I bought this TWSBI Eco used to compare with the other piston fillers that TWSBI has called out for copying their design; the Moonman T1 and the Narwhal Nautilus. Now it is time to review the TWSBI Eco on its own. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

Hi Doug, from Australia. Perfectly timed review for me, because I have just unboxed the TWSBI which I bought with a couple of Indian pens from FPR. Your review inspired me to unbox the TWSBI because looking at it had not. I got the TWSBI, inks and nibs because postage to Aus was $70 but free postage internationally kicked in if I spent $70. So easy decision. Now back to the TWSBI - F steel nib, now inked with Waterman's Encre Bleu Inspiration for all our French Canadian friends. Inked easily because Waterman designs bottles to be used. Wrote straight away so no inky fiddling with the nib. F steel so not much line variation, colour of ink co-ordinates with the pen. OCDC! So workman-like cheap pen, I can see why people like it, but I am not inspired. It won't be a traveling pen, which means it isn't one that I love enough to take it with me. I've inked it with a colour I use occassionally, and it will be a pen that I will use, when I want to use that ink, not the other way around. BTW on the box it is called an ECOT, not sure if this is an American thing. Again thanks for the video and for teaching me so much over the last couple of years that I and much of the rest of the world have been locked down/in. Stay safe and keep your great Canadian sense of humour. When I was living in the US, I used to hop across the border to BC to meet my clients and get an injection of humour and irony.

ECO T has a triangular grip. The Eco has a tapered cylindrical grip. This makes a difference in how the pen feels. If you did not order an ECO T and the grip is indeed triangular, contact the seller. If the grip is tapered cylindrical then it's just in the wrong box.
@McAmeron089III
@McAmeron089III 2 года назад
TWSBI ECO-T is almost the same as a regular ECO model but the section is sort of more triangular-shaped as is the cap and filler-knob. Otherwise samey same. Not an American thang. I prefer ECO-Ts and have two of them. G'day y'all.

Good review, Doug. I think what you reveal here is the issue of a pen company coming up with a model that became popular but has now been outflanked by rival companies. The material, fit and finish, and even nibs size has been further refined and done better by Narwhal and others. What TWISBI needs to do is resolve their plastic cracking issue (which may have been done), but more importantly, make the necessary design tweaks to make it a more desirable pen than their competitors. Use acrylics with color variations for example. Make an Eco using a no 6 nib. Upgrade the trim. Jinhao is doing it with the Centennial and Kaigelu with their 316a, coming up with some gorgeous looks for their strong selling models. That they would rather strong arm their rivals indicates they aren't willing to do so.

@stefanwood2182 2 года назад
@@eatmelily To each their own. I still hear of cracking issues. No issues with the narwhals I own. Better looking plastics and larger nib. Feeds can be replaced on the cheap. The other parts not so much.
@gunsmokeandghouls
@gunsmokeandghouls 2 года назад
I've heard they made changes a year or so ago to resolve cracking issues. but it's possible older versions are in some retailers stock and being sold. Also a lot of the cracking seems to be a result the result of removing the feed/nib. However that's not always the case. Ive seen a reviwer where the cap literally fell apart with normal use. Twisbi should be more concerned with their quality control than what their competition is supposedly doing.
@stefanwood2182

@@gunsmokeandghouls good to know. My particular beef with twisbi is not the cracking, but the uninteresting looks and the number 5 nib, which I dont like on this particular type of pen.

Really nice review Doug. For a moment I thought you surrender to TWSBI fandom (just kidding ). I've to admit I'm a bit biased about that company's product since I used a couple of pens and I always find it too pricy for what actually the pen is (nib quality aside). Something similar happened to me about Kaweco.... till I bought a DIA 2 FP.... really, really nice pen with a small nib (though I changed it for a Bock 076 gold nib).

I have an eco with a EF nib. I use it for drawing, so the wet flow is quite practical since the pen can keep up with fast strokes. I was quite pleased with my eco for about a year, until hairline cracks appeared in the grip section. I agree with you that the pen is overpriced. I doubt i will buy another twsbi because of the cracking. I have cheaper pilots and lamys wich perform just as well or better with no cracks at all after 4 years of use.

Fascinating review, I must say I was very surprised by the pen filling thing. Definitely something to order! Also interesting that your Eco was such a gusher. I've had one for years in transparent orange with a stub nib, as well as a black one with a fine nib. Both are on the dry side, which is fine for the fine nib, but less ideal for a stub. The fine nib in my case is definitely an extra fine. Any similar hacks on getting that a bit wetter, ideally without having to order brass shims...?
@InkquiringMinds
@InkquiringMinds 2 года назад
I do what I call "Doug's Seven Strokes to Inky Happiness" technique. Press firmly down on the nib, writing seven short downstrokes in sequence. Not too much pressure so you won't spring the nib, but enough pressure to make the tines separate a little to give a fatter line. Then check the wetness. It works beautifully on typically dry Penbbs fine nibs.

@InkquiringMinds

I don't have an 823 but they are gold and much larger with a completely different feed, so they are incompatible with the #5 size steel Pilot nibs that are interchangeable in so many of the inexpensive Pilots.

