I'm the original owner of a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition with the 4.7-liter V8. I've been driving it every day for 17 years, and I still love it. My best advice to anyone thinking of getting a 4Runner: Be sure to get all the options and the color you want because you're likely to be driving it for decades.

How do you maintain it? How do you know when to change out fluids? Oil changes....etc.

2006 Toyota Sport still going strong and still beautiful with 210,000 miles. My wife and I saved cash for our next 4Runner but we just haven’t needed to buy one. They only get sexier with age. Just told her yesterday that we’ll go all out since we’ll be driving it for 20 years!

We just got one too! My genius dad though traded our Tesla model S cause he thought there was something wrong with it. He got a Volvo xc40 recharge and that turned out to be shit ( it drove 200 km then needed a recharge). We ended trading that for a brand new 2022 4runner. Amazing car but it hurts to drive it ( what with the gas prices and everything).

There will be a redesign possibly for 2023, but truthfully, they do not need one to sell this vehicle. As it is now, every 4Runner is sold before it gets to the lot. For all the complainers about this "old" design and technology, they need to remember who is buying this vehicle. White males between the ages of 40 and 65 are the primary purchasers of new 4Runners. In that demographic, reliability is the #1 factor in choosing a vehicle. Bells, whistles and redesigns are secondary or even a non issue. This age group also considers resale value, but likely drives cars into the ground before they trade or sell. For this demographic, the 4Runner is a gift from God. They get their leather, sun roof (they refuse to call it a moon roof), and a lot of storage space. They get an off road vehicle, but are unlikely to drive it off road. They prefer the "tried and true" design, technology, engine and suspension, rather than the newest, latest, and greatest "UNTESTED" things. The only disappointment to them is the gas mileage, but they will live with it. If we were in the 1960's or 1970's, this would be a discussion about Cadillacs.

100%, good comment, your reasoning is why I got one last July. Luckily I got my special order in in time to get a Gray Nightshade before pricing went crazy. I was coming out of a Subaru Ascent Touring, and it was down to the Telluride or the 4Runner. I really wanted old school, bullet proof, limited bells and whistles, etc. I drove the Telluride (SX Prestige) and didn't t like it near as much as I thought I would. I love the 4R, love the "ancient" drivetrain too. My wife has an MDX Advance which she loves, but she said the other day the 4Runner is her favorite vehicle so far. It's just honest and basic, but seems "bulletproof" like that's the one we will want to drive if there is a zombie apocalypse. lol Would have preferred the TRD Pro, but it didn't have parking sensors. Yes, that was a deal breaker for the wife. Also love seeing that it was actually made in Japan and no less from the same plant that rolls out the Land Cruiser. Also, I am right in the targeted demographic you mentioned. lol

@@merica7050 I have been in marketing for over 20 years with a major corporation. I aim product development and advertising at particular demographics. I know what I am talking about. 4Runner sales prove me right. Not only is this information not out of my butt, but I could also go deeper into region, socioeconomic classification, and health related purchase preferences. Yes, purchase patterns are governed by the relative health of consumers.

They are nearly impossible to get. Especially the Limiteds. And dealers are asking and getting $10-$15k over MSRP. They likely will bring what you pay for them next year if you want to sell. The Land Cruisers are insane right now as well as 21 is the last year for the naturally aspirated V8 and no gimmicky turbos.

The '22 Toyota Safety Sense upgrades with panoramic view are a GAME CHANGER for the 4R. LED beams and extreme LED fog lights also truly light up the road compared to previous models. Limited trim SmartKey fob has REMOTE START already programmed in - no subscription service needed thru Toyota. Limited models have real leather-trimmed seats and not SofTex synthetics. The 4Runner Limited is an outstanding SUV. It is timeless and very sharp. You can dress it up or dress it down. It has arguably the best resale value of any vehicle on the market. They are expensive, however, very good investments for a vehicle.

2015 LTD, Nautical Blue Metallic, 155k miles. Drives as he described and just the same as it did when I drove it off the lot. Surprisingly quiet on the highway, tight steering, and the JBL system is pretty stout for being stock. Only issues have been the doorlock actuators (on my 3rd driver side, and my second passenger side. Passenger side hasnt worked in a while and driver side is intermittent.) I also replaced the A/C fan motor, but that was an easy DIY. And it would be tough to find any blemishes on the leather seats. Fully plan on getting to at least 300k.

I had a 1984 or 86 I can't remember the exact year. That was back when it was 2 door, 4 cylinder, I did not have turbo, roo, bar in the back. Drove it for 12 years. Had to put a rebuilt engine in it at 161,000 miles, it got hot and cracked the block I was told. Transmission had to be rebuilt twice. Finally got rid of it at just over 300,000 miles. Now I have a 2014 4Runner, I think it's a trail edition with 4wd, crawl control, rear locker, ATrac. Have just over 113,000 miles on it. I love 4Runners but not sure about the changes that I have read about with the 2023 year model.

I have a’14 4Runner limited. Interesting that you praise the x-reas system. I too love the performance. But my shocks leaked at 50k. And that’s with no off roading or abuse. Fortunately I had the platinum extended warranty. The cost to replace the struts was over $4000. Maybe my situation was a fluke. But it’s something to consider. Ie, if you have the x-reas system, the extended warranty might be an attractive option.

The 2015 and 2016 cameras were very clear. Taken to service department and even reported to the Toyota Representatives at Toyota Motor Company. It appears that this is something that I will have to be content with. My only question is why was the 2015 and 2016 backup cameras excellent in clarity but the 2022 is blurry. The suspension was all over the place, noisy interior, Green ECO light glaring at me with no way to turn it off, goofy button\control layout ,etc.... I can go on & on ! 4Runner for the 4WD (2 speed transfer case), limited slip differential, heavy duty construction, reliability, resale value, and good looks. There is no road or trail that can beat it up. Like other crossovers, the Passport's main advantage is fuel economy. The AWD torque management system is excellent in low traction conditions, but it's no rear locking differential, or 4WD in low range.

Always the same comment with the Tacoma and the 4Runner, this is not meant for speed, yes it is slow. That is not what it is made for. That is the part that just makes me cringe, you drive another vehicle and wow. These, not really, not mean’t for that. It has a governor transmission that doesn’t let you zoom. That sucks!

Right now it’s hard to say but I would say wait for the redesign of the 4Runner or the GX.

@@toyshop98 well said, if you don’t want all the tech I say the 4Runner cause the reliability on them is outstanding. The redesign is gonna Hanna have everything like The New Tundra has

They are selling like crazy. The design and engineering are time tested and bulletproof. People that buy this want reliability, and they get it. Huge updates bring new bugs that have already been worked out in this model. There will be a redesign in 2023 and people will continue to buy this model on the used market.
