I own the Sennheiser Momentum 4 in black, I agree it is the best value! I tried and owned the Bose QC 45, tried the sony XM5etc. The Momentum 4 has by far the best sound quality! No other headphone has the 60-hour battery life of the Momentum 4 and the Microphone is very good for phone calls, I wish the Momentum 4 had Bose's Noice cancelling! For those watching old reviews, please know that there is an update that fixes all issues mentioned within the early reviews of the Momentum 4.

@vokso11 Do those fixed issues also include the bug of the Momentum 4 headphones automatically switching on while in the case under some circumtstances, e.g. when the case is being stored vertically inside a backpack? I am also considering getting the Sennheiser Momentum 4, but automatically switching on headphones would be kind of a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, thank you John! Now you know, why the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless are my favourite pair of Bluetooth ANC headphones. I also prefer them over the Sonys. And I had a chance to try the B&W, and again my preference are the Sennheiser. Unfortunately I don't have a chance to try the Focal Bathys. I own the their Celestee, which I really love. A feature of the Sennheiser you didn't even mention (I know, time is limited), is their capability to connect them via USB-C and listen and charge simultaneously.

Hi, I hope you can provide me with an answer about this: can I also use the Sennheiser M4 with usb-c or usb-c to 3.5 attached to a DAC on my Samsung S20 or Samsung Note 10+ to listen to Hi-Res Flac audio through Tidal app, close to lossless quality? Since I think this cannot be done through Bluetooth alone. Thanks :)

I really feel that you carry the same unbiased nature of giving feedback in every video no matter how good/bad the product. The simplicity in video reproduction and presentation in its own way is truly amazing. It would be wrong on my part to leave out the efforts put in by the team behind the camera, so Kudos to you'll as well. Great work!

They were great when I first put them on, but they grow on me even more the more I listen to them. What a great value in Bluetooth headphones they represent in 2022! Great review, John!

These are the worst headphones to use daily. They sound great, but are so frustrating to try and get working every time you try to use them. I have had mine for a month, and I just don't get how anyone could screw up the product design of the UX for these so badly. The touch controls on the ear cup actuate any time you touch them, not just when they are on your ears. So if you bump them on your desk or even when you go to pick them up, that counts as a tap, which is the "Play" button, so RU-vid will start playing on your PC if you had a tab of it open, for example. Or it will change the volume or pass through randomly just in the process of putting them on your head. The app does have a toggle to disable touch, but the headphones do not retain the setting! So any time you plug them in to charge, the touch controls turn back on. They also disconnect from both the phone and the PC dongle every time they are charged via USB. The headphones retain no memory of the connections, so they need to be power cycled to connect again, sometimes several times, while everyone else on the call is waiting. They sound amazing, but are such a chore to fumble with to get them to work. You have to effectively fix them every time you go to use them. Having to use the app to configure them every time I want to use them makes the sound quality gains, just not worth it anymore. I am a pretty staunch Sennheiser fan, most of my headphones and headsets for the past 20 years have that logo on em, but these, are just a horrible experience.

Actually in the process of selling mine for exactly this reason. Never had better sounding BT headphones, and never had more frustrating to use BT headphones than the Momentum 4s. Can't even count how many times the Apple Music app started up and doing weird stuff because the headphones had misinterpreted how I picked them up or whatever. So, great headphones, but also complete trash headphones (to me). Now looking at anything that sounds good and has real physical buttons as replacement.

I own this M4 for a month and having a lot of issue, I’m surprised that none of the issue even mentioned! I work along side with the construction crews indoor with a noisy environment, it cut down the noise which is great. Yes, I installed latest Sept firmware 2.9.12 right after I purchased. I wear this head set at least 8 hours a day even though I work 10 hours. The unit worked good for a week with all touch function worked. I do say the fast forward function is a miss and hit! What I meant is, there are time it won’t skip forward. It sounds great but the bugs starting to pop out: It will turn itself off if you hook up two devices from time to time; it didn’t happen before. I love the feature when you pull the right head set out off your ear, it will stop playing any song, it worked last night and now today. Last night I couldn’t turn it on, a bit of google search and solved the issue by holding down the power for 20s to reboot. The pause and double tapping (noise cancellation) worked well. The touch function can be a nightmare, it is not base on your finger touching like the touch screen off an iPhone. My hoodie will touch it and it will either be pausing or doing other weird shit, it is very irritating! When you power it on or off, it never tell you it is on or off mode; it will tell you it is connected. Here you are trying to listen if you are connected even though it is not powered on! I like the sound but the bugs are really troublesome, if you can live with all this issue then it is for you. Yes the battery life is a bonus but I don’t buy this head set base on this. Sennheiser really need to update another new firmware, I got till early next year before returning it back; meanwhile I will have to live with it!

