BMW sold over 61,000 1250GS's last year, Triumph sells less than 1/6 of that. The question is: has Triumph lost its identity by trying to be like a GS?

As a GS competitor Triumph did a great job, to me it's a "why not" alternative option, although when you get there to buy such a bike it's difficult to not buy the GS.

The first most balanced review for this bike I've seen so far, too many other reviewers will have just flat written it off as a non starter, you would think they are on the BMW payroll, the same bias that Yamaha was subjected to with the Super Tenere, which many still brought, exactly a good bike at the time, but you can see why Yamaha discontinued it, the bias ruined economic sales figures, so kudos to Triumph for punching on with a technically better bike this time, I wish them great success, for the effort they have made.

I have to test one. If it is close to GS, I will probably buy it. Even though I like the look of GS, GSs are basically everywhere you look. For me the most important things are agility, shaft drive, smoothness of QS...and this tiger looks like it has all of that. 👍👍

The reason BMW GS’s are everywhere is because they are simply that good and worth every penny. This Triumph bike is impressive but it is NO R1250GS Adventure. I just ❤️ my 2021 GSA!

Great review. I think people...should ride what they want. Do you know why I ride a GSA? Because I always wanted one, that's why. Someone wants a Yamaha or Triumph, more power to you. I remember bike reviews in the 90's when folks were writing that 1000's felt like 600's because reduced weight, more power and all that. That 1998 1000cc whatever would be a complete dog on the track compared to modern bikes today. Here we are in 2022 and the tech is always improving, adventure bikes are everywhere. It's your money, ride what you want and understand the day you throw a leg over the newest model at the dealership the thing to eclipse that tech is already under development. What a great world we live in.

The suspension looks like a horst link (a four bar design) , found on most all mountain-bikes. The reason why they used on a mountain is that if you know where to put the pivots you can separate the three mai forces (braking, acceleration and bump) so it can give you a good platform in every situation + the adițional shock link and a good shock, it's almost a infinite tuning option on how to make the bike feel in all situations.

Sorry man, can't get that here in Europe, I think only in North America they still sell it in 2022 as the "ES" but they are probably left over 2021's. They've stopped production and are just selling the remaining stock. I think Yamaha will update it soon and then they'll sell it everywhere again. Then I can get my hands on the updated version, the "ES" version is hard to find, new, even in the States...at least that's what I'm told. :)

@craigfinnegan8534 2 года назад
@@NothingToProve The ideal redesign for the Super Tenere I'm hoping to see introduced before I take recourse to the new Tiger 1200 (about 2 yrs from now) is a larger displacement version of the outgoing Super Tenere's engine wrapped in the Tenere 700's "dirt bike DNA" style, but keeping the ST's shaft drive; basic rider assists only (cruise control, abs) to keep costs and weight down and please simpletons like me; and a substantial fuel capacity like the Africa Twin Adventure Sports' 6.5 gal tank. Less technology is counterintuitive, but look at the success of the Tenere 700. Because there are two ways to deal with tough competition - try to be better at the same things, or offer something that rivals don't. To me, the second way is smarter when there are so many rivals offering so much (and at such high prices). Ironically, in ADV bikes these days, what's not being offered is simplicity over complexity. Some of us prefer riding a motorcycle over piloting an airliner!

Nice review, thanks. I'm a former Tiger owner and for me there were two key issues which made me trade it in. The less concerning issue was wind noise. No screen worked but an ugly Madstad did the best job. So question 1 how did you find wind noise. The more important issue was centre of gravity, not necessarily weight. I found the former model very top-heavy and any little wobble two up with luggage I found the bike wanted to tip over, so much so I dropped it twice at a standstill on badly cambered junctions. How did you find the weight distribution and CoG? It still looks like the weight is high up to me. Thanks. 👍

Nice review Scott! To mention the slow quickshifter.. I remember the one on the 900 gave me the same feeling. Perfect (as you say) half throttle but but a bit slow on the sporty side. No dealbreaker for me though, ready signing for a brand new Rally Pro instead of a GS or 1290 😎 No GS because I’m not paying that amount of money and next year there will be a new one, and no 1290 because.. well it’s a KTM and they like to change colors every year and/or announce a update model.

