After watching a brilliant review of the TarpTent Scarp 1 by the ‪@Twin_Peaks_Outdoors‬ lads I thought I would share the modifications I have made that address some of the issues that people have complain about.
Mod 1: Inner door tie back toggle modification.
Mod 2: Shortening the main loop pole that then allows the the outer fly to almost reach the ground on both sides.
Mod 3: Lengthening the pitch lock guy ropes using 3mm dyneema cord.
Mod 4: Crossover poles bungee cord attachment to prevent sleeve wear. (This was made way before ‪@tarptent‬ addressed the issue)
Mod 5: Not in the video. Additional loop pole guy lines. Again using 3mm dyneema cord, one 3m length from the lower loop pole tab to the third one up.

Nice modifications mate, defo gonna attach a toggle to the inner tent tie back , the cutting of the arch pole is a great idea but not sure if I’ve got the bottle to follow it through lol but we will see 😁the lengthening of the corner guy outs is a good shout also gonna look into that as well, thanks for the shout out Lee appreciate it ATB Mark & Simon 👌👍

Excellent. I've done that to the tie backs. I considered cutting down my pole but not had the balls to do it! Couldn't you just cut once, taking 110mm off in one go rather than cutting 55mm off both ends?

1st and 3rd mods definitely useful, not convinced on the 2nd though. I'll need to check my 2021 model, as I don't recall any issues and wouldn't want the fly touching the inner even more. 🤔

Hi Wallace, cheers for watching the video buddy 🙌 By reducing the loop pole length as I have done makes absolutely no difference in reducing the hight between the inner and outer. All you are doing is allowing the side sinch up points to be fully sinched up reducing the hight equally from the floor to the bottom of the outer fly on both sides rather than having a gap of 50mm one side and a gap of 150mm on the other, the loop pole sleeve is still under the exact same tension as before 👍

@@blackmountainadventures I'll need to look at it again once pitched, I'm still not convinced. 😅

Yeah take a look, I’d be interested in seeing if there is a difference between the old model and the new one. Especially the pole length. 👍

Excellent, I had already done the door toggle and fitted a mini krab to the top loop, been considering the longer dyneema to the ends, will go for it! I expect it will improve fly spacing too. But the poles shorter...never thought of that! Nice one.

👍 The door toggles make a huge difference. The Pitchlock guy out lines I think are now absolutely perfect, much easier to get a really good pitch. To be honest I had sat and thought about about shortening the pole for a long time and what would be the consequences of doing so. After trying it out using a old pole from an old shelter first it was clear it was a no brainier however I suggest doing the experiment with an old pole yourself first. 👍

Nice easy mods, well described, will have a look at my 2021 version and see what can be done to improve it. Thanks for sharing

Hi again Neil, if you get a chance would you be able to measure the length of the loop pole on your scarp 1 please. I’m intrigued as to if there is a difference between older and newer models. 👍

Sorry been busy redoing bathroom and other shit. Just got back from lakes and measured tent. Yellow sleeve is 27mm high and loop for crossovers is 35mm , measured from seam.

I must be being particularly thick but surely cutting the ends off the pole will reduce the internal headroom? If so, it would certainly not be something I would ever entertain. In any case I don't think the existing gap between the bottom edge of the fly and the ground is excessive - and it aids ventilation. It's far less than in my Tarp Tent Notch and MLD Duomid. I think extending the corner and central end guys is really useful. Did it as soon as I got my Scarp in 2014. It especially helps when the ground is stony as it gives greater choice for the peg position. Good idea re door tie backs - they're always coming undone and I should have thought of your simple modification myself!

Cheers for watching dude. Yeah chopping off the ends off the pole dose seem counter intuitive. To be honest the tiny loss in hight is unnoticeable for me and the benefits are well worth it. I don’t know if you have ever had your Scarp 1 out in snow? The first time I did before modding the pole was a flipping nightmare. The snow and sleet was blowing straight under the side in to the porch and up the side of the inner tent. I was told that the first version of the Scarp 1 actually has a shorter pole allowing the sides to come down much closer? Unfortunately the guy didn’t get back to me with the measurements. What model do you have? ATB Lee

Great mods, I’ve just got my scarp 2 and was thinking about doing the tie back mod. I’m curious as to how you made the loop? Did you tie a knot or sow it? If you tied it what kind of knot did you use? Cheers

Ya wanna talk SCARP mods Buckey? Eh? Well lissen up. ;o) I got the optional Crossing Poles, shortened them 6 inches with a small pipe cutter and ran them INSIDE THE FLY. Remove the exterior Xing Pole webbing "pockets" and SEW INSIDE THE FLY AT APEX OF THE PITCH LOC CORNER STRUTS. This makes the downward pressure of the Xing Poles on the strut apex very strong and stable.. **Sew shortened, double-sided Velcro computer cable wraps INSIDE THE FLY AT THE 2 LOWEST REINFORCED EXTERIOR XING POLE STRAP LOCATIONS. This keeps the Xing Poles in place in very high winds and heavy snow load. I use our SCARP II (2 person) for car camping here in the American mountain west.

Excellent content - I saw the Twin Peaks review as well, also excellent. I've ordered my Scarp 1 and it should be arriving in November 2022. Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to measure by comparison. Meantime, is there a higher-quality shock-cord that you'd recommend, or just grab any old cord?

Sorry for the late response. I just used the Terra Nova 3mm yellow reflective guy lines with the appropriate line loks. They work perfectly. I also extended the pitchlock corner guy out points. I felt the ones that come are slightly to short and you can sometimes struggle to get a peg in because it’s so steep and short. It’s a cracking tent you will love it. 👍

I’ve got a milwaukee mini circular saw for cutting steal conduit. It gives a really clean cut but I still used a fine file just to take off the small burs. A junior hacksaw would do exactly the same trick if your confident. 👍
