2022 RAV4: Why you should only consider 3 of the 8(!) trims

This is a comparison video that dives into the main differences of the 8 trim level options of the 2022 Toyota RAV4 (LE, XLE, XLE Premium, SE, XSE, Adventure, TRD, and Limited), including the AWD and Hybrid variants, and which ones I recommend. The RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid) is briefly discussed as well.

CORRECTION: As a viewer rightly pointed out (thanks!), the TRD trim does come with a stainless steel front skid plate as standard (that was introduced on TRDs for the 2021+ model years). That still doesn't change my general opinion that the TRD isn't worth the additional cost, and a front skid plate still doesn't protect all of the underbody components, but it is something. Also, you can buy the skid plate as a standalone part from Toyota for approximately $400, and it should be a pretty simple install on any model.

fuck a hybrid more costly to repair keep it simple STUPID, this whole ''clean energy'' going green it's all a fucking scam lol, you cannot even build these vehicles or materials without fossil fuels, what ev is about is locking customers/3rd parties out of repairing their vehicles.
@drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
Given surveys have shown over 3/4 of Americans don't know how to change their own oil, I don't think a hybrid powertrain is what is preventing people from repairing their own vehicles. Major hybrid powertrain components also must be warrantied by the manufacturer for at least 8 years and 100k miles (and in some states it's 10 years/150k miles). Lastly, given hybrids have been on the market for 20+ years at this point, I think we're past the initial teething pains (especially those using Ni-mh batteries). Heck, direct fuel injection was a "complicated" technology at one time too, and now well over 50% of all cars sold in the US utilize that.

@@drivetorun4172 fuel injections been around since the 1950s avalible option on chevy bel airs, it didnt get wildely adopted untill later tho, but most mechanics dont even know how to work on hybrids tbh, it's just best to go all motor naturally aspirated and fuck the turbos also ''K.I.S.S.'' old military saying keep it simple stupid.

@@billybobbob3003 I understand that you are frustrated by the complex technology that all vehicles have. I chose a naturally aspirated engine to avoid complicated and expensive repairs, but tady's cars are far too complex for a DIYer to repair. even basic maintenance items could require costly tools and hours of study just to understand the new design of a modern car. You have the most comprehensive video about the trim levels of the RAV4 5th Generation, regarding the cost. On top of the mark up as you mentioned, the dealerships may not have the colors and trim levels you might want. But overall your video is an excellent source of information to take a good decision of getting the most value for your dollars.
@drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
Very true--particularly if you are in a smaller market. I'd look at your nearest metro area where hopefully there are more dealers which will drive some of that mark-up down (I've got at least 10 Toyota dealers within 30mi of my house, and I've found multiple that aren't charging any mark-up). Even with that though, you are correct that finding the color or trim you want still may not be easy.

I appreciate the comments and input. Just a few suggestions if you are planning to continue: 1) might be helpful if you get a better microphone for clarity. 2) I respect your opinion, but I think I disagree that there's certain trims. I think would be better if you mentioned what you lose out of each trim, how much more would it cost, and who might be interested in it. There was a time in my life that the LE was the only one I would have been able to afford. The XLE is an excellent option. The premium is really nice, and I agree, there's a reason why I think these are the two most popular selling. I just got my XSE hybrid. I wanted the power moon roof. I do like the outside trim a lot more. I go up to the mountains a lot, so the pano moon roof is excellent when I have passengers in the back and they can't see the beautiful view I get to see. The limited... A lot of bells and whistles, but if you have the money and it's worth it to you, I respect that. As far as suggesting other cars. I checked out every car that was suggested to me while I was shopping. And this one fit on my needs for being practical yet rugged and versatile. I know there's some higher end cars or more affordable similar SUVs, but I could go down the list and tell you why each one didn't work for me. Thanks for the input though. Hope mine was helpful

Really great break down. I have three family members who bought this gen RAV4, first one bought the Limited AWD Hybrid, which features a kick to open hatch feature. That was removed when a Toyota spec trailer hitch was added. Next member bought an LE AWD Hybrid. Now the third member has ordered and XLE AWD Hybrid. All Canadian, so specs are slightly different to this. And now there are used Primes on the market...for $10-$15k over new prices.