For anyone who doesn't mind doing some reading, here's a couple of issues with the new Tiger you need to look out for - the hydraulic clutch not being adjusted properly at the dealership, and leaking clutch slave cylinders.... "New bike: 2022 Tiger 1200 GT Explorer Picked it up on Friday, rode away very carefully and gingerly, new bike and all getting familiar with the biting point etc is something that just comes with time. Naturally, new engine has run in requirements and has its restrictions, can't go above 3.5k rpm for first 100 miles so it's very careful riding and no high revs - because of this one wouldn't notice a clutch issue, because you're treating it like a newborn. The first time I noticed the engine not giving its full power was when I went for my first overtake - pulled the trigger and it revved without pulling the bike. Me being the optimistic chump I am assumed this was a rev-protection feature to do with the run-in period....surely it's not a clutch issue... I'm obviously taking the bike back to have it sorted, but I'm after the following advice because this for me has killed the joy of my first zero-mile machine: When it came to this process, I did it all by the book - the bedding in the lot, it's precious to me because I want the absolute best engine for its entire life time. Now I find the entire time the clutch has been slipping, from 1st gear on every launch, to 5th and 6th gear when trying to pull away at 60/70/80 MPH - engine revved and clutch slipped, it took about 30 seconds to get from 70 to 80 because it was slipping so hard. Could this have damaged the run-in process? When we run in are we doing it only to the engine pistons side or to the crank/clutch side also? Is there any, and I mean ANY way, this stupid screw up will have cause some kind of minor damage to the new perfect engine during its first 300miles? 250 miles later and we've unlocked up to 5k rpm. Now it's painfully obvious that the clutch is slipping:. Any attempt to take off quickly, even within the 5k range, results in the revs flying and the bike not pulling. In addition to the horrible feeling powerless engine, I stopped to find oil had leaked surrounding the main engine oil cap, but was unable to tell if this had leaked from the cap itself or from the hydraulic clutch. As for the hydraulic clutch, apparently its somewhat different to previous versions and is externally adjustable, even though its hydraulic - it caught them out and they apologized; its now its adjusted and working as intended. I just got unlucky with an o-ring and a clutch that caught the technicians off-guard - please do learn from this and if the clutch feels like it has a very late biting point when you ride it away, or after you unlock 5k RPM it isnt pulling with the revs, take it back right away and let them know its a new style clutch! They were able to fix my clutch with just an adjustment, haven't had any issues since - however I am still getting a slight oil leak and they've replaced the oil cap o-ring twice now, if it leaks again I'll take note of your issue and push for a full inspection on the slave cylinder! 600 miles and 5 days with new Tiger 1200 GT PRO and clutch not clearing. Located to leaking clutch slave cylinder. Replaced under warranty and dealer told me that replacement cylinder looked very different to original. Also, another bike in showroom had leaking slave cylinder for which Triumph was ending replacement. Bad batch or design fault? What is the extent of recall? No problems since, further 600 miles and enjoying bike, drive and handling is awesome. Looks like a slave cylinder leak. Triumph will replace under warranty. I would go sooner rather than later. My bike is going back again on Saturday for investigation into headlight mount. The headlight can be moved, as if the cushion has become dislodged. The slave cylinder is on top of the clutch housing behind the guard that is next to the oil filler cap - the master cylinder is on the handlebar. The cable going to the lever on the clutch housing comes from the slave cylinder and there is some manual adjustment. I have a new (3 weeks old) GT Explorer with exactly the same issue as yours. I called my Triumph dealer today and they said - master cylinder fault and to send it in via Triumph recovery. Really not happy about it. Why over engineer a bike - it’s more complicated, more expensive and less reliable than a traditional cable. Miffed!"

I understand the purpose of the T plane crank and although I have never ridden one I am certain that it is more tractable at low RPM. However, in the end it is a triple, not a twin. IMO Triumph should exploit the natural 120 degree firing order of the triple with its fantastic midrange and top end punch rather than try to emulate a twin down low. If they want low down grunt they should put a twin in that bike, its not like they don't know how to make one.

And I had to keep looking down at the left controls to make sure I pressed the correct button, if I didn't then things would go badly...this happened several times during this ride. @@NothingToProve Thanks for this video, Scott - it's my favorite among the many I've seen of the new Tiger 1200. In case you didn't see this in the main comments, here's what I've learned about the 'catch' in the on-throttle... - My private mechanic said he couldn't remap the engine himself, but maybe I could work that into a deal at the dealership. - The Triumph service manager near me (Euro Cycles in Daytona Beach) said he's ridden both the old Tiger 1200 and the new one, has himself noticed that catch in the on-throttle, and he thinks the problem isn't in the engine mapping, it's in either the transmission or the shaft link. - He says either Triumph will fix it in a couple of years or it can be fixed now by having the engine re-tuned either at your own dealership or doing it yourself by purchasing online a Stage 1 Handheld Flash for $800 to $1,000 from BT Moto (although they don't have one available yet specifically for the new Tiger 1200, keep checking because they have them for Triumph's other big sellers and it shouldn't be long before they have one for the new Tiger also).

