2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Review / Get This Over the German Rivals

There are many luxury SUVs on the market but none stand out quite like the 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. However, Italian cars have a stereotype of being unreliable lemons. While that may be true for cars made in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, does that stereotype still hold true today? Or is this Alfa Romeo just as reliable, and as good, as its German rivals?
Like almost all other luxury SUVs, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. There is an option twin-turbocharged V6 with over 500 hp which is derived from a Ferrari V8 but most trim levels of the Stelvio have the 2.0L engine. It produces a healthy 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque (209 kW & 415 Nm). Alfa Romeo claims a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 5.5 seconds. This engine has a hint of turbo lag but it has a broad power band and it pulls without any fuss.
For an SUV that weighs 1,817 kg (4,007 lbs) with an engine that is more powerful than the base engine in the German rivals, the fuel economy of this 2023 Stelvio is not too bad. It is officially rated at 10.8 L/100km (21.8 MPG) in a city and 8.3 L/100km (28.3 MPG) on a highway. With mostly city driving, I averaged 10.3 L/100km (22.8 MPG) during my time with the SUV.
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is quite a bit more expensive than its German or Japanese, or even American luxury crossover rivals. The 2023 Stelvio Sprint starts at $60,190 CAD / $48,170 USD, RWD (including destination) while this new Estrema trim starts at $71,490 CAD / $60,920 USD (including destination).

My 2019 Stelvio just clocked 30k miles and I have never had a problem with it. I appreciate how it is driver focused, comfortable on road trips and quiet on the highway. The back window is small, but I became accustomed to it very quickly.

I absolutely love my 2020 Stelvio. It has 50-50 front and rear weight distribution, Rear wheel biased AWD, immaculate steering with loads of power and it looks stunning from every angle. its a driver's dream.

We have 2021 Stelvio and I LOVE it! I traded a Mercedes C450 in for it and have not regretted it at all. It is fun to drive and very comfortable . It does have a few quirks sometimes but it adds to the personality of the car. I have not had a lick of trouble with it......well, except for the battery. The Alfa battery is horrid and dies quickly, I recommend that after you drive it off the car lot take it to buy a better battery and it will be a very happy car. Took it on a roundtrip to Florida from Ohio, not one issue and could still walk when you got out of the car. Didn't feel like we had been beat up. Every time I open the car it makes me smile at how nice the interior is. I love the looks that I get from other luxury car drivers, either trying to figure out what it is, or knowing and being impressed. I am very lucky with my dealership experience as well. The people there are super nice, helpful, and give a VIP feel with every regular scheduled service.

Have had my Stelvio for 2years and had no issues, it's fabulous to drive, looks fabulous and I recommend anyone looking for a mid- size SUV to consider an Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

I have a four month old Stelvio Veloce and it has exceeded my every expectation. Already knowing that it was the class leader in handling/fun to drive characteristics, I was surprised at how well built it is. It has the inherent solidity I've only experienced in my German cars. The quality of materials, as well as fit and finish, is top notch. But it's how it drives that makes the difference...

It's expected the 'Estrema' to be more expensive. Try to configure a German car with real full leather all around, including over the front and rear doors, try fit it with the adaptive suspension, slip differential, 14 speaker sound system, level 2 autonomous driving, adaptive/directional headlights and all the carbon fiber finishes... ...then compare the price. 😁

Very nice and detailed review! Thank you! :) My Stelvio is approaching 2 years old with no issues, and I still feel like a kid with a new toy everyday I drive it. It's the most pleasurable driving car I ever had. It never fails to bring a smile to my face, either because it offers a very premium and quiet ride ...or a very feisty and nimble one. The Suspension, chassis and steering coupled with the very fine and fast ZF8HP gearbox (in Dynamic mode) makes it very special and fun car to drive - we complete forget it's a SUV! 😎

I own Stelvio 2021, unfortunately there's war in Ukraine so I can't use it as it supposed to. So I could only drive 9000 kilometers in 2 years. I had no electrical or mechanical issues with it. Yet the AC gasket got leaky, so I had to replace it and refill the coolant. And gasket failures are not covered by the guarantee, so I've paid the full price of repairs myself. It's amazing when driving at high speeds on high way. It's brilliant when driving the corners. It really feels that you want to go to drive it.

