I have the standard ~2007 hubba hubba version tent. I have set it up fly first also, followed by the foot print, then the inner body. I was looking into pole supports like you did with trekking poles, but with homemade aluminum poles. The trekking pole hack is a great idea. Thank you two gentlemen!

Bruv! You’re killin’ me! Please, if you are going to write in your description, “new shelter” and you show in your thumbnail the manufacturer and name of the shelter, why oh why wouldn’t you in your video TALK about the shelter and/or provide more detailed video of the shelter’s setup. I just don’t get it! While I enjoy seeing the beautiful countryside and get a little laugh at your “singing”, a large part of why I selected your video was your advertised content… that was ultimately undelivered. Please pardon my bluntness (Americans, am I right!?) but I genuinely want the best for you and your channel and I really enjoy the content that you do deliver. Hilleberg has put a small webbing point over the area of the hole. The webbing has been put there, so it blows upward in the wind and covers the hole. This will not cure the problem as the driving rain will go upwards and track down behind the webbing! And if the rain drives sideways.

I can confirm that this hole at the base of the Hilliberg Soulo vent zip is still present on the newest Soulo that arrived today! You should not have to silicone a new tent (one that does not state it needs seam sealing. 2:06

I have posted one or two comments and responses on this video concerning the ‘leaking Enan’ issue, as the concept of permanently adding either a stronger pole or double-poleing what is essentially a lightweight tent did not sit right with my professional engineering understanding that things should be used within their original design assumptions. After a number of comments along the lines of ‘this is common practice so should be fine’ I followed up with an email to Hilleberg and they have now responded, see below. I hope everyone finds it useful and it will certainly inform the way I use my Enan, especially ensuring proper pegging out of the pole ends: “Thank you for your email. We agree that the double poles and 10 mm poles are mostly meant for special severe weather trips and are not needed for most use. Especially the Enan being in our yellow label line is not necessarily the best suited for extreme conditions. It is always hard to know in these discussions what is based on reality and what is based on theory. The issue we see more of when it comes to stretched out seams on the Enan is if the tent is not properly pegged at the pole ends and the door is opened. That can cause undue stress on the seams. But in general, with proper set up and appropriate use, it is not a problem to use double 9 and 10 mm Poles”.
@missogyny4921
@missogyny4921 6 месяцев назад
I completely agree Dave, which is my point really. Occasional use of an additional pole when conditions are bad seems to be what Hilleberg imply in their literature and I’m sure is fine, but you do have to respect the fact that the Enan is designed as a lightweight light (although more than strong enough for most conditions), and simply swapping the pole for a 10mm one or always double poling it may cause problems. The red and black label tents use stronger fabrics and so on, so it’s probably less of an issue with them.

You will find that if you put a hose pipe around the area for a while, the leak is not instant. If you stop the hose, you will then see the leak appear. Hose again and it gets gradually worse.

The vent leak seems to be when it rains. After a while the water seaps in and soaks the zip, then it starts dripping. It looks to me like the point where the vent attaches to the zip. When the tent is packed away, the wire bends and pulls the vent away from the tent and makes a gap. The leak at the door tie-back is where the tie-back is stitched to the door. If you look closely you will see the stitch holes where the leak enters.

This video just popped into my feed. I find it funny how people think just because you spend a lot of money on a tent you can put these things through extreme conditions without issue. Be happy you had a shelter that didn’t implode on you and just seam seal the zip and and stitching. Also, you should guy out the top cover at the provided loops to increase extreme weather performance. If you want Hilleberg to seam seal the tent they will cost even more. If you haven’t spent this much money on other tents then maybe that’s what you should do and see how they compare. I have several Hilly tents. They all leak at the end of the zip. Tunnels included, I just seam seal them and that’s the end of it. Good luck!

Got an anjan 2 and an akto recently, they both had leaks, the anjan at tjhe first elastic toggle to tie the door open, tha akto at the at the corner of the vent. Not a big deal as easily sorted with silicone seam sealer. Other tents need to be seam sealed when you buy them, the hillebergs only need it at 1 point which is very good and not a problem. Also , the hillebrg does not need to have waterproofing reaplied from time to time lto the fabric ike other tents.

Seems like more than one year since you posted this, but YT says a year ago. Anyway, I ran across your video and see where the water is coming in at the zip. I have asked Hilleberg many times if they have corrected this- no answer. I was ready to buy a Hilleberg, but their $h!tty attitude of ignoring people has stopped me. Why should anyone have to patch a hole in a very expensive tent?
@donaldmccaithness2180
@donaldmccaithness2180 Год назад
Hilleberg describe themselves as 'The Tent Maker'. They should change this to 'The Not Very Good Tent Maker'. I have an Akto and the amount of condensation inside the inner tent is a serious issue. I have a Phoenix Phantom from 1979 and it is bone dry inside despite heavy rain and damp mornings. The Akto weighs 1.5kg (despite Hilleberg claiming 1.1kg) and the Phantom weighs 2.4kg. Clearly Hilleberg tents are overpriced - you might just as well stitch some plastic carrier bags together yourself!
@remamakeup654

Poor design having zips on top of the tent. All zips should be down the side of a tent, as all zips will leak witth enough water pressure.

A suggestion from hilleberg is to put a wet sponge inside and squeeze hard to see if any water comes through
@davegalloway7531
@davegalloway7531 5 месяцев назад
Why hilleberg say that, I don't know? You don't need to put a sponge on the vent zip. You can clearly see the large gap at the base of the vent zip. I just do not understand why Hilliberg can't put a zip stop or something else over the hole?

