Is 200 horsepower really enough any more? I remember when 100 was considered too much, five years later bikes were making 150 and some were complaining that it wasn't enough, now 200 isn't enough, 10 years from now you'll need 300 + to be a real man! 😂 Oh and none of your sissy rider aids. 😆

Love your videos. Personally i think most bikes are too much for the street. After 30 years of only riding on the street, i recently i gave up the street to focus on the track. No looking back. The once mighty and all-conquering liter sports bike class is a dying breed and you can almost trace the start of their demise back to the late 00's when their power output went north of 180bhp. Far too much power and way to focused and compromised for todays roads. Destined to go the way of the sports 600 class, out doing itself into extinction, helped along its way by over crowded and poorly maintained roads and the establishment frowning upon anyone having fun. A product of your own success...

Agreed Mark. What’s the point of owning a bike that you can’t legally or safely use anywhere near its potential? I just think the speed freaks ride because it has that power, although they’ll never use it. Me I have a old 2008 600 CBR and power wise it’s plenty for me, it has plenty of poke for the motorway and A roads and has the power too get me out of trouble should I need it. All these trip computers, anti wheelie mode, mode settings for this that etc it’s just style over substance. Plus my bike although old is paid for, unlike others flying around on expensive bikes they have on finance and don’t even technically own.

I owe a gixxer thou for two years now, and it isn’t for the road but you can make it absolutely docile on the road. Traction control level 7 or 8 in the rain mode is perfect for the road, and it’s my daily commuter to work in those settings. It won’t pull you back if you give it beans at that setting, in bumper to bumper traffic in Florida weather here it doesn’t get hot, and its as comfortable as the s1000rr in the sport bike category. Always reliable, built like a tank, and with a yoshimura slip on, it can easily satisfy your occasional speed demons. God tier sport bike.

Your very right Dan. In these modern days with police speed traps so sophisticated your licence is at risk or even worse. Don't get me wrong tho ! I love sports bike's. In the late 90's to 2008 I would finish my work shift at 2:30am on a Saturday morning and go and thrash (try to) my Blade or R1 around North Wales until dawn and then go home. Up at 4am on Sunday morning and do it all over again. Evo Triangle and more ! Bought a 2016 Gixer tho in 2020 and sold it 4 months later after starting to use its power and hitting crazy speeds again. Almost having as much fun on my current Hornet 600 until I find a nice relaxed 1000cc bike that makes you ride a bit slower !

As an owner of a 2015 S1000RR with the all of the options added, I can reveal that I miss my L4 GSXR 1000. The BMW is too much, feels like a turbo the way the power comes on, where as the GSXR allowed you to gradually get into licence-losing territory with the high rev limit. What the GSXR lacked in goodies, it made up for in soul. I am now looking to sell the BMW and pick up a similar GSXR, no traction control, no ABS, exactly how it should be. My two cents worth.

Nice review Dan, love the induction roar of the GSXR, and let's be honest modern 1000cc bikes are all about making a decent base for race prepping, they are not really aimed at the road rider any more, and tbh, any bike over 600cc will get you into trouble pretty damn quick in the wrong hands or situation, and the throttle does go both ways, so you don't always have to be 'on it' to enjoy a 1000cc, the mid-range grunt you get from a 1000cc, for a spot of overtaking, when you want, is nice, but in the UK where the roads are full of potholes and muppets who can't drive and don't see bikes, even when we have lights on, so perhaps thats why adventure bikes have taken over from Sports bikes, probably just as much fun, without having to ride like a TT racer. I've ridden Sports bikes pretty much ever since 1998, after a bit of a gap, and owned all sorts including R6's, 750's, SP1's FireBlades, and 2 GSXR thou's both K5 models and I would buy another K5/K6 tomorrow, in preference to a new 1000cc sports bike, IMHO the K5/K6 was the pinnacle of the GSXR1000 line, quick enough for the road, even with "only" 165bhp 😉 comfortable for a long ride 200-300 miles + in a day, easily, I had mine set-up professionally which made a massive difference to how the bike felt down the twisties, decent set of Pirelli's it was easily as quick even in my hands (and I'm not Peter Hickman, by any means) as newer i:e more powerful bikes down the back roads and the mid-range grunt was just incredible for a spot of overtaking. And like you say the 🔔-ends at bike meets that say a 200bhp Super bike isn't powerful enough are talking out of their backside and tbh, I could pretty much guarantee if you met one down a twisty road you could best him on my old K5 thou, with "only" 165bhp 😂

You're missing the point. The fun part of these bikes, where they make peak power and torque, is way beyond legal speeds. It's far more fun to ride a slower bike faster, than pootle around like your nan on a 100000000000cc squid machine.

