2022 Specialized Tarmac SL6 review: Flagship performance, distilled

The Tarmac has always been Specialized’s premier all-around bike for road racing, and in some sense, if you’ve ridden one, you’ve ridden them all - and that’s an excellent thing. In this case, the Tarmac SL6 Sport from Specialized may use a modified and more budget-friendly version of the old flagship S-Works Tarmac SL6, but it still feels an awful lot like its vastly more expensive and newer siblings, and for a fraction of the cost.
The ride quality is very similar to current halo models, the handling is the same, and it still looks like a bike that could’ve been introduced today instead of one that’s one generation old. Unless you absolutely have to have the latest-and-greatest in terms of weight and aerodynamics, this bike ticks all the boxes that most riders care about.
The FACT 9r carbon fiber frame that Specialized uses here is nearly identical to the previous-generation S-Works Tarmac (we’re now in the seventh generation of the Tarmac SL, in case you’re wondering). You get the same semi-aero tube shaping throughout most of the frame, the same dropped seatstays, the same convertible internal routing port on top of the down tube. But Specialized uses a cheaper carbon fiber blend on the SL6 Sport than what was originally found on the S-Works Tarmac SL6, and the more aerodynamic D-shaped carbon fiber seatpost has been replaced with a conventional 27.2 mm-diameter round one.
And thankfully, the OSBB press-fit bottom bracket shell that Specialized once favored has given way to a conventional English-threaded one.
Our Field Test group bike tests are by no means paid events, but they’re still only possible with some outside support.

@@joshuatam8975 I have a 52 and it was about 17.5 lbs before I replaced the wheels with a set of 50mm carbon wheels from Farsport that saved about half a pound, if I recall. Totally transformed the bike, all of the flex is gone.. The reviewer is right, it's a rocket now. The original wheels are reserved for the rollers.

I bought this bike because of this review back in 2021 when every single Tarmac in my State is gone sold. I found the last one my size drove 60 miles to get it. Now upgraded it to weigh as much as an Ethos. I love it and would not trade the 105 mechanical for an SL8. Thank You!

Round seat post and lack of front end integration is a positive! Threaded bb is also great. Best tarmac option. Just get some deeper wider wheels

Fact check: 1:05 DT Swiss R470 rim is aluminum not carbon. Whoopsie. 8:35: Specialized's bike spec lists rims at 20mm internal width. That's not super narrow for a road-dedicated machine. The external rim with might be relatively narrow, but these aren't aero wheels so does this matter?
@MrKipperfish
@MrKipperfish 8 месяцев назад
The Roval 32's they suggest? 21mm internal. The cycling media is so brainwashed by the idea that you need to be running rims wide enough for xcmtb tires on your road bike. Lead astray by the brand media reps and an inattention to reality. Just put a 28 on the rear and stop worrying about the inconsequential differences between 19/20/21 internal rims! Time and again the people doing the real science find zero benefit or downsides from going super wide on road rims with 25-28mm tires. Roval 32s would almost certainly improve the bike, but that's the stiffness of carbon and a sub 1500g wheelset doing the heavy lifting, not an internal width difference.
@richcole3931
@richcole3931 8 месяцев назад
@@MrKipperfish 19 vs 21mm internal was a noticable difference for the 28mm GP5K tires. Much less of a lightbulb profile with 21mm than the 19mm. Now I run 30mm, as do an increasing number of pro teams. Not because they're faster or slower--as you say no discernible differences in those categories. But ride comfort and cornering are major improvements with 30mm. The 21mm internal is perfect for that.

I have the 2021 version of this and love it. I was a bit worried that it might be too aggressive (I’m in my fifties and my old bones prefer comfort over speed) but it’s super comfortable, even on 26mm tyres. Yes, it’s expensive for 105 and the wheels need upgrading, but it’s so well put together and balanced, I’m not complaining. It’s a good looker too, in carbon black. Nice one Specialized.

Just brought the same bike last year Oct 2021 for my daughter's 24th birthday..she loves it..I ride the cervelo caledonia ultegra and she keeps up with me with no problem..im jealous that she has a carbon S-works seat post..lol.. the black/gray carbon looks amazing on the SL6 in person..the video doesn't do any justice..Soon we'll swap out her wheels for some carbon ones..

A neighbor is selling this for $2800 USD. I been waiting for my Aethos I ordered since last year September... I don't intend the bikes just for racing, as I'm mostly a endurance ultra cyclist. My question is should I wait longer for the Aethos or just get the Tarmac. Had the SL2 Tarmac since 2010 and loved it as my all arounder. My question is: Should I just get the SL6??? Thanks!

Cmon guys, I know you are looking mostly at really nice and expensive bikes, but a Tarmac SL6 for 3500 USD/CHF/EUR (plusminus) is not an entry-level bike 4:33....At least say something along the lines of "entry-level for Specialized Tarmac". There's a little bit more explanation around 5:15, but still. We shouldn't let the manufacturers shift the goal posts as easily.

Again the BS about press-fit BB. Press-fit is superior to threaded. Removing a press-fit BB cost maybe a bit more time, but you don't do that every year. As a home mechanic I love press-fit. One tool set to press every type or "standard" press-fit BB in a frame. A creaking bottom bracket is caused by low quality frames. If a manufacturer goes back to threaded than you know the frame is not produced with a decent accuracy.
@amitkumar-wj8gn

Amazing that these guys blame the technology instead of the frame manufacturers even after all these years. Threaded is good for steel and even aluminium frames but press fit is better for carbon.