Very interesting. I have four Pilot Explorers to which I have fitted con 70 converters and stub nibs off metropolitans. TWSBI also have portable Vac 20 bottles you can use with Ecos. There's also a tapered,flat based scavenger thingy that comes with their 70 Mil ink bottles ( like Pilot) you can fit inside the bottle - helps you get the last dram of ink into your pen- no mess. I use mainly TWSBI 1.5/1.1 stub nibs. No fire hydrant dramas like a certain brands Indian pens we've both used.

@@InkquiringMinds You have to lift both caps off the diamond inkwell and use it like a regular inkwell. With the 580 you take that front nib section off, then mount the rest of the pen to the nipple on the top of the inkwell and draw up ink. You are then meant to get a full mess free pen fill of ink. In real life, the fit of the pen body to the inkwell nipple isn't so great. Same with the Vac 700R and mini Vac pens to the V20 portable inkwells. There are techniques required to get a full pen of ink. I guess it's like you with PENBBS,a certain brands features appeal. It is funny but as I have delved into fountain pens I have tended to associate them with finer things. Badger hair shaving brushes, Goat skin covered Bibles, Good Scotch or fine pipe tobacco etc. These TWSBI pens in the demonstrator style just scream cheap to me. Maybe once they come out with an ebonite pen I may bite but I have no need for bare utility in a fountain pen. This is something that I have struggled with after watching many of your PenBBS 456 Reviews. I had to try one and finally settled on a Black/Clear/Chrome version. They unfortunately don't have any opaque acrylics on offer at the moment. I am sure I will enjoy it but really want something in a butterscotch or something similar :) Thank you for your reviews! Yet another great video review! You make it look easy. I know it's not. FWPress- Tanzanite Sky is one of my very favorite inks. I find it is pretty wet in my Pilot 823. Have not used it in my TWSBIs yet; but,overly wet medium and broad TWSBI nibs have never been a problem for me. They have always been smooth writers. No experience with TWSBI 1.1mm nib. The only true gusher I ever had was a Lamy 2000 BROAD;like a firehose. No experience with Moonman or Narwahls;just wondering what one does if there's a warranty problem with either of those pens. Do they have good customer service? When I had a question about one of my TWSBIs I sent an email and got an answer back in minutes from Philip Wang hisself. Maybe that is what ups the price? Aisle B interested to see what companies comply with the TWSBI mandate. Thanks for the info on the Pilot Explorer. Been meaning to pick one up. Already have some CON-70 converters(one in a Kakuno). Also nice to hear the TWSBI wrench fits the Pelikan M800. Hope to have a Pelikan M800 or 1000 some sweet day. I keep buying cheaper pens when I need to save for a Pelikan.

Lovely review. I wonder if Pilot should raise an issue to retailers saying that the TWSBI Vac700R is a copy of their Custom 823 filling system? Of course they won't. They take the high road. It is all silly, really. I have the Vac700R Iris. Lovely pen. The Custom 823 is iconic and the nib is wonderful. That they have the same filling system is not a concern. TWSBI should have taken the same road with their pens. I have found TWSBI nibs are as you described, utilitarian, not great. Plenty of other pens that perform better, like Pilot or penBBS. I adore the Eco’s. The many fun colours they make them in is so important to me. I use lots of very colourful inks and these pens match up to give me Fountain Pen crayons. I buy every colour that comes out. My only beef is the fragile nib feed which always loses fins when I try to pull one. Most of my Eco’s have nibs in too tight to pull them without destroying the fragile feed. Eco’s make Fountain Pens fun. I love the aesthetic and they are light and comfortable in my hand. These pens are just as important to me as my gold nibbed pens. I think TWSBI’s mandate to retailers to stop selling Narwhal if they want to keep TWSBI, is outrageous and stupid. It is unethical and likely illegal to make this demand. If this really was an issue of copyright or patent infringement, they would take Narwhal to court and seek an injunction. Fountain pen retailers may be the last of the businesses still largely independently owned and often family run. TWSBI will do an about face on this within 60 days, I predict, with public apologies and grovelling, if they want a North American business. Doug, your reviews are a treasure. I appreciate seeing you do things like fix a nib or use a Pineider Traveling Ink Well. This is how I learn . I am also a CFPE member and an Inkquring Minds member. Cheers.

D Fire P, I mean that they are losing the goodwill of the Fountain Pen Community, the consumer who buys multiple pens every year. That is never a good business plan. They have always sold through their own website and through Amazon, so they might not want independent retailers. But they did not close the independent sales channel, they just made unfair and non-competition demands of it. A terrible look.

I hate TWSBI for doing that But they make a good product. I said somewhere I have feed leak issue, after it got sorted the pen writes beautifully. I would rate it one rank under Kakuno tho

Thanks for another entertaining and well made review, sir. You're videos are by far the best fountain pen reviews on this platform. I'd never seen the Pneider - travellers ink well - I did try and find a second hand Visconti one - but they are way out of my price range (like their pens!). I also wanted to try some Ferris Wheel Press inks but the big size was far too expensive and those small ones looked far too small and I was scared off. The ink well looks perfect! Thanks again (do we get some more fun emojis sir?)