I own a 2016 750 (yes the one with the ugly headlight) and one of the things i love the most is how clean the whole body looks without having those indicators sticking out the fairings and specially that king cobra looking tail how it widens out due to the indicators being integrated.

However, an interesting point of comparison would be Suzuki’s own DR-Z400SM. That’s a bike that can’t really be called slow, it’s certainly a noticeable step up from the 250/300 class, but you can actually use all the power and all the gears on the street and have a ton of fun on ordinary roads without being on the razor’s edge of doom the whole time.

I bought it because of the strong low 💪 to midrange pull gixxers have. I took a 100 lb friend, ( 45 kg ) for a spirited ride on the Garden State Parkway cruising between 90 and 120 mph in 6th gear and it pulled strong, never had to downshift and I didn't really notice any drag from her weight. That is why 1000cc bikes are necessary for the road. Thanks and keep up the great content!

I got a K5. No back ,wrist or knee ache for me. Its got hard suspension though. I can flop on a full tank back for longer journeys. Yr right its too quick for the road. Standing quarter in 10.1seconds at 144mph, 0-100 is about 6 seconds, top speed over 180mph. Its about 25kilos lighter than the new one and approx 30bhp less. The torque is lower on the K5 , max is 8,500rpm not 10,800 for the new one. So it very relaxing to ride at normal speeds! You cant use the engine on country lanes really - 120mph comes up too fast, 3/4 throttle for more than a few seconds gets into madness. 150mph on a B road? You can use the full ballistic acceleration joining A roads and motorways though - which is a blast. The engine doesnt feel like its working unless yr accelerating from over 80mph and only over about 120mph does it feel like its...trying. In the wet I have to brace my throttle hand on the bar end for precise throttle control other wise more than small throttle openings spins up the rear tyre - even in 6th - There's no ABS or modes or traction control so some care is required everywhere. Im 5'8" tall and slim at 10stone 10/150lbs/68kgs and 64 years old. So I am 30kilos lighter than a lot of the testers on RU-vid ! Its the fastest thing Ive ever ridden -much faster than my new Blackbird in '97 . When I was younger I cant say I would have used the engine more - I was just inclined to brake later and go faster around blind bends! I was a despatch rider for 10 years so i can still be a bit of a nutter - but the bike just laughs at me when I try to go fast on it. I LOVE IT :))

Crikey, all that torque and no rider aids. My slow GSX1400 (which sadly, I let go earlier this year as I wasn’t going to be where it lives) was all I needed & way more than I wanted. Irrelevant for the road I wouldn't agree with. Utterly and completely in excess of what you need for the road absolutely. What I've liked about the 1000s is just how unchallenged you feel on the road by other road users. You can shift so quickly without having to change gears that you can get out of any situation you're not comfortable with without having to think about it. Having said that, I've just bought an MV Agusta F3 800 distinctly because it's "not a thousand" 😂 I do plan on getting one of those gixers though should I get the chance. Too much for the road? Just about every modern sports bike can be used at 40% of its potential maximum on today's roads. After almost 40 years of petrol bikes I've just moved to a Zero FXE (in the Paris region where petrol bikes are basically becoming unusable) and am loving it. 135kg, 106nm of torque and it makes it from the very first twist. It handles like a dream too. As much as I've loved my 20 odd past bikes, I think that the future is electric and the 0-60 times are what counts these days not 70-230mph.

Yes and no. For the city like you say it can be a replacement. But to be honest, in a populated city, a scooter still rules as king, for the convenience and swirling in and out stuff. On anything highway , an electric bike sucks. Period. I loaned a zero fxe to see if it could replace my motoguzzi for my daily commute. 60km one way, 90% highway. I can tell you that I gave it back after 3 days. The range drops exponentially from its claimed 160km. I could barely make 60km doing 70/120km on the highway.(and I was riding like an angel. Riding slower behind a lorry at about 50 was better, a about 80km...but why ride a motorcycle if I have to keep thinking about the range and sticking behind a lorry? The range loss caused by drag is just too high. Basicly it's not ready yet for anything but city riding and some twisty small roads. Just don't go to far.

When they are the move, is that not equally "too much" considering the national speed limits and how quick those cars are?
