I understand that, however as the first production electric truck to come to market, you can’t deny the interior, the distinctive exterior and all the small touches like the stovetop are all innovative in the truck segment.
i don’t know. i find the exterior to be cartoonish and a little childish looking. maybe it’s the headlights and the soft edges. doesn’t have a particularly mature or masculine aesthetic to it.
@@markplott4820 The new world order will be banning gas autos shortly so Rivian will be fine for at least a few decades. And a midsize truck will sell in Europe and Asia.
It's easy to root for these startups when they execute. These older companies stifle innovation with their bureaucratic layers and I won't even start on the historically bad dealership experience. It'll be interesting to see if Rivian can execute on all fronts (technology, manufacturing, sales and service).
Unless rivian has a socialist belief or ideology then they will sell to the big players. And any innovation/invention/clever ideas will be sat on the shelf. This is how big corporations truly stifle innovation and invention. My prediction : in 5 yrs from now ford will own it.
@@doscwolny2221 I'm having significant struggles with your premise that a small company that doesn't sell out to a bigger company has a socialist ethos. Logically that doesn't follow.
@@jayjuggrnaut yes it does it simple. We all want a comfortable life, so we sell out because the cards will be invariably stacked against us. That’s actually smart business. Build an idea , make it a threat and then sell. That’s what happens to the vast majority of successful startups. Unless you are passionately socialist( which most people aren’t) then you are in it for the immediate( your life time) gain.
@@mikeb1039 Not really. They sacrificed bed space and behind seat storage to offer that. Makes for a tiny 4.5' bed, same size as a Maverick or Santa Cruz. With the tonneau cover it has less cargo space than a Honda CRV. If you have small stuff you can break out into three cargo spaces, I guess that's fine, but that's typically not why pickups are bought. The Lightning is going to have way more usable space for a lot less money.
@@plmn93 I agree this is not a truck for anyone that uses there truck for work. While it is a nice truck and great for a startup the truck guys that go electric will stick with FORD I think.
One thing I'm liking about the Rivian, is that it appears like it will perfectly compliment an off grid large acreage property. Excellent off roading, portable power, good enough towing for heavy equipment, and no need to worry about oil being nearby. Assuming you have ample solar, you'd potentially be able to manage a large parcel of land without needing to rely on purchasing gasoline.
The truck is a home run as far as I'm concerned. Gorgeous interior, and TBH the starting price for what you get is respectable. You can get a Supercrew 4x4 Lariat PowerBoost F150 to the Mid 60's MSRP pretty easily, and I don't doubt the F150 lightning with similar specs will be the same price or more, and that's from an incumbent automaker, not a startup. Go Rivian, Go!
A starting MSRP of 70k for a mid size pick up is respectable? You also can't compare any full size pick up's to this, it's in a totally different class. The Ranger, Colorado, and Tacoma have a starting MSRP of 30-35k. Might as well compare this to a 3/4 ton pick up, which it bombs at. Even the full size picks up have a starting MSRP of < 40k.
Idk how much gas is where you are but the fuel savings alone warrant the price. It's essentially a luxury vehicle it's not meant to compete with the entry level riff Raff
“Tell me you off-road in Colorado without telling me”… I know exactly which trail they went on for this review! 😂 Awesome truck! So great to actually see it out in the world and not just a prototype on Long Way Up!
Damn, thats an excellent expression of high-tech American engineering, capabilities and style. I'm very excited! Now to find $70k in between my couch cushions.... great job as always, Micah
Probably best not to mention that, while an American company, most of the engineers developing the R1T were actually British (poached from Jaguar Landrover).
The McLaren F1 had something similar back on '97... Though that of course was crazy expensive then and an absolute art piece nowadays. Glad Rivian brought it back for the masses.
@@davidnicholson6680 I mean, Avalanche's had that folding bulkhead that was really sick, but not seen since. If it worked, new or not, its good to see it make a return to the market

This is a really impressive vehicle. I’m from India and we don’t really get pick ups here, but if Rivian ever came here, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat! Looks cool and has tons of functionality.
Longest KBB video ever... Love that they did a long video for once; I always feel like the 3-6min videos they produce are good... But not at all beneficial to the future buyers of the cars they review. Keep making them long KBB