Another great and comprehensive review! I swapped my 2014 GSA for an Africa Twin DCT ES in part because it’s NOT a BMW. This bike is on my future watch list. However, the swing arm is horribly bulky and complex unlike the GS. The uneven firing is, to me, a mistake. A 120 crank is smooth whereas this will give a chugging sensation at lower revs under power as does the Africa Twin. Part of the GSA’s appeal to me is the 360 crank inherent in the flat twin. Even at low revs no chugging. I would guess the CoG to be higher than the GSA with the 30 litre tank. A last question, what’s it like to pick up should you drop it on the trail? Thanks, Ian

Thank you very much for your informative review. I'm a long-time Harley owner looking to switch to an adventure bike. This morning I rode a 2022 BMW GS 1250 Rallye. It was definitely an adjustment in how I felt, switching from a Harley Fat Bob. Tomorrow, I am test riding a 2023 Triumph Tiger GT Pro and am hopeful that I like it. QUESTION: I'm 5'8" and found that I'm up on my toes at a stop on both the BMW and the Triumph. It's certainly not as comfortable at a stop as to what I'm used to. Does anyone have any recommendations on lowering the Triumph a bit?

I've owned both the Tenere and the GS. I'd say the GS is a better allrounder. However for the money and the rock solid reliability the Super Tenere is probably the most underrated motorcycle on the market which is why I have decided to take mine to the grave. A lot of people crap on the telever front end on the BMW. It has its limitations on handling and cornering, however nothing has a plusher more civilized ride on the highway. Good luck.

Only time will tell if it stays in production, I hope it does, I'm hearing good things about it but availability and sales numbers are just not up to the other bikes yet - 10 & 15 times less than the Twin and GS. Which have been around for over 40 years, so Harley has some catching up to do and history does not favor Harley, when they deviate from the classic American cruiser, that's just the facts and not my opinion. I am an American so I hope they do catch up and I will get to ride one sometime in the near future. take care, Scott

Why would you buy this Tiger and not the GS only just to be different, even if you find the GS rides a lot better??? I rode this new Tiger and the R1250GS back to back, and the Tiger had a lot of play at the driveshaft, quite a clunky QS (Tiger 900 a lot better), on/off throttle response, even in Street mode. Nice video - could you add the Super Tenere ES to your chart? It’s still being sold in the US as a 2022 model. Your chart is a great comparison tool. Just an opinion…This bike is very intriguing. From personal riding observations, the BMW 1250 GS/GSA seems to be the king of Adventure Touring bikes in the western USA. If Triumph wants market share they need to incentivize buyers to switch. I’ve noticed there seems to be a tier level of Adventure bike riders. The Japanese bikes (AT, ST, and VStrom) are all much better buys and less powerful than the European bikes (KTM, BMW, Triumph). It isn’t likely Triumph will capture market share from the Japanese bike owners. This means they need to beat KTM and BMW on both perceived reliability and price. I ride a 2019 Suzuki VStrom 1000XT Adventure. If I were changing bikes, I’d want a BMW, but most likely buy the Super Tenere primarily because of reliability and cost.

I traded in an ST after 6 months. It's a great bike, very reliable indeed and the top of the engine's so accessible (fuel tank flips up on hinges). But besides how heavy it felt, two things I didn't like about it to pay special attention to on a test ride - 1) Power delivery too limber. 2) Not enough agility (load up the bike for a long trip and it has no agility at all).

@@vtrack1963 I've been riding a chain drive for years now and I know how you feel about shaft drives. I even have an automatic chain luber (Scottoiler) and it saves me a lot of hassle with routine chain maintenance, but it's still not as good as having a shaft drive. Besides initial installation, the Scottoiler is quirky, you have to continually keep your eye on it and tweak it, and cast-off lube is very messy. Then there's still chain and sprocket replacement and chain adjustment. Any one thing isn't a big deal, but the sum total is a burden.

Many low cost newer Super Teneres 1200 and Tiger 1200 for sale - languishing, much cheaper than GS equivalents. Daylight, family at home, and three thugs in motorcycle gear break the electronic gates and lift the front end and wheel it into a van - observed by my daughter who was on the phone to the unresponsive police. My colleague who works at the same place as me has had 4 of them stolen in 7 years. He doesn't bother claiming on insurance anymore.