Yeah the Toyota hitch integrates into the rear bumper right where the sensors are, at least that's how the couple installs I've seen were done. After market hitches sit under the bumper and might not interfere with the sensors.

Thanks for the info! TBH, I feel like the kick to open hatches are a bit more gimmicky than actually being useful. I've never been in a situation where I've thought to myself, "I really wish I could just swipe my foot under the rear bumper to open the hatch," but then again, I've never lived with one that had that feature, so I could be wrong.

As a Toyota technician, I think this video kind of bypasses the differences between the radio/head units between the different trim levels. If you care about things such as navigation, automatic SOS services, remote starting, and audio quality, then the "in between" trim levels make a lot of sense since there is a total of difference between the Audio, Audio Plus, Premium Audio, and Premium Audio with JBL. The cost difference for the in-between models makes more sense in that way. A small thing to note too, the LE trim cannot have roof crossbars installed since it doesn't come with the roof rail system- another strike down for that base trim. Otherwise, great video! I wish our salesmen knew even a third of this.

Just last week, I bought a 22 Lunar Rock XLE AWD non-premium. They'll bury us in this so I went without the Hybrid option. Even though it has a great warranty on the Hybrid aspect, I don't want to caught with super high dollar repairs and possible obsolescence when we've gone beyond 10 years as we intend to. It's MSRP was $33,847. It has the XLE "CP" Convenience pkg including Moon Roof and Power Lift Gate. Also has the XLE Weather "CY" pkg that includes Heated Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, Rain sensing wipers that are also de-icing with heat. Only other thing we would have liked was Leather so for $700, I'm DIY installing Clazzio Perforated Leather seat covers front back of my color choice and I guarantee even the sharpest eyes would say they were factory seats, they're beautiful! For $250, I'm DIY adding a Draw-Tite trailer hitch that doesn't reduce clearance, and will DIY add a larger transmission cooler for a couple hundred bucks which I do on most all my vehicles because heat is the killer of transmissions...period. I just added really nice Diode Dynamics LED SAE Driving Lights in the fog position. Just bought some crappy halogens on Amazon for $50 to get the new panels for the bumper and also got the harness, relay, and an OEM style switch for the left side dash where I have an empty spot. That project ran about $400 but is ultra high quality gear. Already Plasti-Dipped the OEM 17" wheels matte black and they came out awesome. Next is some 245/65/17 All Terrain tires and we're done! This is my second Toyota and I have fallen in love with it aftrer just 2 weeks of ownership. My first is a Tacoma TRD Off Road Dual Cab Long Bed I bought 6 months ago. Another incredible machine!

My two cents...in this market, your biggest leverage is probably your trade-in (if you have one). Do a bit of legwork and get offers from Carmax, Carvana, Vroom, etc. and know what the highest one is before heading into the dealer.

Purchased the TRD Rav4, and I do not regret it one second. It is beautiful, works for me and it met every check mark I was searching for and then some. Do we really need a TRD rav4? If I buy a corvette, do I have to take it racing. Sometimes, purchasing a vehicle is about appreciating the machine it is. Like who needs a Lamborghini SUV. Get the car you want and dont let anyone say its not for you.

Hi, I liked your video very much, could you please make a video comparing the corolla Cross trims with RAV4 trims and based on standard features which one makes sense to buy. Thank!
@drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
Thanks! I probably won't do a specific Corolla Cross to RAV4 comparison, but if you hadn't seen it already, I did a trim analysis of the Corolla Cross too (here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oXS-BPXF20I.html). In my opinion, if you were planning on getting a gas-only powertrain and don't plan on using the rear seats much, I'd go with the Corolla Cross over the RAV4. However, if getting a hybrid or having more rear seat space is important to you, then the RAV4 makes more sense. I hope that's helpful!

Thanks for the informative video, I've been watching this over and over again because I am thinking of getting maybe a hybrid xle or hybrid xle premium. I noticed that the battery between the two trim is different. Does it matter? Which is better? Is weather package reasonable to add or I could just add a heated seat on xle hybrid?
@mistym0rning
@mistym0rning 2 года назад
Not an expert, but I do believe there is no option of just adding “heated seats only” to the XLE. As far as I understand, you’d have to add the whole XLE weather package.

