minies”
People tend to form far more tight-knit units when everyone's respected and talked to as equals. Shouting insults just makes people quit and do something else with their life - life's too short for all that.

Right! They're not even yelling and abusing them either! British instructors seem less tough but when they are, it's for good reason whereas US marine instructors just seem more tough because they think being like that all the time is better.

Lloyd Kelso They May seem that way to you, but at the end of the day the British Army is the best in the World and does its talking on the Battlefield. I’m Ex British Infantry when Training was a lot lot harder than this, I’ve done exercises with the US Army and they couldn’t even keep up with my Regiment or soldier anywhere near as good as us. When it comes to the crunch, the British Army from whatever era fights above it’s weight, always has and always will, on the Battlefield is where it counts.
jazz322alllwaysswing Ah you’re Queens Div, Poacher or Viking/Pompadour? Yes 1 Mercian now, all these cutbacks have destroyed our once great Regiments, but we and the New Regiments would still perform better in all aspects than the Americans.
You are the best in Great Britain. We are the best in the United States. When we train together we will always say that we are better and you will say that you are always better, we are allies. I was in the Air Defense Artillery and I was a stinger team Chief and I was damn good at it. I've even seen videos of United States military basic training today and it is so much easier than when I went in in 1978. I was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division from 89-92. I loved every single day of it. I retired from the reserves as a SSG. I hope you have a better day tomorrow. AATW!!!!!
Such a polite instructor. All I remember is lots of shouting, swearing and sometimes thumping, wacking and slapping. And PTIs were the worst. That was in the mid 60s.
I was the "Windows" person and being tall I got it in the neck most of the time -- others weren't as lucky as me and had it even harder especially the lower in height people and being a bit "whimpy".
Have you done any recent tours to Africa or Cyprus? I'm unsure if the American tour is still on. I looked at joining or even joining the reserves and the hard parts haven't put me off but the little petty things such as shaving everyday and getting a my hair cut very short on top. It may seem silly to you because you are used to it and joined a while ago but they really put me off, especially the shaving. I know it has put quite a few people off joining the reserves because it affects their outside daily lives.

Regarding shaving, yes we have to do it unless your following a certain religion that forbids cutting hair. In the 70's there was never any carrying of water bottle, you already had your 'pumps' on which were shiny black with polished canvas (yes we did).