Recently got a new 2nd akto, noticed it had a leak also, at the end of the zip. It was coming straight therough the stitching on the vent , not under it. A bit of silicone seam sealer sorted it. My first akto may have had a leak aswell but only noticed it because got a groundsheet with the latest akto.

My first thought as an Engineer (and Enan owner), is that putting a 10mm pole into a sleeve designed for a 9mm is going to increase the tension on the stitches as the fabric resists the hoop’s increased tendency to straighten over the 9mm, especially bearing in mind that this is a Yellow Label/Kerlon 1000 fabric tent i.e. Hilleberg’s lightest. A row of stretched stitches appears to be the source of the leak. Occasional 9mm double-poleing when the weather is particularly bad is probably a better way to go. I think if I was Hilleberg I would be a bit miffed if someone had modified my careful design and then complained of its failure.
@DemiGod..
@DemiGod.. Год назад
Interesting. Jut got an anjan 2, would have got a 10mm pole to double pole it with the 9mm it comes with, but will get another 9mm pole instead,
@Oldrush
@Oldrush 11 месяцев назад
I believe that Hillebergs engineers designed these tents with the intention of being able to double pole all of their tents. They also probably safety test well above intended use and release to market to at least 200% of intended capability. I’ve had my Hillebergs in horrendous conditions with and without double poles including the Anjan 2, Enan, Akto, Niak and Staika and haven’t seam sealed any of them. They haven’t leaked at the stitching only at the zippers for me. Which is a problem but for these tents to stand up to 70mph gusts in sustained 50+ winds for me, I’m good with a few drops of water. The inner tents are water resistant and only my vestibule gets a few drops over the course of hours of hard sideways driven rain. I’m also an engineer.
@missogyny4921
@missogyny4921 11 месяцев назад
Yes of course, occasional double poles are intended, but not necessarily permanent use of a 10mm pole.

My thought's as someone that has used Hillebergs from the Artic Circle to Patagonia, to high altitude and also down to New Zealand on the other side in literally all weathers, including hurricane strenght winds at over 100mph and just about everywhere inbetween, for coming up 20 years is that you are incorrect. I base this on extensively using and own the Soulo, Enan, Akto, Nammatj and Tarra and have stayed in other models with climbing or expedition partners. This is also based on simple physics, the sleeve is not 9mm fitting and i've been using 10mm poles on my Akto's, well for coming up 20 years, infact i think the first one i converted was pre the current NSL poles (the ones that have the wider 11mm flare at the ends), i used 10mm poles on the soulo for well over a decade (note Hilleberg now make a 10mm version direct) and had to cut them from another set, add to this i've used 10mm Nammatj poles (same as Akto) for circa 8 years on the Enan, all without issue. The one thing i would say about the Enan is that it's better in the 1000 Kerlon as when they first came out it was the 600. What the 10mm poles do give is a disproportional effect to rigidity and strength of the structure for the marginal gain in weight (circa 50g in this case), i would recommend it to anyone esp as its an off the shelf item these days. And for reference double polling a 9mm will put alot more stess than a single 10mm pole interms of the fabric, how do i know this, because i've done it many times, and well double polling has never caused a material defect in any of the times i've done it. I remember being on a trip once and we actually took down a soulo in a horrendous storm, used the poles from it to make one good soulo and bunked up, the reality was we had got caught out in a situation (on an 10 week trip) where we should have been a Tarra, but sometimes 2 shelter's can be better than one for a number of reasons plus you've got a failsafe. To note it is quite common to swop up to 10mm poles, esp on the Soulo pre black label days and Akto in the small minority (probably way less than 2% these days given how popular hillebergs have become) of the community that use Hilleberg tent's for the extreame circumstances they where designed for including double polling (and i don't mean youtubers making 1 night content in a storm clickbait - aka MRT fodder - no refernce to this channel i add). The tent was in new condition, that was obvious by the lack of wear to the inner material's, the zip and outer attachment guys and points showed zero aging (again from someone that know's when certain parts need replacing or the tent replacing completely). Do not confuse a manufacturing defect with incorrect use. I have also had a pretty much identical use when testing a Saitaris in the UK prior to expedition. Whilst Hilleberg QA is second to none, people hand make these tents and well mistakes rarely but do occur. If the original owner had contacted hilleberg they would have sorted this straight away. Hilleberg are often guided by feedback in their tent designs, you only have to look at the 10mm soulo for a start, wouldn't surprise me if they actually upped the Akto or Enan to a 10mm pole, the problem is the mass market nowadays are obsessed by weight and alas lower weight sell's tents. I'm just glad that at least Hilleberg still have a stellar product, the same cannot be said for alot of large outdoor clothing brands that are now massive and well i woudn't trust their stuff in the UK, let alone remote shores - note anyone reading this regarding kit/gear check out PH designs, amazing kit.

@@DemiGod..Hey late to check this out, i'd ignore the previous engineer advice as even simple logic dictates 2 9mm poles create a great stetch than a single 10mm, even on his/her flawed logic. Check out my post, absolutely worth going with 10mm poles the only issue with the Anjan from memory is that there is nothing off the shelf, you would have to cut a mix of prob the short saitaris pole and a nammatj 3 for the front hoop. I would add that whilst people tend to up pole the Akto and Enan for single shelters, i'd question the logic of upping a yellow label 2 man shelter, as in if your intending to be going away in high winds, go for a red label, or black if severe and winter conditions. Use the right tent for the right occasion is what im poorly saying. I would in all honesty rather in high winds, drop the Anjan and ride out the storm in a good bivy (Anjan fly doesn't come to ground unlike Akto/Enan which also have a more smaller surface area of resistance (makes a difference).