@@mistym0rning ohhh, then why this toyota salesperson told me that they cannot control what model or package it could have. It depends on the delivery of the maker. Because when I talked to them, I specifically told then that I want the weather package and he suggested that if its not available they could just add the heated seat in their facility. Am I being fooled by this dealership person or they just want additional income?

Thanks! Different colored rims are really subjective in terms of whether that's a plus or minus (I know people who feel strongly in both directions), and the different color really doesn't cost much more for Toyota to make, so I tend not to call that stuff out to justify spending more for a particular trim.

@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
You're welcome! 1) Yes, but I'm not sure if any of them offer wireless CarPlay/Android Auto (meaning you may have to connect your phone with a cable to have those platforms work). 2) None of them come with a wireless charging pad as standard. It's optional on the (Hybrid) XLE Premium, TRD, (Hybrid) Limited, and (Hybrid & Prime) XSE. And honestly, if wireless CarPlay/Android Auto isn't available, then the wireless charging pad almost becomes a moot point because most people will connect their phone with the cable to get CarPlay/Android Auto, at which point, their phone will charge through the cable anyway

Love your videos. Easy to understand which trim is the best. Will you have time to do a video for cr-v vs rav4?
@drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
Thank you! However, unfortunately, I probably won't be doing direct head-to-head comparison between those two. My videos are generally targeted at people who have decided which car they're going to get, but haven't decided on the trim. I do that because I haven't driven all these cars myself, so it's hard to say which one is a "better value" without getting personal experience with the respective powertrains, etc. Taking the RAV4 and CR-V as an example, for the gas models, the RAV4 is powered by a naturally-aspirated engine with an 8 speed transmission vs. the CR-V that has a turbo engine and CVT transmission. Those powertrains will have a very different feel to them, so the best thing to do is go and test drive and see which you prefer, and then decide a trim from there. Sorry I can't be of more help!

@@drivetorun4172 I learn a lot watching from your vids. I watch many times in between both of your vids and you help me to eliminate a lot of what if to pick those trims. @drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
Thank you so much! Yeah, at this point, I feel like automakers should either offer a panoramic sunroof or no sunroof at all. The traditional sunroofs just seem so small nowadays. Unfortunately, I don't think I have anything super novel to say that you probably haven't considered when deciding between the Camry Hybrid and the RAV4 Hybrid. I'd go Camry Hybrid if you don't need AWD and you log a majority of your miles on the highway (that's where the Camry Hybrid does significantly better than the RAV4 in terms of MPG)...you can also get a red interior on the Camry if that's your thing. Helping from a practicality standpoint, the Camry does at least have fold-down rear seats. One other thing to keep in mind is that the Camry is 10" longer than the RAV4...that might be a deal breaker depending on your parking situation. Good luck in your car search!

We have our name on the list for a prime and plan on keeping it for 100 to 150k, calculated out the savings in fuel and hopefully good resale and that seemed to be the best bang for our buck in an all wheel drive platform

@MilkyWayGalaxyy
@MilkyWayGalaxyy 2 года назад
The prime keeps getting more and more expensive. Why is it so popular? You have to hire an electrician and install a wall outlet in your garage for it. It costs so much. The hybrid batteries will need to be replaced at some point which is at least 2k more. Where do you sell it for resale? The dealership? Bc they always rip you off.
@drivetorun4172
@drivetorun4172 2 года назад
@@MilkyWayGalaxyy I think there are a few reasons why the Prime is popular. Depending on where you live, the incentives can make it so there's really no additional cost to buy a Prime vs. a standard hybrid. Additionally, if your commute is less than 40 miles a day, you could end up never having to buy fuel, but you still have the gas engine as a back-up if you need to go on a longer trip (for those who have range anxiety with full electric vehicles or only want one vehicle in the garage, a plug-in hybrid is a good compromise). Finally, the RAV4 Prime is the second quickest vehicle Toyota offers (behind the Supra), so there's potentially a fun-to-drive/performance element to it too.
