Aldebaran BFS, the leader in bait finesse, has undergone a dramatic evolution with a newly designed magnetic brake. The newly adopted FTB enables a wide range of brake settings by taking a long movable stroke of the brake unit, and the arrangement of the magnetic ring has been reviewed to eliminate the influence of the magnet in the weakest brake setting 1 as much as possible. Succeeded in getting closer. The synergistic effect of the new FTB that suppresses excessive braking and the low inertia Magnum Light Spool III realizes the growth in the latter half that does not stall until just before landing while maintaining the low trajectory that is Aldebaran's weapon. Even a 1g class ultra-lightweight lure can be sent to the depths of the structure with a trajectory that crawls on the surface of the water. Favourite . Ive only got 3 different models of BFS reels , although i have a few other reels that will cast down to 3 grams but are not considered BFS reels . Id say its my Daiwa Alphas Air Tw (I own 2 of them ) . I got an Abu Garcia Revo Ltx BF8 (Had it for 10 months but not used it yet ) .

@@HobieWanKenobi Perfect! I have them both as well. Did you find dialing in the tension on the 22 a little tricky? Guessing because of the o-rings.

Although I meanwhile became a DAIWA fanboy (don‘t know exactly why, I assume it‘s because of design, color, form factor, ease of use…..just something minor), I would honestly consider this reel because of your presentation if I was in the market right now. Thank you Arne!!! I used to be Daiwa only and the 16 Aldebaran BFS changed that. The FTB braking system Shimano uses on BFS reels is great.

Good content for the new Aldebaran, glad to see someone cover it in depth so quickly after availability. I have always been a Daiwa fan so I'd probably just get an Alphas variant, but I am still interested in hearing about the new Aldebaran. I wonder if Shimano will release a general purpose finesse version of this reel and if they do I really hope they reconsider that awful protruding brake dial. That is really the only gripe I can see or have seen for the new Aldebaran BFS. Also look forward to seeing how the micro module aluminum gears hold up.

The brake dial is not as bad as people thought. I would like to see Shimano offer a slightly deeper spool with this braking profile.

I’m just trying to picture my old lady outside in the winter filming me talking about a fishing reel. Not going to happen. I keep tottering on whether to not I “need” to pick up this reel. I have multiple bfs reels that rarely get used including my 16 aldebaran. I should probably just sell my curado and 1 of my air tws. I’m a shimano guy through and through but really was impressed with the new daiwa bfs reels that I picked up. I’m looking forward to the upcoming video that you referred to to continue to help me with my decision. Thanks as always for the thorough content.

Hey Hobie, Man I love the videos you're sharing with us and the information accuracy. Coild you please give me an advice about 2 of the reels you own? It's about the Gekkabijin and the 22 Aldebaran. In terms of the overall feel and casting light lures, what reel would you go for? I am really having troubles deciding between those 2. I will mostly use the reel for both streams and open water with lures between 0.5 to maybe 7 grams max. Again, thank you for the uploads !

I would go with the Aldebaran. Gekkabijin is kinda restrictive casting for short range. If you get a Roro AX22 spool for the Gekkabijin, that's your best best. Long range stock spool paired with a short range spool you can have a different line on.

The ice is melting so, the ice shelves that cover the rivers are melting!!! The long winter is draining and has limited opportunity for that type of fishing. Luckily I like ice fishing.

LOL The Micro Tappy. I got Bait Finesse Empire's last one. It's the dumbest looking lure ever, but I couldn't resist it. I'll be trying it out soon, but I bought it just because it looks so wild.

People are calling it an ugly reel, but besides the brake adjustment dial I think it's a really good looking piece. If they matched the center of that dial to the side plate cover it would probably help the looks a lot. But function over form at the end of the day.

I was looking for a reel to replace my aatw since distance seems to drop off quite a bit with heavier lures. For long distance overhead casts with rigs in the 7-9 gram range (like a 4inch senko), how does it compare with the 16 aldebaran?