one thing I didn't see in your review is how do they approach the limited lifespan of these products? battery dies after 4-8 years - any way to replace them if the owner so chose? so parts availability and level of technical abilities to perform such an operation....I'm obviously not in the market until I can get a statement from any manufacturer that it's possible thing for the end user to do later in the product's life

Got these as my upgrade to my PXC 550-II. They are definitely sounding good, especially considering I really like Sennheiser sound signature, have their wired includinh HD600 and HD58x, true wireless as well, but PXC were much more neutral sounding which I really appreciated. These are more "jam" curved but still much better than the hyped XM4/XM5 and for me better than PX7/8, but not better than Focal Bathys but then they are much costlier and bulkier. Comfort is really good, no love lost compared to awesome PXC 550-II fit and weight. I ended up tweaking the EQ after all and settled with -2.0 points on bass, +1.5 treble, still undecided on mids, probably +0.5-1.0. Soundstage is much wider than PXC 550-II.

What any influencer FORGET to mention about this model is the FIRMWARE UNSTABILITY...which is very annoyng - smart pause and head detection is terible...wont detect when i remove my headsets, only if i put them on my neck....also not start/pause automatically - the headset also suddenly shutdown even if is streaming....randomly - sound is good but not as hood as expected and the app even if usefull, could break the sound if you dont know more about sound quality. I am a bit dissapointed but is still acceptable to keep them because of sound and battery.

Encouraged by this and many other reviews, I have bought M4s. What was my surprise that these headphones, out of the box, sounded ...terrible. With some EQ I could achieve more or less acceptable sound, but still very colorized. By using a sin generator I could easily discover, that the main problem was a significant peak at about 1 kHz followed by a dip at about 1.5 kHz (see some frequency response graphs, e.g. Rtings). This and other odds in upper frequencies, that cannot be effectively equalized with a 5-band EQ, make the sound in mids and treble uneven and shouty. The effect was the most annoying with classical and piano music. And it was not the only problem. The bass was not as well defined as I expected. Imaging and soundstage were also disappointing (I know, this a closed-back headphone, but...). This all caused me to send M4s back. The funny thing is, I still use my three times cheaper Soundcore Q30s, which sound much more equal (with its quite effective 1-octave 8-band equalizer) with very well-defined bass, good soundstage and imaging (surprisingly for cheap closed-back headphones). They are also lighter and more comfy for me than M4s. Since I'm using my headphones at home only, the sound quality and comfort are the most important for me. It seems it will be difficult to find much better headphones than my Q30s at a reasonable price.

I will admit that I am a Sennheiser headphone bigot going way back. I strayed from the brand for a few years but now I am back. I just picked these up today based on your review so thank you, thank you, thank you! I also gave the Sony's a try but for listening to music at home (ANC is optional for me) these are hand's down the better of the two. The app has its' quirks but nothing that breaks the deal. These are not made by Sennheiser, that's why these have issues. I have owned 3 pairs since release and the 3rd pair was the best out of the 3. (not by much) These are plagued with issues mostly caused by the ANC making these sound unbalanced with air an pressure issue on one cup. Sennheiser sold there headphone division so these are only Sennheiser by name and also explains the shift away from the old design

While in there I was able to listen to the Sony MK5 that seemed really bassey and i put the AirPods Max on my head which I found terribly uncomfortable and just a bad fit. The last few hours with the Sennheiser have been very enjoyable and I think they are EXCELLENT. Connecting to bluetooth from Macbook Pro to iPhone to apple watch to Mac studio has been really easy., I'm excited to try the Bathys and see if it's worth the $300+ premium. I'll LYK what I decide. The M4 is more fun to listen to and that was most important to me. PX maybe more for audiophiles and M4 for anyone who wants to have more listening pleasure. PX super premium build and M4 unfortunately plastic. Something for something :)

I almost feel like you're talking about the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 I just picked up. In terms of sound anyway. I had the Sony WF-1000XM4 before, but the Momentums just sound so much better. There is just so much information. Instruments like cymbals and drums sound so real. Almost too much to be honest, because I'm not always inclined to listen that way. But at the same time, I much rather have this than the other way around. And the bass is so good as well. Defined, without muddying up anything. Which is where the Sony's really struggled sometimes. The only real negative is that I can now hear when a recording isn't as good. So, that perhaps makes me enjoy some of my music a bit less. But at the same time, I enjoy other albums more.