I tried two nibs with my Eco and they both suck. The EF nib is scratchy and false starts all the time. The F nib less scratchy but false starts and sometimes skips. They don't write well out of the box, have to be cleaned, unlike pilot or lamy that just need to be inked. I love the design of the TSWSBI but can't stand the nibs, would take every other nib.

FWIW, Doug, there may be a small group for whom I think the TWSBI 580 MAY have the edge over The likely excellent Pilot Explorer. I speak of we misguided EF devotees. It is true, BBs have more fun. And Stubs have even more fun than that! But some of us are just weird that way. And the thing about EF nibs is that they can be pretty scratchy and unpleasant to write with. And they can, consequently, force us away from the inks with which we yearn to write. Which can make some of us pitifully sad. But whereas TWSBI’s super-wet nibs are a horror for you swish BB and stub folk, for we EF people, they are the solution to our problem! Well… sometimes. I haven’t got a Pilot Explorer with an F nib, but I imagine it writes at least as well as my beloved Pilot Metropolitan F. And that writes VERY WELL INDEED. But it is still less wet than my TSBI EF, and a touch more finicky about ink choice. So for me and, perhaps, some others like me, A TWSBI 580 EF is a much loved daily writer and yes, worth the extra $20 VS Explorer F + con-70 converter combination. PS: your explanation of how to use the Pineider filler is NIFTY! Thank you so much for that!!!

I have total about 10 TWSBI ECOs in various colours, because I like the nib and the colours. However 3 of them developed a a crack on the nib section without any external damage, looks like the cracks are all in the shape of nib outer shape line. Very disappointed 😞 do anyone else have the same issue? Or just me that am I using too much pressure while writing?

@stephanfeinen3923
@stephanfeinen3923 2 года назад
The first series of all TWSBI demonstrator models seemed to have been plagued by that issue. Polycarbonate is a delicate material and you need some experience to avoid stress-induced cracking when injecting it. Apparently they now have solved this issue as I didn't hear about cracking pens from TWSBI in the last years. You can still destroy those pens when applying the wrong cleaning chemicals as Jason (WaskiSquirrel) accidentally showed some time ago with his Pilot Custom 823. I have a TWSBI Eco for some years now and it's still intact (and the F-nib writes just "fine") and I like it but since I'm not a big fan of demonstrator pens overall I guess that this will remain my only TWSBI pen.

@@stephanfeinen3923 I know they posted a note a few years back saying "Mission Accomplished" on the cracking issue. It is hard to tell if it is true or not since all the cracking issues that continue to be raised in the various forums might just be old stock. However, I reviewed two brand new TWSBI Swipe models and without even being used, the polycarbonate shows stress fractures around the clip connections. It makes me a little suspect.

I had a Twsbi Eco with a 1.1 Jowo nib. I didn't like the wrench that came with it. I am not mechanical. And the fear of their brittleness. Today, conservative me uses a Jinhao X750 shimmering sands with a Bock 1.1 nib. Love it.

My Twsbi Vac 700r is the Best pen I've ever bought . Great feel, not Wet as you said, and higher quality then my narwhal...Plus being a smoother writer then any of the "wannabe's"....I'll stay off the "woke" "Lets dis this" bandwagon....My God, it's 30 dollars, Most of us probably spend more than that on a fast food lunch.

I was never a big fan of Twsbi pens, in general. Bought a few (five) of them years ago, gave away all except my Diamond Mini and a 580AL. The Eco seems to be universally popular, but I was put off by the looks of the pen, alone. The 580 looks so much nicer. Besides, I had decided 2-3 years ago to keep pens with Jowo nibs, down to my essential minimum in my collection. I have a few other pens at a quite similar price point as the Eco that I like far better.

I couldn't agree more with you when you describe the Twsbi Eco as "chunky" and "utilitarian." Of course it gets the job done but, like we have said before, I'm that is just part of the reason why anyone uses a fountain pen. You have to like the way the pen looks and feels when using it or when it is just laying on your desk. I myself, simply don't like this pen.

> no grudge against twsbi Just wait till someone denounces penbbs and the peace loving doug will have to start a crusade 🤣 Joke aside. Thanks for the review. I definitely won't get twsbi with their whole fiasco with moonman/narwhal. Personally I don't side with company, but when one company actively seeks to remove options from me as a consumer, I know who to not buy from. Looking at you too kaweco. Plus, Chinese (China based) fountain pens are just way cheaper and have more beautiful models.

Two reasons why I have never purchased a TWSBI: 1. No 5 nibs 2. Too many reports of inconsistent ink flow. Pens shouldn't come with surprises that don't put a smile on your face the very first time you use them. YMMV.

I have always experienced some rotation of the pen as I write. Must come from unnecessary pressure on the thumb. Just wondering if those speed bumps on the section are intended to stop that rotation or am the only one in the world experiencing that issue. 👍👨‍🦳🇨🇦🤔

The ECO-T is the one with the triangular grip. The regular ECO has a normal, round grip. The triangular grip, like the Safari, is like wearing orthopaedic shoes. It is supposed to "correct" your grip.