@@BranGrizz Exactly. 90% of trucks and SUVs don't see any off road action, and the ones that do spend most of their miles on the highway before getting to the trail. That's just how it is.
A bunch of new Rivian reviews are by the guys in the other trucks in this video on this same curated demonstration. That's Motor Trend in the blue one.
WOW, they actually built it and it looks great. Great review Micah. I do think it's odd that a media outlet invested $350M in Rivian and then invited that media outlet to review their truck while ignoring TFL emails & calls. I enjoy the work KBB does, but I really rely on the independent reviews from TFL. Hey Rivian, here's a suggestion... give TFL a close look at your new truck.
I would venture to say that the investment came from Cox Enterprise, the parent company. They do something like $21Bln in annual revenue. If you understood how business works, a company rewards its loyal business partners/investors with things others don't get till later, in this case access to the vehicle to review.
@@MichaelJanzen not a conflict if they’re the investor, plus I’m a car guy and have a fockin clue who the fuck TFL is, so probably not a big enough deal. Edit: Looked it up, The Fast Lane? This has some really compelling features that all truck makers better watch. That pass through between the backseat and the bed is so unique and innovative
I'm sure a lot of city dwellers will love it. Price, range and charge waits are the reasons these things will not be mainstream for a while. $60k+ is a quite pricey for a base mid sized truck. When you can get a normal base mid sized truck for half that and not worry about where can I charge it and how long will it take, these things will still be sitting on the lot.
I feel like this vehicle will do really well in Australia, South Africa and Europe. Mid size pickups are suited to our roads as opposed to the full size pick ups that are more popular in America.

How they can be so good is beyond my understanding lol, like all the fancy features are legit cool and proved to be thoughtfully useful, especially love that in-between cabin trunk storage, great idea. Not to mention that interior is impressively packaged, easily blown away anything from traditional American luxury brands, move aside Cadillac lol. Seems like Tesla will have sleepless nights after this. Bravo Rivian 👍🏼
This is a pretty impressive truck, however, in my opinion, too many options when you are spending $70,000. How do you not include a full spare tire for $70,000? There were a couple of others mentioned here that should have been included as well.

This is such a cool truck. Feature rich and practical, especially for an electric truck. The only thing that would come close is the Ford F-150 Lightning, because the Tesla Cybertruck isn't a truck, just some random sheet metal strapped together by a drunk person. I only dislike the fact that all the HVAC and audio controls are in a touchscreen, but otherwise very cool.
Yay! Was waiting this for a long time! EV has so many fundamental advantages for extreme off-roading. Like instant and linear torque, low center of gravity, flat bottom, silence in nature, no fuel or oil leveling, no air intake and therefore ability to cross deep rivers and same performance on any altitude, exhaust absence.
Couple things for me. It’s extremely heavy. Published gvwr of over 8500 lbs and payload of around 1700 lbs means this thing is nearly 7000 lbs. plus I don’t trust the suspension to be reliable long term. Then there is the range. No low range means the high speed gearing will make the motors work harder and generate more heat. How far will it go off road? I can literally double my range with fuel cans. . It’s a cool truck, but I don’t see it fulfilling my needs. The 20 mile 4xe wrangler with low range for its motor gets about 3 miles of off road range per TFLs tests. So what does a 300 mile R1T get? 45 miles under similar conditions?
@@KTMcaptain my exact questions…let’s see it reviewed by a true off-road test comparable with similar sized gas trucks in the wild-real rock-slider needed crawling, trail running, over landing 3day+ trips, etc! And how about a winch & recovery scenarios? Still many unanswered questions, but if can do all of the above well…it will be a very compelling option.
So you think you’ll be able to buy the Ford Lightning with all the options the R1T has for $40k? 🤣. $70-90k easy plus dealing with dealer markups from a traditional dealer. Good luck

I’ve heard of Rivian for a long time now and they look to have produced something really great but my only issue is, if you are trying to get into the truck market by putting your base model around 70,000 and that price is for almost a gmc denali fully loaded or even a ford raptor fully loaded, it’s hard to make a consumer choose this over any solid working truck that has been trusted for years for that amount of money. Take a look at the MotorTrend review or the video where they drive from the Atlantic to the Pacific on the Trans America Trail. They had to announce that they loved the truck so much that they knew they were going to get push back for sounding like "a shill for Rivian". It is a really great platform that has taken a very long time to fully develop and bring to market. Was this a sponsored commercial that I just watched? Did I miss where he talked about how much range they used while off-roading it? With an electric vehicle do you think talking about range would be one of the most important parts. Don't get me wrong it looks really nice.
I was with you until the very end when you said it was an "excellent pick-up truck". Going to have to push back on that. This is an excellent adventure* vehicle, which was their target. As a pick-up truck this thing is sorely lacking in bed space (only 4.5ft), the range while towing will only make this thing good for short trips as charging will take a lifetime under even ideal circumstances (being able to park with a trailer attached at a hopefully available fast charger). Additionally this truck also lacks a ton of truck specific features offered by more traditional truck manufacturers (trailer blind spot monitoring, weight scale in bed, physical trailer brake controls, etc.). All that said, this is still an excellent first go for a start-up. I really look forward to future iterations with more range, actual knobs and buttons for core functions, a better cup holder situation including door slots, a frunk that gets the front fascia out of the way for easy loading/more space, and the option to remove or replace the glass roof.