I think the 2016 Aldebaran BFS gets slightly more distance with bass lures than the Alphas AIR TW.

Great video Hobie-Wan Kenobi . We know all these big brand BFS reels can cast down to 2 grams quite easily . Im gonna come from a different angle . Something we forget sometimes getting caught up in the newest and latest . Fun factor !!! Which BFS reel gives you the most fun on the bank ? Which BFS reel do you enjoy the most . Dont expect an answer now . Will ask again when you have more time with them on the water .

The spools/bearings have rubber O-rings on them that reduce spool vibration

Hey mate very great upload 👍 which size of braid would you prefer for fishing with 3 to 15 gramm lures? To casting long distance but don't get a backlash? My reel cast 1 to 12 gramms and my rod 3 to 15 and the fish that iam try to catch is between 100 gramms up to maybe 3 kilos

This 0.6goh (around 10lb) braid with a leader of your choice is great all around. Casts well and isn't too thin and wispy.

Nice review. Magnesium makes me nervous for saltwater, so waiting for the next new thing. Maybe for stream hiking to go with the fly gear. How does this rate vs a zillion 21 with a Roro spool.

I like the Aldebaran BFS more than the Zillion SV TW with Roro spool (similar to your setup). Nothing against the Zillion/Roro. A reel just needs to fit your needs. People often overbuy with tackle...I am guilty 😂

@@HobieWanKenobi lol the struggle is reel ;) Zillion set up for bfs, Curado and Gek. I think I prefer the larger diameter spools and a bit more line capacity than some. But light inshore salt is my main game, thanks for all the great content and answering questions.

The new Aldebaran BFS cast distance pretty easy. I find myself casting further with less effort using the Aldebaran BFS than the Alphas AIR TW. Not a huge difference but, noticable.

How does the performance stack up against the conquest BFS. Imo that reel is king when it comes to build quality and aesthetic. Hopefully shimano will take the new technology in the alde 22 and make a new conquest bfs

I like the performance of the Aldebaran BFS more. It is updated with new features of course. I would buy the Aldebaran over the Conquest today. When the new Conquest comes out...opinion could change

I've seen some articles that indicate that if you get a snag with braid to leader, and try to pull it out, it can damage the spool. Any thoughts on this ? Would this be the same with the Curado BFS? Thanks in advance. @@HobieWanKenobi

Yes. I use it like that for walleye. 1/4oz total weight, not just the weight of the jighead.

I have the same exact setup! Even with the same varivas 10lb line. I’ve been having issues with backlash about mid cast and even had it break in the spool as well. The line may be digging into itself. Does it matter how much line you spool?

Line digging in most likely. If you cast really soft and the cast stop but, no backlash, that's definitely the issue.

I really like the new Aldebaran BFS. Casts very nice (oddly quiet too) and it's smooth. The price is great from Japan right now too (good exchange rate).

The Aldebaran BFS will cast lighter lures. I have not used the SLX DC 70 but, it is meant for a little larger lures than the Aldebaran BFS or SLX BFS.

I have been running 4lb fluorocarbon on mine. I had 10lb braided line on this reel as well. Both lines work fine.

The Aldebaran can be used in saltwater. Just have to rise it or however you care for saltwater reels.

I have to pick up some cork sealant. I haven't got water under the plastic yet. I don't care too much what tackle looks like.

@@HobieWanKenobi I bought a bottle of sealant a while back. I did every one of my rods and still have 95% of the 1oz. bottle left. This stuff will dry out in the bottle before I'll ever use it up. Tip: before sealing old cork scrub it with a Magic Eraser you can buy in the hardware store. Makes the cork look brand new.

@@gmpbuilder if it’s dried out just drop some water in and stir well. As the U40 cork sealer, which I think you are referring to, is a water based solvent you can easily refill and recreate the original fluidity. I did it and made good experiences. This tiny bottle will last forever.
