For everyone saying the car "understeers a ton" it really doesn't on the street. You can still easily induce oversteer by either throttle oversteering as Yuri did, or by trail braking. It's very easily to set the twins up nearly identically by changing spring rates, sway bar settings, and adding camber. On the track, the BRZ definitely does have terminal understeer through tight corners. That being said it still is a TON of fun and will make you a much better driver. 10/10 would recommend.

both cars are beast on the track out the box. They just need better pads, DOt 4 fluid, and camber bolts up front. and I am adding an oil cooler for those HOT summer CA track days.

I'll see how the car is at the track this summer. im actually installing my color fittings oil cooler tomorrow.

I love the fact that this car exists. Reminds me more of the 240z days more than the modern z's. Just a simple sports coupe that's affordable and mod'able. Too bad about the fake " vroom vroom" sounds and those cup holders. That blue is 🔥🔥🔥

Congrats! Same here, came in yesterday. Personally, I don't want a car that's prone to "goonery", I want a car that sticks like it's supposed to and helps me to drive faster and easier. BRZ is that car, so that's what I bought. Enjoy yours to the max!

I got the new BRZ over the 86. Since I didn't drive either before I ordered it, the biggest difference was that my Subaru dealer has an amazing service department, and I don't know anything about the local Toyota dealers.

Bought the BRZ. Because of the stiffer rear swaybar mounting points, stiffer bushings, lighter aluminum knuckles and the more linear throttle map. Modifying so a bit of a better canvas than the GR86.

Honestly the handling differences will boil down to nothing as soon as you get an alignment. All this "more playfulness" of one model Vs the other will be 99% because of alignment.

@@R03333 respectfully disagree. There's definitely the better parts and higher rear lateral stiffness in the BRZ. That's why i bought it. The better parts without the carry over rear mounting points, softer bushings and more rear end movement. Why I went to Bilstein B8/Swift Spec R staggered spring set up. - 1 camber all around with a bit of rear toe out to get the rear end around a little easier. Rear lcas. Softer rates up front. Stiffer in the rear. Now even more tail happy and I still get to keep my aluminum knuckles for less unsprung weight, stiffer bushings, stiffer rear mounting points and linear throttle map. Can even change the bumpers if I want. Win/win

I think the BRZ has it in spades over the 86, I know a lot of people prefer the front end on the 86, but to me, the smiley front end of the BRZ screams happiness! I think the BRZ in white would look awesome...

@@tomkat492 it's true I don't say that the car by no means are undesirable the only problem is that for 40k it's marking almost territory of STI I can buy a used STI at 46k .... That's my problem. But the STI are getting mark up to the lowest I found one used is 46k they are selling up to 56k....

I would definitely enjoy the goon more on the GR86 as gripping to the raps would also be nice in the BRZ, I just don’t see me getting as much track use to utilize the grip, so for more street and daily commute GR86 for the win with some more fun to kick out the back if I get bored. Thanks for pointing out those differences!

As a owner I love my sport tech brz. The factory short shifter is great in my opinion. But one thing that I see people always miss is the “hidden” drift mode. When you hold down the traction button for long enough you will see the dash change into what looks like track mode but unlike track mode it turns traction completely off.

Great job of delineating the differences between these two enthusiast gems. Toyota went for more tail happy fun, Subaru went for more buttoned down precision. Both approaches are legit. The GR86 nailed the exterior design. The BRZ nailed...the price point. Thank you Mr. Toyoda.

I walked away from my GR86 allocation for the BRZ. Thought I wanted a white car but once I saw the world rally blue, that was it. The red highlights make a difference to me as well.

I bought the BRZ last December. The local Toyota dealer had zero information but Subaru did. I didn’t buy for colors, grill, etc. I wanted the driving experience and the BRZ has delivered that. After three autocross events I’m 100% happy with my choice. Add the OEM camber bolts for $30 and the understeer becomes a mute point.

I placed an allocation request for gr86. Found a couple of dealers that didn't have markup and projected 2-3 month wait. I didn't drive either of the cars but I like the front end of the 86 better and I heard brz tends to understeer. I have a small concern for maintenance by Toyota since it's basically a Subaru and some mechanics might not have even seen one, but I think I'll do most small repairs myself

They have a computer that runs a checklist basically for any repair, shouldn't be too worried about it. My friend showed me how in depth the scanner tool they use is for Ford, I'm sure Toyota/Subaru offer the same thing. I was really impressed by it... it's step by step until the job is done. Wish we could buy that for our cars

Considering the transmission, rear diff and most of the interior is Toyota and the car in most respects has been out since 2013 I think it'll be alright.

I just went to IKEA in my 22 BRZ and picked up an entertainment center. Surprisingly it fit with the back seats folded down and the front seat moved forward. This car is not practical but it will surprise you occasionally.

one big noticeable difference from the last generation: the turn signal switch now bounces back rather than stays in the left/right position. yes, it is now fully electrical.

I drove both in Gran Turismo 7 and they feel different. In the game, the BRZ is my choice. However, I heard that Toyota has done something to make the car rev happier and in real life where I will not be racing other people, the improved things in the engine will tip the balance. On the other hand, with the price difference, I can cancel the induction sounds in the cabin and install the exhaust with the unequal headers and remember why I bought my 2018 STI, the rewarding driving experience. With unequal headers sound, Subaru might be the right choice, since it was a signature sound on the street with the EJ engines that sound so cool making people decide to buy them just to be able to enjoy that experience. I would love to drive them a couple of days before deciding. I definitely want one of the two.