And the M4 are nowhere near to Apple for ANC. They are good but not on the same level. But for sound quality and comfort they beat the Apples...not to mention price. Oh, forgot to mention battery life. My Airpods are dead within a few days of listening, the M4 are beasts in this department! However, thinking about grabbing a pair of Focal Bathys now. Ive noticed lots of companies dont have heavy emphasis on sound for their ratings. Sony is the king of ANC and thats prob what made em #1 in their eyes. They also are pretty comfortable and have a pretty good app for it too. But IMO if sound is key, and it should be, its nowhere near the top. Also IMO ANC doesn't matter as much as most think it does if you are listening to just about anything on any headphone or earbud.

Hi! I like that kind of videos understandable for dummies like me. I have a quastion concerning this. I use a Samsung S21 Ultra and a Sennheiser Momentum 4. Not ideal because the Samsung does support LDAC but not aptX adaptive like the Momentum 4 but ok for standard streaming and mp3-files. When listening to the part of my library that consists of music with 16Bit/44.1Khz or even higher rates I use a USB-C to USB-C-Cable between phone and headphone and even my ears hear an advantage switching between BT and Cable. What I am wondering is: Is there any gain in soundquality when I use a mobile DAC like the Fiio KA3 and a 3.5 to 2.5 (or 4.4 to 2.5) cable or is the USB-C-connection the best to use? Additionally: I use Poweramp for local files. Does it make sense to switch to something like USB-Audioplayer PRO when using the USB-C or the DAC-variant?

thanks for the review, and some comments below are helpful. I just got the Mo 4's, and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong with them. They sound sub par to me in a way I can't really explain. Muddy is one way, but also when I played some symphonic music, the cello's and strings sounded..... non smooth, a little distorted on the attack, just not good. I put on my wired, old headphones that were $150 10 years ago, and they had much better clarity and sound stage. So I know these have noise cancellation, and I think I turned that off, so just wondering if you all might think of something I've done wrong in settings. As I can't believe these have come fairly highly recommended and deliver such an unsatisfactory listening experience. They were def comfortable, but that was the most positive thing I can say. Sorry for the negativity, just looking for any feedback possible.

I have a lot of bluetooth anc headphones (xm4, xm5, Momentum 3, Momentum 4, Qc45, had the airpod max for two weeks but returned them becausse theyre hot garbage) and the Momentum 4 have the best Soundquality and they last the longest. The Anc is worse than Sonys but not that much. Comfort is different for everybody but If u have big ears u should consider buying different Headphones due to the earcups being a little small. I had some issues with the M4s at the beginning but the constant Firmware Updates fixed almost all of them and the Issues that havent been fixed yet are extremely rare.

Merry Christmas John! Interesting, no comments “specifically” about the treble/high frequency performance of the Sennheisers? That was my first thought so I listen to your review a second time and took notes. The bass performance was described in several different ways. Layer separation, general & relative quality, Headstage/soundstage; Internal spaciousness, openness, Dynamics & micro-dynamics, that Small sounds have greater Avidity & clarity, and overall sound comparison. Yes… nothing about the high frequencies? How would you describe & compare them? I think it’s hugely important to me, because the Senn4 sound like a winner, and a bargain. Thank you!
@VeitLehmann
@VeitLehmann Год назад
To my ears, the treble is just right, there's really nothing that stands out in any negative way. Sure, they're not as airy as open-back wired headphones can be, but it surely has a lot more air than a Sony XM5 and it's much cleaner and more even there than any Bose. I can only directly compare it against the PXC 550, which is far more uneven there. From my memory, it's similar to the PX7 S2's treble. But it's not on the level of my DT 880 600 Ohms for sure. In short: Don't worry about the treble. However, I can hear some nasal resonance in the mids around 1kHz and sometimes have to dial back the mids to get rid of it. That's something almost nobody seems to observe and mention. Maybe it's just there for some people. But I can deal with it because all the other positive things Darko describes are also there and make those headphones something very special to listen to.

Nice review! I bought a M4 in the middle of Oct last year based on its massive battery capacity and sound profile, and it was comfortable when I tested it at a shop. I charged it to full and took a round trip between the east coast of the US and the Eastern Asia (30hrs), a round trip between the east coast and west coast (12lb s) and used it in the office lightly. Its battery level was 10% this morning so I finally recharged it. Impressive indeed. It does, however, create a hot spot at the top of my head (head shape dependent) and its touch control is too sensitive. I was using a neck pillow during my transatlantic flights and when I rolled my head, that activated the touch control. Lol

Listened to the Momentum 4 and the Focal Bathys, and I'd be kidding myself if I said that the Bathys sounded better. With the ONLY exception of the M4's boosted sub-bass, which can be EQ'd on the app, the M4 sounded more natural from the upper bass up to the treble. The Bathys sounds good, for sure, but one should really enjoy laidback, blunted, relatively dull presence region to be able to call them "better" sounding.

