My 2022 3.0 Duramax Trail Boss averages 24 mpg. Have gotten as high as 30 mpg over a 50 mile stretch going 60 mph. Will consistently get 22 mpg going 80 mph down the highway. Averaged 14.5 mpg pulling my 6,500 lb travel trailer on a trip last summer.
I've the 2023 Diesel 3.0L Trail Boss w/9k miles. I thought I'd get much better mpg than I do, so I was bummed. Didn't realize the Trail Boss' larger front end, tires, and slight lift, really does make an impact over the standard Silverado. Highway, I get about 26mpg at 60mph, 24mpg at 70mph, and 21-22mpg at 75-80+mph. I don't go over 75mph, however, as that would be illegal. ;) I'm in Denver, so I'm at altitude, which is somewhat irrelevant (though slightly an impact on power, the wind resistance is slightly lesser as well).
Thanks for doing this test! Both the trailboss and AT4 are rated at 23mpg highway with the diesel and I thought that might be a bit conservative, but it looks to be very accurate. If I remember correctly, your Denali got over 30 on that same trip? Surprising how much of a penalty in MPG you pay with a small lift and more aggressive tires.
The Duramax is a great option. Off road tires definitely trim the fuel mileage on any truck. Had a 2018 6.2L LTZ and when I replaced the street oriented tires for an off road tire mileage did suffer some. I need the off road tires in my situation. I've had my 22' Refreshed 6.2l Trail Boss for a year (12k) and I really love it. I screwed up and didn't order the adaptive cruise control 🙄. I have the TB Premium package and that should have been included in my opinion.
I just bought a 2021 GMC Sierra and sold a 2015 Ram 1500 Hemi (AKA rust bucket). The RAM only got 14 MPG highway empty, what a joke for modern day vehicle MPG. Cant wait to get the GMC
2020 5.7 hemi ram 4x4 big cab. 285 tires 2.5 inch lift front 1 inch rear and im at 21 mpg on my weekly trip to my place upnorth. Not impressive honestly.
The F150 5.0 I sold my son-in-law got 24-26mpg on highway not towing. As far as lights go. I mirrored the back window in my 4-runner. Got tired of being blinded by the blue LED's from tailgaters. Funny how they back off after staring at their own lights. Huh.