There was a BRZ with a manual inbound to my local Subaru dealership. The GR86 was only available in auto, or I could wait four months. I went with the BRZ.

I got the new BRZ for 5 months now and im loving it, Pearl white with the limited trim with STI parts on the way. Its definitely a precision machine through the canyons but its still fairly easy to throw out the back with the throttle on any turn, the quality is absolutely better than the last gen, awesome tech, gorgeous looks, No comparison for me the GR86 has a subaru engine, soooo..... its Subaru all the way!

@@dr.magnanimous8973 His GR86 had the 18" wheels and stickier Michelin Pilot 4 tires. His BRZ had the smaller 17" wheels and gripless Primacy tires. There was nothing to be learned from that video, in terms of lap times. Swap the wheels and tires, and the results would have been exactly (or nearly) the opposite.

Subaru has relatively less roll stiffness in the rear, GR86 has more. It's little like the difference between the AP2 and AP1 versions of the S2000. Honda did the same trick to calm down the oversteer.

An extra $2000 is going to be (most of) a year of insurance in most places in Canada. And if you are long to track the car, it makes the most sense to get the one with the handling geared towards that.

I always like pointing out, this car is absolutely underrated from the factory and is likely around 250hp. I compiled a list of nearly 30 dyno runs from posts on forums and facebook groups. Stock the average so far is 215whp and 175lb-ft. So there is no way the reported figures are correct. This is also backed up by its 0-60 and 1/4 times. And it just makes sense. The FA20 made over 100hp/liter, so why wouldn't the FA24 a decade later? I thin the main driving force behind the false numbers is stepping on the 2.0t Supra's toes, which makes 255hp.

I’d go with the BRZ because it looks a bit more exotic rather than boy racer. I’ve seen both in person and I prefer the BRZ. Also I’d rather have a Subaru badge on my steering wheel rather than a Toyota badge.

3 pot engine is weak af tho. It's already running like 25 psi boost from factory. Don't get me wrong, it's a good engine, but not for modding if you're into modding or getting higher ceiling out of engines etc. The best for BRZ would be an EJ engine btw. That is why the GT300 BRZ runs an EJ. EJ platform, like it or not, has insane development behind it. The FA engine doesn't, and never will with EV around the corner.

I test drove one of these speced out with the sti bits (lips, skirts, short shifter and cross bars) and I loved it, like a lot, except the clutch, which was way too light

The brz should be faster at drag racing and better around certain corners because it has stiffer front and softer rear suspension in comparison to the gr86. In testing the average 0-60 was a tenth quicker in the brz. This means in some corners however it may also understeer where the 86 won’t.

I have ordered the same car here in Australia. Top spec, manual in WR blue. Delivery by Xmas, I hope. I prefer the BRZ look over the 86. I hate black rims, way too common these days, yawn. I prefer how the BRZ nose rolls over a touch before the grill as opposed to the sharper top edge above the larger and more dated grill of the 86. I think the honeycomb affect though, would look good on the BRZ size grill. Disclaimer- I have just turned sixty, so this may be why I prefer the more "grown up" version of the twins. Mmmmm.........twins.🙂 Anyway, that is my opinion. Cheers.

@@J_S209 I love mine. Good looking little car, that handles a treat and goes good enough all things considered, like the law. Not as easy as my Hilux to get in and out of but we can all do with a bit of bending and stretching. Best of luck mate.

Boxer engine often has an oil leak. It costs $2000 to fix it in Japan. Some people paid $4500 for engine trouble. Subaru doesn't sell much in Japan because it takes time and money a lot after all.

Are you guys aware...at least for Gen one, there was an option for a short throw shifter, either from the factory or installed in port. But just where are the Brembos and Sachs this gen ?

Subaru did a great job with this new model ..after driving the car I came away with three things that are deal breakers for me. First the car is noisy lots of road noise comes inti the cabin . Second the piped in motor sound gets tiring real fast. And lastly I like to drive long distance and being 6’2” my elbow lands right in the middle of the door handle and it’s very uncomfortable after ten minutes. ( my 2014 BRZ didn’t have this issue)

Totally agree with the road noise. When the debris hits the fender, it feels like that car only has a layer of thin metal 😂 extremely loud! But still a great great car though!

It has about the same road noise as my M2C at least thats what I took away on my test drive. Didn't get one either but just food for thought.

I believe the GR86 is faster (time lap wise) on track although the BRZ tend to be more stable in its steering; Based on couple of yt videos I found. Sometimes I wish to have a second car as either BRZ or GR86 definitely be it

I just drove a 2019 30AE Miata back to back with my BRZ. The power is very similar. They both pull from down low. The Miata had better seats .

As a first time viewer of your video's - this (as well as the Toyota GR vs Miata) was a very entertaining video to watch. But as someone that actually thinks that the BRZ looks slightly better, mainly due to liking the front end more. So as a straight out "comparison" video - then I was (just slightly) disappointed that arguably one most important factors for choosing with version to pick, was totally left out of the video. And that was each cars Servicing costs. (thought I guess I would just assume that by reputation. the Toyota would be MUCH cheaper to service, than ANY? Subaru).

They're the same drivetrains so servicing will cost basically the same. Also dependant on your local Toyota and Subaru dealers hourly rates. Or just take both to your local independent Subaru boxer specialist and the rate will be the same for both