This headphones are my daily drivers for many reasons that I will list: Decent ANC Decent Ambient (not great but acceptable) The touch controls aren't frustrating Comfortable enough for my head Sound is not fatiguing to my ears I do have some complaints, even if I listed that the sound is not fatiguing I don't exactly love it, but compared to the Sony's, I can listen to them for hours, only Sony gives me ringing in my ears after listening them for 5 minutes, so, if you want to get them you will not be dissapointed, in the end is not about sound quality alone, is about comfort and convenience.

I had to return my pair, they weren’t quite loud enough for certain songs / albums. Never had that issue before with any headphones. Apparently this is a common complaint with these headphones - having to put them to max volume to get to a decent level. What a shame.

I had these and I returned them. They do sound good but the build quality really isn't great. They do feel very plasticy and you can hear that in the sound too. Hard to avoid at that prince point though. The reason I returned them was discomfort though. I couldn't keep them on for longer than an hour without my ears really aching. I guess they didn't fit quite right into the cups, and I don't have large ears either. Otherwise though they were pretty good. Oh, the app is terrible, I should say. Crashed on my constantly, very limited. Can't turn ANC off entirely, EQ is very limited. Just a perfect mix of instability and missing functionality.

If you are a Berliner and you spot Darko walking through your neighbourhood, should you approach? Best thing to do is to check his ears. If he is wearing wireless earbuds we might infer he is pressed for time and should not be disturbed. However, I f the earphones are wired, then one might infer this was a planned excursion and he may have more time to stop and talk. But what if his ears are empty? In that case, you are on your own.

And I thought I had a lot of Bluetooth headphones. Though I return, or sell on, the ones I don’t use. I’m currently on the Sony XM3. Recently purchased XM4, as I prefer the way they fold away to the XM5, but although the sound quality was definitely improved… I actually prefer listening to my favourite rock and metal tunes on the XM3… they feel more… “fun”, I guess. Also, when using them for webex and Teams calls I found the sound was more ‘digital’(?) on the XM4 than the 3. Odd. A definite unimprovement. Used to have Momentum 2, which sounded terrific, if a little too clean for their own good, but the pressure point on top of your head did for me. I have an hour commute and also use them for an average of 3 hours of video calls a day. Too uncomfortable, but these new ones are enticing. I think I’ll have to see if my local Hif I store will give me a sound test for a short while. Just when I thought I’d saved my wallet, and the silent stares from the wife, from more headphones…. Eeeek. Great review John. Thank you.

Bought these and the Sony XM5 at the same time. The Sennheiser sounded better more open indeed and subbass was too massive almost. However, i noticed a clear skewed stereo imagine, it drove me insane;) how do i know and that my brain was not playing tricks? I played one of my own tracks and went to my DAW and isolated the sound around 9-11khz on the hihat. It was clearly more to one side. Then i adjusted the panning by 12 points away from this side and it was nicely in the middel. So, skewed stereo image and a total no go. The sony’s are way more comfy for me, but realize that is subjective. I can eq the sony enough to make it sound great. And indeed, ANC is quite better with the sony’s. In the end for me it was more important to have comfy great sounding headphones with the best anc. If i want true hifi, i have my hifi Set up, my studio and tons of headphones. True hifi on an iphone (AAc) is BS anyway:)

I use Crutchfield for my headphone purchases, because their customer service is outstanding. Six weeks ago, I purchased the Sony WH-1000XM4 headset and had numerous problems with it disconnecting in Zoom calls, as well as it phasing out for 1 second on Spotify after using them for 8-12 minutes. My original purchase was open box. Reporting this to Crutchfield, they shipped out a brand new pair which I received in 2 days, then put the faulty Sonys back in the same shipping box, taped on the return UPS label and sent it off. No additional charge by Crutchfield. Sadly, I had the same issues with the replacement Sonys. I called Sony and went through 2 levels of support and they offered free replacement as well, but would not ship out the replacements until they had received the pair I bought from Crutchfield. I called Crutchfield and they recommended that I could change to the Momentum 4, and since they had just gone on sale, would also receive a $30 refund in difference of cost. I already own Momentum 2s and have been sappy with them, but needed to get more bells and whistles, plus a more comfortable headband (Momentum 2 has a hard leather band with is very uncomfortable). The new Momentum 4s are due for delivery sometime today and I watched this video with great pleasure seeing that his recommendation and descriptions are far exceeding what I had hoped for.

I have them on a black plastic stand with my NAIM boxes. It doesn't scream HEY LOOK AT ME I'VE GOT EXPENSIVE HEADPHONES if I'm wearing them out and about.