I'm on my second Giulia and zero issues. I drove the first one 30,000 miles with no issues. I'll likely go to a Stelvio after the refresh for 2024!

I have had my Stelvio for almost three years. Only issue was the outside temp gauge that was covered under warranty! Looks sharp, drives great, and I love having something different.

Alfa Romeos are drivers machines. Nothing overwhelmingly tech heavy at all. This auto is not an iPad on wheels. I know. I own a '21 Stelvio Q4 Sport Ti. Best looking, best performing machine on Earth.

I use to say the high tech is there, just on different places. For instance, you might want to read about the valve system on this 2.0, called (MultiAir2). We’ve an Ackerman geometry very high ratio steering, carbon fiber drive shaft for weight saving, a chassis designed for 50/50 weight balance with rear traction/bias in mind, a very competent, Alfa patented suspension, brake-by-wire, adaptive directional headlights, slip diferencial, etc. …and of course we also have all the 3 letters electronic safeties that can also include adaptive cruise or level 2 autonomia driving.

If you want to get some more piece of mind from this GME 2.0 Turbo engine, the Jeep Wrangler 2.0T is essentially the same. If Stellantis thought enough about putting the same basic engine in the Wrangler, and some have reported 100k miles with no issues, keep watching those threads. The turbo might be a Garrett, which, if you know their history, they made turbos for the old Buick Grand National and SFI Regal from the early 1980's. That should tell you something about Turbo-building and reliability experience. Treat the turbo as it should be treated and do the maintenance as expected, and it should be a great quality engine. Transmission might be the same 8-speed tranny as well. If so, expect it to last!

Thanks for this; nice SUV and one that might rival the Porsche Macan in terms of handling, and probably is more practical than the Macan.

The new generation of Alfa Romeo vehicles is as reliable as their German rivals. There's always an example of stellar reliability just as there are lemons from time to time. The rear visibility is better than you make it sound as well as rear headroom, perhaps you are just a very tall person, I'm 5'10" (1.8 m) and have no issues being back there. Of course, take my comments with a grain of salt because, being the owner of one, I might be slightly bias 😉

beautiful car, if you buy it then you must stick to it, since you would loose $20K as soon as you drive out from the dealership - if they have the electric version, that would be a different story - Quadrofoglio - "g" is silent just like in "pagliacci"

The trunk is not on the small side compared to the German rivals. The trunk has 525lts which is just 4% less than the boxy versions of the GLC, X3 and Q5 with 550lts. ...but exactly the same as the GLC Coupe, X4, the new X3i ...and even more than a Q5 Sportback, a Macan or a Volvo XC60 to name a few. EDIT: Stelvio size is the same as its main competitors, for example: 2cm shorter than a X3 or GLC, but also 1cm wider than those.

I believe my Veloce has the same adaptive suspension as the 'extrema' and I find it as comfortable if not more than the one on the GLC. EDIT: I have 20" wheels on mine. It might make a difference

Chassis and Suspensions were engineered by Ferrari engineers, to be more specific the same engineer who made the Ferrari Enzo suspensions made also the Stelvio’s.

The only issue I have is. There is a clinging noise on front tires when I take off or turn on take off. It’s very common. I told the dealership and they kinda brushed me off and told me it’s normal. Is it though. Forums say there many owners out there experiencing the same thing. What is it ?

Something to do with the tyre geometry, especially when turning slowly. It causes a skipping effect. They fixed it on the MY20 onwards model... like mine... which doesn't do that.

If you are nouveau-semi-riche and lack both imagination and style go for one of the Germans ... PS: It seems that the issues people have with their Alfas pertain to the expensive QV versions of the Giulia and Stelvio.
